Chipola College will hold
two Press Conferences, Wednesday, Feb. 2, at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.
At 10 a.m., Rep. Marti
Coley, college officials, and representatives from the Chipola Workforce Board,
will unveil the college’s new Simulation Modeling Technician (SMT) program.
The certification program is designed to provide students with the technical
skills needed to produce three-dimensional content for use in business,
industry, education, and government applications. Program instructor Matt White
will demonstrate 3-D models at the meeting. Program coordinator Christen Bennett
will provide registration information.
The 10 a.m. Press Conference
will be held in the Continuing Education Center on College Street near the gym
and baseball complex.
At 11 a.m., members of the
Chipola Appreciation Club and coaches will meet to kick off the ticket sales
drive for the State Community College Basketball Tournament. Chipola will host
the tournament, March 2-5. Officials will discuss the economic impact of the
tournament. The 11 a.m. Press Conference will be held in the Appreciation Club
Hospitality Room of the Milton H. Johnson Health Center.

MARIANNA—More than 2,000 visitors are expected to converge on Marianna for the
Florida Junior College Men's and Women’s State Basketball Tournament set for
March 2-5 at Chipola College. Advance tickets are now on sale for the
four-day event.
Some 400 basketball players from 16 teams, along with coaches, cheerleaders and
fans will fill nearly 200 hotel rooms during the tourney. Numerous Division I
College coaches and recruiters also are expected to scout the talent in the
competition. Tournament officials estimate that more than $250,000 will flow
into the area during the tournament from food, lodging, recreation and
incidental expenses.
Tournament administrator Ronnie Myers, a former Chipola player, said, “The
tournament is a huge undertaking which requires many volunteers and tremendous
financial support. We could not host this event without the generous support of
our fans, sponsors and advertisers.”
The Jackson County Tourist Development Council awarded a $10,000 grant to the
Chipola Appreciation Club to help promote and operate the tournament.
Waste Management is official host sponsor for the event. Other sponsors include:
the Florida Lottery and the Florida Credit Union League.

MARIANNA—Chipola College has entered a Brave New World with the announcement of
the Simulation Modeling Technician Certificate Program.

The Chipola Regional Workforce Development Board funded the startup costs of the
program with an initial contribution of $135,000. Richard Williams, Director of
the Workforce Development Board was on hand at the meeting.
Courtney Sawyer, the very first student to enroll in the program also attended
the press conference.
Students in the program will develop the technical skills necessary to produce
three-dimensional content to be used in business, industry, education, state and
federal government as well as the military.
The software that will be taught in this program includes Photoshop, 3D Studio
Max, ArcGIS, Java Script, AutoCAD and Unity gaming software.
Prospective students must have proficiency in computer applications in order to
successfully complete the course.
The first course begins April 11 and runs through Aug. 4. Registration deadline
is April 4. Classes are scheduled for Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings
from 5 to 10 p.m. Cost of the program is $1,500 plus the cost of textbooks. Due
to the length and the nature of the program, traditional Financial Aid is not
available. The course is limited to the first 12 students.

MARIANNA—Chipola College will celebrate Homecoming 2011 from Feb. 9 through 19.
The Indians will host Tallahassee Community College on Saturday, Feb. 19
This year’s homecoming theme is “Indians on Fire.”
Candidates for Mr.
Chipola and Homecoming Queen will be introduced at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 9 in
the Cafeteria. Voting for candidates will take place on the Feb. 9-10. The
top two freshmen vote winners (women and men) and the top three sophomore or
upper classman vote winners will be named to the Homecoming Court. The sophomore
or upper classman winners will be crowned Homecoming Queen and Mr. Chipola.
Later on Wednesday,
Feb. 9, a Retirees Luncheon honoring all retired Chipola faculty and staff is
set for 11:30 a.m. in the Faculty Dining Room of the Cafeteria. The lunch is
free to retirees and their guests. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP to

SGA will sponsor
a Building Decoration Contest among the campus organizations to be judged at 1
p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 15. Buildings must be decorated on Monday, Feb. 14. Campus

The Homecoming Talent show is Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 10:05 a.m. in the Arts
Center. The contest is open to any campus group or individual currently

