Chipola To Meet OW In State Title Game
MARIANNA—Freshman Casey Mitchell scored 17 points in the first half, connecting on five 3pt field goals as the #2 Chipola Indians ran away with an 85-62 victory over Indian River on Friday night in the semi-finals of the FCCAA State Tournament. Mitchell, who ended the night with an 8 of 11 shooting performance (6 of 9 3pt), led all scorers with a game high 22 points. “I thought our energy and pressure created easy scoring opportunities during the opening ten minutes of the game,” said Chipola head coach Greg Heiar. “We were able to get some open looks and Casey did a great job of knocking them in.” Chipola, who shot just 2 of 16 from the 3pt line in the opening round of the tournament, went 37% from deep, connecting on 10 of 27 from beyond the arc. The Indians relied on their defense, creating 14 first half turnovers by Indian River, helping Chipola jump out to an early 38-18 lead during the first 12 minutes of the game.
“We did a really good job of slowing down their guards,” said Heiar. “We focused on keeping them out of the paint and making them shoot contested jumpers.”
The River, who entered the game averaging 79 points per contest, shot just 38% from the field while being harassed for 25 turnovers on the night.
Sophomore Malik Alvin scored 14 points and sophomore Mario Edwards added 11 points, helping Chipola improve to 31-1 on the season.
Sophomore Clevin Hannah and freshman Vernon Teel added 9 and 8 points, respectively. Teel also finished the night with a game high 5 assists and pulled down 5 rebounds for the Indians.
With the win, Chipola moves on to the Championship game of the FCCAA State Tournament, where they will play fellow Panhandle rival #6 ranked Okaloosa-Walton (27-3).
The two teams have previously met this season three times, with each team holding serve on their home court.

Graceville Lions establish Wilmer "Slim" Smith Scholarship
GRACEVILLE—Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Barber recently presented a check to the Chipola College Foundation to establish the Graceville Lions Club Wilmer "Slim" Smith Memorial Scholarship Endowment.
Mr. Smith or "Slim" as he was affectionately known was born on August 19, 1922, and lived his entire life in the Graceville-Campbellton area.
"Slim" was married to the former Lelah Womble of Madrid, AL, for more than 50 years. He served his country courageously during the World War II European Campaign. After military service, he owned and operated a welding shop in Campbellton for over 40 years. He also taught a welding class at Chipola in the late 1960's.
“Slim” was a member of the Graceville Lions for many years, serving the club in various capacities. His contribution to the Lions Annual Pancake Supper will be greatly remembered. This event was synonymous with Mr. Smith and was a source of great joy for him. He was a person of great character and an asset to the community and the Graceville Lions.
He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Graceville, where he served as deacon. '"Slim" passed away Dec. 8, 2001.
The Graceville Lions Club - Wilmer "Slim" Smith Scholarship will provide partial tuition and/or books to a Graceville High or Poplar Springs High graduate with a minimum 2.75 GPA. PENDERGRASS NAMED TO FCCAA HALL OF FAME
MARIANNA—Alice Pendergrass, Coordinator for the State Basketball Tournament, was named to the FCCAA Women’s Coaches Hall of Fame during a ceremony on March 7.
For more than a dozen years, Alice Pendergrass has been the “go-to girl” for the FCCAA State Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament.
In her role as Tournament Coordinator, Alice has her hands in every aspect of the event. But her job begins long before the first tip-off and extends well past the trophy presentations.
She personally recruits dozens of college and community volunteers to serve on 23 tournament committees. As tournament liaison to the Chipola Appreciation Club, she coordinates community volunteers and advance ticket sales.
Her financial responsibilities include everything from ticket sales to bill-paying. Following the event, she creates the Final Report which covers all financial, statistical and awards data.
Though the work is demanding, Alice admits that it’s always fun. “We have a great time working with the players, coaches and state officials,” Alice said. “All our guests say they appreciate our hospitality and hometown atmosphere. We have great crowds for all the games and many of the coaches and players tell us they’ve never been treated better.”
Alice has worked at Chipola for 18 years and has served as Tournament Coordinator for 12 of those. When she’s not working on the tournament, she serves as a Departmental Staff Assistant for Chipola’s Workforce Development division.
Alice and her husband Dwain have four children and nine grandchildren.

