TROY, Ala. – Bobby Pierce, a former Chipola Junior College baseball
coach, has been named Troy State University’s new head baseball coach.
The
42-year-old, who built the
University of Alabama-Huntsville program from its infancy into a Division II
national power, was
introduced to a gathering of Troy State supporters on July 10. Pierce is
Troy’s 11th head coach since 1954. He was selected from among 118
applicants for the position.
“Troy
State is a great university with a tremendous baseball history,” Pierce said.
“I am very thankful for the opportunity to coach here and look forward to the
challenge of trying to take the program to places where people want to see it
go. Being part of the TSU family is exciting.”
Pierce posted a 276-108 record in seven seasons at UAH, guiding the
Chargers to the 2001 Gulf South Conference title and four NCAA regional
tournament appearances. He was named the GSC’s 2001 Coach of the Year with a
41-17 mark and a top 10 national ranking.
Prior
to his seven-year stay at UAH, Pierce served as an assistant coach at the
University of Alabama from 1990-94. Before that, he compiled a 259-95 career
mark in seven seasons as the head coach at Chipola Junior College in Marianna,
Fla.
A Marianna native, Pierce
originally enrolled at Troy State as a freshman in 1977. He transferred to South
Florida Community College in 1978 and then played the 1979 season at Wallace
College in Dothan. He signed with the University of Alabama in 1980. As a senior
captain in 1981, Pierce set numerous SEC and school records as an All-SEC
outfielder, along with being named to the Tide's All-Century team.
Following
his graduation in 1982, the 23-year-old became the youngest head coach in
Florida junior college history when he accepted the Chipola position. In his
first season, the school finished 41-15 and won the Florida state championship,
earning Pierce Florida Coach of the Year honors. Chipola won four Panhandle
Conference championships, earned five state tournament berths and won 40 or more
games four times under Pierce. In addition, 76 percent of his players signed
athletic scholarships at four-year institutions, 96 percent of which eventually
earned their degrees.
Following his career as an
assistant at Alabama, Pierce began building the UAH program from scratch. He
accepted the position in 1995, with the Chargers playing their first season in
1996. Pierce’s teams posted records of 37-16, 39-11, 41-17, 43-17, 42-18,
41-17 and 33-12 in his seven seasons, respectively, ranking him fifth among all
active Division II coaches with a .719 winning percentage.

MARIANNA—“Libraries
LINCC Lifelong Learners to Community Colleges” is an article written by Dr.
Carolyn E. Poole of Chipola Junior College that was published in the Spring 2002
issue of Florida Libraries, the
official journal of the Florida Library Association.
LINCC is the Library Information
Network for Community Colleges that provides statewide library access to all
Florida community college students.
The purpose of the article was to
illustrate how LINCC resources offered by community college libraries are
serving lifelong learning needs both on campus and off campus.
Citing many examples, she described ways in which students, faculty,
staff, administrators, community members, state citizens, regional residents,
and even global users are benefiting from the LINCC system.
Cooperative sharing of print and electronic information, customized
instruction for information literacy, and virtual reference services are only a
few of the contributions to learning facilitated by community college libraries.
Dr. Poole expects the new state priority of developing one common library
information portal within a seamless K-20 educational system to enhance lifelong
learning for all Floridians.

MARIANNA—Chipola Junior College Theater Coordinator Charles Sirmon
recently announced two big shows planned for the upcoming season.
Auditions for the comedy “You Can’t Take It With You,” are set for
Aug. 26 and 27 at 6 p.m. with performances Oct. 17-20.
The hit comedy by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman is one of the most
popular and successful plays of modern times.
At first the Sycamores only seem mad, but it is not long before we
realize that if they are mad, the rest of the world is madder.
In contrast to these delightful people are the unhappy Kirbys. This screwball comedy is all about eccentric families,
forbidden love, marriage, self-discovery. The zany Sycamore household is
presided over by Grandpa Vanderhof, a former businessman who has turned his back
on commerce to enjoy life. At the Sycamores, everyone does just what he or she
pleases. Penny Sycamore, Grandpa's daughter, has become a novelist because
someone delivered a typewriter to her home by mistake. Penny's husband makes
firecrackers in his basement with the help of Mr. DePinna, an iceman who showed
up at the Sycamore doorstep one day and never left. The one normal member of the
household is Alice Sycamore, in love with wealthy Tony Kirby. Naturally, when
the stuffy, aristocratic Kirbys come to the Sycamores for dinner, the event is a
disaster, capped with the arrest of everyone in the household. The movie by the same name and starring Jimmy Stewart earned
several Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director in the screen
adaptation by Frank Capra.
Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is Chipola’s big
spring musical. Auditions are set for Jan. 6 and 7 at 6 p.m. with performances
slated for March 12-16, 2003.
Twain’s timeless classic sweeps the audience down the mighty
Mississippi as the irrepressible Huck Finn helps his friend Jim, a black slave,
escape to freedom at the mouth of the Ohio River.
Their adventures along the way are hilarious, suspenseful and
heartwarming, bringing to life all of the favorite characters from the novel –
the Widow Douglas and her stern sister, Miss Watson; the uproarious King and
Duke, who may or may not be as harmless as they seem; Huck’s partner in crime,
Tom Sawyer, and their rowdy gang of pals; Huck’s drunken father, the sinister
Pap Finn; the lovely Mary Jane Wilkes and her trusting family.
Propelled by an award winning score from Roger Miller, the king of
country music, this jaunty journey provides a brilliantly theatrical celebration
of pure Americana. This long-running hit won seven Tonies including Best Musical
and Best Score.
Sirmon also has a yet-to-be-named Summer Children’s show in the works
for May of 2003.

MARIANNA--Chipola
Junior College alumnus Shelia Deason Shelton recently presented a gift to the
college that illuminates her love for Chipola and especially, her love of CJC
baseball.
Shelton,
who lives in Altha, created a one-of-a-kind stained glass rendering of the
college logo that is now a permanent feature of Chipola’s new
baseball/softball complex.
The
copper foil and lead design is framed in a 48” lighted window for motorists
and fans to enjoy as they pass the field on River Forest Road.
Shelton
invested more than 350 hours in the project, which is only her sixth since
taking up the hobby. She learned the art of stained glass from instructor Don
Caughran in a class offered through Chipola.
Shelton,
a 1966 Chipola graduate, has several connections to the CJC baseball program. Her son Brent served as an assistant to CJC head coach Jeff
Johnson. Her son Andy is currently serving in the same capacity. Coach Johnson
said, “The window adds a great touch of class to our facility. We really
appreciate everything that Mrs. Shelton has done for our program. She’s been a
great supporter.” Johnson reported that Shelton even travels with the Indians
to the state tournament where she launders and mends the players’ uniforms.
The
Shelton family also is very close to former Chipola baseball star Richie Smith
of Bristol, now a senior on the FSU baseball team.
When Shelton is not creating
stained glass works of art, she serves as Director of Special Programs for the
Liberty County School system.