FEB. 18 DANCE TO
BENEFIT CHIPOLA HONORS PROGRAM
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Honors Dance is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 18 in
the Art Center.
The $10-a-ticket dance is the main fundraiser for the Honors program which
recruits students from its five-county district. The Ivey Brothers have
again volunteered their talent and time for the event.
The Honors program recruits the top high school students from Chipola’s
five-county district. Students must have a 3.5 GPA and a minimum ACT of
23. Honors adviser Bonnie Smith, says, “The Honors program represents the
brightest and most involved students from our local high schools. Many
will return to become leaders in their own communities.” The students are
not provided scholarships to attend Chipola as part of the benefits of
completing the Honors Program, but most have earned academic scholarships and
are required to pay for the one-hour honors seminar each semester.
Honors students work one-on-one with a faculty member to complete a research
project each semester. The projects are designed with input from the
student and the instructor. Projects range from chemistry experiments that
determine an unknown substance to a differential calculus project in knot
theory. At the end of each semester, students present their findings in a
research paper and through a multimedia presentation to their peers.
The Honors Program now offers opportunities for travel with the addition of the
field trips. Smith says, “Since Chipola is viewed as the cultural and
academic hub of a large rural district, this seems an appropriate way to invest
in the lives of the College's most promising students. These field trips allow
our Honor students more access to the arts and a chance to travel to places they
have only read about.”
Some examples of past trips include travel to the Exploreum in Mobile to view
the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit; a trip to Jamestown, Virginia, to view the
excavation of the original colonial site; and another to New York to visit
museums and attend a Broadway play. Honors students also have had the
opportunity to earn college credit while they travel abroad.
The Honors Program also includes a lecture series featuring experts in their
field. Guest speakers, student seminars, and community debates are part of
this effort. The primary goal of the lecture series is to provide an
appealing vehicle for interdisciplinary learning, skill-building and career
development. Past lectures have included discussions on West Nile virus
and other infectious diseases, religion and the war in Iraq, the role of
advanced mathematics in biology, and a lecture on genetics and stem cell
research. Many of the lectures are open to all Chipola students,
faculty and to the public.
Community service is an integral component of the Honors program. Students
lead fund-raising efforts with local schools for many good causes. Honors raised
$5,000 for the Tsunami victims in Asia with funds distributed through United
Way. Other service activities have included working with Habitat for
Humanity, volunteering with the Red Cross after hurricanes, assisting the WINGS
program at local middle schools and providing reading assistance to at risk
kids. The group has worked with local schools to fight malaria and to help
with the Haiti Relief Effort.
Many of the past activities have been funded in part by the college and the
Chipola Foundation. Due to the expansion of the program and increases in
travel costs, the program is looking to the community for additional support.
Donations may be made to Honors endowment through the Chipola Foundation. The
endowment provides some of the funding for the cost of the seminars, travel and
speaker fees, as well as support materials for student research and
presentations.

CHIPOLA SCHOLARSHIPS IN THE ARTS
MARIANNA—Auditions dates have been set for Music, Art, and Theatre scholarships
to Chipola College for the 2011-12 school year. Music Scholarship auditions are
Feb. 24, March 17 April 21, and May 26. Theatre Scholarship auditions are
Feb. 24, March 17 and April 21. The Visual Art application and portfolio
deadline is April 21.
The scholarships are available to
high school graduates with acceptable academic records and aptitude in music,
theatre, and art. Applicants who plan to pursue studies as music, theatre or art
majors are eligible to apply for scholarships. Music or theatre students
unable to meet one of the scheduled dates are asked to contact Joan Stadsklev,
Director of Fine and Performing Arts, to arrange an alternative audition date.
Scholarships in various amounts,
up to full tuition and fees, are awarded on the basis of talent and academic
record. Students with financial need may seek additional assistance

LITERATURE/LANGUAGE FESTIVAL SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will host
the twenty-first annual Throssell Literature/Language Festival on Friday, Feb.
11.
Currently enrolled juniors or
seniors from high schools in the Chipola District will compete in writing,
speech, oral interpretation, humanities, grammar/mechanics/usage, literature,
reading and Spanish competitions.
Festival coordinator Rachel West
says, “Recognition will be given to first, second, and third places and two
honorable mentions in each competition. A monetary award will be given to
the first place winner of the President’s Reading contest.”
The festival will begin at 8:15 a.m. and conclude with the awards ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Lunch, compliments of the college, will be provided to the contestants and their sponsors. Participants also will see a preview of the upcoming Chipola musical Little Shop of Horrors.

