Chipola Men’s Basketball Team Release Schedule
Chipola College Men’s Basketball team held their first official practice of the 2008-09 season Wednesday afternoon and afterwards, Head Coach Greg Heiar released the Indians basketball schedule to the area media.
For the first time in several years, the Chipola Indians will open the season on the road. The men’s team will travel to Poplar Bluff, Missouri on October 31 to open the ’08 campaign against Mineral Area and nationally ranked Three Rivers. From there, the preseason #2 ranked Indians will travel to Ottumwa, Iowa to face preseason #1 Indian Hills on November 3rd.
“We will start the season on the road playing three traditional powerhouses in JUCO basketball,” said coach Heiar. “After the first weekend, playing against Mineral Area, Three Rivers, and Indian Hills, we will definitely know where our team stands against others in the country.”
The men’s first home game will come on Nov 20 with a 7:00 pm tip scheduled against Cape Fear College from North Carolina. The Indians will return to action at home on December 4 as they open the Milton H. Johnson Panhandle Classic. The Classic will consist of a total of 12 games over the course of December 4 – 6.
Coach Heiar said, “The Milton H. Johnson Panhandle Classic will be a great opportunity for the community and fans to come see our team play, as well as, the other Panhandle Conference teams. At that point in the season, there is a possibility that 8 to 10 of the teams at the classic will be ranked in the national NJCAA poll.”
With only 5 non-conference games scheduled to be played in the friendly confines of the Milton H. Johnson Health Center, Chipola will look to build experience as they accumulate road miles with trips to Atlanta, GA (Nov 14-15), St. Petersburg, FL (Nov 22), Winter Haven, FL (Dec 15-16) and Pensacola’s New Year’s Eve Tournament (Dec 30-31).
Chipola will seek their sixth consecutive conference title as they open Panhandle Conference action at home against Tallahassee Community College on January 3, 2009.