CHIPOLA ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS ANNOUNCED
MARIANNA—Scholarship audition dates and deadlines for music, art, theatre, show choir and jazz band at Chipola College for 2008-2009 academic year have been announced.
Music and Theatre Scholarship Audition dates are March 20, and April 24. Visual Art Application and portfolio deadline is April 18. High School graduates with acceptable academic records and music, theatre, and art aptitude who plan to pursue studies as music, theatre or art majors are eligible to apply for scholarships.
Scholarships also are available for Show Choir, Jazz Band, and Chamber Chorus.
Show Choir auditions are Tuesday, April 22, at 4 p.m. in the Chipola Arts Center. Students wishing to be considered for scholarship consideration in the Jazz Band and/or Chamber Chorus should contact Joan Stadsklev, Director of Fine and Performing Arts.
Scholarships in various amounts, up to full tuition and fees, are awarded on the basis of talent and academic record. Students with financial need may seek additional assistance through the college’s Office of Financial Aid and the Chipola Foundation.

CHIPOLA ARTS GROUP TO MEET IN CHIPLEY MARCH 18
MARIANNA—The Chipola Regional Arts Association (CRAA) will hold its March meeting on Tuesday, March 18, at the Chipley Women's Club on Fifth Street at beginning 11:30 a.m.
As one of its many projects, the CRAA awards $200 mini-grants to school teachers in the Chipola District that make application to enhance their arts programming. In past years, 7-10 mini-grants have been awarded annually. This year, all 23 grants were funded thanks to the financial support CRAA receives through its annual fundraising campaign which takes place throughout the Chipola District.
CRAA programs for March will feature seven of the teachers located closer to Chipley and the remainder will share at the April 15 meeting to be held at Jim’s Buffet in Marianna. Teachers will share how they used their grant monies to further arts education in their respective schools.
Teachers presenting at the March 18 meeting will be Richard Davenport and Luwana Locke from Chipley High, Karen Bouton and Roberta Newell from Graceville Elementary, Heather Howell from Poplar Springs Elementary/Middle, and High School, and Christine Lauen and Vicki Steverson from Bonifay Elementary.
Visitors are welcome. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. catered by the Chipley Women's Club.

CHIPOLA BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL AT HOME TUESDAY
MARIANNA—Chipola baseball hosts Wallace-Dothan at 5 p.m., Tuesday, March 11, in the final pre-conference game before opening league play at Tallahassee on March 14.
The Indians return home Saturday, March 15, to host Tallahassee at 2 p.m.
Chipola split a twin bill with Meridian, 10-6 and 4-2 on March 9. Kyle Regnault earned the win in relief of Ben Jeffers in game one. Jason Townsend was the losing pitcher in game two.
The defending state and national champion Indians are 23-6-1 on the year.

The (20-4) Lady Indians softball team host Hartland College at 4 p.m., Tuesday, March 11.