MARIANNA—Chipola hosts Pensacola, Monday, Feb. 14, in the Milton H. Johnson
Health Center. The women’s game tips off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men’s game
at 7:30 p.m.
The Indians suffered their first misfire of the conference season with a 68-63 loss to Northwest Florida on Feb. 1. Geron Johnson led Chipola with 21 points and 6 rebounds. Marcos Knight had 15 points and 9 rebounds. Elijah Pittman had 12 points and 5 rebounds. Keith Dewitt had 10 points and 8 rebounds. Chipola trailed 36-23 at the half, but rallied to take a three-point lead late in the final period.
Chipola’s men still have stronghold on first place in the conference at
(20-3, 6-1). The Indians now share the top spot in the
Men’s FCCAA State Poll with Palm Beach (22-2).
Tallahassee (18-7, 4-3) is fourth in the poll. Northwest (18-5, 3-4)
is tied for sixth with St. Pete. Pensacola (16-9, 4-4) is tenth.
The Indians scored 67-61 win over
Pensacola on Jan. 29. Pittman led Chipola with 16
points. Dewitt had 13 points and 9 rebounds.
Johnson had 12 points and 4 assists.
Chipola scored a big 78-57 win over Gulf Coast on Jan. 25.
Marcos Knight led Chipola with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Johnson had 17
points and 5 rebounds. Pittman scored 10 points and pulled down 6 rebounds.
The Indians beat Tallahassee 71-67 on Jan. 18. Chipola outlasted Northwest 56-55
on Jan. 15. The Indians bested Pensacola 76-67 on Jan. 11. Chipola
opened league play with a 68-64 win over Gulf Coast on Jan. 8.
The
Lady Indians slipped to 17-8 on the year 3-4 in
Panhandle conference play with a 58-56 loss to Northwest
Florida on Feb. 1. Jasmine Shaw led Chipola with 14 points. Jeniece
Johnson had 13 points and 14 rebounds. Brieona Warner had 7 points and 8
rebounds. The (3-4) Lady Indians are third in the Panhandle race. The top
two teams from the conference earn a spot in the state tournament.
The Lady Indians fell to top-ranked Pensacola 73-62 on Jan.
29. Shaw led Chipola with 18 points. Carleeda Green had 16.
Chipola scored a second win over
Gulf Coast this season with a 55-46 victory on Jan. 25. Shaw led Chipola with

Chipola beat Tallahassee 55-47 on Jan. 18. Shaw led Chipola with 15. Green

lost a close 73-66 game to top-ranked Pensacola on Jan. 11.
The Lady Indians opened league play with a 64-59 win over the Lady Commodores on

In the Feb. 1 FCCAA poll, Chipola (17-7, 3-4) is third.
Pensacola (25-0, 8-0) is first. Northwest Florida State (19-4, 4-3) is
second. Gulf Coast (13-8, 2-5) is fourth. Tallahassee (12-8, 1-6) is
eighth.
Both Chipola teams travel to Tallahassee, Feb. 5, and to Gulf Coast, Feb. 12,

PHI BETA LAMBDA EVENT
MARIANNA—Chipola College
recently hosted the regional competition for the Phi Beta Lambda business
organization.
Students from Chipola,
Florida State University and Taylor Technical Institute competed in 27
performance events and objective exams testing their business knowledge and
skills.

FBLA-PBL is the premier
student business association. The purpose of the group is to bring business and
education together in a positive working relationship through innovative
leadership and career development programs.
Chipola’s PBL group recently
hosted the high school FBLA – Future Business Leaders of America
competition. Ten high schools and 90 students competed in events, including
business case studies, job interviewing, public speaking, parliamentary
procedure, and computer skills. FBLA members and their families will
return to Chipola, Feb. 17, for an awards ceremony in the Arts Center.

SHOWALTER AND
BAUTISTA HEADLINE CHIPOLA BASEBALL EVENT
MARIANNA—Chipola College
officially retired the jerseys of Orioles manager Buck Showalter and Blue Jays
slugger Jose Bautista in a Feb. 5 ceremony at the college.
Dozens of former Chipola
baseball players also returned to their alma mater for a Homerun Derby and a Pro
Baseball Celebrity Dinner.
Showalter worked as an ESPN analyst on Baseball Tonight before taking over as
manager of the Orioles in July of 2010. Showalter has managed the Yankees,
Diamondbacks and Rangers. He grew up in
Century, FL, and played at Chipola in 1976. From there Buck moved on to
baseball Mississippi State where he was an All-American who
batted .459 in
1977. He was selected by the
New York Yankees in the fifth round of the draft, and spent seven seasons in
the Yankees’
minor league system.
Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays was Major League Baseball’s 2010 homerun
leader with 54. Bautista played at Chipola before being drafted by the Pirates
in 2000. The 29 year-old has also played for the Pirates, the Orioles and the
Royals. He won this year's Silver Slugger Award, the Hank Aaron Award and
finished fourth in voting for the American League MVP.

