SUMMER DINNER/DANCE DEDICATED TO THE LATE BILLY BRYAN
MARIANNA— The Villagers, a popular, local band from the 1960’s, will perform at
Chipola’s “Endless Summer” dinner and dance set for Saturday, Aug. 21, at the
Marianna National Guard Armory.
The performance is dedicated to the memory of the late Billy Bryan of Bascom, an
original member of the Villagers, who passed away earlier this year. Billy was
drummer for the group and performed at the Villagers reunion concert in 2008
which was staged four decades after their 1968 performance at the National Guard
Armory.
Billy’s daughter, Keisha Sunday, said, “Daddy loved the band and he looked
forward every year to their reunion.” Billy played in the Villagers along with
his fellow members Cliff Ellis of Chipley, Allen Myers of Malone, George Boyer
of Port St. Joe, Walter Dover of Quincy and Andy Murray of Chattahoochee. The
group will perform favorites from the 1960’s at the Aug. 21 event, including
their own hit “Laugh It Off.”
Billy was a lifelong resident of Bascom. He is survived by his wife Janet Taylor
Bryan, two daughters Keisha Sunday of Bascom, Deza Rae Smith of Marianna, a son
Josh Bryan of Marianna and five grandchildren whom he adored. He played
basketball at Malone High School and attended Chipola in the 1960’s. He worked
for years as a car and truck salesman at Chipola Ford in Marianna, but music
always played a big part in his life.
Billy’s daughter said, “Daddy was a good man who loved music and loved to sing.”
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bascom where he sang gospel
music. Billy also was a founding member of the Bryan Brothers Quartet, a
gospel group that is still going after several decades. Through his inspiration,
he fostered the tradition of gospel singing. His legacy lives on through his
nephews John and Dax Bryan who continue the Bryan Brothers Quartet.
In addition to the Villagers, a professional DJ will spin dance tunes for Aug.
21 event. Endless Summer is planned to reunite old Chipola friends and alumni
for a relaxing evening to benefit the college’s athletic programs. Chipola
College began in 1947 and has enjoyed more than 60 great years including
numerous state and national athletic titles, and thousands of individual success
stories among its graduates.
Robert Trammell, incoming president of the Chipola Appreciation Club and
longtime supporter, says, “While music has evolved from Big Band to Rock N’ Roll
and Hip Hop during Chipola’s 60-plus years, the bonds and friendships built at
this little college have remained constant.”
Trammell points to the commitment of alumni and supporters as the key to the
college’s success. “Without strong support from our people, Chipola Athletics
would be unable to perform at the national level,” he says.
Tickets are $25 per person with a social hour at 6:30 p.m. Tables of eight are
available for $200. Summer casual attire is recommended. Barbecue chef Bobby
Sims will prepare his famous, mouth-watering pulled pork for the dinner. Special
guest for the evening is Leonard Hamilton, head men’s basketball coach at
Florida State University.

CHIPOLA TO FUND
MORE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR COMPUTER MAJORS
MARIANNA—Chipola College students interested in computers and information
technology are encouraged to apply for the “WIRED for Technology” scholarship
program. Chipola was recently notified that scholarship funds will continue
through the Fall 2010 term. The program funded 23 technology students during the
2009-10 academic year.
The “WIRED for Technology" scholarships can only
be awarded students enrolled in computer-related programs.
Applications will be accepted from Associate in
Arts (AA) degree-seeking students majoring in Computer Science and Information
Technology. These students would likely take classes at Chipola for two years
and then transfer to a university to complete the junior and senior years of a
bachelor’s degree in a technology-related field.
Associate in Science (AS) degrees in Computer Engineering Technology, Computer
Information Technology, and Networking Services Technology are also included
among the eligible programs. These degrees prepare students for careers after
taking one to two years of coursework.
Scholarships are also available for Workforce Certificate program in Computer
Systems Technology which can be completed in as little as one year.
The new scholarships may fund all or part of costs for tuition and fees for
students in computer-related majors or programs of study. The scholarships
may be awarded in addition to other scholarships or grants; however, the
selection panel will also consider other funds available to students through the
Foundation or Financial Aid Office. The newly funded scholarships will be
available only for the fall 2010 semester. .
The WIRED for Technology project is being funded by the U.S. Department of Labor
through a consortium of panhandle colleges in partnership with the University of
West Florida and Florida's Great Northwest.

MARIANNA—The Chipola Health Science Program will offer a Paramedic to RN bridge
program beginning in the Summer of 2011.
The course Career Mobility (NUR 1002 M) is required for both
Paramedics and LPNs seeking entry
into the nursing program. The course will be offered fall 2010 and spring 2011.
The Career Mobility course is partially online with a skill lab component.