CHIPOLA BEATS OW FOR THIRD TIME TO TAKE STATE TITLE
MARIANNA—Sections of fans around the Milton Johnson Center gave a standing ovation with every move by the Chipola College men's basketball team. There was still plenty of time left, but there was no stopping the celebration.
The fans were deafening at the buzzer when it signaled that Chipola had captured its fourth Florida junior-college championship in the last five seasons. The Indians staved off nemesis Okaloosa-Walton College 89-78 in the title game on March 8.
For the third time in four games, the No. 2 Indians were just a little bit better than the No. 6 Raiders.
The Indians led 48-44 at halftime and 74-71 before outscoring the Raiders 15-7 over the final four minutes of the game. "It feels really good," fourth-year Chipola coach Greg Heiar said after the win, his third state title as the Indians head coach and fourth as a member of the staff. "To do it against such great competition in the best league in the country is just really, really good. OW coach Bruce Stewart has a tremendous team. They made us work hard for everything we got tonight."
Chipola defeated OW 56-52 and 90-81 in its two regular season home meetings with the Raiders and lost 68-59 in Niceville.
The Indians were somewhat sluggish in their opening round win over Central Florida before coming back with a dominant performance in an 85-62 win over Indian River Friday night.
Chipola saved perhaps its best game for last, shooting nearly 45 percent from the floor, making ten 3-pointers and dishing out 22 assists to only 10 turnovers, while holding the Raiders to just 33 percent shooting.
"I told them it was stick and move today," Heiar said. "It's not about points. It's not about stats. It's not about minutes. It's about stick and move. Boxers stick and move and it's how a boxer becomes a champion. They are champions."
The Indians played like a team that wouldn't be denied for the last 20 minutes, turning back every run that the Raiders made. But the partisan crowd knew it wasn't over even though their teams held a lead that proved insurmountable for the Raiders.
Chipola's star sophomore Mario Little was named Tournament MVP with 24 points and seven rebounds on the night. Little said that, despite his team's great balance and depth, he knew he would have to come up with a big night for his team to prevail. "I knew I had to assert myself offensively for us to win," he said. "I hadn't been playing that good in the tournament before tonight, but I knew I was going to have to assert myself if we were going to get it done."
Little only scored nine of his 24 points in the second half, but the three he put in late in the game after OW's Tay Waller cut the Chipola lead to 78-74 with 2:49 to play may have been final nail in the coffin.
"That was the biggest shot of the game, no doubt," Heiar said. After the Indians got a stop on OW's next possession, Vernon Teel made two free throws with 1:45 to play to give the Indians an 83-74 lead. A 3-point play by Keith Ramsey with 1:34 briefly gave the Raiders life again, making it 83-77. That was as close as OW would get, as the Indians successfully navigated their way through the Raiders' full-court pressure, getting to the foul line eight times in the final 1:30, making six to seal the win.
"This is my first title ever, so I feel great," Chipola forward Gary Flowers said after the game. Flowers didn't have his typical impact on the game offensively and on the boards, collecting just eight points and three rebounds.
However, the long-armed, 6-foot-8-inch freshman more than made up for it by dominating the defensive end of the court, registering five steals and five blocks while altering several other OW shots in the paint.
Flowers said he got some encouragement from Heiar at intermission. "Coach really got on me at halftime. He said I was too worried about offense and not enough about defense," he said. "That's why I came out with a defensive mindset in the second half and focused on making plays defensively. That's how you get five blocks and five steals."
The game featured nine ties in a fast-paced first-half that featured 12 made 3-pointers combined, six from each team, as the two powerhouses traded punches for the first 20 minutes.
Chipola slowly started to separate in the second half, extending to a nine-point advantage at 59-50 on a Casey Mitchell three at the 13 minute mark. OW kept close, converting free throws to keep contact with the Indians. The Raiders made 8-of-9 at the charity stripe during a 2:38 stretch to pull to within four at 71-67 with 6:26 to play. Two more free throws by Josh Hunter with 3:41 to play made it a 3-point Chipola lead at 74-71.
A tip-in by Mitchell made it 76-71, then Malik Alvin got fouled on a breakout after a Flowers block and made two free throws to make it 78-71 with 3:10 to play.
But the sharp shooting Waller put in a fading triple to bring the Raiders to within four with just under three minutes to play, for the moment making it seem as though the game was destined to come down to the last shot.
Little's 3-point answer quashed that notion and vanquished the season of a Raiders team that lost only four times all season, three coming to Chipola on the Indians' home floor.
Chipola improves to 32-1 on the season and next travels to Hutchinson, Kansas, March 18-22, for the national tournament.
At least one Indian said that coming up short in Kansas would make Saturday night's celebration an afterthought. "It wouldn't mean as much, not at all," Flowers said after the game. "It would just be one step along the way. We're focusing on going to Kansas, taking four straight games and getting us the ring, the big ring."