PENSACOLA MONDAY AND TALLAHASSEE SATURDAY
Chipola hosts Pensacola, Monday, Feb. 14, in the Milton H. Johnson Health
Center. The women’s game tips off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men’s game at
7:30 p.m.
Chipola beat Tallahassee 62-47 on Feb. 5. Chipola led 25-21at the
intermission, but the Indians caught fire in the second half, hitting 6-of-10
three-pointers and shooting 52 percent. A pair of Chipola players recorded
double-doubles – Marcos Knight (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Keith Dewitt (16
points, 13 rebounds). Two other players scored in double-figures – Shamarr
Bowden with 12 and Geron Johnson with 11.
The Indians suffered their first misfire of the conference season with a 68-63
loss to Northwest Florida on Feb. 1. Geron Johnson led Chipola with 21 points
and 6 rebounds. Marcos Knight had 15 points and 9 rebounds. Elijah Pittman
had 12 points and 5 rebounds. Keith Dewitt had 10 points and 8 rebounds.
Chipola trailed 36-23 at the half.
Chipola’s men still have stronghold on first place in the conference at (21-3,
7-1). The Indians are also first in the Feb. 8 Men’s FCCAA State Poll.
Northwest (19-5, 4-4) is third. Tallahassee (18-8, 4-4) is sixth in the
poll. Pensacola (16-9, 4-4) is seventh.
The Lady Indians improved to 18-8 on the year 4-4 in Panhandle conference play
with a 66-48 win over Tallahassee on Feb. 5. Jeniece Johnson led Chipola with 17
points and nine rebounds. Jasmine Shaw added 14 while Carleeda Green and Brieona
Warner scored ten points each.
The Lady Indians suffered a 58-56 loss to Northwest on Feb. 1. Shaw led Chipola
with 14. Johnson had 13 points and 14 rebounds. Brieona Warner had 7
points and 8 rebounds. The (3-4) Lady Indians are third in the Panhandle
race. The top two teams from the conference earn a spot in the state tournament.
The Lady Indians fell to top-ranked Pensacola 73-62 on Jan. 29. Chipola
scored a second win over Gulf Coast this season with a 55-46 victory on Jan. 25.
Shaw led Chipola with 18 points and 3 rebounds. Green had 12 points and 4
rebounds. Sara Djassi added 9 points and 3 rebounds.
In the Feb. 8 FCCAA poll, Chipola (18-8, 4-4) is third. Pensacola (25-0, 8-0) is
first. Northwest Florida State (20-4, 5-3) is second. Gulf Coast (13-9,
2-6) is fifth. Tallahassee (12-9, 1-7) is eighth.
Both Chipola teams travel to Gulf Coast, Feb. 12, before returning home to host
Pensacola, Feb. 14.

FIBERCARE CLASSIC
MARIANNA—Chipola College
baseball will host the Fibercare JUCO National Classic, Feb. 11-13, at the
college baseball complex.
Games begin Friday, Feb. 11, with Chipola taking on Walters State (TN) at 10 a.m. and Louisburg (NC) at 1 p.m. Games continue Saturday, Feb. 12, with Chipola facing San Jacinto (TX) at 10 a.m. The classic finishes up Sunday, Feb. 13, with Chipola and Middle Georgia at 1 p.m.
The Indians hit the road
next week for games at Darton, Feb. 15, and in Palatka, Feb. 18-19. Chipola
returns home Tuesday, Feb. 22, for a 4 p.m. game with Wallace-Dothan.
Chipola hosts a big
tournament, Feb. 24-26, with St. Johns River, Miami-Dade and LSU-Eunice coming
to play.

SMALL BUSINESS SEMINARS SET AT
CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer small business seminars in February and
March.

