LATE REGISTRATION CONTINUES
AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Spring classes at Chipola College begin Monday, Jan. 7; however,
late registration will continue through noon on Wednesday, Jan. 9.
Drop/add runs through noon on Jan. 11.
There are several steps to completing the application process: (1)
complete the college Admission Application; call 718-2311 for assistance; (2)
request a final high school transcript be sent to Chipola Admission and Records
Office; and (3) take the College Placement Test; call 718-2284 for assistance.
Chipola offers the Bachelor of Science Degree,
the Associate in Arts Degree, the Associate in Science Degree and Workforce
Development programs.
Bachelor’s Degrees include: Education majors in Middle and High School
Math or Science, English Education, Exceptional Student Education and Elementary
Education; Business Administration degree with concentrations in Management or
Accounting; and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Additionally, the
college offers the Educator Preparation Institute, a Teacher Certification
program for those with a B.S. in a non-teaching field.
The Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree is designed for students who plan to
complete their first two years of college work and then transfer to a four-year
program at Chipola or another college or university. Credits earned are
transferable and are applicable toward a bachelor’s degree. Academic

Several Associate in Science (AS) and Workforce programs are offered
which provide training for high wage jobs. Workforce programs include:
Automotive Service Technology, Firefighter, Law Enforcement Officer,
Correctional Officer, Cosmetology, Cross-Over Corrections to Law Enforcement,
Cross-Over Law Enforcement to Corrections and Patient Care Assistant.
Associate in Science (AS) programs include: Business Administration,
Early Childhood Education, Computer Information Technology, Fire Science
Technology, Criminal Justice Technology (Crime Scene Track), Networking Services
Technology, Culinary Management, Nursing (RN and LPN) and Recreation Technology.
College Credit Certificate programs include: Child Care Center

HAIRSPRAY AUDITIONS ARE JAN. 7 AND 8 AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College Theatre will hold auditions for the hit musical
“Hairspray,” Monday, Jan. 7 and Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m. in the new Center for
the Arts.
This is an open audition for ages 14 and up. Theatre director Charles
Sirmon says, “Dress comfortably and be ready for some 1960’s moves.” No
experience is necessary.
Sirmon will cast a minimum of 18 women and 14 men in named roles as well
as a dancing/singing ensemble. Some roles are
race and gender specific.
“Hairspray” is the Tony Award-winning musical about
Tracy Turnblad, a large girl with big hair and a kind heart. She has only one
passion—to dance. She wins a spot on the
local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show" and is quickly transformed into
a teen celebrity. She then successfully sets
out to vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of the
super handsome Link Larkin, and racially integrate
the television show. Performance dates are March 12-17.

MARIANNA—Tickets are quickly disappearing for Illusionist Sammy Cortino’s
Las Vegas style magic show set for Thursday, Jan. 17, in the Chipola Center for
the Arts.
Sammy Cortino is taking magic back to its roots in its purest, up-to-date
form. His raw, live, unprecedented style brings out a sense of old Hollywood
charm. Going against the mesh of cutting-edge illusionists of today, he is
reviving the classics of magic presented in the spirit of the late Houdini and
Harry Blackstone. Cortino holds a Doctoral Degree in Magic from the
International Magicians Society and is a member of London’s Magic Circle.
Siegfried and Roy and Lance Burton endorsed Cortino’s membership in the
International Brotherhood of Magicians.
Tickets are available online at

be printed at home, or with an order confirmation, will-call tickets will be
available at the box office the night of the show. Box

MAGIC SHOW
AT NEXT CRAA MEETING
MARIANNA—The Chipola Regional Arts Association (CRAA) will feature the
Magic Comedy Show on the meeting program Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Jim’s Buffet and
Grill, with a Dutch-treat buffet luncheon from 11:30 to noon with the program at
noon.
The owner and illusionist, Vernon, is a member of the International
Brotherhood of Magicians and has been practicing magic and illusions since he
was 7 years old. He has a portable studio and performs everything from
large scale illusions to birthday parties. For more information about this

Attendees will also be entered into a drawing for artist series tickets
to Illusionist Sammy Cortino who will perform at the Center for the Arts on

The CRAA just received many applications for their popular mini-grant

Washington County this year. The upcoming Partner in the Arts campaign
makes it possible to continue these programs and improve the cultural life in
the Chipola District.

