CHIPOLA
STUDENTS RECOGNIZED BY USA TODAY ACADEMIC PROGRAM
MARIANNA—Chipola College students Russell Register and Cassie Mitchell
have earned high honors from USA Today Academic Team program. The program is
associated with Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year
colleges.
Register was named a member of the All-USA Today Coca-Cola Bronze Team.
He will receive a medallion and $1,000, and was highlighted in the April 6
edition of USA Today.
Mitchell was named a Coca-Cola Finalist in the All-USA Academic Team competition
and also will receive $1,000. Both students were named to the All-Florida First
Team. Mitchell also has earned a $3,000 award from FSU.
Russell Register is an active
member of Chipola’s Phi Theta Kappa honor society. PTK adviser Pam Rentz, says,
“His compassion for others, his undeniable leadership, and his academic
achievement distinguish him from other students.”
Russell became active in PTK as a Marianna High School senior while dually
enrolled at Chipola. He quickly shared his passion for working with
medical organizations to provide support in finding cures for serious illnesses
that affected members of his family, as well as members of our community.
He implemented “Project Patients,” an avenue to work with various charitable
organizations.
Having a maternal aunt who died of brain cancer, Russell has been passionate
about the American Cancer Society. He served as captain of a Relay for
Life team which raised $900 in the Relay Walk and he helped to sponsor a Breast
Cancer Awareness Seminar on campus. As a result of this event, students
began to share their experiences with the disease, and a community of support
was born.
Russell led chapter members in a partnership with the Chipola women’s basketball
team for “Think Pink Night” to raise awareness of breast cancer. Rentz says,
“Russell has taken a prominent leadership role with the American Cancer Society
on our campus.”
Russell also helped with the March of Dimes, heading a fundraising drive and
coordinating a team to participate in the March of Dimes Walk. He helped
to raise $200 with a cake auction with a local elementary school. He also
organized a team for the first Jackson County Multiple Sclerosis Society Walk.
Russell also conducted a toy drive and organized a trip to the Shriners’
Hospital in Tampa, delivering toys and books to be used for birthday and
Christmas gifts for pediatric patients. He created craft projects for
members to use during one-on-one time with the patients. Under Russell’s
leadership, many Chipola students and local citizens donated their time and
money to these worthwhile organizations.
Russell helped to lead all these projects while maintaining a 4.0 grade point
average to become valedictorian of his Marianna High School class. Rentz, says,
“Even as a dual enrollment student, Russell led with humor, dedication, and
generosity, making him so important to our chapter, campus and community, and
truly, he is worthy of this award.”
Register said, “I have great pride in my community and pride for Chipola
College. Both of my parents are Chipola alumni, as are many family members
and friends. The Chipola legacy is one I value because of the advantages
that I have received by attending this outstanding institution.”
Register is the son of Russell and Jill Register of Marianna. He plans to
transfer to the University of West Florida to major in history.
Chipola sophomore Cassie Mitchell of Sneads
was named a finalist in the in the
USA Today All-American competition. She also was awarded a
scholarship from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation in 2008.
In addition to many service activities, Mitchell is a member of the Honors
Program, Show Choir and the New Friends Program. She was involved in numerous
Phi Theta Kappa projects. She also is a Chipola Student Ambassador and a member
of the Student Government Association.
According to Chipola English professor Pam Rentz, “Cassie is big energy
disguised in a tiny package. She brings enthusiasm to every project. Her
compassion for others, along with her deep desire to serve, makes her an asset
to both our campus and community.”
Cassie’s goal of promoting reading and learning at every grade level from
preschool to college through the “Leaps for Literacy” program featured many
projects, including “Pajama Night” at the Jackson County Public Library.
Cassie recruited Phi Theta Kappa chapter members to read to children of all ages
who showed up at the library in pajamas and carrying pillows and blankets.
Cassie also provided leadership for the “Characters with Class,” project in
which she accompanied children’s author Paula Stark to 20 area elementary
schools. While Stark read her book Abraham the Alligator to over 5,000
students, Cassie and other chapter members dressed as characters and interacted
with the children.
For middle school students, Cassie organized the “Behind the Scenes” a
competition in which student teams read a novel and created a life-size scene
for the competition on the Chipola campus. The middle school teachers
praised the project for helping to get their students excited about reading.
For high school and college students, Cassie organized a free ACT Prep course.
Cassie recruited college faculty to teach the Saturday sessions. Some 150
students participants reported score increases with 70 percent improving in at
least one subtest and some by as many as 10 points.