On Friday, Feb. 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., a Webinar on “Understanding
Balance Sheets” will be offered. Participants will discover where each line of a
balance sheet comes from and how to verify and compare them in this course
taught by a local Certified Public Accountant.
Also on Feb. 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., “Marketing Series, Part 2:
Marketing on the Internet and Using Social Media” will be offered. Participants
will discover the power of having a social media strategy. Business owners also
will learn to implement new marketing techniques, unlock the secrets of social
media and establish an online presence.
On Friday, March 11, a Webinar entitled, “Are You Missing Tax Deductions?” will
be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Participants will learn which tax
deduction areas are being missed due to lack of communication with the tax
preparer? Existing business owners will determine if a change of entity
can decrease their taxes.
Also on March 11, a seminar entitled, “Ultimate Business Plan,” will meet from
11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Participants will learn to create an impressive business
plan to ensure business success.

CHIPOLA COLLEGE OFFERING 3-D COURSE
MARIANNA—Chipola College is now accepting students for the new Simulation
Modeling Technician (3-D) Certificate program.
Students in the program will develop the technical skills necessary to produce
three-dimensional content to be used in business, industry, education, state and
federal government as well as the military.
The software that will be taught in this program includes Photoshop, 3D Studio
Max, ArcGIS, Java Script, AutoCAD and Unity gaming software.
Prospective students must have proficiency in computer applications in order to
successfully complete the course.
The first course begins April 11 a nd runs through Aug. 4. Registration deadline
is April 4. Classes are scheduled for Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings
from 5 to 10 p.m. Cost of the program is $1,500 plus the cost of textbooks. Due
to the length and the nature of the program, traditional Financial Aid is not
available. The course is limited to the first 12 students. Matt White, Chipola’s
Network Coordinator, will teach the course.

p.m. Sunday matinee. Some material in the show is best suited to adult
audiences.
Music in the Off-Broadway show was written and composed by the talented team of
Alan Menkene and Howard Ashman. The Menkene/Ashman duo also wrote tunes for the
Disney versions of “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Alladin.”
Menken is nominated for an Oscar for his work in the current Disney animated
hit, “Tangled.”
Chipola Theater director Charles Sirmon selected a cast of 30, including the
following roles: Meghan Gilliland as Ronnette, Deanna Harrison as Chiffon, Kayla
Todd as Crystal, Griffin Smith as Mushnik, Dianna Glaze as Audrey, Trey McKay as
Seymour, Chris Holloway as Orin, D.R. Forrester as Audrey II (manipulation),

“Little Shop of Horrors” centers on flower-shop employee Seymour who discovers
an exotic plant species at a flea market and brings it back to Mushnik’s Skid
Row Florist, where the mysterious plant draws in curiosity seekers and
customers. Mushnik is thrilled with the new business, but soon, Seymour learns
the plant has an unusual appetite that must be satisfied. The plant, named
“Audrey 2,” having developed a mind and a rhythm-and-blues singing voice of its
own, demands that Seymour fulfill its cravings, promising wealth and fame in
exchange.
The stage show was re-made as a popular film starring Steve Martin as the
sadistic dentist.

MARIANNA—Auditions dates have been set for Music, Art, and Theatre scholarships
to Chipola College for the 2011-12 school year.
Music Scholarship auditions are Feb. 24, March 17 April 21, and May 26.
Theatre Scholarship auditions are Feb. 24, March 17 and April 21. The Visual Art
application and portfolio deadline is April 21.
The scholarships are available to high school graduates with acceptable academic
records and aptitude in music, theatre, and art. Applicants who plan to pursue
studies as music, theatre or art majors are eligible to apply for scholarships.
Music or theatre students unable to meet one of the scheduled dates are asked to
contact Joan Stadsklev, Director of Fine and Performing Arts, to arrange an
alternative audition date.
Scholarships in various amounts, up to full tuition and fees, are awarded on the
basis of talent and academic record. Students with financial need may seek

FIREARMS COURSE
SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will hold an 8-hour
Firearms Familiarization course, Saturday, March 19, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at
the Chipola Annex Firing Range on the Blue Springs Highway.
Although this class can be used to meet requirements to obtain a concealed
weapon permit, those who simply want to learn to shoot or take a refresher
course are welcome.
Only .38 cal, 9mm, and .40 cal ammunition will be provided. College weapons will
be utilized for most of the course, but students will be allowed to shoot their
own weapons at some point. Personal weapons must be left in the vehicle until
requested by instructors.
Registration and payment of the $100 fee must be completed in advance. Class
size is limited. Use of a weapon and ammunition are included in the cost of the
course.

