CHIPOLA WINS AT STATE PHI BETA LAMBDA COMPETITION
MARIANNA—The Chipola College chapter of Phi Beta Lambda captured a dozen awards at the recent State Leadership Competition in Orlando.
Chipola students competed with PBL members from numerous community colleges and universities across the state of Florida in various business-related competitions.

Chipola computer instructor Vikki Milton traveled with the Chipola group as regular PBL adviser Kathryn Roberts was on leave with a new grandchild.
Milton said, “I was awed by our students’ professionalism and proud to be a part of the Chipola team. It is evident that Kathryn Roberts, along with past and present members of PBL, have built an outstanding reputation for Chipola College at the state level.”
Chipola alumnus Chad Fears who currently serves as Florida PBL President was nominated as a candidate for the office of National PBL President. Chipola sophomore Kaleb Mercer was re-elected Division I Vice-president for the state.

CHIPOLA TO SCREEN SPANISH FILM ‘AMORES PERROS’ ON MONDAY
MARIANNA—Chipola College will host a special showing of the Mexican film “Amores perros,” on Monday, April 11, from 7 to 10 p.m., in Jackson Lecture Hall.
The Spanish language film (subtitled in English) was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Film category in 2001. The film is not rated.
Chipola foreign language professor Dr. Mark Ebel will present a lecture prior to the screening of the film. His lecture, entitled, “What We Would Learn if Dogs Were Our Teachers in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Amores perros,” was also presented at the 38th Annual Conference of the Southwest Council of Latin American Studies, in Veracruz, Mexico, in March.

CHIPOLA ANNOUNCES FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLARSHIP DATES
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer scholarship in music, art, and theatre scholarships during the 2005-2006 school year.
Show Choir Auditions are April 14-15 at 3:30 p.m. each day. Attendance at both auditions is required. All students should come with shoes for the dance audition; a completed Show Choir Application and an accompanied vocal solo with an accompaniment track on cassette or CD, or an accompanist.
Visual Art application and portfolio deadline is April 28. Auditions for Music and Theater scholarships are set for April 28 and again on May 12.

High School graduates with acceptable academic records and music, theatre, and art aptitude who plan to pursue studies as music, theatre or art majors are eligible to apply.

CHIPOLA HOSTS HIGH SCHOOL BRAIN BOWL
MARIANNA—Chipola College recently held its first-ever High School Brain Bowl Competition.
Twelve high schools participated in the one-day event. Marianna High’s team of John Martin, Anthony Bennett, Kelly Blighton, Kelley English and Kristen Cotton captured first place in the event. Bunny Odom is sponsor of the Marianna team. The Blountstown High Team of Adam Harpool, Treyson Sanders, Baleria Jones, Nic Stoltzfus and Trevor O’Banyon won second place. Blountstown’s sponsor is Scott Bontrager.
Individual winners are: first, Colin Forehand of Chipley High; second, Anthony Bennett of Marianna High; third, Mark Hodge of Holmes County High; fourth, Trevor O’Bryan of Blountstown High; and fifth, Ty Daniels of Grand Ridge High.
The following schools also participated: Altha, Bethlehem, Cottondale, Graceville, Jackson Academy, Poplar Springs and Sneads.

FIREARMS COURSE SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College Public Service will hold a 16-hour Firearms Familiarization course April 11-14 at the Reddoch Firing Range on the Blue Springs Highway.
Successful completion of the course may be used in applying for a Concealed Weapons Permit.
The course will meet from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
The fee of $59 is due prior to the first class meeting.

ALL-AMERICAN DAY AT CHIPOLA BASEBALL STADIUM TUESDAY
MARIANNA— The Chipola Indians baseball team hosts North Florida CC, Tuesday, April 12, at 5 p.m., for All-American day. People’s First Community Bank will provide free hot dogs, cokes and chips to all Chipola fans beginning at 4:30 p.m.
The Indians are 7-6 in the Panhandle Conference race and 21-17 overall after splitting a recent series with Pensacola Junior College. The Indians lost 11-3 in 7 at PJC on April 3, after beating Penscola 12-5, on April 2. Pitcher Liam Shanahan came in relief of Steven Brock in the second inning to finish the game. Chipola scored 5 runs in the second and gave up two in the third. Travis Anderson hit a two-run homer in the seventh. The Indians scored five more in the eighth.
Chipola has five home games remaining in the regular season. The Indians host Gulf Coast on Sunday, April 9 at 1 p.m., North Florida on Tuesday, April 12 at 5 p.m., and Tallahassee, Saturday, April 16 at 1 p.m., Pensacola, Tuesday, April 19 at 5 p.m. and Okaloosa-Walton, April 23 at 1 p.m.
The Lady Indians softball team hosts North Florida in a 1 p.m. double-header, Saturday, April 16 for the final home game of the regular season.
Chipola split a double header with Okaloosa-Walton on April 7 to improve to 27-14 overall and 3-5 in conference play. The Lady Indians won the first game, 1-0 behind the pitching of winning pitcher Ashley Mayhue. Chipola lost game two by a score of 8-1. Mayhue was the losing pitcher for Chipola in game two.

