CHIPOLA MUSIC STUDENTS ATTEND WINTER SYMPOSIUM
MARIANNA—Chipola College music majors recently attended the Florida
College System Activities Association (FCSAA) winter symposium at Florida
Atlantic University in Boca Raton.
Chipola students who attended the conference were: Garrett Bolund, Trey
Holmes, Daniel Kern, Cecil Mathis, Lizzy Mathis, Ryan Pilcher and Joseph Raley.
Daniel Kern, pianist, received an honorable mention at the Student
Artists Competition with participants throughout the state of Florida.
Voice major Lizzy Mathis was also competitively chosen as a feature soloist in
the 115 member chorus during their final performance.
The Chipola students who attended interacted with students from state
colleges throughout Florida and had the opportunity to work directly with the
faculty at Florida Atlantic University.
Dr. Daniel Powell, Chipola’s Associate Dean of Fine and Performing Arts,
says, “Our students’ showing at the symposium is a testament to the fine music
and arts programs we offer at Chipola.”

CHIPOLA COLLEGE OFFERS FREE TAX PREPARATION
MARIANNA—Chipola College
business professor Lee Shook and his student volunteers are providing free tax
preparation and free electronic filing.
The free service—for individual tax returns only—is available from 9 a.m.
to 2:30 p.m., on Wednesdays beginning Jan. 25 in room M-201. Reservations
or appointment times are requested. Those who drop in may have a longer wait.
Preparation time is usually around 30 minutes.
Professor Shook says, “If it is a very complicated return, we ask that
you continue to use your paid professional, but if it is a fairly simple return
we can help. We will do Schedule A, itemized deductions.”
For faster refunds, taxpayers are asked to bring a personal check which
has routing information needed for electronic refunds.

LITERATURE/LANGUAGE FESTIVAL SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will host the Twenty-second Annual Throssell
Literature/Language Festival on Friday, Feb. 17.
Currently enrolled juniors or seniors from high schools in the Chipola
District will compete in writing, speech, oral interpretation, humanities,
grammar/mechanics/usage, literature, reading and Spanish competitions.
Festival coordinator Rachel West says, “Recognition will be given to first,
second, and third places and two honorable mentions in each competition. A
monetary award will be given to the first place winner of the President’s
Reading contest.”
The festival will begin at 8:15 a.m. and conclude with the awards
ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Lunch, compliments of the college, will be provided to
the contestants and their sponsors. Participants also will see a preview of the
upcoming Chipola musical Godspell.
Dr. Sarah Clemmons says, “We are looking forward to hosting our
twenty-second festival. It is always a pleasure to have area high school
students on our campus for a day of academic competition.”

CHIPOLA BLACK HISTORY PROGRAM SET FOR FEB. 24
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Black
Student Union and the Association of United Professionals will host a Black
History Month Program, Friday, Feb. 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in the Chipola
Arts Center. Dinner will be served.
Dr. Rufus Wood of Panama City is the guest
speaker. A prominent local civil rights leader and pastor Wood was honored in
2010 by the Glenwood Community Center for his 25 years of dedication in bringing
social justice to the community. Wood has served as pastor of the Love Center
Missionary Baptist Church, Moderator of the Progressive Missionary Baptist
District Association of West Florida, and President of the Bay County branch of
the NAACP.
The public is invited to enjoy the free festivities and dinner, while
learning more about Black History.

MARKETING SEMINAR SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer a seminar entitled, “Marketing
Series, Part 1: Introduction to 21st Century Marketing,” Friday, Feb.
10.
Participants will learn to choose the best methods for marketing a
business, target a market audience, create a free web site quickly and easily,
discover which social media avenues are the best, and learn to optimize internet
presence.
The seminar will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Room M-108 of the
Chipola Business and Technology building.

FIREARMS COURSE SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will hold
an 8-hour Firearms (Semi-Automatic) Familiarization course, Saturday, Feb. 25,
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Reddoch Firing Range on the Blue Springs Highway.
The course will involve classroom time, coupled with extensive gun
handling and live fire shooting. Successful completion of
the course may be used in applying for a Concealed Weapons Permit.
Application packets for the permit will be furnished upon request.
Registration and payment of the $100 fee must be completed in advance. A
24-hour cancellation notice is required for a refund. Class size is limited.
Students must be at least 18 years of age. Use of a weapon and ammunition are
included in the cost of the course. No vending machines are available at the
range so participants are asked to bring lunch.