WORKSHOP SET AT CHIPOLA COLLEGE
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Future Educators Club will host its sixth
Annual Teacher Workshop, Saturday, Feb. 2, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Teachers and students interested in a career in education are invited to attend.
Future educators currently enrolled at Chipola with the assistance of the
education faculty, staff, and education graduates will present the free workshop
for area educators and education students. The day will include various
sessions for elementary, middle, and high school teachers. The students will
present hands-on activities that can be used in the classroom along with samples
for teachers and education majors to take and use in their own classrooms.
The program will include presentations and strategies in Math, Science,
Reading, English, ESOL, and ESE. Sessions include: Getting outside of the
Basal with Reading Strategies; Classroom Management Strategies; How To Make
Science Come Alive; Using JR Tolkien to Teach Poetry and Imagery; Science
Experiments in the Primary Grades; Activities Using Patricia Palacco Texts;
Teaching Middle School Language Arts Through the Use of Pop Culture; Blood
Typing Lab for the Biology Teacher; Get It For Free! (Free Resources Available
to Teachers); Pinterest in the Classroom; English Assessments Other Than Book
Reports; Integrating Art Into Writing; How to Bring the New Student Through a

HOSTS TALLAHASSEE IN CONFERENCE OPENER
MARIANNA—Chipola opens the Panhandle Conference season Saturday, Jan. 5,
with a pair of games against Tallahassee in the Milton H. Johnson Health Center.
The women’s game tips off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.
The Indians are off to a perfect 17-0 start under first year head coach
Patrick Blake who is hoping for a good home crowd to start league play.
“Hopefully we’ll have great fan support. For a lot of our guys, it will be their
first Panhandle game, so it will be a challenge. Every game in this conference
is always going to be a war,” coach Blake said. Tallahassee is 12-4 in
pre-conference games.
The Indians are the top-ranked team in the FCSAA State Top 10. All five
Panhandle teams are represented in the poll. Northwest is third. Gulf
Coast is fifth. Pensacola is seventh and Tallahassee is tenth. Chipola is third
in the NJCAA National poll. Northwest is tenth.
Chipola has a balanced offense with six players averaging in double
figures. Carlos Morris leads Chipola with 13.1 points per game. Kruize Pinkins
is averaging 12.5 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game. Earl Watson is
averaging 11.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Cinmeon Bowers is
averaging 11.1 and 7.1 rebounds. Demetrious Floyd is averaging 11.1 points per
game. Chris Thomas has 10.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Guard Terel Hall
is averaging 5.9 assists and 1.8 steals per game.
The Lady Indians are 15-1 heading into league play against the 11-3 Lady
Eagles. New head coach Greg Franklin is enjoying a full roster for the first
time since Thanksgiving. Leading scorer Lashonda Littleton returned to the team
Dec. 29 after being sidelined with a foot injury since Nov. 24. Littleton leads
the team in scoring and rebounding with 16.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.
Center Treyvonna Brooks is also back from an early season concussion.
Rayven Brooks is also back in top form after a back injury forced her to
miss several games. She is averaging 14.9 points and 7.9 rebounds.
She was the NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Player of the Week for Dec. 3-9.
The 5’11 Guard from
Vallejo, California,
averaged 30 points, 14.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 4.0 steals in two
games. Against Palm Beach, she hit 35 points, collected 11 rebounds, two assists
and three steals in the 87-73 win. She tallied 25 points, 17 rebounds and five
steals in Chipola’s 97-47 win over Brevard. For the week, Brooks shot 53.5
percent (23-of-43) from the floor, 53.8 percent (7-of-13) threes and 70 percent
(7-of-10) from the line.
Chipola has two other players who regularly score in double figures.
Kristine Brance is averaging 15 points per game. Jasmine Crawford is averaging
10 points, 4.6 assists and 3.4 steals per game.
The Lady Indians are twelfth in the NJCAA National Poll. Northwest is
third. Gulf Coast is ninth.
Chipola heads to Northwest Jan. 9 before returning home to host Pensacola
on Tuesday, Jan. 15.