Proteus 7—a group of brass, winds and percussion—breathes new life into music with their dynamic, free-ranging approach with an eclectic mix of music from Bernstein’s Candide to West Side Story and the Pink Panther.
Members of Proteus 7 perform on Broadway and record for television and motion pictures and have been nominated for Emmy and Grammy awards. All have played with major symphony orchestras throughout the world. Their programs are as diverse as their individual talents, balancing intricate works of Baroque masters in tandem with contemporary classical and jazz counterparts, plus everything in between.
Trumpeter and Emmy award-winning composer Anthony DiLorenzo has performed as soloist with the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Boston Pops. Anthony has written music for movie trailers for more than 70 films including 101 Dalmatians, Forrest Gump, Toy Story, and Crimson Tide.
Trumpeter Geoffrey Hardcastle is active as both a performer and teacher. He has performed with the Akron Symphony, the Canton Symphony, the Ohio Chamber Orchestra and the Cleveland Ballet and Opera orchestras.
Considered one of America's finest trombonists, Scott Hartman's American solo appearances with orchestra include concerts with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra. He has appeared on Today and GoodMorning, America, and was featured on the PBS documentary Sounding Brass.
Trombonist Hans Bohn is a member of the Boston Ballet Orchestra, Boston Lyric Opera, Handel and Haydn Society, Emmanuel Music and the new music ensemble, Boston Modern Orchestra Project. Hans performs regularly with the Boston Pops and the Esplanade Pops and can be heard on several Boston Pops recordings.
Matthew Gaunt is an active performer with orchestras such as the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, Boston Ballet, New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra, Rhode Island Philharmonic as well as the Vermont, Springfield and Portland Symphonies.
Multi-instrumentalist and composer Paul McCandless is credited with more than 200 albums and performances with such musicians as Wynton Marsalis, Pat Metheny, Al Jarreau, Bruce Hornsby, Tony Furtado, and the String Cheese Incident. He won a 1996 Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones.
Percussionist Feza Zweifel is a founding member of Proteus 7 and co-founder of Burning River Brass. Both groups concertize extensively and are Dorian recording artists. Zweifel appeared frequently with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Philadelphia Opera and Concerto Soloists. Feza serves as principal percussionist of the Cleveland Opera.

CHIPOLA TO HOST CULTURAL CELEBRATION
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Social and Behavioral Sciences Department will host a “Cultural Celebration!” event, Wednesday, April 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., in front of the Milton H. Johnson Health Center on College Street.
Dr. Willie Spires, Director of the Social and Behavioral Sciences department, said, “The purpose of the event is to increase awareness of the many diverse cultures in our world as we become more global within the many sociological institutions.”
Students in Spires’ Contemporary Sociology course are highlighting the seven continents by selecting various cultures within their continent. There will be entertainment including music, dancing, and marital arts demonstrations to illustrate each of the cultures along with displays of various cultures.
For the inaugural year, the Chipola students are inviting the community and the sixth grade classes from the surrounding counties.
“Chipola students are very enthusiastic about this event,” said, Dr. Spires. “The visiting students and other guests will gain an invaluable cultural and educational experience in a fun way. We plan to make this an annual event.”

Educator’s Workshop Held On Chipola Campus
MARIANNA—Some 20 area teachers and students attended a recent workshop hosted by the Chipola College Future Educator’s Club (FEC).
Chipola’s teacher education students and faculty presented activities for teachers to use in their classrooms. The workshop centered on mathematics and science; however, all activities displayed could be adapted to any classroom.
Chipola students presenting included Kari Adams, Nathan Day, Rachel Edminson, Chris Eby, Lori Holland, Stephanie McIntosh, Amanda Mullins, Danny Rutherford, Jessica Sloan and Debbie Yglesia. FEC president, Amanda Mullins, said, “Participants surveyed enjoyed the workshops and gave many suggestions for future topics.”
The FEC plans to hold the workshop annually to provide in-service points for area teachers.
Chipola offers the following bachelor’s degrees in education: Elementary Education, Exceptional Student Education, Middle School Mathematics Education (5-9), Mathematics Education (6-12), Middle School General Science Education (5-9), Biology Education (6-12).