CHIPOLA HOSTS PENSACOLA IN LEAGUE MATCHUPS
MARIANNA— Chipola hosts Pensacola in a pair of games Saturday, Feb. 4, in
the Milton H. Johnson Health Center. The women’s game tips off at 5:30 p.m.,
followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.
The Lady Indians improved to 3-3 in
league play and 16-7 overall with a big 57-56 win over Northwest Florida State
on Jan. 28. Jena Brazzle led Chipola with 15. Jeleah Sidney scored 13.
Jenice Johnson had 12 points and 12 rebounds. The Lady Indians were up 33-18 at
the half. Northwest rallied in the second half, but Chipola never relinquished
the lead. Chipola was five of 15 from the three point line.
Chipola beat Tallahassee 56-50 on Jan. 24 on the heels of a 72-63 loss to
Gulf Coast on Jan. 21. Johnson led Chipola with 17 points and seven rebounds.
Sara Djassi had 15 points.
As of Feb. 2, the women’s conference standings are: Pensacola (5-1), Gulf
Coast (5-2), Chipola (3-3), Northwest (3-4) and Tallahassee (0-6). In the
Jan. 31 FCSAA women’s poll, Pensacola is first. Gulf Coast is second. Northwest
is third. Chipola is fifth and Tallahassee is ninth.
The top three women’s teams in the Panhandle Conference earn a berth to
the state tournament, March 7-10, at Chipola.
The Indians fell to 2-4 in
conference play and 18-5 overall with a 63-55 loss to Northwest Florida State on
Jan. 28. Chipola led at the half shooting 65 percent from the floor, but
shot only 25 percent in the second half. Chipola was led by Aishon White with 11
points. Mohammad Lee had 9 points. Trantell Knight had 8, and Marianna
freshman Kruize Pinkins had 7.
Chipola beat Tallahassee 58-43 for the second time this season on Jan.
24.
The Indians are still in contention for a state tournament berth with one
round left in league play. The top two men’s teams in the Panhandle Conference
earn a berth to the state tournament, March 7-10, at Chipola.
Head coach Headrick says, “The Pensacola game is huge. And then we go to
Gulf Coast. The bottom line is we’ve got to win these next two to put us in
decent shape going into the last round. If we do that, we’re going to have a
chance to make the state tournament.”
The Indians have been without the services of leading scorer Joseph
Uchebo who has been out with a knee
injury, but may return for the Pensacola game.
As of Feb. 2, the Panhandle Conference men’s standings are: Northwest
(6-1), Pensacola (4-2), Gulf Coast (3-4), Chipola (2-4) and Tallahassee (1-5).
In the Jan. 31 FCSAA poll, Chipola’s men were ranked ninth. Northwest is
first. Pensacola is second. Gulf Coast is eighth.

BAUTISTA TO HEADLINE CHIPOLA BASEBALL ALUMNI
EVENT
MARIANNA—Major League Baseball’s back-to-back Homerun leader Jose
Bautista will return to his alma mater on Feb. 11 for Chipola College’s Baseball
Alumni event.
Chipola coach Jeff Johnson says, “It’s great to have Jose and so many
other great players to come back for this event. A lot of them have gone on to
be successful in baseball and in other careers. They all have a lot of
pride in Chipola and it means a lot for them to come in here and help us raise a
little money for our program.”
The Alumni Baseball weekend events begin Friday, Feb. 10, with a game
between Chipola and Walters State at 11 a.m. Chipola plays San Jacinto at 2 p.m.
A Golf Outing for Chipola Baseball Alumni and friends tees off at 2 p.m. at
Indian Springs Golf Course. An Alumni Social will be held at Beef
O’Brady’s from 6:30 p.m. to midnight.
Saturday, Feb. 11, events begin at 11 a.m. with Chipola vs. Walters
State. An Alumni Home Run Derby begins at 1 p.m. Fans will have a chance to meet
the players and get autographs. A $100 a plate Pro Baseball Dinner and Auction
is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Trammell Camp in Blountstown.

CHIPOLA HOMECOMING 2012 BEGINS FEB.

