Mitchell Earns National Award
Second Indian in Three Years to Receive Award
Although the season has ended, the awards have not. Last week, the NJCAA release the 2009 All-American honorees. Not surprising, Chipola's own Casey Mitchell was selected to the first team. Normally that would be the best news for a typical program. However, the biggest news came only a few days later when the NJCAA named Mitchell as the 2009 National Player of the Year.
Casey Mitchell had an outstanding season, averaging 20.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in leading the Indians to a 34-2 overall record and third-place finish at the 2009 NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. Mitchell, a First-Team NJCAA All-American selection, helped lead Chipola to a Region VIII, title and the program's third straight berth in the national tournament.
At this year's national tournament in Hutchinson, KS, Mitchell earned All-Tournament honors by averaging 21.5 points over four games played. His best performance in Hutch came in the semi-finals against eventual national champion Salt Lake Community College. He scored a game-high 38 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field, including 5-for-11 from three-point range in one of the most exciting games in tournament history.Mitchell, who earned both All-Florida and Panhandle Conference Player of the Year honors, is the second player from Chipola in three seasons to earn the Player of the Year away from the NJCAA Men's Basketball Coaches Association (JaMarcus Ellis, 2007).
