CHIPOLA STUDENT NAMED GUISTWHITE SCHOLAR
MARIANNA—Chipola College student Krystle Shelton of Altha has been named a Guistwhite Scholar by Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society for Community College students.
The Chipola sophomore will receive a $5,000 scholarship which accompanies the prestigious award. Students from more than 1,700 community colleges around the world are eligible for the annual awards program which serves to recognize the scholarly achievements of community college students. No more than 20 Guistwhite awards are made annually which makes Shelton’s award even more significant.
Applicants must have a 3.5 or better GPA, and are judged on community service, work experience, honors and participation in out-of-class academic enrichment programs.
Shelton is a 2005 graduate of Blountstown High School. She is a student in the Chipola Honors Program and an officer in the college’s award-winning chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. She also is active in the Chipola Science Club and other service organizations.
The Guistwhite award was based in part on her outstanding academic achievement and leadership in service projects over the past year. Shelton created and administered the “Behind the Scenes” program to encourage reading and creative expression among middle school students. Five area middle schools organized groups of students to read novels and to create scenes from the book. The groups visited the college to display their scenes for judging.
Shelton also connected Phi Theta Kappa to the American Heart Association by training as a team captain for the annual Heart Walk. She led a team of PTK members for the annual event in Panama City, and also organized fundraising activities for the Heart Association.
Shelton was a key leader in Chipola’s Project Prom for hurricane victims at Bay St. Louis High School in Mississippi. She led a team of Chipola students who collected prom gowns and decorations for students at the hurricane-ravaged high school.
Shelton attended the 2006 Phi Theta Kappa Honors Institute at the University of Delaware which focused on academic studies.
Shelton is planning a major in pharmacy at the University of Florida.
Shelton is the daughter of Lora and the late Tony Shelton of Altha.
The Guistwhite Scholarship Program is named in honor of Dr. Jack Guistwhite and his wife, Margaret. More than 25 years ago, Dr. Guistwhite developed the very first designated transfer scholarship for Phi Theta Kappa members, while an administrator at Florida Atlantic University.

CHIPOLA MATH PROFESSOR PRESENTS PAPER AT S.I.T.E. CONFERENCE
MARIANNA—Chipola College math professor Rose Cavin was co-presenter of a paper at the 18th annual International conference of the Society for Information technology and Teacher Education (SITE) in March in San Antonio.
Cavin and Dr. Maria Fernandez from Florida State University presented a paper entitled, “Developing Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPCK) in Preservice Math and Science Teachers.” The project focused on the development of TPCK of the students enrolled in Chipola's teacher education course, Integrating Technology in the Classroom.
Cavin said, “With the current focus on technology in the classroom, the area of TPCK has become a hot topic. It focuses on the use of technology, not as a personal tool for teachers in recording grades and preparing class materials, but to engage students in learning subject area content. It involves making decisions related to which technological tool is most effective in presenting a given topic to a specified group of students, and requires an overlapping knowledge of technology, pedagogy and content.”
The full paper will be published in the conference proceeding. The continuation of the research is the focus of Cavin’s dissertation study currently underway at FSU.
The Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education (SITE) represents teacher educators and affiliated organizations in all disciplines, who are interested in the creation and dissemination of knowledge about the use of information technology in teacher education and faculty/staff development. SITE promotes the development and dissemination of theoretical knowledge, conceptual research, and professional practice through conferences, books, projects, and various publications.
This year, over 1,500 presentations were made in 25 topic areas, one of which was (TPCK). Topics ranged from electronic portfolios, video-taped analysis of teacher interns, and digital storytelling to specific content area presentations in math, science, and teacher education.