MARIANNA—Chipola College will celebrate Homecoming 2012 from Feb. 15-25
with the Indians hosting Gulf Coast for the big Homecoming games on Saturday,
Feb. 25. This year’s homecoming theme is “Fear the Spear.”
Candidates for Mr. Chipola and Homecoming Queen will be introduced at 10
a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 15, in the Cafeteria. Voting for candidates will
take place on the Feb. 15-16. The top two freshmen vote winners (women and men)
and the top three sophomores or upper classmen vote winners will be named to the
Homecoming Court. The sophomore or upper classmen winners will be crowned
Homecoming Queen and Mr. Chipola at the Homecoming game on Feb. 25.
SGA will sponsor a Building Decoration Contest among the campus
organizations to be judged at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 21. Buildings must be
decorated on Monday, Feb. 20. Campus groups should contact Nancy Johnson about
the building their club would like to decorate.
The Homecoming Talent show is Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 10:05 a.m. in the
Arts Center. The contest is open to any campus group or individual
currently enrolled at Chipola. Cash prizes will be awarded to: Best
Overall - 1st, 2nd and 3rd; Best Solo, Best
Group and Best Band. Performances are limited to 4 minutes. Sign-up
deadline is Feb. 20 in the SGA Office.
The Homecoming games between Chipola and Gulf Coast are set for Saturday,
Feb. 25. The women game tips off at 5:30 p.m. Chipola president Dr. Gene Prough
and his wife, Priscilla, will host an Alumni Reception in the Hospitality Room
beginning at 6:30 p.m. All alumni, college retirees and friends of the college
are invited.
Also on Saturday, Feb. 25, a life-size bronze statue of legendary Chipola
basketball coach Milton H. Johnson will be unveiled during pre-game of the
Chipola men’s game. Friends and former players raised the funds for the
bronze likeness of Coach Johnson that will be erected at the entrance to the
gymnasium. The homecoming court will be presented
during halftime of the men’s game which begins at 7:30 p.m.

AWARDS GRANTS TO LOCAL ARTS TEACHERS
MARIANNA—The Chipola Regional Arts Association’s annual mini-grant
program set a new record this season with 27 applications from art, music, and
theatre teachers across Chipola’s five counties.
Originally, CRAA had budgeted for ten $200 awards, but a generous
donation from Florida Public Utilities allowed for five additional $200 awards.
The following 15 schools were awarded mini-grants to be used in their
art, music, and theatre programs: Cassandra Adams, Dayspring Christian Academy;
Norma Bean, Cottondale Elementary School; Kathy Blalock, Bethlehem High; Richard
Bouton, Graceville High; Rebecca Dilmore, Cottondale High; Janet Edewaard,
Blountstown Middle School; Gayle Grissett, W.R. Tolar K-8 School; Stewart
Hobbie, Blountstown Middle School; Heather Howell, Poplar Springs High; Karon
Mattox, Poplar Springs High; Gyll Moore, Liberty County High; Roberta T. Newell,
Graceville Elementary School; Gail Seabach, Vernon Elementary School; Vicki
Steverson, Bonifay Elementary School; and Ricky Ward, Holmes County High.
Dr. Daniel Powell, Executive Director of CRAA, says, “This historic surge
in applicants is a testament to how much this supplemental funding means to our
community. As CRAA starts its annual ‘Partners in the Arts’ fundraising
campaign, I hope people will see the value of their donation and all the
wonderful benefits it will bring our community.”

SELECTIONS AT CRAA MEETING
MARIANNA—The public is invited to attend the Chipola Regional Arts
Association (CRAA) meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Jim’s Buffet, with a
Dutch-treat luncheon at 11:30 a.m. with the program beginning at noon.
The program will feature the Chipola Theatre students performing
selections from the musical “Godspell.” One of the biggest Broadway
successes of all time, “Godspell,” will be the last musical in the old theatre
that will be replaced by the new
Center for the Arts.
The production will run Feb. 29 through March 4. Tickets go on sale in the
Chipola Business Office on Feb. 16.
CRAA will be enhancing their door prizes to include free tickets to
“Godspell” and to the next Artist Series, “Dance Alive.”