SMALL
BUSINESS SEMINARS SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola
College will offer a series of small business seminars in the coming months.
All seminars meet on Fridays, from 9:30 to 12:30 p.m., in Room M-108 of the
Chipola Business and Technology building.
“Steps to Starting a Small Business”
is Friday, Jan. 25. The seminar
will focus on organizational requirements, licensing, financial assessments,
insurance, marketing, loans, defining customers, location and employee
requirements.
“Business Plans” is
Feb. 15. The seminar will
help participants discover which business type is best suited for their
personality, and how to create a working business model to obtain financing and
create a successful business.
A free seminar, “What the Veterans’ Business Outreach Center Can Do for
You,” is
March 22. The VBOC helps create, develop, and retain veteran-owned
small business enterprises. The VBOC provides training through workshops,
counseling, assistance, and resource utilization services to Veterans,
Service-Disabled Veterans, Reservists, National Guard, and Active Duty business
owners and entrepreneurs. There is no charge for this seminar.
“Government Contracting”
will meet April 19. This
workshop helps business owners identify government agencies to which they can
market their businesses. Participants will discuss the effective marketing and
ways to find a proposal opportunity, and how to write a winning bid.
Cost of each seminar is $30. The first six Chipola students to sign
up for any seminar will receive free admission. Students should contact

Annual Teacher Workshop, Saturday, Feb. 2, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Teachers and students interested in a career in education are invited to attend.
Future educators currently enrolled at Chipola with the assistance of the
education faculty, staff, and education graduates will present the free workshop
for area educators and education students. The day will include various
sessions for elementary, middle, and high school teachers. The students will
present hands-on activities that can be used in the classroom along with samples
for teachers and education majors to take and use in their own classrooms.
The program will include presentations and strategies in Math, Science,
Reading, English, ESOL, and ESE. Sessions include: Getting outside of the
Basal with Reading Strategies; Classroom Management Strategies; How To Make
Science Come Alive; Using JR Tolkien to Teach Poetry and Imagery; Science
Experiments in the Primary Grades; Activities Using Patricia Palacco Texts;
Teaching Middle School Language Arts Through the Use of Pop Culture; Blood
Typing Lab for the Biology Teacher; Get It For Free! (Free Resources Available
to Teachers); Pinterest in the Classroom; English Assessments Other Than Book
Reports; Integrating Art Into Writing; How to Bring the New Student Through a
Period of Culture Shock; Integrating Social Studies into Your Everyday
Curriculum; Using Your Tablet/IPAD to Maximize Instruction; The Classroom Polar
Express; and a General Ideas Room with representatives from the
Chipola Area Autism Resource Center.
In addition to the student-led sessions Dee Brock (Roulhac Middle) and
Taura Brock (Vernon Middle) will be presenting Cooperative Learning Strategies
and Techniques as a guest session. Heather Bailey (Graceville Elementary) will
be presenting a session on Whole Brain Teaching
The workshop will be held in the Literature/Language (Building Z) on the
Chipola campus. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with the first session at
8:15 a.m.

MAGIC SHOW
AT NEXT CRAA MEETING
MARIANNA—The Chipola Regional Arts Association (CRAA) will feature the
Magic Comedy Show on the meeting program Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Jim’s Buffet and
Grill, with a Dutch-treat buffet luncheon from 11:30 to noon with the program at
noon.
The owner and illusionist, Vernon, is a member of the International
Brotherhood of Magicians and has been practicing magic and illusions since he
was 7 years old. He has a portable studio and performs everything from
large scale illusions to birthday parties. For more information about this

Attendees will also be entered into a drawing for artist series tickets
to Illusionist Sammy Cortino who will perform at the Center for the Arts on

The CRAA just received many applications for their popular mini-grant

Washington County this year. The upcoming Partner in the Arts campaign
makes it possible to continue these programs and improve the cultural life in
the Chipola District.