CHIPOLA MUSIC STUDENTS ATTEND
SYMPOSIUM
BOCA RATON—Chipola College music students recently attended the Florida
Community College Activities Association Winter Music Symposium hosted by
Florida Atlantic University’s Department of Music in Boca Raton.
Joseph Covington, a student of Chipola guitar teacher Adam Larison, won the
statewide Student Artist Competition in the guitar category. Kari McConkey
(trumpet) and Trey Holmes (trombone), students of Dr. Daniel Powell, and Steve
Ozbun (guitar), student of Adam Larison, also competed in the Student Artist
Competition.
Chipola students also rehearsed and performed in music ensembles made up of
members from several Florida colleges and universities. Wade Boan
(percussion) and Trey Holmes (trombone) performed in the Jazz Ensemble.
Joseph Covington and Steve Ozbun were first and second chair in the Classical
Guitar Ensemble. Kari McConkey (trumpet) performed with the Wind Ensemble,
and Adam Smith (percussion) performed in the Wind and Percussion Ensembles.

CHIPOLA INDIANS WIN CONFERENCE TITLE
The Chipola Indians clinched the Panhandle Conference Championship and spot in the state tournament with a 69-62 win over Pensacola on Feb. 14. Marcos Knight led Chipola with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Shamarr Bowden had 11 points.
The Indians are scheduled to host Tallahassee Feb. 19 for Homecoming and the
final game of the conference season.
Chipola suffered a 67-65 loss to Northwest Florida Feb. 16 in Niceville. Chipola led 29-27 at half, but gave up 40 points in the second half. Marcos Knight led Chipola with 16 points. Sam Grooms scored 11 points. Geron Johnson and Keith Dewitt scored 10 points apiece
The Indians scored a 73-59 win at Gulf Coast on Feb. 12. Bowden led with 20 points on six three-pointers. Elijah Pittman scored 17. Marcos Knight scored 11 points. Keith Dewitt had 10. Chipola is 23-3 overall and 9-1 in conference play.
Chipola’s men
(23-4, 9-2) are conference champs and
first in the Men’s FCCAA State Poll.
Palm Beach (25-4) is second. Central Florida is third. Northwest Florida
(21-6, 6-5) is fourth. Tallahassee (21-8, 7-4) is fifth in the poll.
Chipola scored a 62-47 win over Tallahassee on Feb. 5. A pair of Chipola
players recorded double-doubles – Marcos Knight (14 points, 11 rebounds) and
Keith Dewitt (16 points, 13 rebounds). Shamarr Bowden scored 12 and Geron
Johnson added 11.
The Lady Indians slipped to 4-7 in conference play with a
78-67 loss to Northwest on Feb. 16. Jasmine Shaw led Chipola with 33
points.
Chipola lost to top-ranked Pensacola 60-44 on Feb. 14. Brieona Warner led Chipola with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Sara Djassi scored 10.
Chipola suffered
their only loss of the season to Gulf Coast in an 82-64 game on Feb. 12.

Conference champion and ranked first in the FCCAA State Women’s Poll. Northwest
(22-5, 7-4) is second. Chipola (18-11, 4-7) is third and Gulf Coast is (14-11,
3-8) is sixth. TCC is (13-11, 2-9) is tenth.
The homecoming court will be presented during halftime of the men’s game this evening which begins at 7:30 p.m.

CHIPOLA BASEBALL AT HOME THIS WEEK
MARIANNA—Chipola College baseball will host Wallace-Dothan, Tuesday, Feb. 22,
for a 4 p.m. game.
The Indians host several teams in a Feb. 24-26 tournament with St. Johns River,
Miami-Dade and LSU-Eunice coming to play.
The Indians play St. Johns River, Thursday, Feb. 24, at 5 p.m. On Friday, Feb. 25, Chipola plays Miami-Dade at 10 a.m. and LSU-Eunice at 7 p.m. Chipola plays Miami-Dade, Saturday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m.
Chipola’s Johnny Cristi threw a no-hitter as the #9 Indians defeated #4 Walters
State (TN) by the final 6-0 in the 2011 Chipola / Fibercare JUCO National
Classic on Feb. 11. Cristi struck out seven batters and allowed only two walks
in the seven inning contest, as the Indians provided run support by plating six
runs on seven hits.
The Indians open Panhandle Conference play March 12 at Gulf Coast.

