SHOWALTER
AND BAUTISTA TO HEADLINE CHIPOLA BASEBALL EVENT
MARIANNA—Orioles manager Buck Showalter, Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista and
dozens of other former Chipola baseball players are expected to return to their
alma mater Feb. 4-6 for the fourth annual Chipola Baseball Alumni event.
On Feb. 5, former players will gather for Fastest Pitch and Homerun contests. A
Kid’s Baseball Camp is also slated. The jerseys of Orioles manager Buck
Showalter and MLB Homerun leader Jose Bautista will be retired during a pre-game
ceremony before Chipola’s Saturday afternoon game. A $100 a Ticket Pro Baseball
Celebrity Dinner is slated for 6:30 p.m.
Showalter worked as an ESPN analyst on Baseball Tonight before taking over the
Orioles in July of 2010. He inherited a ballclub with the worst record in the majors
at 32–73. But Showalter quickly turned the program around finishing 34–23, the
best record among American League East clubs during the same stretch.
Showalter has managed the Yankees, Diamondbacks and Rangers.
He grew up in
Century, FL, and played at Chipola in 1976. From there he moved on to

batted .459 in
1977. He was selected by the
New York Yankees in the fifth round of the draft, and spent seven seasons in
the Yankees’
minor league system. Showalter never played in the
majors in part because he played
first base,
the same position as Yankee
Don
Mattingly.
Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays was Major League Baseball’s 2010 homerun
leader. With 54 round-trippers, he became only the 26th player in history to launch at least
50 homers in one season. Bautista, who played at Chipola
before being drafted by the Pirates in 2000, is
quick to credit Chipola and baseball coach Jeff Johnson for contributing to his
success. "Coach Johnson has and still has a great impact on my life. It
began from the time I arrived in Marianna, at age 18 and continues today as I
play in the Major Leagues.”
The 29 year-old has also played for the Pirates, the Orioles and the Royals.
He won this
year's Silver Slugger Award, the Hank Aaron Award and finished fourth in voting
for the American League MVP.
Showalter and Bautista also visited Chipola at the 2010 Alumni event with former

FROM NEW BOOK TO FUND VILLAGE SCHOLARSHIP AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College alumna Margena Bell Myrick has written a new book which
she hopes will provide money for The Village Scholarship at Chipola College.
The book, entitled, “Grandparents and Grand Lessons,” is a book told from
Margena’s perspective as a six year-old growing up in Marianna. The book
includes wisdom and anecdotes from her grandparents. The book is available at
Basford Christian Supply, CJ’s Country Pantry, Gadsden Art Center in Quincy,
Northview Christian Church Bookstore in Dothan and Amazon.com.
A portion of proceeds from book sales will go to the Village Scholarship which
was established in honor of Margena’s mother Dorothy J. Bell, a long-serving
employee of the college and a mother-figure to hundreds of students. “Mrs. Dot,”
as she is affectionately known, worked at the college for 35 years from 1968
until her retirement in 2004. She served 16 years in the kitchen of the student
center and 19 years in the college dormitory.
Her daughter Margena said, “Over the years my brothers and I watched mother care
for countless numbers of students both on campus and off campus. Because many of
the students had no money to get home or were out of the dorm for whatever
reason, our house often looked like a meeting of the United Nations.” To this
day students continue to thank her with countless cards, flowers, calls and
other forms of appreciation on her birthday and holidays.
Margena said, “Our mother has truly been a blessing to us and countless others.
She is retired now, but the show must go on. This scholarship is our way of
saying thanks for all she has done for us and other folks that were blessed as a
result of crossing her path at Chipola.” The Village Scholarship is designed to
assist students who need financial support for classes, fuel, food, and other
needs.
Tax deductible donations of any amount may be mailed to: The Village
Scholarship, c/o the Chipola College Foundation, 3094 Indian Circle, Marianna,