ALUMNI MUSICIANS TO PERFORM AT ST. LUKE’S EPISCOPAL
MARIANNA—Chipola College alumni Rebecca Boggs and John Baumer will
perform a vocal concert of classical favorites at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on
Sunday, Feb. 26, at 4 p.m.
The concert is to help support their study abroad trip to Germany.
Currently, Rebecca and John are near completion of the undergraduate music
degrees at Troy University.
Although admission is free, any donations will be used to help offset the
cost of the trip.
Chipola Associate Dean of Fine and Performing Arts Dr. Daniel Powell
says, “The study abroad program will not only expose them to a culturally rich
country, but also give them the opportunity to see where some of the greatest
composers and musicians once lived and thrived.”
The two students were in Dr. Powell’s first music class he taught at
Chipola. Dr. Powell, says, “They will be among the many graduates that have
represented our program with distinction and we are all very proud of them.”
Many Chipola alumni from the Southeast and as far away as New York
recently returned to Chipola to participate in the Show Choir Jazzmatazz
concerts. “Chipola’s strong art programs continue to unite alumni and represent
the college beyond graduation,” Powell said.

WIN FLAT SCREENS AT CHIPOLA GAMES
MARIANNA--Terry Allen of the Graceville Badcock and More store donated
two 50” Plasma television sets to winners in a Half Court Shootout at Chipola
College on Feb. 4.
Jameel Wilson, a 14 year old on the Marianna Middle School basketball
team, made a half-court bank shot to win a TV during the Chipola women’s game.
Jameel’s mother Ida Wilson played basketball in Mississippi and his father Alvin
Wilson played football at Marianna High School.
Cephus Green, a student at W.R. Tolar School in Bristol, swished the
half-court shot to win a TV during the Chipola men’s game.
Allen has donated flat screen televisions for the contest for the past
couple of years with no winners until Saturday. He usually donates the
televisions to the college after the season for the various sports to use in
fundraisers.
Allen, a Chipola alumnus, says, “I’m just happy to help Chipola and to
see the crowd get so excited. These are two nice kids and I’m glad they were
able to win the televisions.”

HOSTS NORTHWEST IN LEAGUE MATCHUPS
MARIANNA— Chipola hosts Northwest Florida State in a pair of big
conference games Tuesday, Feb. 14, in the Milton H. Johnson Health Center. The
women’s game tips off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.
The Lady Indians improved to 4-4 in conference play and 18-8 overall with
a big 55-47 win over Gulf Coast on Feb. 8. Sara Djassi led Chipola with 16
points. Oneal Session had 15. Chipola led 30-18 at the half.
Chipola head coach David Lane says, “All around, a great defensive
effort. We held Gulf Coast to only 10 points with five minutes to go in the
first half.” The Lady Indians led the Lady Commodores by as many as 17
late in the game. Chipola was 23 of 27 from the free throw line.
As of Feb. 9, Chipola is tied for third in the women’s league race with
Northwest Florida. The women’s conference standings are: Pensacola (7-1), Gulf
Coast (5-3), Northwest (4-4), Chipola (4-4) and Tallahassee (0-8). In the
Feb. 7 FCSAA women’s poll, Pensacola is first. Gulf Coast is second. Northwest
is fourth. Chipola is fifth and Tallahassee is ninth.
The top three women’s teams in the Panhandle Conference earn a berth to
the state tournament, March 7-10, at Chipola.
Chipola lost a close 71-60 game to Pensacola on Feb. 4, despite an
outstanding performance by Jelleah
Sidney, the FCSAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. Sidney, a
freshman from Queens, NY, scored 16 of Chipola’s 22 first half points and
finished with 26 points overall. She was 9-of-17 from the floor and 7-of-9 from
the free throw line. She also grabbed 15 rebounds to complete the double-double
while recording two assists and five steals in 38-plus minutes of action.
Chipola scored a big 57-56 win over Northwest Florida State on Jan. 28.
Jena Brazzle led Chipola with 15. Sidney scored 13. Jenice Johnson had 12 points
and 12 rebounds.
The Indians improved to 4-4 in
conference play and 20-5 overall with a 64-47 win over Gulf Coast on Feb. 8.
Trantell Knight led the Indians with 11. Tevin Baskin and Mohammed each scored
10. Kruize Pinkins had 9. Earl Watson had seven. Joseph Uchebo scored six.
Chipola head coach Headrick says, “This is the best team win we’ve had
all year. I’m proud of the way our guys came out and responded. They’ve have
calmed down and started playing like there’s no pressure on them. Our guard play
is getting better and offensively, Joseph Uchebo’s presence is important. Even
though he’s not scoring a lot, teams still have to guard him.”
Chipola beat Pensacola 61-48 on Feb. 4. Terel Hall led the Indians with
13 points. Tevin Baskin had 10.
The
Pensacola game marked the return of Joseph Uchebo missed five conference games
with a knee injury. Uchebo pulled down 8
rebounds and scored six points.
Chipola suffered a close 63-55 loss to Northwest Florida State on Jan.
28. Aishon White led Chipola with 11 points. Mohammad Lee had 9
points.
The Indians are still in contention for a state tournament berth heading
into the final round left of league play. The top two men’s teams in the
Panhandle Conference earn a berth to the state tournament, March 7-10, at
Chipola.
As of Feb. 9, the Panhandle Conference men’s standings are: Northwest
(7-1), Pensacola (5-3), Chipola (4-4), Gulf Coast (3-5), and Tallahassee (1-7).
In the Feb. 7 FCSAA poll, Chipola’s men were ranked seventh. Northwest is
first. Pensacola is fifth. Gulf Coast is tenth.

