Spel and Tuk Lead Dutch to European Championship
August 1, 2009
After a slow start to the 16th European Championship game in Valencia, Spain, the Dutch National Softball Team broke the game open by plating 3 runs in the 4th to take a 3-0 lead. From there, the Dutch team never looked back and captured the European Championship by a final score of 4-0 over Great Britain.
"I am extremely excited and proud for both Karin and Areke. This is a great achievement for them and their team," commented Chipola coach Belinda Hendrix.
Both Spel and Tuk were student-athletes at Chipola College during the 2007 season in which the Lady Indians captured the Panhandle Conference title, the Florida State title, and eventually, the National Championship.
Today's game against Great Britain was a rematch of the Friday's semi-final game and was the fourth time in which the Dutch National Team faced Great Britain during the tournament. Although the Dutch won the first three meetings, but all bets were off as the first pitch was delivered today. Nevertheless, the outcome was never in doubt late in the game.Follow continuing coverage of Dutch National Softball at www.dutchsoftballteam.com/
