CHIPOLA MATH PROF NAMED TO NCATE REVIEW BOARD
MARIANNA—Chipola College associate professor of mathematics Dr. Irma Cruz-White
was recently appointed to the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher
Education (NCATE) Board of Program Reviewers.
NCATE is the teaching profession’s mechanism to help establish high quality
teacher preparation through the process of professional accreditation of
schools, colleges and departments of education. Members of NCATE’s Board of
program reviewers help to provide consistent policies for high-quality, rigorous
reviews that the profession demands.
Cruz-White was trained to as a NCATE Program Reviewer in 2005. She is a member
of the National Council of Teacher of Mathematics. Since 2006, she has reviewed
more than a dozen Mathematics Education Programs for National Accreditation.
Dr. Cruz-White has taught at Chipola for the past five years where she also
directs Chipola Honors students on special projects. She recently developed two
new courses: MAT 4905-Supervised Research in Mathematics and MAS 4301-
Introduction to Abstract Algebra.
Dr. Cruz-White was selected to participate in a workshop on
RNA in Biology, Bioengineering and Nanotechnology at the 2007 Institute for
Mathematics and Its Applications Minneaopolis, and the Reconnect Program from
the Center for Dynamic Data Analysis (DyDAn) at Rutgers University in 2007. She
presented Topology of Spiral Waves in Excitable Media at the Sumners Fest in
Tallahassee in 2007. She was co-organizer of the session: Calculus Tricks of the
Trade at the Project NEXT Workshops Albuquerque in 2005, and a poster session on
the same project at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Atlanta in 2005.
She was selected as a Project NEXT Fellow in 2004, a MAA (Mathematical
Association of America) program for New Experiences in Teaching. She has served
as a Courtesy Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Florida
State University offering graduate credit courses in Number Theory and Modern
Geometry for in-service teachers in Jackson County Area through Chipola College.

CHIPOLA HOSTS TALLAHASSEE IN BIG
CONFERENCE MATCHUPS
MARIANNA—Chipola hosts Tallahassee in a pair of big conference games on
Saturday, Feb. 7.
The Chipola Indians remained perfect (8-0) in the Panhandle Conference race with
66-57 win at Pensacola on Feb. 4.
Malcolm Armstead led the Indians with 13 points and 24 rebounds. Torye Pelham
hit 12 points. Jeremy Jacob scored 11 and pulled down 14 rebounds. Casey
Mitchell had 11 points and 6 boards.
The Indians lead the conference race and are ranked first in the state and
national polls. Gulf Coast (5-3) is in second in the league. TCC is (3-5), NWF
is (2-6) and PJC is (2-6).
The Indians scored a 78-71 win over
Northwest State in front of a standing-room-only
homecoming crowd.
The Indians led by 10 at the half, but Northwest took the lead mid-way through
the final half. The hometown crowd proved too much for the visiting
Raiders as Chipola held on to pull out the 78-71 win.
The Lady Indians (6-2) moved into a tie for first in the conference race with a
60-46 win at Pensacola on Feb. 4. Latoya Williams led Chipola with 20
points and 17 rebounds.
Chipola (6-2) is tied for first with Gulf Coast (6-2). PJC and NWF are both
(4-4). TCC is (0-8).
Both squads travel to NWF for a pair of games on Feb. 14. Chipola returns home
to host Pensacola on Feb. 17 before closing out the season at Gulf Coast on Feb.
21.

converge on Marianna for the Florida Junior College Men's and Women’s State
Basketball Tournament set for March 4-7 at Chipola College. Advance tickets are
now on sale for the four-day event.
Some 400 basketball players from 16 teams, along with
coaches, cheerleaders and fans will fill nearly 200 hotel rooms during the
tourney. Numerous Division I College coaches and recruiters also are expected to
scout the talent in the competition. Tournament officials estimate that more
than $250,000 will flow into the area during the tournament from food, lodging,
recreation and incidental expenses.
Tournament administrator Ronnie Myers, a former Chipola player, said, “The
tournament is a huge undertaking which requires many volunteers and tremendous
financial support. We could not host this event without the generous support of
our fans, sponsors and advertisers.”
The Jackson County Tourist Development Council awarded a $10,000 grant to the
Chipola Appreciation Club to help promote and operate the tournament.
Waste Management is official host sponsor for the event. Other sponsors include:
the Florida Lottery, Florida Credit Union League, Community South Credit Union,
Focus Credit Union, Envision Credit Union, Jackson County Teachers Credit Union,
Tyndall Federal Credit Union and United Solutions.
Robert Trammell, ticket sales chairman, said,
“Chipola has one of the finest junior college athletic programs in the country
and our people put on one of the best tournaments anywhere. The great
traditions established here by coaching legend Milton Johnson are evident today
in the quality of this tournament.”