TALLAHASSEE PHOTOGRAPHER’S WORK ON DISPLAY AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—An exhibit entitled, “Through my Looking Glass” by Tallahassee photographer Michele Beaudin will be displayed March 17 through April 28 in the gallery of the McLendon Fine Arts Building on the Chipola College campus.
The exhibit is open weekdays, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Beaudin’s award-winning photography and extensive collection of published articles have a presence in three continents. While she spent many years working and living abroad, she now shares her time between Florida and Alabama.
As a writer and photographer, Beaudin has been documenting her own adventures as well as her family and friends’ lives on camera since she was a child. While pursuing a career in international business and technology, she freelanced as a photo-journalist for various newspapers and magazines. Her recent experience in Africa, as part of the Peace Corps, served as an inspiration to dedicate her life creating and sharing beauty as a professional artist.
A three-time mother and five-time grandmother, Michèle is an active member of the art community and of organizations, such as the League of Women Voters. She also volunteers as a Guardian ad Litem for children in dependency cases.

CHIPOLA PLAYS TUESDAY IN NJCAA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT
MARIANNA—The Chipola College men’s basketball program has eleven national tournament appearances—more than any other Florida community college team—but the national title has eluded the Indians for 61 years.
Chipola (29-1) has a great opportunity to finish on top this year. The Indians play unranked Seward County (KS) in the first round of the National NJCAA Men’s Tournament, Tuesday, March 18, at 8:30 p.m. (CST).
Chipola will need four wins to bring home the national championship trophy. The title game is set for Saturday, March 22, at 8 p.m.
Chipola captured its fourth Florida/Region VIII championship in the last five seasons with an 89-78 win over Okaloosa-Walton on March 8.
The Indians are led by Panhandle Player of the Year Mario Little, who also won tournament MVP honors with 24 points in the title game. He will play at the University of Kansas next season.
Seward captured the NJCAA Region VI championship with a 71-61 win over Cowley College. Seward is led by sophomore Darko Cohadarevic (tournament MVP) who scored 25 points on 11-of-17 shooting and 10 rebounds.
Chipola finished runner-up in the 2007 National Tournament, matching the Indians’ other second place finish in 1975.

MARIANNA—The Chipola College Chapter of Mu Alpha Theta Honorary Mathematical Society recently inducted new members.

Mu Alpha Theta is a national honorary mathematics club for students who have maintained a “B” average in at least two math courses above the level of College Algebra and who have an overall “B” average in all college work. Most of the new initiates plan to major in engineering or pre-med.

HOLMES COUNTY’S DOCKERY REPEATS AS CHIPOLA 3-POINT CHAMP
MARIANNA—Brock Dockery of Holmes County High School defended his title as Champion of Chipola College’s Fifth Annual High School Three-Point Shooting Championship.
Joe Garner of Ponce De Leon High won second place and Pierre Speights of Cottondale took third.
Dockery and Garner each made 11 of 15 shots in the finals, but Dockery won the tie-breaker with 8 of 10 shots.
Other participants were: Cameron Dozier of Graceville, T.J. Smith of Malone, Alex Baxley of Sneads, Lexus Roulhac of Vernon, Clayton Ward of Bethlehem, Kevin Saldonia of Altha and Derick Addison of Poplar Springs.
Kayla Walker of Graceville High won the championship in the women’s division. Jennifer Grant of Ponce De Leon won second place. Other participants were: Tara Thompson of Bethlehem, Shay Wright of Poplar Springs, Keiysa Paul of Cottondale, Latoshia Hall of Malone, Keela McKay of Marianna, Mattie Collins of Sneads and Shanida Thomas of Chipley.
All boys and girls high school teams from the Chipola district were invited to send their best three-point shooter to the competition.
Travelling championship trophies for the men’s and women’s divisions will be housed in their respective school’s trophy cases during the coming year.

