For the second time in as many seasons, the Chipola Indians will enter Panhandle Conference play with an unblemished record. After finishing last year with 17 wins and no losses in the non-conference, this year’s version cruised to an 18-0 record after a 93-34 win over the Vikings of St. Lawrence.
“Yes, we were the more talented team today,” said Chipola coach Greg Heiar, “but I thought our guys played pretty good while trying to do the little things. We wanted to make sure that we finished up this portion of our season on the right note.”
Chipola never trailed in the contest, keyed in large part to their pressure on the defensive end.
“We challenged our guys to play 40 minutes of defense,” said Heiar. “We had a few lapses, but I was pleased with the overall effort.”
The Indians, who took a 48-20 lead into the locker room, surged to begin the second half. Chipola would score the first 18 points of the period, extending the lead to 46 points just six minutes into the half.
“This was a great opportunity for some of the guys that don’t always get to play as much,” added Heiar. “All of our guys work extremely hard, and I’m glad that they had an opportunity to help us get to eighteen wins.”
Chipola opens up Panhandle Conference play on Saturday, January 5th, traveling to play at Tallahassee. Chipola won last years’ series 2-1, helping the Indians claim their fourth straight league championship trophy.