VISIT ATLANTA—Chipola College Theatre director Charles Sirmon,
recently led a group of theatre majors and friends on a Theatre weekend in
Atlanta. Chipola majors studied with Atlanta’s number one improv company, “Dad’s
Garage Theatre Company.” Students were taught by an improv professional and
attended the company show. Students also attended the world famous Cirque Du
Soleil production KOOZA at Atlantic Station and visited the High Museum of Art,

STUDENTS NETWORK JIM’S BUFFET
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Network Administration class recently completed a
project for Jim’s Buffet & Grill.
Under the direction of instructor Dean Giles, students installed a new network
linking the front and back offices. The new network allows DSL expenses to be
cut in half.
Instructor Giles said, “Hands-on experience is a key element to the learning
process. Projects like this allow students to apply what they have learned while
serving in the community.”
Jim’s Buffet owner Tarek Gad, who was grateful for the help, wishes to extend a

MARIANNA—Thousands of fans
turned out to cheer for the cheerleaders at the Chipola College Cheerleader
Extravaganza on Feb. 8.
In the varsity squad
competition, Marianna High won first place; Holmes County High finished second;
Lyman (Longwood, FL) High finished third; Wicksburg High finished fourth and
Chipley High finished fifth.
In the Small Varsity
competition Graceville High won first and Sneads High finished second. In the
small junior varsity squad competition, Marianna J. V. won first. In the large
junior varsity squad competition, Pine Forest (Pensacola) High won first; Holmes
County High School finished second; Northview (AL) High finished third and
Wicksburg High finished fourth.
In the Large Middle School Division, Marianna Middle
Cheerleaders won first place. In the Small Middle School Division, Grand
Ridge Middle won first place. Marianna
Middle won the Middle School Spirit Trophy. Marianna High won the Junior
Varsity Spirit Trophy. Chipley High won the Varsity Spirit Trophy.
In the Dance Competition
Graceville won first place and Malone finished second.
Marianna High Varsity was named
Extravaganza Grand Champion for receiving the most points in the overall
competition. Exhibition squads included: JAGS All Stars: Youth Team and
Mini Team and Junior MEGA All Stars.

CHIPOLA TEAMS CLINCH SPOTS IN STATE TOURNEY
MARIANNA—Both
Chipola College basketball teams host Pensacola, Tuesday, Feb. 17, in the final
regular season home game of the year.
Both squads have earned spots in the State JUCO Tournament set for March 4-7 on
the Chipola campus.
The Indians improved a 25-1 overall and 9-0 in conference play with an 89-56
victory over Tallahassee on Feb. 7. Chipola was led in scoring by Josh
Sain and Torye Pelham each with 14 points. Sain was 4 for 4 from the three
point line and made both of his free throw attempts. Gary Flowers added 12
points, 5 assists, 1 block, and 2 steals. Jeremy Jacob and Justin Brownlee
had 10 points apiece. Brownlee had 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Jacob
had 7 rebounds and 2 steals. Darrell Williams had 11 points and 6
rebounds.
Chipola dominated in the first half following a 33-7 run to go up 45-26. The
Indians outscored TCC 44-30 in the second half to set the longest win streak in
Chipola history at 24.
The
Indians lead the conference race and are ranked first in the state and national
polls. They will defend their state title beginning March 5 in the state
tournament. Gulf Coast (6-4) is in second in the league with a chance to make
their first state tournament appearance in several years. NWF is (4-6), TCC is
(3-7) and PJC is (2-7).
The Lady Indians (7-2) are just a half game behind Gulf
Coast (8-2) in the conference race. Chipola scored a 57-35 win over Tallahassee
on Feb. 7.
Latoya Williams led
Chipola with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Sequoyah Griffin had 11 points and
7 rebounds.
Chipola led 32-21 at the half and outscored TCC by 11 in the second half.
Chipola committed only 14 turnovers, marking four straight games with less than
15 turnovers.
The conference standings as of Feb. 12, are: Gulf Coast (8-2), Chipola (7-2),
NWF (5-5), PJC (4-5) and TCC (0-10).
Both Chipola squads travel to Northwest for a pair of games on Feb. 14. Chipola
returns home to host Pensacola on Feb. 17 before closing out the season at Gulf
Coast on Feb. 21.

