PLAYER PICKED FOR MLB ALL-STAR GAME
TORONTO, CANADA—Former Chipola baseball player Jose Bautista, an outfielder for
the Toronto Blue Jays, has been selected to play on the American League team in
the Major League Baseball All Star Game set for Tuesday, July 13.
Bautista is currently Major
League Baseball’s homerun leader with 21. He is batting .229 with 52 RBI’s. This
is his first All-Star nod. “This is uncharted water for me, but it feels good,”
said Bautista, who had a

ENDLESS SUMMER DINNER/DANCE
SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Celebrate the season with Chipola College’s “Endless Summer 2010”
dinner and dance, Saturday, Aug. 21, at the Marianna National Guard Armory.
Just as the Beach Boys’ “Endless Summer” album brings to mind a simpler time
with hits like “Surfin'
USA,” “Be
True to Your School” and “Fun,
Fun, Fun,” this event will reunite old Chipola friends and alumni for a
relaxing evening to benefit the college’s athletic programs.
Released in 1974,
“Endless Summer” spent 155 weeks on the
Billboard album chart, peaking at #1, and selling over three million copies.
Chipola College began in 1947 and has enjoyed more than 60 great years including
numerous state and national athletic titles, and thousands of individual success
stories among its graduates.
Robert Trammell, incoming president of the Chipola Appreciation Club and
longtime supporter, says, “While music has evolved from Big Band to Rock N’ Roll
and Hip Hop during Chipola’s 60-plus years, the bonds and friendships built at
this little college have remained constant.”
Trammell points to the commitment of alumni and supporters as the key to the
college’s success. “Without strong support from our people, Chipola Athletics
would be unable to perform at the national level,” he says.
The Villagers, a popular Chipola band from the 1960’s will provide the perfect
musical backdrop for the occasion. The Villagers reunited in 2008, four decades
after their last performance at the National Guard Armory. Villagers Cliff Ellis
of Chipley, Allen Myers of Malone, George Boyer of Port St. Joe, Walter Dover of
Quincy and Andy Murray of Chattahoochee, will perform their favorite tunes,
including their hit “Laugh It Off.” The concert is dedicated to Billy Bryan of
Bascom, one of the original members of the Villagers who passed away earlier
this year.
In addition to the Villagers, a professional DJ will spin dance tunes for the
remainder of the evening.
Tickets are $25 per person with a social hour at 6:30 p.m. Tables of eight are
available for $200. Summer casual attire is recommended. Local barbecue chef
Bobby Sims will prepare his famous, mouth-watering pulled-pork for the dinner.

MARIANNA—The Chipola College Board of Trustees along with college president Dr.
Gene Prough recently recognized Theatre Director Charles Sirmon and the
award-winning theatre program.
Chipola started this season off with “The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940,”
directed by Charles Sirmon.
Florida Community College Activities Association adjudication response states,
“This was a complex show with broad physical humor. Farce, though primary meant
as entertainment, because of its physical demands, is one of the most difficult
types of plays to direct from a blocking and picturization standpoint. Mr.
Sirmon did a superior job with this difficult production.” Rodney Whatley of PCC
wrote, “It was an evening filled with laughter and joy and amazement. I was
truly amazed at the comedic talent of some of the actors. The entire company was
amazing and truly entertaining.”
Chipola actors receiving special recognition were Aven Pitts, Ben Grande and
Sarah Lovins. Guest artist Chris Manasco also was recognized for comedic
choreography.
Chipola’s hit, spring musical “Bye Bye Birdie,” also earned top honors under the
direction of Sirmon. Ken McCulough, Professor of Theatre at Florida State
College, said “Sirmon kept the story clear in his blocking which used every inch
of the stage as well as the aisles for entrances/exits.”
Choreographer Chris Manasco, also was recognized by adjudicators, who wrote,
“The choreography for this show was outstanding and Manasco is obviously, an
incredible teacher.” Conductor Daniel Powell with guest pianist Christine Lauen
created excellent work and Sound Designer, Brenton Jones and musical Director
Angie White. McCulough says “Overall, a strong polished
production that played to an appreciative and packed audience. Even more
impressive, this occurred in a part of the country and in time that needs the
arts to not only to survive but also to thrive in order to become an essential
part of the local society. Experiences like this will ensure that happens.”
Chipola actors receiving special recognition were Austin Pettis, Aven Pitts, Ben
Grande, Cameron Hitchcock, Emily Harrison, Kayla Todd, Kyndall Covington and
Sarah Lovins, along with Designer/Technician Brenton Jones.

Drafts. He has coached three
All-ACC First Team selections, including Al Thornton, the 14th overall selection
in the 2007 NBA Draft, and Toney Douglas, a first round draft pick of the Los
Angeles Lakers.