HOSTS PENSACOLA TUESDAY, JAN. 15
MARIANNA—Chipola hosts Pensacola in a pair of Panhandle Conference games
Tuesday, Jan. 15, in the Milton H. Johnson Health Center. The women’s game tips
off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.
The Indians (1-1) suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of
arch-rival Northwest Florida State (80-65) on Jan. 9 in Niceville.
It was Chipola coach Patrick Blake’s first loss as a head coach after
leading the Indians to a perfect 18-0 start. “I was
really disappointed with how the game turned
out,” coach Blake said. “We knew it was going to be a tough environment.”
The Indians got off to a slow start taking nearly seven minutes to score
their first points. Chipola gave up 12 first half turnovers to trail 32-26 at
the half. The Indians cut the lead to eight (58-50) late in the second half, but
never got any closer. Chipola
was led by guard Demetrious Floyd with 15 points.
Coach Blake said, “It’s tough to win a conference road game, but this can
be a great learning tool for our players and our coaching staff. We’ve got
a great team, but we weren’t ready for this game. We’re going back to work now
to do everything we can to get to where we need to be.”
Chipola (1-1) opened Conference play with an 80-63 win over Tallahassee.
Chris Thomas led the Indians with 21 points and 6 rebounds. Kruize Pinkins
scored 13. Carlos Morris and Cinmeon Bowers each scored 11. Demetrious Floyd
added 10.
The Chipola Lady Indians
also suffered a heart-breaking 62-61 loss at Northwest on Jan. 9.
After Lady Raider Luiana Livulo missed the front
end of a 1-and-1 with 17 seconds left to play, Chipola (16-2) got the rebound
and called timeout with 6.4 seconds left. Jasmine Crawford had a last second
shot for Chipola, but it fell short.
Chipola trailed 32-28 at the half, but tied the game three times in the
second period. Lady Indian Jade Givens knotted the score at 52 with seven
minutes to play.
A 3-pointer from Kristine Brance, who shot 5 of 14 from beyond the arc
for a team-best 15 points, made it 60-59, but Northwest’s Shae Nelson hit a key
with 1:41 to play.
Chipola shot only 30 percent from the floor, but hit 10 3-pointers to the
Lady Raiders’ 4. The Lady Indians were just 10 of 35 from beyond the arc despite
a hot start that gave them an early eight-point cushion.
The Lady Indians, (1-1) in league play, opened the season with a 74-63
win over Tallahassee on Jan. 5. Rayven Brooks, FCSAA Honorable Mention Player of
the week, led Chipola with 19 points including four three-pointers. Kristine
Brance had 18 with three from beyond the arc. Rhani Bell had 14 with four
three-pointers. Lashonda Littleton added 12.

NATURALIST JIM FOWLER TO VISIT
CHIPOLA COLLEGE WEDNESDAY
MARIANNA—Jim Fowler, one of the world's best known naturalists and
star of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom,
is scheduled to visit Chipola College Wednesday, Jan. 16. The exact time of his
arrival will be announced later.
Fowler will be accompanied by Bob Pforte, owner of a local Jeep,
Chrysler, Dodge dealership, and Jim Broadus, owner of the Bear Creek Feline
Center.
Pforte is coordinating with Chipola’s Automotive Technology program to
restore two jeep vehicles that were used on the Wild Kingdom television
series. Chipola Automotive professor John Gardner says, “We are excited that our
students will get the chance to work on some old vehicles with such a rich
history.”
Fowler has presented information about wildlife and wilderness to the
American public on television for more than 40 years. He first served with
Marlin Perkins as co-host and later became host of Mutual of Omaha's Wild
Kingdom, and also hosted Mutual of Omaha's Spirit of Adventure.
In addition to ongoing appearances on many network talk shows, Fowler was
the wildlife correspondent for NBC's Today Show since 1988. On behalf of Mutual
of Omaha, Fowler is actively involved in a nationwide conservation education
program conducted at the local community level. This includes personal
appearances in numerous cities each year to share conservation related messages.
Fowler graduated with degrees in zoology and geology from Earlham College
in Richmond, Indiana, and is internationally recognized as an authority on
predatory birds. He pursued a graduate degree by conducting the first studies of
the world's largest eagle, the harpy, in the wilds of the Amazon, and later
tracked the movements of the Andean condor in Peru. His studies were interrupted
by a career of travel and television. Since then he has worked with many
wildlife and conservation projects throughout the world.
Fowler's mission is to affect public attitudes so that they in turn will
help protect wildlife habitat and influence appropriate governmental policy. His
message is clear. "The continued existence of wildlife and wilderness is
important to the quality of life of humans. The challenge of the future is that
we realize we are very much a part of the earth's ecosystem, and learn to
respect and live according to the basic biological laws of nature."

TO PERFORM FOR CHIPOLA ARTIST SERIES
MARIANNA— The Davis and Dow jazz duo will perform for the Chipola College
Artist Series, Thursday, Feb.7, in the Chipola Center for the Arts.
The show of Jazz standards will include a request-by-favorites second
half in which the audience gets to pick blues selections.
The award-winning Davis and Dow jazz duo tackle jazz and pop standards
with a daring sense of abandon. Their style is deeply rooted in the classic jazz
tradition but with a playfulness that keeps the music fresh and fun. Their
arrangements are unique and inventive, always seeking a new approach to
everything they do.
Recognized as one of the finest and most versatile jazz singers of her
generation, Julie Davis is everything from scat-singer to balladeer. She grew up
listening to Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald and others on her
parents’ extensive vinyl collection. She is a stylist that seeks an original
twist on everything she performs.
Kelly Dow is a world-class guitarist whose primary influences are Joe
Pass, Jimmy Bruno, Django Reinhardt and the modern day European gypsy jazz
virtuosos. He blends Be-Bop, Blues, Flamenco and Classical styles to create a
strong individual sound delivered with sensitivity, power, and creativity.
Davis and Dow have toured Japan, London, and New York, composed and
performed original music for the TV show "FoodNation with Bobby Flay," and
produced "Divas of Jazz." Their latest CD "Naked" won Best Jazz Album-Florida
Music Awards, was featured in JazzTimes Magazine and voted Best Jazz Artists by
New Times Magazine.