CHIPOLA LOOSES FIRST ROUND GAME IN NATIONAL TOURNEY
HUTCHINSON, KS—The Chipola College Indians lost to the Seward County Community College Saints, 84-90, in a first round game at the National Junior College Athletics Association Basketball Tournament on Tuesday, March 18, in the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
Vernon Teel led Chipola with 19 points. Mario Little scored 15. Casey Mitchell scored 14. Clevin Hannah scored 10.
Chipola’s overall record stands at 32 – 2.
Chipola will play Shelton State at Noon on Thursday in the consolation bracket.

CHIPOLA TO HOST STATE BRAIN BOWL MARCH 27-29
MARIANNA—Some of the best minds and fastest buzzers in the state will visit Chipola College March 27-29 when the college hosts the 27th Annual Florida State Brain Bowl Tournament. This is the first time that Chipola has hosted the event.
According to Chipola brain bowl coach Stan Young, “The purpose of FCCAA Brain Bowl competition is to recognize outstanding student academic achievement, to promote community interest in academic excellence in the community colleges, and to foster relations among faculty and students.”
Four regional tournaments were held in February to determine the participants for the 2008 State Tournament. Ten community college teams have qualified for the tournament: Brevard, Broward, Chipola, Indian River, Lake-Sumter, Manatee, Okaloosa-Walton, Pasco-Hernando, Pensacola and Valencia. The teams will compete head-to-head in a round robin format to determine the state champion.
Defending state champion Okaloosa-Walton has won the championship three of the last four years.
Host school Chipola is enjoying a great season with three tournaments wins and at least a semi-final finish in every junior college tournament they have entered.
Chipola recently won the Georgia National Academic Quiz Tournament Sectional in Athens, Georgia, a qualifier for the national tournament to be held in St. Louis, Missouri, April 11-12. Chipola will be one of only eight community colleges—including defending national champion Valencia—competing at the tournament.

CHIPOLA SHOW CHOIR JAZZMATAZZ TICKETS ON SALE
MARIANNA—Tickets for the Chipola Show Choir’s Jazzmatazz go on sale March 24.
Three performances of the annual song and dance show will be presented April 18-20 in the Chipola Theatre. The Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7 p.m., with the Sunday, April 20, show at 2 p.m.

Town Hall Meeting on Underage Drinking set at Chipola
MARIANNA—Chipola College will host a Town Hall Meeting on Underage Drinking, Tuesday, March 25, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., in Jackson Hall (Z116).
Chipola’s Phi Theta Kappa, Honors program, and the Pre-Med Society are joining with the Panhandle Area Health Network to sponsor the event.
Bill Janes, Director of Drug Policy for the State of Florida is the guest speaker. A panel with representatives from the Sheriff’s Office, State’s Attorney’s Office, Jackson County School Board, CARE, and Chipola will field questions after Janes’ presentation.