Milton H. Johnson
Retired
Chipola coach Milton H. Johnson died Friday, Feb. 13, in Marianna.
Coach Milton H. Johnson is among the best to ever coach in community college
basketball. From 1961 to 1993, Johnson won 628 games and led the Indians
seven national tournaments, finishing second in 1974. He was named
Division Coach of the Year nine times, Region VIII Coach of the Year six times
and FCCAA Coach of the Year four times.
Johnson’s winning ways didn’t begin in junior college ball. The legendary
coach gained wide recognition during six years at Campbellton High School
(1955-61) by winning three state titles and rolling up an incredible 55-game
winning streak. His lifetime coaching record includes more than 800 wins.
Johnson played basketball, baseball and football at Bay High in Panama City.
In 1947, he joined Chipola’s first basketball team under Coach Roy Beall. Later
he transferred to East Central Junior College in Mississippi, where he played
basketball and football, and met his wife, the late Evelyn Johnson. Coach
Johnson and his biggest fan, Evelyn, had two sons, Jimmy and David and an infant
grandson.
Johnson finished college at Livingston College (now the University of West
Alabama) where he was an outstanding scorer and defensive star as guard. After
receiving his B.S., he earned a Master’s in Physical Education from Florida
State. He then served for two years in the Army before taking his first
coaching job in Campbellton.
Johnson’s gentle demeanor and professional attitude earned him the respect of
players and coaches alike. Chipola hosts the Milton H. Johnson Classic each
year. The Chipola gymnasium bears the name: Milton H. Johnson Health
Center. And shortly after his retirement in 1993, coaches from the league named
the Panhandle Conference trophy in his honor.
Johnson is a founding member and long-serving officer of the Chipola
Appreciation Club, arguably one of the top athletic booster organizations in
America. Club members raise thousands through annual memberships and corporate
sponsorships and have amassed some $1 million in an athletic endowment.
Johnson was a charter member of the Florida Community College Hall of Fame
(1990) and was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association Hall of
Fame in 1993.
Chipola held two major events in the last couple of years to honor coach
Johnson. Chipola’s Night of Champions in 2007, featured Billy Donovan, coach of
the Florida Gators two-time national champions basketball team and Chipola
alumnus Cliff Ellis, head coach at Coastal Carolina.
In
February of 2008, more than 100 of Johnson’s players, cheerleaders and friends
attended a reunion to recognize him for his contributions to their lives. On
Jan. 17, 2009 several of these players presented a check for $50,000 to Chipola
for the purpose of permanently endowing a scholarship in honor of Coach Johnson.

CHIPOLA BRAIN BOWL
TEAMS QUALIFY FOR STATE TOURNEY
MARIANNA—Both Chipola College Brain Bowl teams will play for the state title in
the FCCAA State Championships at Brevard Community College March 26-28 in Cocoa.
Chipola Gold was undefeated through the round robin portion of the Panhandle
regional, but lost a close final to North Florida, giving Chipola a second place
finish.
Chipola Blue finished third in the region, and earned
one of two wild-card spots based on their 311.43 points per game average. This
year marks the first time that two Chipola teams have qualified for state.
Chipola is the defending FCCAA state champion.
A total of 10 teams from four regions across the state qualified for the
upcoming state tournament: Panhandle—North Florida (Champs) and Chipola-Gold
(Runner-up); East Central—FCCJ (Champs) and Central Florida (Runner-up); West
Central—Pasco-Hernando (Champs) and Valencia Red (Runner-up); Southern—Broward
Blue (Champs) and Broward White (Runner-up); and Wild Card teams—Chipola Blue
and Brevard.
Chipola Gold team members are: Jordan Belser, Anthony Garrett, Brad Wells, and
Ryan Wells.
Chipola Blue team members are: Nathan Hooppell, Ethan Hewett, Drew Padgett, Cody
Pickens, and Anthony Berkeley.
Stan Young and Dr. Robert Dunkle coach the Chipola Brain Bowl teams.
Both Chipola teams also have qualified for the NAQT (National Academic Quiz
Tournament) Intercollegiate Championship set for Feb. 27-28 in Orlando. Chipola
finished second in the 2008 National Tournament.

