CHIPOLA
SHINES AT STATE AFC CONVENTION
MARIANNA—Chipola College was one of the most talked-about colleges at the 2011
Association of Florida Colleges Annual Convention in Naples.
Chipola garnered numerous honors, including chapter recognition,
membership awards and leadership awards.
The Chipola Chapter was named a Platinum Chapter, the highest recognition
a chapter can receive for chapter leadership and activities.
The Chipola Chapter accepted a special membership award for having 83% of
full time employees at Chipola as AFC members.
Chipola College Publications Coordinator Evelyn Ward presided over the
state-wide conference as the 2011 Association President. Ward has served
in this position since January and will conclude her year of service on December
31.
During her term as president, Ward facilitated the name change of the
organization which was formerly known as the Florida Association of Community
Colleges (FACC). Ward said, “We are excited to have
the opportunity to change the name of our association to better reflect the
exciting changes in our state system and to better represent our constituents -
the Florida colleges and their employees.”
Ward is the fourth Chipola employee to serve as statewide president,
including Chipola Executive Assistant to the President, Joyce Traynom; Chipola
athletic director Dr. Dale O’Daniel, and former associate athletic director
Sandra Harrell.
During the convention, Ward also presented an Educational Session on the
new AFC Certified College Professional leadership program beginning in February
2012. This program will provide AFC members with the opportunity to earn a
designation related to their work as a college professional, and expose them to
content and leadership experiences they may not be able to obtain elsewhere.
The designation will be recognized not only by their college, but by the entire
Florida State College system.
Chipola College Network Coordinator Matt White presented an Educational
Session, “There’s an App for That! Are you getting the SMART out of your
smartphone?” White’s presentation highlighted how to get the most
out of smartphones, including new and exciting apps and tips. White also serves
as the State Parliamentarian on the State Board of Directors.
Pat Barfield was honored as the Chipola College Unsung Hero for her outstanding
work in the chapter. Barfield, Departmental Staff Assistant for Institutional
Development and Planning, also serves as the Vice President-Elect for Regions
and Chapters and sits on the state Board of Directors.
Several Chipola employees will serve in state leadership roles next year.
Pat Barfield will serve as the Vice President of Regions and Chapters, Evelyn
Ward will serve as Past President, and Alice Pendergrass will serve on the state
Credentials Committee.
Also attending the convention from Chipola, were: Katy Flowers, Stacey
Hinson, and Dr. Jim Froh.
AFC is a statewide organization open to all employees, retirees and
trustees of Florida's 28 state colleges. AFC provides professional development
opportunities for its members, and represents the interests of community
colleges before the Florida Legislature. Today, all 28 of the state's public
colleges support the work of the Association as do nearly 9,000 individual
employee and retiree members.

STUDENTS VISIT APALACHICOLA BLUFFS AND RAVINES PRESERVE
MARIANNA—Chipola College biology professor Dr. David Hilton and 14
students from Conservation Biology (BSC1059) recently hiked the 3.75 mile Garden
of Eden Trail at the Apalachicola Bluffs and Ravines Preserve near Bristol.
The students were able to observe steephead ravines, some of the rarest
of freshwater habitats. Dr. Hilton says, “These unique features are the
only places on earth where two rare evergreens, the Florida Torreya and Florida
Yew can be found.”
The trail begins in a longleaf and wiregrass upland and ends with a
spectacular view at Alum Bluff, 135 feet above the Apalachicola River. The
hike is moderately difficult as hikers climb down into and then out of two of
the ravines.
The 6,295 acre Bluff and Ravines preserve is owned and maintained by the
Nature Conservancy. Several restoration projects are currently underway,
from the re-introduction of native species to the control and removal of
invasive, non-native species. The Nature Conservancy also provides land
management assistance for neighboring Torreya State Park.