MARIANNA—Chipola College will hold graduation ceremonies for the class of 2005 on Thursday, May 5, at 7 p.m. in the Milton Johnson Health Center.
Some 350 students have completed the requirements for degrees or certificates signifying the completion of programs of study at the college. They will join the ranks of approximately 9,600 other graduates of Chipola.
Included among the Class of 2005 are Chipola’s first bachelor’s degree graduates who earned degrees in Secondary Education. A group of several dozen paraprofessionals from local public schools also are graduating.
Parents, relatives and friends are invited to a reception immediately following the ceremony.

CHIPOLA STUDENTS INVITED TO STUDY IN SPAIN THIS SUMMER
MARIANNA—Chipola College foreign language professor Dr. Mark Ebel invites current and future Chipola students to study Spanish this summer in the country of Spain.
Dr. Ebel will lead an Intercultural Connections tour which will include stops in Madrid, Granada and Malaga. The group also will visit the Prado Museum (Madrid), Picasso Museum (Malaga), Alhambra (Granada), Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol de Madrid, Albaicin and Bibrrambla (Granada), and Cathedrals in Granada and Malaga. Students may also choose to attend a Flamenco Show and Bullfight preceded by cultural talks about these two Spanish cultural phenomena.
A group of six Chipola students already have registered the four-hour course, “Spanish Language and Culture Study Abroad” (SPN 2957), which Dr. Ebel will teach during the program. Ebel reported that most of the students have never traveled outside of the U.S. and that they chose Spain for the architecture and the rich culture. The group will stay in Costa Del Sol, which, according to Ebel, “Is one of the most desirable locations in Europe with the best beaches on the Mediterranean.”
The excited students cited varied reasons for making the trip. “I’m a Spanish major, and I just can’t wait to be introduced to a new culture,” said Jenny Barfield of Chipley. Marianna’s Cody Long said, “I look forward to seeing the architecture, history and beautiful sites.” Julie Chance of Bonifay, the mother of three small children, admitted, “I’ve never had the opportunity to travel. This is the chance of a lifetime to immerse myself in another culture. I hope my kids will one day have the same opportunity.” Spanish major Rona Van Lierop of Blountstown, said, “This will be a great learning opportunity for me to speak the native language with the people of Spain.” Amanda Neal of Blountstown said, “I decided to make the trip to learn about the different cultures and traditions of the Spanish people.” Tiffany Burdeshaw of Sneads said, “I’ve never been away; I think it will be a great experience. I can’t wait to see the Flamenco dancers.”
The trip runs May 28 through June 25. The cost of $2,820 includes roundtrip airfare from Tallahassee to Madrid. Room in hotels and homestays and two meals per day are also included.

MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course, beginning May 3 at the Chipola Pool.
Participants must be 15 years of age on or before the first day of class. The course requires a minimum of 29 hours of training which will include water rescue, CPR, and First Aid. The course will meet evenings from 4 to 8 p.m., May 3-5 and May 9-13.

CHIPOLA TIED FOR SECOND IN BASEBALL LEAGUE RACE
MARIANNA—The Chipola Indians are tied for second place in the Panhandle Conference baseball race with Tallahassee. Chipola and TCC are knotted at 12-6, both a half-game behind first place Pensacola at 12-5.
The Indians have three home games remaining in the regular baseball season. The Indians host Tallahassee, Saturday, April 16 at 1 p.m.; Pensacola, Tuesday, April 19 at 5 p.m. and Okaloosa-Walton, Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m. Chipola travels to TCC on April 15 and April 17, to Pensacola on April 20 and to OW on April 22.
Chipola beat North Florida 4-3 on April 13. Clay Long relieved David Mixon who pitched the first eight innings.
Chipola whipped North Florida Junior College 13-2 in 5 innings on April 12. Pitcher Daniel Roberts earned the win. He allowed two runs in 5 innings. Matt Gamel hit a game-ending three-run homer in the fifth.
The Indians swept three important conference games from Gulf Coast, April 8-10. The Indians swamped Gulf Coast, 7-1, on April 8. Winning pitcher was Clay Long. On April 9, Chipola beat Gulf Coast, 15-6, behind the pitching of Steven Brock.
Chipola whipped Gulf Coast 10-3 on April 10, with a huge offensive performance from Travis Anderson who went 5 for 5 on the day. Anderson was 9 for10 in Chipola’s last games with Gulf Coast. Darren Ford’s two-run homer sparked the Indians who were down 3-0 in the fifth. Winning pitcher was Liam Shannan. He pitched 6 and 2/3 innings and was relieved by Daniel Roberts who struck out both batters he faced. David Mixon threw one inning and Josh Ward finished in the ninth.
The league standings as of April 14 are: PJC (12-5); Chipola (12-6); TCC (12-6); OW (11-7); NFL (3-14) and GCC (3-15). The top two teams in the Panhandle Conference earn a berth in the state tournament.