MARIANNA—Some 100 students from 13 area high schools
competed in writing, reading, speech, oral interpretation, literature,
humanities, grammar, and foreign language contests at Chipola College on Feb.
13.
The occasion was the Nineteenth Annual Throssell Literature/Language Festival
hosted by Chipola’s Letters Department. The purpose of the festival is to
recognize and encourage academic excellence.
Prizes were awarded to first, second and
third places, as well as two honorable mentions, in each category.
The winner of the President’s Reading Contest received a special medallion as
well as a cash award.

CHIPOLA HOOPS SQUADS
MAKE STATE TOURNAMENT
MARIANNA—Both
Chipola squads have earned spots in the State JUCO Basketball Tournament set for
March 4-7 on the Chipola campus.
The Indians captured their sixth straight Panhandle Conference title and
improved to 11-0 in league play with a 91-73 win over Pensacola on Feb. 17.
Jeremy Jacob led Chipola with 19 points and 4 rebounds. Gary Flowers had 15
points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Malcolm Armstead had 13 points and 3 rebounds.
Justin Brownlee scored 10 points and pulled in 7 rebounds.
The Indians scored an 83-82 overtime win over Northwest State on Feb. 14.
Flowers led Chipola with 31 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, and 4
steals. Torye Pelham added 14 points and 3 rebounds. Armstead had 11
points and 4 assists. Jon Kreft had 10 points and 6 boards. The Indians
scored an 89-56 victory over TCC on Feb. 7.
The Indians close out the regular season at Gulf
Coast Feb. 21 with a chance to set a Panhandle record for winning all conference
games. Chipola is 27-1 overall, and with 26 straight wins, has broken the
college’s old win-streak record of 23.
Chipola (11-0) will defend the state title beginning March 5 in the state
tournament. Gulf Coast (7-4) is in second in the league and will make their
first state tournament appearance in several years. Other conference records
are: NWF (5-7), TCC (3-8) and PJC (2-9).
The Lady Indians face Gulf Coast, Saturday, Feb. 21, for the conference title.
Both teams are knotted at 9-2. Both Chipola and Gulf Coast have earned
spots in the tournament. Three Panhandle teams will play in the
state tournament this year. Other conference records, are: NWF (6-6), PJC (4-7)
and TCC (0-11).
Chipola scored a 73-59 win over Pensacola on Feb. 17. Latoya Williams led
Chipola with 18 points and 5 rebounds. Georgian Williams had 13 points, 5
rebounds and 3 assists. Lenita Sanford scored 12 points and pulled in 8
rebounds. The Lady Indians scored a 65-58 win over Northwest State on Feb. 14.
Williams led Chipola with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Carolyn Mills added

20 points and 8 rebounds. Sequoyah Griffin had 11 points and 7 rebounds.

MARIANNA—The Chipola Indians will host the Fibercare Baseball Classic, Feb.
20-21, at the Chipola stadium.
The Indians play Alabama Southern at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, and Middle
Georgia at 1:30 p.m. Middle Georgia and Alabama Southern play at 4 p.m. Friday.
Action continues Saturday, Feb. 21, with Chipola and Alabama Southern at 11
a.m., Alabama Southern and Middle Georgia at 1:30 p.m., and Chipola and Middle
Georgia at 4 p.m.
The Indians continue their homestand with a game against Grand Rapids, Friday,

arriving in Marianna Tuesday for the Florida Junior College Men's and Women’s
State Basketball Tournament set for March 4-7 in Chipola’s Milton H. Johnson
Health Center.
Some 400 basketball players along with coaches, cheerleaders and fans will fill
nearly 200 hotel rooms during the tourney. Teams will begin practice Tuesday in
the Johnson Center and in local high school gyms. Each team is assigned a local
host family to help with any need that may arise during the tournament.
Numerous Division I College coaches and recruiters also are expected to scout
the talent in the competition. Tournament officials estimate that more than
$250,000 will flow into the area during the tournament from food, lodging,
recreation and incidental expenses.
The women’s tournament tips off
Wednesday, March 4, at 1 p.m. (CST) as Central Florida takes on Hillsborough.
At 3 p.m., Gulf Coast takes on Miami Dade. Chipola plays Santa Fe at 6 p.m.
Indian River and Northwest Florida meet in the 8 p.m. nightcap on Wednesday.
Men’s action begins Thursday,
March 5, at 1 p.m. as Polk takes on Santa Fe. At 3 p.m., Gulf Coast meets

MARIANNA—Ten Chipola basketball players have
earned All-Panhandle Conference honors for the 2008-09 regular season. Chipola
also boasts the men’s coach of the year and men’s and women’s players of the
year.
Chipola’s Casey Mitchell is the Panhandle Men’s Player of the Year.
He is the state’s third leading scorer averaging more than 21 points per game.
Mitchell broke the NJCAA record for most
consecutive free throws in a community college basketball game when he made 25
straight in Chipola’s overtime win over Tallahassee on Jan. 24.
Mitchell joins
five other Chipola players on the First Team All-Conference list: Gary Flowers,
Justin Brownlee, Torye Pelham, Malcolm Armstead and Jeremy Jacob.
One Indian was named Second Team All-Conference: Jon Kreft. Chipola’s
Honorable Mention Selections are: Josh Sain, Darius Stowers and Darrell
Williams.