SCHOLARSHIP NAMED IN MEMORY OF CLARK MAXWELL
TALLAHASSEE— Clark Maxwell Jr., former director of
Florida's Community College system, died Jan. 18 at his Palm Coast home. He was
76.
The Florida College System Foundation has created the Clark Maxwell Memorial
Scholarship Fund in his memory. The cheerful, curly
haired Maxwell was the Senate's Republican leader when he resigned in 1984 to
become executive director of what was the State Board of Community Colleges. He
held that post until 1997 when he retired.
Community and state colleges now are under the State Board of Education. Their
top administrator is Chancellor of Florida Colleges Willis Holcombe, who has
asked the schools to fly their flags at half-staff through Friday in Maxwell's
honor.
Chipola College president Dr. Gene Prough, who considered Maxwell a mentor,
said, “Florida Community Colleges never had a better friend than Clark Maxwell.
He worked hard to help build a system that provides countless opportunities for
students in Florida.”
Maxwell’s wife Margo requested that the scholarship fund be established as an
option for those who would like to commemorate his life in a very constructive
way. The collected funds will be matched, if possible, and distributed to
students.
Born in 1934, Maxwell is credited with raising the profile of Florida’s
community colleges while keeping their local autonomy as well as launching joint
legislative lobbying efforts among community colleges.
In 1974, Maxwell began representing Melbourne in the Legislature, serving four
years in the House and six in the Senate. Maxwell served on the House and
Senate education committees and as Senate Minority leader. He was twice
named “Legislator of the Year” by the Florida Association of Community Colleges.
Part of Maxwell’s legacy includes the Clark Maxwell, Jr. Lifelong Learning
Center at Brevard Community College, the Clark Maxwell, Jr. Library at
Lake-Sumter Community College and the Clark Maxwell, Jr. Marine Environmental
Habitat and Observatory at The Florida Keys Community College.
Maxwell was married to wife Margo, had two daughters and one son from a previous
marriage, Marsha, Judy and Clark III.
Donors may contribute by
making checks payable to: Clark Maxwell Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box

He inherited a ballclub with the worst record in
the majors at 32–73. But Showalter quickly turned the program around finishing
34–23, the best record among American League East clubs during the same stretch.
Showalter has managed the Yankees, Diamondbacks and Rangers.
He grew up in
Century, FL, and played at Chipola in 1976.
From there he moved on to baseball Mississippi State where he was an
All-American who
batted .459 in
1977. He was selected by the
New York Yankees in the fifth round of the
draft, and spent seven seasons in the Yankees’
minor league system.
Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays was Major League Baseball’s 2010 homerun
leader. With 54 round-trippers, he became only the 26th player in history to
launch at least 50 homers in one season. Bautista, who played at Chipola before
being drafted by the Pirates in 2000, is quick to credit Chipola and baseball
coach Jeff Johnson for contributing to his success. "Coach Johnson has and still
has a great impact on my life. It began from the time I arrived in
Marianna, at age 18 and continues today as I play in the Major Leagues.”
The 29 year-old has also played for the Pirates, the Orioles and the Royals. He
won this year's Silver Slugger Award, the Hank Aaron Award and finished fourth
in voting for the American League MVP.
Showalter and Bautista also visited Chipola at the 2010 Alumni event with former
players: Richie Smith, Ryan Chaffee, Jaye Chapman, Jeff Bosse, Raynel Robles,
Brandon Street, Jeff Mathis, Jake Mathis, Blake Balkcom, Drew Miller, Luke
Johnson, Angel Medina, Kellen Ludwig, Jonathan Swearingen, Luis Bautista, Ethan
Martin, Josh Lawhon, Drew Cook, David Credeur, Grant Conyers, Jason Barber,
Travis Anderson, Victor Alvarez, Jeff Mathis, Josh Storm, David Oswalt, Alan
Horne, Mat Gamel, Liam Shanahan, Andrew Gay, Luis Bautista, Kevin Johnson, Jay
Scott and Shawn Larkin.

CHIPOLA RANKED NINTH IN NATIONAL PRE-SEASON POLL
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Chipola College (Florida) is the ranked ninth in the
NJCAA National Pre-season Poll released by the NJCAA and Perfect Game USA on
Jan. 28.
Howard College (Texas) enters the 2011 NJCAA Division I baseball season ranked
No. 1. Howard was the 2009 national champion.
San Jacinto College – North (Texas), State College of Florida - Manatee, 2009
national champion Walters State Community College (Tenn.) and Central Arizona
College round out the top five. Navarro College (Texas), Eastern Oklahoma State
College, Middle Georgia College, Chipola College, Fla., and 2010 national
champion Iowa Western Community College make up the top 10.
Allan Simpson of Perfect Game USA had this to say about Chipola, “The 2007
national champs, Chipola stumbled in 2010, even with a roster that included two
prominent unsigned picks from the 2009 draft: first-rounder LeVon Washington and
second-rounder Jake Eliopoulos. Both players were one and done, and the Indians
have re-tooled for 2011 with transfers like ex-Cal State Fullerton C Geno
Escalante and ex-Mississippi State LHP Luke Bole, and prominent freshmen like
Louisiana 1B Austin Southall (Giants/19th round) and OF/LHP Derrick Pitts, one
of the best two-way talents ever recruited by the school.”
Perfect Game predicts that Chipola will finish second in the state tournament
behind long-time foe State College of Florida (Manatee).
Chipola also has the number nine player in the Top 10 JUCO Professional
Prospects from Perfect Game USA, in Geno Escalante. Heavily recruited as a prep
senior, Escalante saw limited action (13 AB) as a Cal State Fullerton freshman
and moved on; has offensive upside, needs to work on defensive skills.