Cassie also volunteers in the Chipola Academic Center for Excellence, a free
tutorial service on campus, where she works individually with students.
“Throughout my community college career I have been exposed to many wonderful
English professors who have stressed the importance of literacy, as well as the
enjoyment one can derive from reading. The academic program and the leadership
opportunities provided to me at Chipola have given me a passion for literacy in
Chipola’s five-county district and beyond.”
Mitchell is the daughter of Lonnie and Joyce Mitchell of Sneads. She plans to
transfer to Florida State University to major in Public Relations.

MARIANNA—The Chipola College District Board of Trustees hosted a Ribbon-Cutting
and Open House for the college’s newly renovated Building ‘L’ on April 21.
The renovation project provides additional classroom space and a new home for
the college’s ACE (Academic Center for Excellence).
Chipola president Dr. Gene Prough
thanked the college’s Board of Trustees for their leadership on the project
which includes the Dean Allen Atrium, named for the late Webb Allen, the first
dean of the college and one of the most influential leaders in the school’s
history. In addition to teaching, Dean Allen was practically the president
of Chipola handling many of the day-to-day operations of the college from 1948
to 1978. Prough, who was a Chipola student during Allen’s tenure, said, “Dean
Allen loved students and a genuine concern for them to succeed. We are proud to
name the Dean Allen Atrium in his honor.”
The renovation project also provides space for the college ACE (Academic Center
for Excellence). Bonnie Smith, ACE Coordinator, said, “We appreciate the board
and administration for providing this new space. We especially appreciate the
faculty for supporting the ACE and our students.” ACE offers free peer tutoring
for Chipola students.
Dr. Prough said, “To borrow a popular slogan, ACE is the place. This is the
place where students can find help, find a friend, and find success in their
college classes.”
Whiterock & Associates, Inc., completed the renovation project at a cost of $1.7

community
college chancellor to address CHIPOLA grads
MARIANNA— Dr. Will Holcombe, Chancellor for Florida’s Community College System, will deliver the address to the Class of 2009 at Chipola College’s Commencement on Thursday, May 7.
Dr. Holcombe has more than 30 years of
experience in educational leadership and collegiate administration. Holcombe,
who completed his undergraduate studies at Baldwin-Wallace College, earned both
his Master’s in Education and Ph.D. in College Administration from the
University of Florida. A former U.S. Marine Corps Captain, Dr. Holcombe began
his teaching career at Ford Junior High School in Brook Park, Ohio. He later
joined Florida's Community College System, serving as an English professor at
Santa Fe and Broward Community College, where he eventually became president in
1987. Holcombe has also served as Vice President of Brevard CC, provost and
academic dean for Broward's Central Campus and assistant to the President for
Broward CC.
Since Florida’s Community Colleges are the primary access point to higher
education in the state for more than 800,000 students, one of Chancellor
Holcombe’s highest priorities is facilitating and maintaining postsecondary
opportunities for students. He says, “Community colleges provide the state’s
broadest range of educational options, including adult continuing education,
recreation and leisure programs, certificate training, Associate’s degrees which
provide university parallel and/or career technical preparation, and
Baccalaureate degrees in areas of critical workforce need.”
Dr. Holcombe continues to be a strong advocate for student success, seamless
articulation and economic development. As Chancellor, Holcombe works to build
consensus with other stakeholders in higher education including K-12, workforce
development entities, and public and private four-year institutions.
A highly sought after speaker and presenter, Dr. Holcombe has represented
Florida's Community Colleges at various state and national conventions. He has
also provided consulting services to colleges throughout the country.
Some 371 Chipola graduates make up the class of 2009. They will join the ranks
of more than 10,000 Chipola alumni. Counted as members of the class are all who
completed their degrees or certificates from December of 2008 to May of 2009 or
who will complete work during the summer of 2009. Chipola’s fifth class of
bachelor’s degree graduates in Secondary Education also will receive degrees
during the ceremony.

Chipola prof and sister Visit
Oxford U.
OXFORD, ENGLAND—Chipola College alumni and sisters, Geraldine Paulk
DeFelix and Marilyn Paulk Davis, recently spent a week living the Oxford
University experience in England.
As an English/reading professor at Chipola, DeFelix was invited to join 34
worldwide participants for the Oxford Round Table Symposium on Early Childhood
Literacy and was encouraged to take a guest. Her sister Marilyn Davis
accompanied her thus beginning the fulfillment of a lifelong dream as a result
of their initial association with Chipola in the late sixties.