MARIANNA—The Chipola College student body nominated 30 students for
election to the Homecoming Court.
The top two freshmen vote winners (women and men) and the top three
sophomore or upper classmen vote winners are named to the Homecoming Court.
Freshman female attendants are Kaylee Toole and Shicola Weston. Freshman male
attendants are: Charles (PJ) Buggs, Jr. and John Whittington. Sophomore

Celebrity. The Homecoming Talent show is Wednesday at 10:05 a.m. in the Arts
Center. The contest is open to any campus group or individual enrolled at
Chipola. Cash prizes will be awarded to: Best Overall; Best Solo, Best
Group and Best Band. Performances are limited to 4 minutes. Sign up
deadline is Feb. 20. Thursday, Feb. 24, is Blue and Gold Warpaint day with

CHIPOLA WINS REGIONAL BRAIN BOWL,
ADVANCES TO STATE
MARIANNA—Chipola College won the Panhandle Regional Brain Bowl on Feb. 11
and will now advance to the State Tournament to be held at the College of
Central Florida in Ocala March 22-24.
Chipola was 7-0 in the regional tournament, followed by Pensacola (5-2).
The Chipola team scored 3,785 total points and gave up only 660 in all seven
rounds of the tournament.
Paul Kelson was the top individual with 700 total points and a 100
point-per-game average. Travis Bontrager was sixth overall averaging 35 points
per game.
The results of the four regional tournaments are:
East Central Region–first, Seminole State
College; second, College of Central Florida A; Panhandle Region–first, Chipola
College; second, Pensacola State College; Southern Region–first, Broward College
Blue; second, Indian River State College; West Central Region—first, Valencia

BLACK HISTORY PROGRAM SET FOR FEB. 24
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Black Student Union and the Association of
United Professionals will host a Black History Month Program, Friday, Feb. 24,
from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in the Chipola Arts Center. Dinner will be served.
Dr. Rufus Wood of Panama City is the guest
speaker. A prominent local civil rights leader and pastor Wood was honored in
2010 by the Glenwood Community Center for his 25 years of dedication in bringing
social justice to the community. Wood has served as pastor of the Love Center
Missionary Baptist Church, Moderator of the Progressive Missionary Baptist
District Association of West Florida, and President of the Bay County branch of
the NAACP.
The public is invited to enjoy the free festivities and dinner, while
learning more about Black History.

COURSE SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will hold an 8-hour Firearms (Semi-Automatic)
Familiarization course, Saturday, Feb. 25, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Reddoch
Firing Range on the Blue Springs Highway.
The course will involve classroom time, coupled with extensive gun
handling and live fire shooting. Successful completion of
the course may be used in applying for a Concealed Weapons Permit.
Application packets for the permit will be furnished upon request.
Registration and payment of the $100 fee must be completed in advance. A
24-hour cancellation notice is required for a refund. Class size is limited.
Students must be at least 18 years of age. Use of a weapon and ammunition are
included in the cost of the course. No vending machines are available at the
range so participants are asked to bring lunch.