BUSINESS SEMINARS SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola
College will offer a series of small business seminars in the coming months.
All seminars meet on Fridays, from 9:30 to 12:30 p.m., in Room M-108 of the
Chipola Business and Technology building.
“Steps to Starting a Small Business”
is Friday, Jan. 25. The seminar
will focus on organizational requirements, licensing, financial assessments,
insurance, marketing, loans, defining customers, location and employee
requirements.
“Business Plans” is
Feb. 15. The seminar will
help participants discover which business type is best suited for their
personality, and how to create a working business model to obtain financing and
create a successful business.
A free seminar, “What the Veterans’ Business Outreach Center Can Do for
You,” is
March 22. The VBOC helps create, develop, and retain veteran-owned
small business enterprises. The VBOC provides training through workshops,
counseling, assistance, and resource utilization services to Veterans,
Service-Disabled Veterans, Reservists, National Guard, and Active Duty business
owners and entrepreneurs. There is no charge for this seminar.
“Government Contracting” will meet
April 19. This workshop helps business owners identify
government agencies to which they can market their businesses. Participants will
discuss the effective marketing and ways to find a proposal opportunity, and how
to write a winning bid.
Cost of each seminar is $30. The first six Chipola students to sign

CHIPOLA HOMECOMING WEEK FEB. 4-9
MARIANNA—Chipola College will celebrate Homecoming 2013 from Feb. 4
through 9. The Indians will host Tallahassee Community College on
Saturday, Feb. 9. This year’s homecoming theme is “Chipola
Nation.”
Candidates for Mr. Chipola and Homecoming Queen will be introduced at 10
a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 30 in the Cafeteria. Voting for candidates will take
place Jan. 30-31. The top two freshmen vote winners (women and men) and the top
three sophomores or upper classman vote winners will be named to the Homecoming
Court. The sophomore or upper classmen winners will be crowned Homecoming Queen
and Mr. Chipola at the Homecoming game on Feb. 9.
SGA will sponsor a Building Decoration Contest among the campus
organizations to be judged at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5. Buildings must be
decorated on Monday, Feb. 4. Campus groups should contact Nancy Johnson
about the building their club would like to decorate.
Dress up days for the week include: Monday, Feb. 4, Camouflage Day;
Tuesday, Feb. 5, Nerd Day; Wednesday, Feb. 6, Blue and Gold Day; Thursday, Feb.

The Homecoming Talent show is Wednesday, Feb. 6, at 10:05 a.m. in the
Chipola Cultural Center (formerly known as the Arts Center). The contest
is open to any campus group or individual currently enrolled at Chipola.
Cash prizes will be awarded to: Best Overall - 1st, 2nd
and 3rd; Best Solo, Best Group and Best Band. Performances are
limited to 4 minutes. Sign-up deadline is Feb. 4 in the SGA Office in the

The Homecoming games between Chipola and Tallahassee are set for
Saturday, Feb. 9. The women game tips off at 5:30 p.m. Chipola president Dr.
Gene Prough and his wife, Priscilla, will host an Alumni Reception in the
Hospitality Room beginning at 6 p.m. All alumni, college retirees and friends of
the college also are invited. Former
Chipola Cheerleaders are the special guests at Homecoming. All former
Cheerleaders are invited to the Alumni reception and will be recognized during
the men’s game. The homecoming court also will be

SCIENCE ED MAJORS PRESENT AT FAST CONFERENCE
ST. PETERSBURG—Chipola College Science Education majors Travis Moore and
Joshua Jeffery presented a hands-on interactive lesson for teachers to use
forensic technology in the classroom, at the recent Florida Association of
Science Teachers (FAST) in St. Petersburg.
Chipola Science faculty Denise Freeman, Dr. Jocelyn Wahlgren and Dr.
Santine Cuccio, science education facilitator, accompanied the students to the
conference at which educators from Florida and other states conferred, planned
lessons and networked.
Students met with veteran teachers and attended demonstrations and
lectures on chemistry, magnetism, genetics, energy conservation and ecology.
Participating students stated that both their content knowledge and pedagogy
were reinforced and extended.
Conference vendors provided the students with sample textbooks,
instructional materials, CD’s and DVD’s to use in their classrooms.
This marks the seventh year that Chipola College has promoted the
professional development of students enrolled in bachelor’s programs by
attending the FAST Conference.
Students who attended the conference will share some of the outstanding
teaching strategies at the Chipola Future Educator’s Club Teacher Workshop on
Saturday, Feb. 2. The conference held on the Chipola campus is free to all
district educators.