Eade and Rentz also were named first-team members of the All-Florida Academic Team. Additionally, Eade was named Florida’s New Century Scholar, a designation awarded to the state’s top student in the Academic All American Competition.
Lauren Eade of Marianna is reportedly the only student ever to win Phi Theta Kappa’s five major awards: Leaders of Promise Scholarship ($1,000), Coca-Cola Scholarship ($1,000), USA Today All Academic First Team ($2,500), New Century Scholar ($2,000) and Guistewhite Scholarship ($5,000). Lauren is a member of the Chipola Honors program, Student Government Association and Student Ambassadors. She was involved with Chipola’s Rock the Vote event held in conjunction with the PTK Regional Honors Institute on the Chipola campus this summer. In the aftermath of last fall’s hurricanes, Lauren organized a group of students to travel to Pensacola to volunteer with the Red Cross relief efforts.
Lauren initiated the First Books program with the goal of providing a new book to every first grade student in Chipola’s five-county district. She raised funds through donations from local businesses to purchase 1,350 books. With a group of volunteers, Lauren distributed a book to every first grader in four of the five local counties.
Paige Rentz of Sneads is the editor of the Chipola student newspaper, The Papoose. She won four of Phi Theta Kappa’s five major awards: Leaders of Promise Scholarship ($1,000), Coca-Cola Scholarship ($1,000), USA Today All Academic First Team ($2,500) and Guistewhite Scholarship ($5,000).
Paige is an Honors program student and a member of the college Brain Bowl team. Paige was the key leader of Chipola’s Rock the Vote Concert on campus last summer. The purpose was to encourage 18 to 25 year olds to register and to exercise their right to vote. Paige was instrumental in bringing politicians and musicians to campus to speak and perform. She also worked with the national Rock the Vote organization and was designated as their north Florida street team leader.
Paige also joined Lauren on the First Books distribution program and the Red Cross effort in Pensacola. Additionally, she organized monthly satellite seminars and a film series to explore the PTK Honors Study Topic, “Popular Culture: Shaping and Reflecting Who We Are.”
Brandon Sasser of Chipley, who works as a student assistant in the office of Chipola President Dr. Gene Prough, was named a Guistwhite Scholar in March 2005. The $5,000 scholarship is open to students from more than 1,700 community colleges around the world. No more than 20 awards are made annually which makes the three Chipola students’ accomplishments even more significant. Applicants must have a 3.5 or better GPA, and are judged on community service, work experience, honors and participation in out-of-class academic enrichment programs.
Sasser is a member of college Honors program, Brain Bowl team, Student Government Association, Student Ambassadors, Mu Alpha Theta and the Science Club. As Service Officer for Phi Theta Kappa, Brandon helped to raise awareness of PTK’s International Service Project: Conquering Cancer. Brandon worked on a number of programs to inform students and community members about the disease. In addition to distributing Sun Safety packets, he also sold ribbons for breast cancer awareness and donated funds raised to the American Cancer Society. Brandon is a regular tutor at Marianna’s McLane Community Center where he also helps sponsor Halloween and Christmas parties. Brandon is active in his local church and volunteers at the congregation’s Food Pantry.
The three Chipola students helped lead the Chipola chapter of Phi Theta Kappa to win Most Distinguished Chapter in the Florida Region at the recent state convention. With their contributions at freshmen, last year’s chapter earned Hallmark Awards for Scholarship and Fellowship, as well as the Beta Alpha Continued Excellence Award, and the Pinnacle Continued Excellence Award.

MARIANNA--Some 200 students representing 14 area high schools participated in the 21st annual Chipola College Math Olympiad on April 15.
Students competed individually on written exams in Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus. Teams competed in three Ciphering competitions and for Team Awards that are earned through highest combined scores on the written exams. For their hard work, the students earned trophies, medals and certificates and were treated to lunch. The event concluded with an awards ceremony in the college Arts Center.

CHIPOLA HOSTS OW SATURDAY IN LAST GAME OF REGULAR SEASON
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Indians baseball team hosts Okaloosa-Walton, Saturday, April 23, at 1 p.m., in the final game of the regular season.
The Indians won 10 of their last 11 games to move into first place in the Panhandle Conference.
Chipola travels to OW Friday, April 22, for a 5 p.m. game with the second- place Raiders who are a half game behind the Indians.
The Panhandle Conference standings as of April 20, are: Chipola (16-7), O-W (15-8), Pensacola (15-8), TCC (13-10), NFL (5-18) and Gulf CC (5-18).
The Indians’ record stands at 16-7 in league play and 30-18 overall following a 13-5 loss at Pensacola on April 20. Chipola whipped Pensacola 12-2 on April 19.
The Indians defeated TCC, 5-4, in 10 innings on April 15. Chipola slipped by TCC, 12-11, on April 16. The Indians trounced TCC, 15-0, in seven innings on April 17. Chipola’s Liam Shanahan pitched the entire game giving up only three hits. The Indians racked up 15 hits on the day. The top two teams in the Panhandle Conference earn a berth in the FCCAA State Tournament.