STEEDLEY IS FCSAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
TALLAHASSEE—Chipola College outfielder Chelsey Steedley is this week’s
FCSAA Softball Player of the Week.
Steedley, a sophomore from Zolfo Springs, batted .692 (9-for-13) with
eight runs scored, three doubles, three triples, for a 1.385 slugging percentage
with 13 RBIs in four games.
She hit safely in all four games last week, beginning Feb. 11 with a
3-for-3 effort against Pearl River, a game in which she also set a school record
with eight RBIs. Later that day, she was 4-for-5 with three more RBIs against
Middle Georgia. On Feb. 12, she had a hit, run scored and RBI in games against
Gordon and Alabama Southern. For the week, she also was a perfect 5-for-5 in
stolen bases.
Chipola is on the road this week, playing Feb. 17-18 in Aiken, SC; Feb.
22 at Enterprise State; and Feb. 24-26 in Panama City. The team returns
home March 9, for games with Georgia Perimeter College at 2 and 4 p.m.

STATUE OF
CHIPOLA COACH MILTON JOHNSON TO BE UNVEILED FEB. 25
MARIANNA –A
life-size bronze statue of legendary Chipola College basketball coach Milton H.
Johnson will be unveiled during pre-game of the Chipola men’s homecoming game
which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 25.
Friends and former players are raised the funds for the bronze likeness
of Coach Johnson that will be erected at the entrance to the gymnasium that
bears his name on the Chipola campus.
During four decades of coaching basketball at Chipola and Campbellton
High School, Johnson’s teams won over 800 games. Between 1955 and 1961,
his Campbellton teams won three state championships and recorded an incredible
55-game winning streak. His Chipola teams won 628 games from 1961 to 1993
and played in seven national tournaments. He was named Division Coach of
the Year nine times, Region VIII Coach of the Year six times and Florida
community college Coach of the Year four times.
Following Johnson’s death in 2009, many of his former players and friends
expressed interest in finding an appropriate way to preserve his legacy.
Former player Robert Trammell coordinated the project for the Chipola
Appreciation Club. “The statue of Coach Johnson is being funded entirely
by private donations,” Trammell said. “The donors want to recognize Coach
Johnson for the contributions he made to their lives by establishing a lasting
memorial to this great man.”
The bronze statue of Johnson was created by sculptor Bradley Cooley, of
Lamont, Florida, who also has molded images of coach Bobby Bowden, entertainers
Ray Charles and Otis Redding, and golfer Bobby Jones.
“We have most of the funds need for the statue,” Trammell said, “but we
welcome donations from anyone who loved coach Johnson. We are grateful for all
contributions, large or small.”

INDUCTED INTO CHIPOLA’S ORDER OF THE GOLDEN WARRIOR
MARIANNA—Chipola athletics honored three of the college’s most generous
supporters and said goodbye to its athletic director on Feb. 14.
Terry Allen of Badcock and More in Graceville, Keith Williams of State
Farm Insurance and Mickey Gilmore of the Marianna Wal-Mart were inducted into
Chipola’s Order of the Golden Warrior. Each received engraved figures of
Native American warriors.
Keith Williams sponsors the Chipola Airship, a real blimp that flies in
the gym and drops gift coupons on the fans, as well as the live radar pitch
speed displays for Chipola baseball and softball. Terry Allen has donated
numerous flat screen televisions for a half court shootouts and fundraisers.
Mickey Gilmore has donated thousands in merchandise, food and cash.
Chipola athletic director Dr. Dale O’Daniel, said, “We have lots of
chiefs, but the warriors are the ones who fight the battle. These three men
always give Chipola whatever we need and more.”
Following the ceremony, Dr. O’Daniel also announced his upcoming
retirement. After serving as Chipola Athletic director for nine years, he will
step down at the end of the basketball season. Under his direction, Chipola
athletics has captured two national titles, 14 state championships, 14 panhandle
championships and graduated more than 200 student athletes.
Chipola president Dr. Gene Prough, says, “Chipola is grateful for Dr.
O’Daniel’s visionary guidance and leadership, dedication and diligence to our
community and to athletics.” O’Daniel received a standing ovation from the
crowd.

loss to top-ranked Northwest on Feb. 14. Tevin Baskin led Chipola with 11
points. Earl Watson had 11 points and six rebounds.
Chipola scored a 47-40 win over Tallahassee on Feb. 11.
Tevin Baskin Baskin finished
with 12 points and was 8-for-8 from the free throw line. It was a battle of
turnovers as Chipola committed 35 to Tallahassee's 20, but the Eagles managed
only eight points off the Chipola miscues. The Indians led 25-22 at the
half.