SPANISH AND
FRENCH NIGHT CLASSES OFFERED AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer foreign language classes during the evening
this fall in French and Spanish.
Dana Ayers will teach Elementary French I (FRE 1120) on Monday and Wednesday
evenings from 5:30-7:30 p.m., and Intermediate French I (FRE 2220) on Tuesday
and Thursday evenings from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Both are four credit hour classes.
Dr. Mark Ebel will teach Elementary Spanish I (SPN 1120) on Monday and Wednesday
evenings from 5:30-7:30 p.m. This is a four credit hour class.
Colleges and universities in Florida require a foreign language before awarding
a bachelor’s degree. The foreign language minimum requirement may be
fulfilled by taking two years of the same foreign language at the high school
level or 8-10 hours of the same language at the college level. Many majors
require a third foreign language course.
Fall registration for returning students (those enrolled in the spring or summer

BOYD DELIVERS
$1.1 MILLION GRANT TO CHIPOLA COLLEGE
MARIANNA—Current and future
Chipola College students will benefit from a $1.1 million federal grant which
was recently awarded to the college.
U.S. Rep. Allen Boyd visited
the Chipola campus Aug. 19, to present the check for a Student Support Services
Grant. The college requested $220,000 per year for five years to implement a
project to help 140 first generation students enter college and complete a
degree.
Congressman Boyd said, “Chipola College has a long history of providing students
with the skills and talents they need to be successful in their future
endeavors, whether that be continuing their education or entering the workplace.
This federal funding will help them continue this tradition, and I am very proud
to have been a part of bringing this award to the Chipola College community.”
Chipola president Dr. Gene
Prough, said, “We were excited to receive the good news from Congressman Boyd
that our grant request had been funded. These programs will expand
opportunities for our students and prospective students for years to come.”
The Support Services project will include: college success coaches, the use of
special curriculum to help students remain engaged, supplemental instruction,
tutoring in the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) and the creation of a
special lab space for students in the program.
The funding also will make available career and life planning, academic advising
and course placement, counseling, and transfer assistance into one of Chipola’s
four-year programs, or to other colleges and universities.

ROTARY HELPS CHIPOLA—Marianna
Rotary Club President Philip Tyler (center) and Scholarship Chairman Kenneth
Anderson (left) recently presented Chipola Foundation Director Julie Fuqua with
a check to fund four scholarships for the 2010-11 school year. The Marianna
Rotary Club was established in 1929 and follows a club motto of “Service Above
Self.” Many previous Marianna Rotary Scholarship recipients now serve the
community as leaders in education, nursing, and banking. A recent
scholarship recipient is attending the Florida State University College of
Medicine and another recipient credits his career in the U.S. Navy with the
scholarship he received which enabled him to attend Chipola. The Marianna Rotary
Club is proud to support the education process and Chipola College.

COLLINS IS CHIPOLA EMPLOYEE OF
THE YEAR
MARIANNA—Kim Collins has been named Chipola College’s Career Employee of the
Year for 2010.
Collins has served as a Senior Staff Assistant in the college’s Enrollment
Services Department since 1996 and has worked at the college since 1989.
She says, “Chipola is a great place to work. I enjoy helping our students and
working with so many great people.”
Collins supervisor Dr. Jayne Roberts, says, “Mrs. Collins is always pleasant and
courteous to all, very reliable and is a dedicated employee. She comes in early
and stays late. She is pleasant to be around; she
likes her job and does it extremely well! She brings a positive and
outstanding effort to her job.”
Collins is a very active member of Chipola’s chapter of Florida Association of
Community Colleges and the Chipola Career Employees Association.
Kim and her
husband, Stewart, have three children and six grandchildren. She is active
in Bethlehem Baptist Church.
The Employee of the Year
award recognizes the exceptional work of Chipola's career service employees.
Candidates are nominated by fellow employees for exhibiting courtesy, motivation
and professionalism. Annual winners receive a $1,000 bonus, reserved
parking for a year, a one-year membership in FACC, and a $100 gift certificate
from the college Book Store.

CHIPOLA PBL WINS NATIONAL AWARD
MARIANNA—The Chipola College
chapter of Phi Beta Lambda captured a national award at the recent PBL National
Leadership Conference in Nashville, TN.