During the symposium DeFelix was asked to lead a discussion addressing issues
related to preparing and certifying effective reading teachers. She
emphasized the fact that community colleges that have an open door admission
policy face challenges similar to those of early childhood teachers when
struggling readers are trying to read and write at the college level. All
agreed that effective early intervention training for those who teach the
at-risk students must be a top priority at all levels of teacher preparation.
The papers presented at the conference offered many ideas that can enhance the
reading and English programs at Chipola and at the Baptist College of Florida,
where DeFelix also serves as the Writing Center Director. She is also
anxious to share what she learned at the symposium with area public school
teachers.
The sisters spent a week
living in actual dorm rooms of Lincoln College, one of the 38 colleges that make
up the Oxford University system. Their week of stimulating presentations
and discussions was highlighted with a tour of Blenheim Palace, the ancestral
home of the families of Winston Churchill and Princess Diana.
Both DeFelix and Davis graduated from Chipola and earned their bachelor’s
degrees from the University of West Florida and master’s degrees from Troy State
University. As a Chipola student, DeFelix worked in the library under the
direction of Mrs. Merle Houston, who proved to be an exemplary mentor and role
model. DeFelix also worked on the Chipola yearbook staff with Professor
Donnie Adams, who would later be one of her mentors when she became a new
faculty member in the English Department. Davis enjoyed acting in the Chipola
Theater Department, playing a supporting role in The Dark of the Moon,
directed by Larry Alford. She also participated in other productions and
was a member of SGA.
The sisters have always been grateful for the positive influence their Chipola
experience had on them. Their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Paulk,
sacrificed much financially to ensure that their daughters received the
education they needed to become successful in their chosen fields. DeFelix
said, “Without the opportunities Chipola afforded our farm family, earning a
college degree would have been virtually impossible for both of us.”
Having traveled to Europe several times since their Chipola days, both DeFelix
and Davis credit their humanities professors with instilling in them an
appreciation for and the desire to experience first-hand the best of what the
world’s greatest artists have left for others to enjoy. They never dreamed
that they would travel from their family farm near Campbellton to such places as
England, Ireland, France, Italy and Germany. Some of their travel
experiences were provided by fellow alum and
Chipola history professor, Robert Ivey, who organizes summer tours abroad.
While Professor DeFelix is a 34 year veteran in the field of education, Mrs.
Davis also has experience in educating others in the business world.
Through the Private Industry Council, Pensacola Junior College, and the Florida
Unemployment Agency, she used her communication background to conduct workshops
to improve job search skills of the participants. Later she worked with
Resource Consultants, Inc., a contractor for the U.S. Army, at Vilseck, Germany.
She managed the facility that provided computer-based networking to companies
stateside in addition to coordinating interviews with U.S. companies for
soldiers returning to civilian life. Currently, Mrs. Davis is employed by
Money Management, LLC, a CPA firm in Dothan, where she and her husband Glen
reside.
Chipola has become a family tradition now that both of DeFelix’s sons, Dave and
Matt, are alumni, and her husband David is currently enrolled in computer
courses. She and her husband are dedicated fans of the athletic teams,
including the cheerleaders that they have coached and driven countless miles for
the past 12 years. David also enjoys driving for other college groups,
such as the Show Choir, Phi Theta Kappa, and the Spanish Club. Through the
years Professor DeFelix and Mrs. Davis have also supported the Fine Arts
Department.
The sisters are passionate
about the mission of Chipola because they know the value of having an
institution of higher learning available to those who might not otherwise have
the opportunity to attend college. DeFelix said, “The doors that Chipola opened
for us are still making dreams come true, and we wish the same for each student,
regardless of whether their dreams involve great performances in athletics, fine
arts, or the halls of justice or medicine. Wherever a student wants to go,
he or she can get there from Chipola thanks to the wise decisions of the Chipola
Board of Trustees, the diligent vision of all of the administrators, the
dedication of the faculty and support staff, and the continued support of the
Chipola District,” said DeFelix.

community college chancellor to address CHIPOLA grads
MARIANNA— Dr. Will Holcombe, Chancellor for Florida’s Community College System,
will
deliver the address to the Class of 2009 at Chipola College’s Commencement on
Thursday, May 7.
Holcombe’s highest priorities is facilitating and maintaining postsecondary
opportunities for our students. Community colleges provide the state’s broadest
range of educational options, including adult continuing education, recreation
and leisure programs, certificate training, Associate’s degrees which provide
university parallel and/or career technical preparation, and Baccalaureate
degrees in areas of critical workforce need.
Chipola’s fifth class of
bachelor’s degree graduates in Secondary Education will receive degrees during
the ceremony.
