FIREFIGHTING I (225 hours)

The Firefighting I  program consists of 225 hours and is for students who are interested in becoming a certified Volunteer Fire Fighter or someone who wants to take this class now and then take the Firefighting II class at a later date. The requirements for this class are that the student must be 18 years of age or older and have a high school diploma or equivalent. An academic average of "C" or higher must be earned in each Firefighting course in the program to receive a certificate. To be eligibel for the state exam, a student must complete all requirements set forth by the college and the Bureau of Fire Standards and Training.  

We will be offering a Firefighter I NIGHT class beginning in November 26, 2007. This class will meet from 5:30 - 10:00 pm CST. The nights will be determined by students at Orientation. These classes will be held at the Chipola College Public Service Building in Marianna. This course complies with all State regulations for volunteer firefighters. The cost of the class will be $280. The Firefighting I & II program prepares students for certification and employment as Fire Fighters in accordance with Florida Statutes. This Statute requires that a student must be 18 years of age or older; have a high school diploma or equivalent; no criminal record; pass a physical examination; complete the fire academy; and pass the State certification test. An academic average of "C" or higher must be earned in each Firefighting course in the program to to receive a certificate. To be eligible for the state exam, a student must complete all requirements set forth by the college and the Bureau of Fire Standards and Training.

We will be offering two Firefighting I & II programs starting in January. We will offer a Day class that will start on January 28, 2008 and end in the middle of May, 2008. This class will meet Monday through Thursday from 8 am to 4:30 pm. We will also offer a Night class that will begin January 22, 2008 and end in the middle of July, 2008. This program requires that students follow the Bureau of Fire Standards and Training attendance policy, which basically states that no student may miss more than ten percent of any course. Some class experiences however, have a mandatory attendance requirement. The Firefighting program termination policy will be strictly enforced. Roll call will be held at each class meeting and attendance is considered an essential requirement of Firefighting students.

A minimum grade of seventy percent must be maintained on each evaluation. One retake is permitted on each evaluation; failure to reach a seventy percent grade on a retake would result in dismissal. A student is allowed to take only two retake examinations.

A processing fee of $10 for 225 or less clock hours and $20 for more than 225 clock hours will be assessed to each student per semester. There is also a State Fire College Application Fee of $94.
