The
Chipola
Indians
opened the
season on
Thursday
evening with
a 103-73 win
over the
Truett-McConnell
Bears.
Freshman
newcomers
Casey
Mitchell and
Gary Flowers
led the way,
each scoring
19 points
for the 1-0
Indians.
“I just
tried to
take good
shots and
let the game
come to me,”
said
Mitchell. “I
was really
trying to
just play
hard on the
defensive
end. That’s
what Chipola
has been
built on.”
Flowers
echoed those
sentiments.
“Tonight was
mine and
Casey’s
night. But
we have so
much talent
on this
team,
tomorrow it
will
probably be
two other
guys. That’s
what’s great
about
playing here
at Chipola.”
The Indians
utilized
their
transition
offense and
unselfish
passing to
jump out to
56-37
halftime
advantage.
“I thought
we really
shared the
basketball,”
said Chipola
coach Greg
Heiar. “We
made the
extra pass
all night,
which helped
us get so
many open
looks.”
Chipola
scored 30
points from
beyond the
arc,
connecting
on 10-23
from the 3pt
line.
Sophomore
Mario
Little, who
is committed
to Kansas,
added 16
points.
The future
Wichita
State
Shocker,
sophomore
Clevin
Hannah,
chipped in
14. Hannah
went 4-5
from the 3pt
line.
“I thought
after the
first 10
minutes we
really
cranked it
up,” said
Heiar. “We
played with
a lot of
energy and
built on
some
momentum.”
Freshman
Vernon Teel
rounded out
the double
digit
scoring for
the Indians,
adding 12
points off
of the
bench.
The Indians
continue
action this
weekend,
hosting IMG
Academy and
Motlow State
in the
Milton H.
Johnson
Classic on
Friday and
Saturday.