MAJOR
LEAGUER JAYE CHAPMAN SPEAKS AT CHIPOLA FCA
MARIANNA—Former Chipola College and Mosley High School baseball standout
Jaye Chapman was the guest speaker at the Chipola Fellowship of Christian
Athletes’ Huddle on Jan. 17.
Chapman, who played at Chipola in 2005-06, played for seven years in the
Atlanta Braves farm system and was traded this past season to the Chicago Cubs.
He was called up in September of 2012 and finished the year on the Chicago Cubs
Major League roster, pitching in 12 games.
Chapman shared with the students his experiences in high school, college,
minor league baseball and this past season with the Cubs, saying, “God has
directed and guided every step along the way.” Through adversity and
success, Chapman talked about how God had made him a better pitcher and a better
witness for Christ. He encouraged the students to “Stay in the word, to
pray and to find other Christians to talk to and worship with.”
After his talk Chapman stayed for pictures and visited the dorm to talk
to members of the Chipola baseball team before heading home to Panama City.
Chapman is scheduled to report for Spring Training in Arizona in February.

TO PICK SONGS FOR CHIPOLA ARTIST SERIES EVENT
MARIANNA—Members of the audience will get to pick their favorite
selections for the Davis and Dow Jazz Quartet to perform at the Chipola Center
for the Arts, Thursday, Feb. 7. This is the third event in the Chipola College
Artist Series.
Davis and Dow tackle jazz and pop standards with a style that is deeply

WORKSHOP SET AT CHIPOLA COLLEGE
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Future Educators Club will host its sixth
Annual Teacher Workshop, Saturday, Feb. 2, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Teachers and students interested in a career in education are invited to attend.
Future educators currently enrolled at Chipola with the assistance of the
education faculty, staff, and education graduates will present the free workshop
for area educators and education students. The day will include various
sessions for elementary, middle, and high school teachers. The students will
present hands-on activities that can be used in the classroom along with samples
for teachers and education majors to take and use in their own classrooms.
The program will include presentations and strategies in Math, Science,
Reading, English, ESOL, and ESE. Sessions include: Getting outside of the
Basal with Reading Strategies; Classroom Management Strategies; How To Make
Science Come Alive; Using JR Tolkien to Teach Poetry and Imagery; Science
Experiments in the Primary Grades; Activities Using Patricia Palacco Texts;

for Students with ADD and Learning Disabilities.

MARIANNA—Chipola
College will offer a series of small business seminars in the coming months.
All seminars meet on Fridays, from 9:30 to 12:30 p.m., in Room M-108 of the
Chipola Business and Technology building.
“Steps to Starting a Small Business”
is Friday, Jan. 25. The seminar
will focus on organizational requirements, licensing, financial assessments,
insurance, marketing, loans, defining customers, location and employee
requirements.
“Business Plans” is
Feb. 15. The seminar will
help participants discover which business type is best suited for their
personality, and how to create a working business model to obtain financing and
create a successful business.
A free seminar, “What the Veterans’ Business Outreach Center Can Do for
You,” is
March 22. The VBOC helps create, develop, and retain veteran-owned
small business enterprises. The VBOC provides training through workshops,
counseling, assistance, and resource utilization services to Veterans,
Service-Disabled Veterans, Reservists, National Guard, and Active Duty business
owners and entrepreneurs.
“Government Contracting”
will meet April 19.