The game marked the return of
Joseph Uchebo missed five conference games with
a knee injury. Uchebo pulled down 8 rebounds and scored six points.
The Indians are still in contention for a state tournament berth one game
into the final round of league play. The top two men’s teams in the conference
earn a berth to the state tournament. As of Feb. 16, the conference standings
are: Northwest (9-1), Pensacola (6-3), Chipola (5-5), Gulf Coast (3-6), and
Tallahassee (1-8).
In the Feb. 14 FCSAA poll, Chipola’s men were ranked seventh. Northwest
is first. Pensacola is sixth.
The Lady Indians slipped to 5-5
in conference play and 17-9 overall with a 59-55 loss to Northwest on Feb. 14.
Jenice Johnson led Chipola with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Sara Djassi had 11
points and 10 rebounds. Oneal Sessions had 10 points and seven reounds.

11. Tallahassee took a 29-28 lead at the half. Sara Djassi led Chipola with 13

Chipola lost a close 71-60 game to Pensacola on Feb. 4, despite an

Jelleah Sidney, the FCSAA Player of the Week of Feb. 7. She finished with 26
points and 15 rebounds.
Chipola scored a 57-56 win over Northwest on Jan. 28. Jena Brazzle
led Chipola with 15. Sidney scored 13. Jenice Johnson had 12 points and 12
rebounds.
As of Feb. 16, the
conference standings are: Pensacola (7-2), Gulf Coast (7-3), Chipola (5-5),

The top three women’s teams in the Panhandle
earn a berth to the state tournament.

STATUE OF
CHIPOLA COACH MILTON JOHNSON TO BE UNVIELED FEB. 25
MARIANNA –A life-size bronze statue of legendary Chipola College
basketball coach Milton H. Johnson will be unveiled during pre-game of the
Chipola men’s homecoming game which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb.
25.
Friends and former players are raised the funds for the bronze likeness
of Coach Johnson that will be erected at the entrance to the gymnasium that
bears his name on the Chipola campus.
During four decades of coaching basketball at Chipola and Campbellton
High School, Johnson’s teams won over 800 games. Between 1955 and 1961,
his Campbellton teams won three state championships and recorded an incredible
55-game winning streak. His Chipola teams won 628 games from 1961 to 1993
and played in seven national tournaments. He was named Division Coach of
the Year nine times, Region VIII Coach of the Year six times and Florida
community college Coach of the Year four times.
Following Johnson’s death in 2009, many of his former players and friends
expressed interest in finding an appropriate way to preserve his legacy.
Former player Robert Trammell coordinated the project for the Chipola
Appreciation Club. “The statue of Coach Johnson is being funded entirely
by private donations,” Trammell said. “The donors want to recognize Coach
Johnson for the contributions he made to their lives by establishing a lasting
memorial to this great man.”
The bronze statue of Johnson was created by sculptor Bradley Cooley, of
Lamont, Florida, who also has molded images of Coach Bobby Bowden, entertainers
Ray Charles and Otis Redding, and golfer Bobby Jones.
The inscription on the statue reads: MILTON H. JOHNSON “A loved and
respected champion, both on the court and in the game of life. He was a quiet,
humble teacher and friend to all, who led by example and positively influenced
the lives of thousands of people.
His legacy endures…making the world a better place for all.”
“We have most of the funds need
for the statue,” Trammell said, “but we welcome donations from anyone who loved
coach Johnson. We are grateful for all contributions, large or small.”

MARIANNA—Some 145 students from 13 area
high schools recently competed in writing, reading,
speech, oral interpretation, literature, humanities, grammar, and Spanish
contests at Chipola College on Feb. 17.
The occasion was the Twenty-second Annual Throssell Literature/Language
Festival hosted by Chipola’s Letters Department. The purpose of the
festival is to recognize and encourage academic excellence.
Prizes were awarded to first, second and third places, as well as two
honorable mentions, in each category. The winner of the President’s
Reading Contest received a special medallion as well as a cash award.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE SEMINAR SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College
will offer a small business seminar entitled, “International Import/Export Trade
Basics” on Friday, March 9. The first five participants to register get free
admission. The seminar will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
This class provides an overview of import and export opportunities for
Florida businesses. Participants will learn about global businesses and trade
investments. The seminar will discuss ways to develop a trade plan and provide
resources for starting a trade business.
The seminar will meet in Room M-108 of the Chipola Business and
Technology building. Pre-registration is required. Cost of each seminar is $30.

