Chipola Offers State Approved Educator Preparation Institute
Chipola College is designated by The Florida Department of Education as an Educator Preparation Institute. Dr. Kitty Myers, Vice President of Instruction and Baccalaureate Programs, says, “This is great news for anyone with a bachelor’s degree who is interested in entering the teaching field.” The Educator Preparation Institute is a program for college graduates with a bachelor’s degree—in a subject other than education— who want to earn the credentials to become a Florida certified teacher.
Myers says the course of study, which can be completed in as little as a year, offers programs leading to certification in all certification areas.
Students must complete 15 semester hours of coursework as well as some field experience. Enrollees must pass all three portions of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination during the program. Those who successfully complete the program will receive certification from the Department of Education. Perhaps the best news for aspiring teachers is the fact that Chipola pays the tuition through a Succeed Florida grant.
In addition to the Educator Preparation Institute for students already holding a bachelor’s degree, Chipola also awards bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics Education (6–12), Biology Education (6–12), Middle Grades Mathematics Education (5–9), Middle Grades Science Education (5–9), Secondary Education (K-5) and Exceptional Student Education (K-12). Tuition is free for these programs as well, with support from the Florida 2007-2008 Succeed Grant. For information about the program, contact Amanda Mullins at 850-718-2467 or Dr. Cleveland at 850-718-2416.