MARIANNA—Chipola hosts Northwest in a pair of big Panhandle Conference
games, Saturday, Jan. 26, in the Milton H. Johnson Health Center. The women’s
game tips off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.
The fourth-ranked Indians
(20-2, 3-2)
are back on track with two straight victories in conference play including a
77-74 win over Tallahassee on Tuesday, Jan. 22 and an 87-75 win over Gulf Coast
on Jan. 19. In the Tallahassee game,

Floyd led the Indians with 19 points.
Cinmeon
Bowers had 13 points and 11
rebounds. Torian
Graham scored 15. Carlos Morris had 12.
Chipola opened Conference play with an 80-63 win
over Tallahassee on Jan. 5.
Chipola lost a close 45-42 game to Pensacola on Jan. 15. The Indians were
led in scoring by Mistor Thomas with 11. Carlos Morris had 10. Chipola led 23-20
at the half.
In the Jan. 26 battle with the Raiders, the Indians are looking to avenge
their first loss of the season to top-ranked Northwest (80-65) on Jan. 9 in
Niceville.
The Lady Indians
(18-3, 3-2)
are in the thick of the conference race battling for one of three state
tournament berths from the Panhandle. On Saturday, Chipola is out to
avenge a close 62-61 loss to Northwest in their first meeting in Niceville on
Jan. 9. Jasmine Crawford had a last
second shot for Chipola, but it fell short.
The Lady Indians
lost a close 63-61 game in
Tallahassee on Tuesday, Jan. 22.
Rayven Brooks led Chipola with 24 points and 16 rebounds
before fouling out. Kristine Brance scored 14.
Jasmine Crawford added
12. Tallahassee jumped out to a 28-11 lead early in the first half, but Chipola
closed the gap to trail only 32-29 at the break.

19. Lady Indian Kristine Brance hit the
game-winning three-pointer with 0.6 seconds left. She had 13 points on the

The Lady Indians
recorded a 67-54 win over Pensacola
on Jan. 15. Givens led Chipola with 15 points and was five of five from the free
throw line with five assists. Crawford scored 13 including a pair of threes.

Both Chipola teams travel to Pensacola Feb. 2 before returning home to
host Gulf Coast on Tuesday, Feb. 5.

HEALTH FAIR SET AT CHIPOLA; ACCREDITATION ANNOUNCEMENT SET
MARIANNA—The Chipola College School of Health Sciences will host a Career
Fair on Monday, Feb. 4, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Representatives from
numerous area hospitals and health care facilities are scheduled to attend.
At 10 a.m. in the lobby of the School of Health Sciences,

CHIPOLA HOMECOMING WEEK FEB. 4-9
MARIANNA—Chipola College will celebrate Homecoming 2013 from Feb. 4
through 9. The Indians will host Tallahassee Community College on
Saturday, Feb. 9. This year’s homecoming theme is “Chipola
Nation.”
SGA will sponsor a Building Decoration Contest among the campus
organizations to be judged at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5. Buildings must be
decorated on Monday, Feb. 4. Campus groups should contact Nancy Johnson
about the building their club would like to decorate.
Dress up days for the week include: Monday, Feb. 4, Camouflage Day;
Tuesday, Feb. 5, Nerd Day; Wednesday, Feb. 6, Blue and Gold Day; Thursday, Feb.
7, Decade Day; Friday, Feb. 8, Sports Day.
The Homecoming Talent show is Wednesday, Feb. 6, at 10:05 a.m. in the
Chipola Cultural Center (formerly known as the Arts Center). The contest
is open to any campus group or individual currently enrolled at Chipola.
Cash prizes will be awarded to: Best Overall - 1st, 2nd
and 3rd; Best Solo, Best Group and Best Band. Performances are
limited to 4 minutes. Sign-up deadline is Feb. 4 in the SGA Office in the
Student Center.
The Homecoming games between Chipola and Tallahassee are set for
Saturday, Feb. 9. The women game tips off at 5:30 p.m. Chipola president Dr.
Gene Prough and his wife, Priscilla, will host an Alumni Reception in the
Hospitality Room beginning at 6 p.m. All alumni, college retirees and friends of
the college also are invited. Former
Chipola Cheerleaders are the special guests at Homecoming. All former
Cheerleaders are invited to the Alumni reception and will be recognized during
the men’s game. The homecoming court also will be
presented during halftime of the men’s game which begins at 7:30 p.m. The
Homecoming Queen and Mr. Chipola will be selected from the sophomore candidates.

