Former Chipola Player is Winning Pitcher In world Series
The Washington Nationals won the World Series title Wednesday, (Oct. 30) and former Chipola player Patrick Corbin was the winning pitcher.
Corbin threw three scoreless innings of relief to help the Nationals win their first championship since the Washington Senators won it in 1924.
When Corbin entered the game in the bottom of the sixth, Houston held a 2-0 lead. He held the Astros scoreless while his offense scored three runs in the seventh to take the lead.
Corbin is the first former Chipola baseball player to win a World Series ring. He was drafted out of Chipola in 2009. The left-handed pitcher, signed a six-year, $140 million deal with the Nationals in the off-season.
Chipola head coach Jeff Johnson is happy to see one of his former players competing on the biggest stage in the game. "I'm proud of what so many of our former players have accomplished both on and off
the field since leaving Chipola. Getting to the playoffs and having a chance to win the World Series is the ultimate prize for every player. We’re very proud to have a former Chipola Indian wearing a nice, big World Series ring.”

Graceville Pen Pal Project
GRACEVILLE—Chipola College elementary education students have been communicating with students at Graceville Elementary school as “pen pals” as part of the “Methods in Teaching Language Arts in the Elementary School” course.
Dr. Gina McAllister, Dean of the Chipola School of Education, says, “This opportunity has provided our students with valuable samples of elementary students’ writing for analysis and has given the elementary students a chance to practice composing letters to strengthen their writing skills.”
The Chipola students recently visited Graceville Elementary to meet their pen pal and to enjoy a pizza party.

Brain Bowl Student of the Month: October
Congratulations to Carlos Staley, Chipola College, for being awarded as the FCSAA Brain Bowl Division Student of the Month for October! He was nominated by his advisor, Stan Young.

Here is what Stan told us about Carlos: "Carlos Staley is a returning player on the Chipola Brain Bowl Team. He will be our captain this year after being a member of the team that finished 3rd at nationals last year. He has consistently been one of our top scorers. He is a specialist in Mythology, Science, and Music.

Carlos is a well-known leader on the Chipola campus. He is one of the main tutors in our ACE Lab. Not only is he is a leader on campus, but he also works two jobs (at an ice cream store and cooks at a local restaurant on the weekends). He still manages to attend all of our practices, often bringing our team snacks. It is amazing to watch him manage his time so well while maintaining high grades."