Vikki Milton, says, “Competing at the national level is an honor in itself, as
PBL students, state teams and local chapters must earn the right to compete by
placing first or second at the state level in the various event categories which
represent the organization’s focus on business and leadership development.”
Chipola
students, Devon Beachum, Jordan Hatcher, Michael Ingram, Tracy Scott and Paige
White along with adviser, Vikki Milton, attended the conference. Michael
Ingram was awarded top honors, placing 6th in the nation in Financial
Analysis and Decision Making.
In addition to competitions,
students participated in a variety of business and leadership workshops.
Students enjoyed keynote speaker for the event, Robin Crow - author, innovative
guitarist and owner of Dark Horse Recording. Crow’s recording company is
home to Faith Hill, Allison Krauss, Neil Diamond and Tim McGraw to name a few.
Chipola College PBL is a
local chapter of the national business organization. The organization
strives to develop competent, aggressive business leadership, as well as,
strengthen the confidence of students in themselves and their work.
Students need not be business majors to join, as business skills are necessary
in nearly every profession today.
A PBL Kick-off
Reception is scheduled for Tues., Aug 31, from 11 -1 pm,

CHIPOLA THEATER ANNOUNCES
UPCOMING SEASON
MARIANNA—Chipola College Theatre director Charles Sirmon has planned another
exciting season of great shows.
The season opens with the Fall comedy, “Dearly Departed,” Nov. 4-7. Auditions
are set for Tuesday, Sept. 7 and Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m. Not since
“Steel Magnolias,” has a more dysfunctional group of Southern eccentrics
gathered below the Mason-Dixon. When the patriarch of the family keels over
dead, the struggle to get him buried involves the whole clan, including the
not-so-grieving widow who wants to put “Mean and Surly” on the tombstone.
Audiences amused by “Greater Tuna,” will enjoy this more ambitious trip down a
rustic main street written by David Bottrell and Jessie Jones.
Chipola’s Spring musical will be the smash hit, “Little Shop of Horrors.” One of
the longest-running Off-Broadway shows of all time, this affectionate spoof of
1950’s sci-fi movies has become a household name with a successful film version
and a score by the songwriting team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. Charming,
tuneful and hilarious, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, “Little Shop of
Horrors” never fails to entertain. Auditions are Jan. 10 and 11, with shows,
March 10-13.
Chipola’s annual Summer children’s show is Aesop’s (Oh-So-Slightly Updated)
Fables by Kim Esop-Wylie. The play weaves six of Aesop’s most famous fables into
a show that’s funky, fast-paced, and full of surprises. The show features
favorite tales, including: The Dog and the Bone, the Tortoise and the Hare, the
Lion and the Mouse, the Fox and the Grapes, the Country Maid, and the Miller,
His Son and the Donkey.
Auditions for the children’s show are March 21 and 22. The show will play for
hundreds of school children with an evening show for the public on May 12 at 7
p.m.
Theater fans are invited to join the ACT (Applauding Chipola Theatre) Fund.
Benefits include advance ticket selection and VIP seating for all Chipola
productions.

PLAYER STILL MAJOR LEAGUE HOMERUN LEADER
TORONTO, CANADA—Former Chipola baseball player Jose Bautista is still Major
League Baseball’s homerun leader with 40 as of Aug. 23.
Bautista, a
right-fielder for the Toronto Blue Jays, smacked two homeruns in the Jays 3-2
win over the Yankees on Aug. 23 the New York Yankees. The two gave him a Major
League-leading 40 home runs on the season and accounted for all of the offense
for the Blue Jays (65-59).
Bautista belted 44 home runs combined over his past three big league campaigns.
With 38 games remaining on the schedule for the Blue Jays, Bautista sits seven
home runs shy of George Bell's single-season club record of 47 bombs in 1987.
The right fielder is the first player to achieve 40 homers in a season for the
Jays since Carlos Delgado launched 42 in '03.
Bautista was a member of the Chipola Baseball squad before being drafted by the
Pittsburg Pirates in the 20th round of the 2000 amateur draft.
His official signing came in May 2001, the same year the Indians captured the
Panhandle Conference Championship and was the NJCAA Region VIII Runner-up.
During his time in the majors, the 29 year-old has also played for the Pirates,

BASIC AUTOMOTIVE COURSES SET
AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer three basic automotive courses which are
open to the public.
Chipola automotive instructor Chase Vlieg will teach all three courses in the
college Automotive Technology Building (P-103). Students are encouraged to
register as soon as possible. The cost of each course is $40. Registration and
payment must be completed two days prior to beginning of class.
Basic Car Knowledge meets Tuesday, Sept. 14 and Thursday, Sept. 16, from 6 to
8:30 p.m. The five-hour course is designed for those who want to know basic
automotive tips to feel confident with car repairs. Core topics include:
basic car safety tips, oil change, tire repair, basic automotive maintenance and
what to look for when buying a car.
Introduction to Automotive Mechanics will meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings,
Sept. 21 to Oct. 28, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The 30-hour course is designed to
provide the student with entry level skills to ASE standards for automotive
technicians. The use of diagnostic equipment is stressed.
Auto Detailing will meet Saturday, Nov. 6, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The five-hour
course covers five major areas of auto detailing: exterior, interior, engine,
trunk, and special problems. Core topics include: washing, buffing,
touch-up painting, detailing chemical equipment, accessories, auto restoration,
marketing strategies and entrepreneurial skills.