FORMER INDIAN, BAUTISTA, CLOSE TO $65 MILLION CONTRACT EXTENSION
The Toronto Blue Jays and third baseman Jose Bautista are
close to agreeing to a five-year contract extension worth close to $65 million,
a source told ESPNdeportes.com.
Bautista is a former Chipola College baseball player whose
Indians jersey was retired earlier this month.
The agreement, which would include financial support for
Bautista's charitable activities in Toronto and the Dominican Republic, is
missing some details including the player passing a physical.
If an agreement is reached, the Canadian franchise would
avoid salary arbitration with the 2010 major league home run leader.
Bautista, 30, requested a salary of $10.5 million for 2011,
while the club offered $7.6 million. He would be eligible for free agency after
next season if a multiyear deal isn't reached.
Bautista has a .244 career batting average with five teams in
his seven-year MLB career but is coming off a dream season in which he led the
majors with 54 homers and was selected to his first All-Star team.
In his third year with Blue Jays, Bautista hit .260 with 124
RBIs and 109 runs scored.
He was fourth in AL MVP voting and was the recipient of the
Hank Aaron Award, awarded to the most complete batter in each league.

MARIANNA—The top 16 community college basketball teams in Florida will begin
arriving in Marianna Tuesday for the Florida Junior College Men's and Women’s
State Basketball Tournament set for March 2-5 in Chipola College’s Milton H.
Johnson Health Center.
Some 400 basketball players along with coaches, cheerleaders and fans will fill
nearly 200 hotel rooms during the tourney. Teams will begin practice Tuesday in
the Johnson Center and in local high school gyms. Each team is assigned a local
host family to help with any need that may arise during the tournament.
Numerous Division I College
coaches and recruiters also are expected to scout the talent in the competition.
Tournament officials estimate that more than $250,000 will flow into the area
during the tournament from food, lodging, recreation and incidental expenses.
Women’s action begins Wednesday,
March 2, at 1 p.m., as Indian River takes on Central Florida. At 3 p.m.,
Pensacola meets Daytona. The 6 p.m. game features Northwest and St. Petersburg.
Santa Fe and Miami Dade play in the 8 p.m. nightcap on Wednesday.
The men’s tournament tips off Thursday,
March 3, at 1 p.m. as Central Florida takes on Brevard. At 3 p.m.,
Tallahassee takes on Polk. Chipola faces St. Petersburg in the 6 p.m. game.
Palm Beach and Daytona meet in the 8 p.m. nightcap on Thursday.
Men’s and women’s semi-finals are set for Friday, March 4, with women’s games at
1 and 6 p.m. and men’s contests at 3 and 8 p.m. The State Championship title
games are set for Saturday, March 5, with the women at 5 p.m., and the men at
7:30 p.m.
Waste Management is official host sponsor for the event. The Jackson County
Tourist Development Council awarded a grant to help promote the tournament.
The Florida Lottery is also a major sponsor of the event.
Tournament passes—$25 for
adults and $15 for students—will get fans into all 14 exciting tournament games.

CHIPOLA HOSTS FBLA
DISTRICT AWARDS CEREMONY
MARIANNA—Chipola College hosted the 2011 Future Business Leaders of America
(FBLA) District II Awards ceremony, Feb. 17, in the college Arts Center.
Chipola executive vice
president Dr. Sarah Clemmons welcomed the group of middle and high school
students from 11 area schools along with their advisers and parents. District 2
FBLA advisers are Melissa Baxley and Patricia Bearden.
The Chipola Theatre department entertained the crowd with scenes and songs from
the upcoming musical “Little Shop of Horrors.” Following the
entertainment, district officer candidates presented campaign speeches and
elections were held.
Awards were then presented in over 50 competitive and
skills events from the areas of technology, public speaking, business, finance
and management. First place winners in the
various events qualify to compete in the state FBLA Leadership Conference in
Orlando in April.
FBLA-PBL is an organization dedicated to helping business students prepare for
their future careers. Middle and high school FBLA students build
portfolios of documented accomplishments to complement academic experience and
also participate in business and leadership programs to enhance leadership
skills.