MARIANNA— Proteus 7 will perform favorites from Bach to Bacharach, Tuesday, March 25, in the final offering of the 2008 Chipola College Artist Series.
A limited number of tickets—$12 for adults and $8 for ages 18 and under—are on sale in the Chipola Business Office.
Proteus 7—a group of brass, winds and percussion—breathes new life into music with their dynamic, free-ranging approach with an eclectic mix of music from Bernstein’s Candide to West Side Story and the Pink Panther.
Members of Proteus 7 perform on Broadway and record for television and motion pictures and have been nominated for Emmy and Grammy awards. All have played with major symphony orchestras throughout the world. Their programs are as diverse as their individual talents, balancing intricate works of Baroque masters in tandem with contemporary classical and jazz counterparts, plus everything in between.
Trumpeter and Emmy award-winning composer Anthony DiLorenzo has performed as soloist with the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Boston Pops. Anthony has written music for movie trailers for more than 70 films including 101 Dalmatians, Forrest Gump, Toy Story, and Crimson Tide.
Trumpeter Geoffrey Hardcastle is active as both a performer and teacher. He has performed with the Akron Symphony, the Canton Symphony, the Ohio Chamber Orchestra and the Cleveland Ballet and Opera orchestras.
Considered one of America's finest trombonists, Scott Hartman's American solo appearances with orchestra include concerts with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra. He has appeared on Today and GoodMorning, America, and was featured on the PBS documentary Sounding Brass.
Trombonist Hans Bohn is a member of the Boston Ballet Orchestra, Boston Lyric Opera, Handel and Haydn Society, Emmanuel Music and the new music ensemble, Boston Modern Orchestra Project. Hans performs regularly with the Boston Pops and the Esplanade Pops and can be heard on several Boston Pops recordings.
Matthew Gaunt is an active performer with orchestras such as the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, Boston Ballet, New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra, Rhode Island Philharmonic as well as the Vermont, Springfield and Portland Symphonies.
Multi-instrumentalist and composer Paul McCandless is credited with more than 200 albums and performances with such musicians as Wynton Marsalis, Pat Metheny, Al Jarreau, Bruce Hornsby, Tony Furtado, and the String Cheese Incident. He won a 1996 Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones.
Percussionist Feza Zweifel is a founding member of Proteus 7 and co-founder of Burning River Brass. Both groups concertize extensively and are Dorian recording artists. Zweifel appeared frequently with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Philadelphia Opera and Concerto Soloists. Feza serves as principal percussionist of the Cleveland Opera.

MARIANNA—Chipola College will host a pair of free concerts, April 10 and April 13.

CHIPOLA COACH JEFF JOHNSON PICKS UP 400TH CAREER WIN
MARIANNA—Chipola College baseball coach Jeff Johnson celebrated his 400th career win on Friday, March 14 with a 6-4 win over Tallahassee.
Johnson is in his 12th season at the helm of the Chipola baseball program. He led the Indians to a national championship and state championship in 2007.
Under his direction, Chipola has advanced to the state tournament seven times. The Indians finished second in the state tournament in 2005, 2002 and 2001, third in 1998, and among the top four in 2006. Chipola has won the baseball Panhandle Conference pennant six times in the last seven years.
Coach Johnson has guided more than 75 players on to professional baseball or to four-year college programs.

HUTCHINSON, KS—The Chipola College Indians
lost to Seward County Community College, 90-84, in overtime in the first round
of the NJCAA Basketball Tournament on Tuesday, March 18, in the Hutchinson
Sports Arena.
Vernon Teel led Chipola with 19 points. Mario Little scored 15.
Casey Mitchell scored 14. Clevin Hannah scored 10 including a three pointer in
the last seconds of regulation to send the game into overtime.
Free throws proved to be the difference in the game. Seward scored 40 points on 49 free throw attempts. Chipola had only 23 free throws connecting on 14.
Chipola (32–2) will play Shelton State at noon, Thursday, March 20. A win Thursday would put the Indians in a Friday game. A Friday win would move the Indians to a Saturday game. Seventh place is the best the Indians can hope for in the consolation bracket of the double-elimination tournament.
The Indians made it to the championship game of last year’s tourney finishing as runner-up.

CHIPOLA FRESHMAN NAMED WBCA ALL-AMERICAN
ATLANTA - Chipola College freshman Latoya Williams has been named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) State Farm 2008 Junior College/Community College (JC/CC) All-America Basketball Team.
Selection committees in each of the nine WBCA geographical regions select 10 of the top women's basketball players in the nation to be honored.
According to Chipola coach David Lane, Williams is the first freshman from Chipola to win an All-American Award. Lane says the award is even more significant because it includes hundreds of players from all three divisions of community college basketball.
Williams led the Lady Indians and the Panhandle Conference in scoring this season with 18 points per game. She also averaged 9.5 rebounds per game.
Williams was named First Team All-Conference, First Team All-State, and has been nominated for NJCAA All-American team.