CHIPOLA BASEBALL AT HOME THIS WEEK
MARIANNA—The Chipola Indians baseball team hosts a spate of games this week
beginning with Grand Rapids, Friday, Feb. 27, at 3 p.m. The Indians host two
games Saturday, Feb. 28, St. John’s River at noon and Grand Rapids at 6 p.m.
Chipola plays Grand Rapids again Sunday, March 1, at noon. The Indians host
Wallace-Dothan at 5 p.m., Tuesday, March 3.
Chipola is (9-7) as of Feb. 23 is ranked fifth in the FCCAA state poll. The
Indians are the defending conference and state champions. Miami-Dade is first in
the poll. PJC is second and Gulf Coast is fourth.
Chipola’s Austin Wright is this week’s FCCAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week.
Wright, a freshman from Hoffman Estates, Ill., made the most of his only
appearance on the mound last week. On Feb. 21 against NJCAA No. 26 Middle
Georgia, the southpaw tossed an impressive seven-inning no-hitter in the
Indians’ 6-0 win. Wright only walked three batters and struck out 11 in the
complete-game effort.

over Aiken Tech on Feb. 22. Rebekah Lewis picked up the win for Chipola in five
innings. Kara Gordon was three for three with three homeruns and 8 RBI’s.
Chipola also scored a big 9-1 win over Truett-McConnell on Feb. 22. Alison
Kirkland earned the win for Chipola. Amanda Vickers was 2-3 in the game.
The Lady Indians host Darton College, Tuesday, March 3, in a 3 p.m.
doubleheader. Chipola hosts Grand Rapids in a doubleheader, Thursday, March 5,
at 2 p.m.
The Lady Indians travel to Louisiana for games on March 6-7 before returning

MARIANNA—The top 16 community college basketball teams in Florida will begin
arriving in Marianna Tuesday for the Florida Junior College Men's and Women’s
State Basketball Tournament set for March 4-7 in Chipola’s Milton H. Johnson
Health Center.
Some 400 basketball players along with coaches, cheerleaders and fans will fill
nearly 200 hotel rooms during the tourney. Teams will begin practice Tuesday in
the Johnson Center and in local high school gyms. Each team is assigned a local
host family to help with any need that may arise during the tournament.
Numerous Division I College coaches and recruiters also are expected to scout
the talent in the competition. Tournament officials estimate that more than
$250,000 will flow into the area during the tournament from food, lodging,
recreation and incidental expenses.
The women’s tournament tips off
Wednesday, March 4, at 1 p.m. (CST) as Central Florida takes on Hillsborough.
At 3 p.m., Gulf Coast takes on Miami Dade. Chipola plays Santa Fe at 6 p.m.
Indian River and Northwest Florida meet in the 8 p.m. nightcap on Wednesday.
Men’s action begins Thursday,
March 5, at 1 p.m. as Polk takes on Santa Fe. At 3 p.m., Gulf Coast meets
Miami-Dade. Chipola plays Hillsborough at 6:00 p.m. Central Florida and Broward
play in the 8 p.m. nightcap on Thursday.
Men’s and women’s semi-finals are set for Friday, March 6, with women’s games at
1 and 6 p.m. and men’s contests at 3 and 8 p.m. The State Championship title
games are set for Saturday, March 7, with the women at 5 p.m., and the men at
7:30 p.m. Champions advance to the NJCAA National Tournaments, in Hutchinson,
KS, and Salina, KS.
The Jackson County Tourist
Development Council awarded a $10,000 grant to help promote and operate the
tournament. Waste Management is official host sponsor for the event. Other
sponsors include: the Florida Lottery, Florida Credit Union League, Community
South Credit Union, Focus Credit Union, Jackson County Teachers Credit Union and
Tyndall Federal Credit Union.
Tournament passes—$25 for adults and $15 for students—will get fans into all 14
exciting tournament games. Single session tickets—two games—are $10 each.
