CHIPOLA PHI THETA KAPPA WINS INTERNATIONAL AWARDS

MARIANNA Chipola Junior College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa received international recognition at the 84th annual International Phi Theta Kappa Convention held recently in Nashville.  Chipola's Nu Chi chapter received one of ten Leadership Hallmark awards and advisor Jody Spooner received a 2002 Distinguished Advisor Award.

Faculty Adviser Jody Spooner said, "This recognition was even more amazing given that only two Florida chapters (Chipola and St. Petersburg College) received awards in our Hallmark areas. We received two International Hallmark Awards, including one for Leadership, which is awarded to only ten chapters among the 450 chapters that applied."

International awards were based on the chapter’s ability to incorporate the four hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa: leadership, scholarship, service and fellowship, into their activities. Chipola's PTK members worked on a month-long service project to help the needy in the community. Students also raised money for children at Christmas, held food drives and collected school supplies for elementary school students. Earlier this year, the group sponsored its second annual Honors Day for High School Juniors on the CJC campus.

Chipola students joined over 3,500 PTK members and alumni April 3-6 for the convention, which is the largest convention of college students in the nation.  Students attended educational forums relating to leadership, service and recruitment.  Students also had the opportunity to hear some high-profile speakers, including Trisha Yearwood, who was presented with the 2002 Distinguished Alumni Award; a debate between Democrat James Carville and Republican Newt Gingrich and an address on “Healing with Joy” by Dr. Patch Adams.

CJC students attending the convention included Holli Crawford, Stephanie Crisp, Kegera Matthews-Lawrence, Megan Reece, Sarah Bollinger, Laura Davis, Chrissie Prichard, Amiee Wynne, Charles Alexander and faculty advisor, Jody Spooner.

The Indians also whipped the Raiders 16-8 April 16 in Niceville. Ivan Nacaratta hit a two-run homer in the first to get the Indians off to a strong start. He finished 4 for 6 on the day. Last year, Nacaratta hit a two-run homer to beat OW and give CJC the 2001 Conference Championship. Blake Balkcom hit his 17th homerun of the year. Joey Wilson also had a solo homer.

Winning pitcher was Troy Fry who relieved Johnny Lynch. Chad Coffee, Adam Dunavant and Kellen Ludwig also saw action on the mound.

The Indians were scheduled to host Pensacola on April 18 at 5 p.m. to complete a suspended game in which CJC was trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third.

As of April 18, PJC and TCC were tied for second in the league at 11-8. TCC was scheduled to play at Gulf Coast April 18 with TCC down 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth. If TCC and PJC win on Thursday, it will force a best two out of three playoff this weekend at Chipola.

Chipola is ranked first in the state at 35-8 and 14-3 in the conference. Last season, the Indians finished second in the state tournament with a 43-16 record and a Panhandle Conference Championship. Johnson has led the Indians to state four times in six seasons at the helm of the CJC program.

Several Chipola players are among the top performers in the state. Ricardo Nanita is sixth on the state hitting list with a .425 batting average, including 15 homeruns and 52 RBI's. Blake Balckom is tenth in the state with a .394 average, including 15 homeruns.

CJC Pitchers Kyle Pawelcyzk and Troy Fry are 19 and 20 respectively on the state ERA list. Kellen Ludwig has four saves on the year.

Five Indians have committed to four-year colleges for next season: Blake Balkcom-Florida State University; Russell Martin-North Carolina State University; Kyle Pawelcyzk-Louisiana State University; Johnny Lynch-University of South Alabama; and Ricardo Nanita-Florida International University.

ROY B. BEALL SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT WINS STATE AWARD

MARIANNA – The family of the late Roy B. Beall attended the Council for Resource Development (CRD) Region IV Annual Conference in Orlando April 10-13 to accept Florida's Benefactor Award in recognition of the Roy B. Beall Scholarship Endowment offered through the Chipola Junior College Foundation.

CJC executive vice president, Dr. Gene Prough says, "During his lifetime, Beall exemplified all of the traits of an outstanding benefactor.  He gave not only his financial support to Chipola, but he also was a steadfast leader and long-time volunteer on behalf of the college."

During 1946 and 1947, a group of business leaders met to discuss the possibility of opening a private college for students in the area.  In the summer of 1947, Chipola Junior College opened its doors on the campus of the old Marianna Army Base.  Beall was one of the founders and also served as Chairman of the Chipola Board of Directors from 1946 to 1963, member of the Chipola Advisory Board from 1963 to1968 and member of the Chipola Board of Trustees from 1968 to 1969.  During his 23 years of continuous service to Chipola, he never missed a single meeting of any board or agency on which he served.  His early leadership at Chipola was instrumental in developing the college into the successful institution it is today from its humble beginnings as a small private college with barely enough funds to exist.

In 1983, Beall approached Chipola officials about sponsoring a scholarship drive that would support the top two academic students and top academic athlete from each of Jackson County’s six high schools.  His idea was to award each with a one-year scholarship to begin their pursuit of higher education.  He raised the money single-handedly and expanded the program the next year to include all five of the counties within the college’s district.  This initial fundraising effort has grown into a scholarship endowment bearing his name with an account balance of over $122,000.

CJC president Dr. Dale O'Daniel, says, "Mr. Roy's contributions and service to Chipola cannot fully be measured.  Over many years, he gave unselfishly of his time and resources for the benefit of so many past, present and future CJC students.  The contributions of leadership, financial support and exemplary volunteerism are the hallmarks of his great life. Chipola was very fortunate to call him a friend and benefactor."

The purpose of the CRD Benefactor Award is to thank and provide recognition to individuals, foundations or businesses for outstanding contributions to community colleges.  The CRD Benefactor Award embodies the ideals of philanthropy, leadership and volunteerism in the service of community, technical and junior colleges. The Roy B. Beall is now in the running for a national resource development award.

For information on the Roy B. Beall Scholarship Endowment, or any other scholarships offered through the Chipola Foundation, contact Foundation Director Julie Fuqua at (850) 718-2478.
