Indians' Balance Helps
Garner Win
#3 Chipola College used a balanced attack on
Saturday evening in an 84-72 win over Pensacola. The Indians, now 25-1
on the season, had six players that scored at least eight points.
Sophomore Victor Dubovitsky led the charge with 15
points, going 5 of 9 from the field. Sophomore’s Jamarcus Ellis and Ed
Berrios chipped in with 11 and 10 points.
“I thought Vic was ready to go,” said Chipola head
coach Greg Heiar. “He came off the bench and got himself going early.
Really, I was pleased with the entire bench tonight.”
The Indians trailed 11-14 with 11:08 to play in the
1st half. However, seventeen points on their next eleven
possessions would push the lead to 28-19 with 6:30 to play. The lead
would then grow to 13 points by the half, with Chipola taking a 46-33
advantage in the locker room.
“We were able to get out and run with some forced
turnovers before the break,” said Heiar. “It was one of those games
were we did enough to win.”
The win gave Chipola a season sweep in the series,
moving them to 3-0 against the Pirates on the season. It also moved
Heiar to 12-0 against Pensacola in his Chipola career, 9-0 as the Head
Coach.
“It’s always difficult to beat a team three times
in one season,” said Heiar. “Both teams competed hard for forty minutes
tonight.”
The Indians, who are now 8-1 in the Panhandle
Conference, keep their one game advantage over Tallahassee (7-2) in the
race for what would be Chipola’s 4th straight league
championship.
Both teams
meet in Marianna two weeks from now for a season finale tilt. The
February 24 match-up will likely have both state tournament and league
championship implications.
Chipola resumes play on Wednesday evening in Panama City where they will
face Gulf Coast. The game can be heard at www.chipola.edu