MARIANNA—Chipola College
business professor Lee Shook and his student volunteers are providing free tax
preparation and free electronic filing.
The free service—for individual tax returns only—is available from 9 a.m.
to 2:30 p.m., on Wednesdays beginning Jan. 25 in room M-201. Reservations
or appointment times are requested. Those who drop in may have a longer wait.
Preparation time is usually around 30 minutes.
Professor Shook says, “If it is a very complicated return, we ask that
you continue to use your paid professional, but if it is a fairly simple return
we can help. We will do Schedule A, itemized deductions.”
For faster refunds, taxpayers are asked to bring a personal check which
has routing information needed for electronic refunds.

HOSTS GULF COAST FOR HOMECOMING
MARIANNA—Chipola hosts Gulf Coast for homecoming on Saturday, Feb. 25, in
the Milton H. Johnson Health Center. The women tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by
the men at 7:30 p.m.
All alumni, college retirees and friends of the college are invited to
attend an Alumni Reception hosted by Chipola president Dr. Gene Prough and his
wife, Priscilla, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Hospitality Room.

The Indians improved to 6-5 in
conference play and 22-6 overall with a 59-56 win over Pensacola on Feb. 22. JT
Thomas led Chipola with 17 points, including five three-pointers and the
game-winning three with 6 seconds remaining.
The win put Chipola and Pensacola in a tie for second place in the league
and a berth in the State Tournament. If Chipola beats Gulf Coast and Pensacola
loses to Tallahassee, Chipola will make the tournament. If Chipola and Pensacola
both win or both lose on Saturday, there will be a one game playoff between the
two teams, Monday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m., at Northwest Florida in Niceville.
Chipola suffered a 67-58 loss to top-ranked Northwest on Feb. 14. Tevin
Baskin led Chipola with 11 points. Earl Watson had 11 points and six rebounds.
Chipola scored a 47-40 win over Tallahassee on Feb. 11.

CHIPOLA’S WRIGHT IS
Player of the Week
MARIANNA—Chipola College’s
Ebony Wright is the FCSAA Softball Player of the Week for Feb. 21.
Wright, a sophomore outfielder from Angleton, Texas batted .800
(12-for-15) with one home run in five games. Over the same span, she amassed a
1.133 slugging percentage with five RBIs.
Wright opened play with three straight three-hit games against
USC-Sumter, Spartanburg Methodist and Aiken Tech. She finished the week by
hitting safely and scoring at least one run in all five outings.
Her best game came against Chattahoochee Valley on Feb. 18 when she was
2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. For the week, Wright had two doubles,
drew three walks and was a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen bases.
The Lady Indians head to Panama City Feb. 24-26 for seven games and to
Cullman, AL, for games on March 2 and 3. Chipola returns home March 9 for a
double-header with Georgia Perimeter at 2 p.m. Chipola opens conference play
March 15 at Tallahassee.

STATE JUCO
BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT BEGINS MARCH 7 AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—The top 16
community college basketball teams in Florida will begin arriving in Marianna
Tuesday for the Florida Junior College Men's and Women’s State Basketball
Tournament set for March 7-10 in Chipola College’s Milton H. Johnson Health
Center.
Some 400 basketball players along with coaches, cheerleaders and fans
will fill nearly 200 hotel rooms during the tourney. Teams will begin practice
Tuesday in the Johnson Center and in local high school gyms. Each team is
assigned a local host family to help with any need that may arise during the
tournament.
Numerous Division I College coaches and recruiters also are expected to
scout the talent in the competition. Tournament officials estimate that more
than $250,000 will flow into the area during the tournament from food, lodging,
recreation and incidental expenses.
The men’s tournament tips
off Wednesday, March 7, with games at 1, 3, 6 and 8 p.m.
Women’s action begins Thursday,
March 8, with games at 1, 3, 6 and 8 p.m.
Men’s and women’s semi-finals are set for Friday, March 9, with men’s
games at 1 and 6 p.m. and women’s contests at 3 and 8 p.m. The State
Championship title games are set for Saturday, March 10, with the men at 5 p.m.,
and the women at 7:30 p.m.
Waste Management is official host sponsor for the event. The Jackson
County Tourist Development Council awarded a grant to help promote the
tournament. The Florida Lottery is also a major sponsor of the event.
Tournament passes—$25 for adults and $15 for students—will get fans into
all 14 exciting tournament games. Single session tickets—two games—are $10
each.