CHIPOLA’S
AUTO TECH PROGRAM IS BELLWETHER FINALIST
MARIANNA—Chipola College’s Automotive
Technology program recently was selected as a finalist for a Bellwether
Award in the Workforce Development division.
Chipola instructors John Gardner and Chase Vlieg will present an overview of
their innovative program at the Community College Futures Assembly set for
January 2012 in Orlando.
The Chipola Automotive program utilizes an industry-based curriculum in
partnership with local dealerships, shops, and an advisory committee to provide
students with the competitive edge in this ever changing high-tech training
environment. The Chipola program also was named a Bellwether runner-up in 2006
and Florida’s Best Business & Education partnership in 2004.
Chipola’s automotive technology program is centered on today’s students.
Instructor John Gardner says, “Today’s technologically savvy students grew up
with computers, cell phones and video games. If we want a successful program in
today’s ‘I want it now,’ microwave society our programs must evolve as well. In
order to do so we had to reinvent the wheel.”
Gardner said outdated training videos and materials with voice over and
slow animation were not holding the students’ attention. He and his assistant
Chase Vlieg formed a partnership with the entertainment industry to create a new
fast-paced “Infotainment” training system. Infobase Learning, Films Media Group
agreed to work with Chipola, ACI and
film experts Brenton Productions to produce an ASE
Automotive Training Video Series. Brenton produces several successful TV shows,
including Two Guys Garage, Truck Universe, Hi Rev Tuners, Shadetree
Mechanic, Crank & Chrome and Wounded Worrier Series.
The Chipola instructors starred in the
new training series with help from industry partners Auto Value and A-Tech
Automotive Training Systems. Gardner says, “We created the first ever ASE
Certification series written, scripted, and on screen talent by two practicing
automotive technology instructors with over 22 years of combined experience
earning the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) stamp of approval.”
Each segment contains: Hands on Demonstrations, Parts Identification,
Theory of Operation, Professionalism Dialogue, Motivational Tips, ASE
Preparation & Five ASE Style Questions. The no fluff informative videos are 3-10
minutes each, and designed to be utilized on internet based programs or stand
alone DVD’s. Gardner says the series was strategically scripted and produced to
meet the needs of today’s automotive students, instructors and technicians. All
videos are quick and to the point, with multiple shots at different locations,
positive, bright and upbeat. The DVD’s/curriculum package was designed to meet
the needs of all three types of learners: visual, audio and kinesthetic. All
content includes animation and graphics, close ups of components and parts
labeling, ASE questions with highlighted answers, demonstrations explained
verbally with all parts labeled. All live demonstrations with tools and
equipment involve the audience in the learning process.
Any institution can implement the DVD’s into their current program.
ASE and NATEF correlations are an integral part of the curriculum package.
Students and instructors can learn theory together and then reinforce the
content technically with hands-on experience.
Gardner says the impact of the DVD series has been nationwide. Automotive
publishers Infobase Learning, Films on Demand Goodheart-Wilcox, Delmar, Cengage
Learning and Pearson are currently developing their automotive curricula with
this system, either by emulation or direct utilization.
Gardner says, “Our goal is to train tomorrow’s workforce in a relevant
and applicable way meeting the needs of present and future industries with
teaching methods that reach today’s students.”
Information on the DVD series is available at filmsmediagroup.com

JAZZMATAZZ Show Choir
Concert moved to january
MARIANNA—The popular Chipola College Show Choir series, Jazzmatazz, has
an interesting twist this year. It is called “Stadsmatazz” to honor Joan
Stadsklev, retiring Associate Dean of Chipola’s
Fine and Performing Arts Department.
The song and dance performances under the direction of Angie White and
Dr. Josh Martin are scheduled for Jan. 5, 6 and 7 at 7 p.m. in the Chipola
Theatre.
Originally slated for December, Jazzmatazz has been rescheduled in part
to allow more alumni to come back to campus to be a part of this historic event.
Signature songs highlighting the history of the group are slated to be
performed.
Dr. Daniel Powell, Associate Dean of Fine and Performing Arts, says,
“Come join this ‘now and then’ experience as the Show Choir electrifies the
stage to honor one of their founding directors: Joan Stadsklev.”
Powell invites everyone to enjoy the high energy group that will feature musical
selections from a wide variety of styles. Show Choir members are selected
through competitive auditions and Powell indicates the talent of this year’s
group is exceptionally strong.
Tickets go on sale Nov. 28 and are available from Show Choir members and
through the Fine and Performing Arts Department at (850) 718-2277.
