CHIPOLA PANHANDLE
CLASSIC TO HELP FIGHT CANCER
MARIANNA—The Chipola Men’s Basketball team has
scheduled the Chipola Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers awareness during the
Panhandle Classic, December 3-5, 2009 in the Milton H. Johnson Health Center.
The latest FCCAA Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Poll will be well represented in the
Panhandle Classic with #1 Central Florida, #2 Northwest Florida, #3 Chipola, #4
Tallahassee, #5 Gulf Coast, and #6 Santa Fe all participating this weekend.
The Chipola Basketball staff
and other participating coaching staffs will wear sneakers instead of dress
shoes with their usual game attire during weekend games to show support for the
American Cancer Society and the fight against cancer.
By wearing sneakers with their
suits, participating coaches are drawing attention to the fact that cancer
remains a major health concern. Since 1993 the Coaches vs. Cancer program
has generated nearly $40 million in direct revenue for the Society’s fight
against cancer.
“The fight against cancer is a
very important issue to my family,” said Joc Calloway, Chipola Assistant Coach
and Event Organizer. “We hope this year’s events draws awareness and
creates a major impact toward building a cancer-free society.”
A portion of ticket and
concession revenue from the Panhandle Classic will be donated to the American
Cancer Society in the fight against cancer. Chipola Athletics will also
host another fundraising event on February 13, 2010 in the annual WBCA Think
Pink Game.
The American Cancer Society is
dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by saving lives,
diminishing suffering and preventing cancer through research, education,

CHIPOLA ALUMNUS RUNNING FOR FLORIDA
SENATE
TALLAHASSEE—Chipola College alumnus Bill Montford has made his choice to pursue
a seat in the Florida State Senate as a representative for District 6.
A native of Blountstown, Montford was a student at Chipola in the 1960’s and
moved to Tallahassee to attend Florida State University in 1967. While at FSU he
received his Bachelor of Science Degree in
Mathematics Education and Master of Science Degree in Administration and
Supervision. He also received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Flagler
College.
Montford began his teaching career as a math teacher at Belle Vue Middle School
in Tallahassee in 1969. He served as a school administrator for 26 years
and spent 18 of those years as a high school principal. He was elected
Superintendent of Leon County Schools in 1996. Montford is currently the Chief
Executive Officer of the Florida Association of District School Superintendents.
Bill lives in Tallahassee with his wife Jane, who is a first grade public school
teacher in Leon County. Jane also attended Chipola and that is where they
met in a speech class. Bill said, "That was the most enjoyable class I
ever had." Bill and Jane have two children, William J. Montford, IV (Bill) and
Katherine Montford Peters. Bill (IV) and wife Emily have two children,
William J. Montford, V and Henry James Montford. Katherine and husband
Kevin have one daughter, Eleanor Jane.
Montford said, “Growing up in North Florida, hard work and community service
have always been a large part of my life. That’s how I was raised, and how Jane
and I raised our children. I am proud of my professional accomplishments and
community involvement, and I stand by my record of public service. Someone once
said of me, “He is one of us!” That is the best compliment that I could ever
receive.”
Montford also served two terms as Leon County Commissioner and is very active in
a number of professional and civic organizations. Montford serves on the
Board of Directors for the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science, Challenger
Learning Center, the Florida Center for Performing Arts and Education, and The
Village Square. He was also appointed by Governor Crist to the Governor’s
Council on Physical Fitness, and the Legislative Committee on Intergovernmental
Relations.
Montford has
received numerous awards and recognitions for his dedication to education and
the community. Bill was honored as Florida Superintendent of the Year in
2002. In 2008, the Leon County School Board named William J. Montford,
III Middle School in his honor. Montford said, “Throughout my 40-year
career as a teacher, principal, superintendent, county commissioner, and CEO of
the state superintendent’s association, I have demonstrated my ability to build
consensus and reach responsible compromises to get the job done, and at the same
time stand firm on my convictions and principles. At the end of the day, what
matters most is that you accomplish the goals you set out to achieve for those
you represent.”
