CHIPOLA FALLS TO NAVARRO IN NATIONAL BASEBALL TOURNEY
Navarro College (Texas) 3, Chipola College (Fla.) 2 (Box
Score)
GRAND JUNCTION, CO.—The Bulldogs of Navarro College and the Indians of Chipola
College gave the 8.718 fans in attendance at Suplizio Field a terrific show on
May 31. The Bulldogs edged the Indians 3-2 in a great matchup that featured
great pitching, defense and timely hitting.
Navarro's Tyler Carter provided
his team eight solid innings on the mound. He scattered nine hits, struck out
six and gave just one free pass (BB). He allowed two earned runs.
Chipola's Johnny Cristi was
effective early but gave up a single run in three consecutive innings and gave
way to Matt Marsh in the sixth inning. Marsh was effective in relief, allowing
no hits or runs.
The Bulldogs got on top 2-0 after
picking up a run in the third off a Christian Stringer sac fly RBI that scored
Brett Doe. Navarro got its second run in the fourth frame when DH David Harris
legged out an infield single with two outs that scored JT Files.
Chipola got on the board with a
run in the fifth after Austin Southall doubled to lead off the inning and then
advanced to third on a Tyrone Dawson single. An error allowed Southall to score
but a play at the plate and a groundout killed a potential Chipola rally.
The Bulldogs picked up another run
in the bottom of the fifth via solo home run from Weston Hall to make it 3-1
Navarro.
Chipola narrowed the score to 3-2
after picking up a run in the seventh. The Indians had the bases loaded with no
outs and hit into a double play, which scored one, and then grounded out a
second time to leave the tying run on third base.
Justin Thomas came on for Navarro
to close out the game in the ninth after Carter gave up a single to Edgar
Delgado to lead off the inning. Tyrone Dawson then moved Delgado to second on a
sac bunt. A balk by Thomas put Delgado just 90 feet away from tying up the game
with one out, but Thomas quickly struck out Sasha LaGarde and Michael Revell to
end the game.
Navarro advances to face Central Arizona tomorrow night at 7:30 in the winner's
bracket. Chipola will face Iowa Western, Wednesday, June 1, at 2 p.m. (CST) in
an elimination game.

INDIANS FINISH FIFTH
IN NATIONAL BASEBALL TOURNEY
GRAND JUNCTION, CO.—The Chipola
Indians finished fifth in the NJCAA National Baseball Tournament on June 1.
It was the Indians’ third trip to the
national tourney in the last five years including a National Championship in
2007.
Chipola’s first game in the tournament was one for the record
books. In a game that featured 32 combined runs, 30 hits, 12 errors and a hidden
ball trick, Chipola outlasted Grayson 19-13. Despite committing eight errors in
the game, Chipola regrouped and recharged their effort by turning to the bat and
arm of Derrick Pitts.
Pitts tied NJCAA DI JUCO World Series records for hits and RBI's in
a tournament game. He was a perfect 6-for-6 at the dish with 9 RBI's and had
three doubles.
Grayson County led the game 12-9 heading into the top of the eighth
inning. The Chipola bats finally came alive in the bottom half of the 8th,
scoring 10 runs to seal the win. Pitts came on to close it out for the Indians
and picked up the win by tossing one and one-third innings and striking out two.
Navarro and Chipola gave the 8,000 fans at the National Tournament
a terrific show on May 31. The Bulldogs edged the Indians 3-2 in a great matchup
that featured great pitching, defense and timely hitting. Chipola's Johnny
Cristi was effective early but gave up a single run in three consecutive innings

Johnson said. “I’m proud of these kids for the strides they made.
From where they started the year to finish No. 5 in the nation, that’s nothing
to be ashamed of. I’m proud of the job that the coaches and the players did.
They all worked their butts off. I’m proud of how far this team came in the last
month and a half or so.”

Chipola Has
Lowest Course Withdrawal Rate in Florida
MARIANNA—According to statewide
data, Chipola College has the lowest course withdrawal rate among colleges in
the State College System.
The report, released in March,
shows that only 6.3% of Chipola’s students withdrew from a set of monitored
classes in the last three years, compared to the state average of 11.3%.
According to the report, the analysis was undertaken because when students fail
to complete a course, it costs the student and the state money, reduces
available classroom space, and increases the length of time required for the
student to graduate. While many withdrawals are necessary for personal and
academic reasons, excessive withdrawals pose a significant burden on the
student, the college, and the state.
The data used for the analysis included all college preparatory and college
credit courses offered from 2007-2008 to 2009-2010 in the state of Florida.
There were 3,157 courses with 6,608,926 enrollments. The list of courses was
then limited to those with at least 3,000 course enrollments system-wide. This
reduced the number of courses to 213 of the most commonly offered courses
representing 89% of course enrollments in all 28 colleges. The data focused on
courses with high withdrawal percentages since they represent the classes which
students struggle to complete.
Between 2007-2008 and 2009-2010, there were 668,850 withdrawals, representing
11.3% of the total course enrollments. Chipola College had the lowest percentage
at 6.3%.
The report also included the
five courses with the highest percentage of withdrawals at each college. The
five courses with the highest withdrawal rates at Chipola are: Anatomy and
Physiology I (BSC 2093), Elementary Spanish I (SPN 1120), Calculus with Analytic
Geometry II (MAC 2312), Chemistry (CHM 1045) and Introduction to Earth Science
(ESC 1000).
Data from the study was
published in Chipola FACTS, a monthly factsheet produced jointly by the Chipola
Offices of Development and Planning and Information Systems/ Technology. The
purpose of Chipola FACTS is to facilitate good-decision making by publishing
college-related data.