MARIANNA—Tickets are now on sale for the Chipola College production of the
Off-Broadway musical, "Little Shop of Horrors."
The show opens a five-day run, March 9, with shows nightly at 7 p.m. and a 2
p.m. Sunday matinee. Some material in the show is best suited to adult
audiences.
Music in the Off-Broadway show was written and composed by the talented team of
Alan Menkene and Howard Ashman. The Menkene/Ashman duo also wrote tunes for the
Disney versions of “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Alladin.”
Menken is nominated for an Oscar for his work in the current Disney animated
hit, “Tangled.”
Chipola Theater director Charles Sirmon selected a cast of 30, including the
following roles: Meghan Gilliland as Ronnette, Deanna Harrison as Chiffon, Kayla
Todd as Crystal, Griffin Smith as Mushnik, Dianna Glaze as Audrey, Trey McKay as

“Little Shop of Horrors” centers on flower-shop employee Seymour who discovers
an exotic plant species at a flea market and brings it back to Mushnik’s Skid
Row Florist, where the mysterious plant draws in curiosity seekers and
customers. Mushnik is thrilled with the new business, but soon, Seymour learns
the plant has an unusual appetite that must be satisfied. The plant, named
“Audrey 2,” having developed a mind and a rhythm-and-blues singing voice of its
own, demands that Seymour fulfill its cravings, promising wealth and fame in
exchange.
The stage show was re-made as a popular film starring Steve Martin as the
sadistic dentist.

MARIANNA—Some 130 students from 13 area high
schools competed in writing, reading, speech, oral
interpretation, literature, humanities, grammar, and spanish contests at Chipola
College on Feb. 11.
The occasion was the Twenty-first Annual Throssell Literature/Language Festival
hosted by Chipola’s Letters Department. The purpose of the festival is to
recognize and encourage academic excellence.
Prizes were awarded to first, second and third places, as well as two honorable mentions, in each category. The winner of the President’s Reading Contest received a special medallion as well as a cash award.

UF AG ED PROGRAM AT CHIPOLA ON
HOLD
MARIANNA—Dr. Mark Rieger, interim dean of the College of Agricultural and Life
Sciences at the University of Florida, has informed Chipola College officials
that the Agricultural Education program proposed for the Chipola campus is only
in the discussion phase and may require years to implement, if it is to be
implemented at all.
Citing pending budgetary concerns faced by UF, Dr. Rieger, said, “More work
needs to be done and a far more favorable environment for new program
development needs to arise.” He cited the need for the program to be fully
self-funded and a lack of good data on student interest as the main reasons for
the shift in priority for the program.
Chipola officials have championed the program based on an initial interest
survey indicating “a very positive response for both program interest and
perceived need for the program in this region,” according to Bud Riviere,
Workforce Development dean at Chipola. “We regret the change in direction
regarding the program,” Riviere said.

MARIANNA—Six Chipola basketball players have
earned All-Panhandle Conference honors for the 2010-11 regular season. Chipola
also boasts the men’s coach of the year.
Four Chipola players were
named on the First Team All-Conference list: Marcos Knight, Keith Dewitt, Sam
Grooms and Geron Johnson.
Two Indians were named Second Team All-Conference: Shamar Bowden and Elijah
Pittman.
Chipola men’s coach Jake Headrick was named Panhandle Conference Coach of the
Year after his Indians captured the Conference Championship. The Indians will
defend their state title in a first round tournament game with St. Petersburg,
Thursday, March 3, at 6 p.m., in the Milton H. Johnson Health Center.

CHIPOLA’S RICH IS
FCCAA SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Chipola sophomore Samantha Rich of Wewahitchka, FL, is this week’s FCCAA
Softball Player of the Week. Rich—a freshman outfielder—batted .786
(11-for-14) with two home runs and five RBI’s in five games at the Aiken Tech
Tournament, Feb. 18-19.
She hit safely in all five games and collected at least two hits in each outing.
On day one, she was 6-for-8, which included a home run and three RBI’s against
Florence-Darlington Tech. On day two, she was 5-for-6 and scored three runs in
wins over Middle Georgia and Walters State.
The Lady Indian Softball Team won the Aiken (SC) Tech Classic Fastpitch
Tournament, Feb. 18-19. Chipola won the first three games by the mercy
rule, ahead by 8 runs after 5 innings. On the Championship day, Chipola
beat Middle Georgia 8-0, then defeated Walters State in the Championship Game.
Walters State is a national contender and that made the championship game a
shoot out between former National Champions.