BRAIN BOWLERS WIN SECTIONAL; QUALIFY FOR NATIONALS
MARIANNA—Three separate Chipola College Brain Bowl teams all qualified
for the community college national championship with wins in the North Florida
Sectional hosted by Chipola Jan. 25-26.
Chipola Blue received the number one overall seed by winning the North
Florida Sectional, posting an 8-0 record.
Chipola White received the number seven seed, finishing second at the
sectional, losing only to Chipola Blue.
Chipola Gold earned the number 18 seed, finishing tied for fourth at the
sectional. In all, 24 teams qualify for the national championship. The Chipola
teams will combine as two teams for the national championship.
Paul Kelson, Chipola’s standout player, continued to break records.
Playing solo as Chipola Blue, he recorded more power buzzes than any player in
history. He also broke the points per game scoring record, and the points per
bonus record.
Katelyn Miller and Blake Benton also had stellar individual performances,
finishing third and fifth respectively in individual scoring.
Last season, Chipola won the Florida College
System Activities Association Brain Bowl State Tournament for the fifth
straight year and finished as the top two-year college in the National
Academic Quiz Tournament Four-Year College Tournament for the second year in a
row.

TEACHER ED STUDENTS WIN AT STATE CONFERENCE
ORLANDO—Members of Chipola College’s Future Educators Club (FEC) won
three major awards at the Future Florida Educators of America (FFEA) Annual
State Conference. The students attended workshops and competed with other
post-secondary schools in state-wide competitions.
Chipola FEC students entered into four competitions - essay, speech,
lesson plan, and group display. Cierra Corbitt placed first in the Essay
Competition. Quay Pope won first place in the Speech Competition. Chipola also
finished second in the Group Display Competition.
FEC sponsor Casey Bush says, “Chipola was represented extremely well at
the conference. Our students showed a tremendous level of professionalism and
maturity. I am very proud of them and the work they put into this event.”
The Future Educators Club will host their Sixth Annual Teacher Workshop

TO PICK SONGS FOR CHIPOLA ARTIST SERIES EVENT
MARIANNA—Members of the audience will get to pick their favorite
selections for the Davis and Dow Jazz Quartet to perform at the Chipola Center
for the Arts, Thursday, Feb. 7. This is the third event in the Chipola College
Artist Series.
Davis and Dow tackle jazz and pop standards with a style that is deeply
rooted in the classical jazz tradition, but with a playfulness that keeps the
music fresh and fun. The second half of their concert will be a “Favorites
by Request” in which the audience will challenge them to perform some of the
jazz classics on the spot. To vote on their second half performance, jazz fans

Davis and Dow includes vocalist Julie Davis, who is recognized as one of
the finest and most versatile jazz singers of her generation. The accomplished
scat-singer and balladeer grew up listening to Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Ella
Fitzgerald and others on her parents’ extensive vinyl collection. She is a
stylist that seeks an original twist on everything she performs.
Kelly Dow is a world-class guitarist whose primary influences are Joe
Pass, Jimmy Bruno, Django Reinhardt and the modern day European gypsy jazz
virtuosos. He blends Be-Bop, Blues, Flamenco and Classical styles to create a
strong individual sound delivered with sensitivity, power, and creativity.
Davis and Dow have toured Japan, London, and New York, composed and
performed original music for the TV show "FoodNation with Bobby Flay," and
produced "Divas of Jazz." Their latest CD "Naked" won Best Jazz Album-Florida
Music Awards, was featured in JazzTimes Magazine and voted Best Jazz Artists by
New Times Magazine.

OFFER LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Criminal Justice Training Center will offer
an evening Law Enforcement Academy beginning March
13.
The program will meet weeknights from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. The course is 770
clock hours in length.
Candidates for the program must be at least 19 years of age and earn a
passing score on the Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT). Applicants
must have a standard high school diploma or its equivalent and must undergo a
medical physical examination, background check and drug screening. Financial
Assistance is available based upon need and eligibility.
The Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT) is offered at the
Public Service Building on Chipola Campus every Tuesday at 12:30. Cost of
the test is $45.

BASEBALL ALUMNI EVENT SET FOR FEB. 9
MARIANNA—Dozens of former Chipola College baseball players—including
Major League Homerun leader Jose Bautista—are expected to return to their alma
mater Feb. 9 for the sixth annual Chipola Baseball Alumni event.
Saturday’s events begin at 10 a.m. with Chipola vs. Walters State. An
Alumni Home Run Derby begins at 1 p.m. with an Alumni Game and Autograph session
to follow. Admission is $5 to the Chipola game and Homerun Derby.
There is also a $5 admission to the Autograph session.
A $100 a plate Pro Baseball Dinner and Auction is set for 6 p.m. at
Citizens Lodge in Marianna. The dinner includes a social hour, barbecue dinner
and auction. Country recording artist Billy Dean will perform a live concert
beginning at 8 p.m.
MLB Homerun leader (2010 and 2011) Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays
will be in attendance along with honorary Chipola alumnus Jeff Mathis of the
Miami Marlins. Several other former players are expected to attend.
