CHIPOLA BRAIN BOWLERS
FINISH SECOND AND SIXTH AT NATIONALS
MARIANNA—For the second straight year, the Chipola College Brain Bowl A team
finished second in the Community College NAQT National Championship.
Chipola A and Chipola B finished second and sixth respectively in the 24-team
field at the national championship held Feb. 28 at Valencia Community College.
Chipola A finished second in the nation for the second year in a row. Teams were
initially bracketed into three brackets of eight. The top two finishers in
each bracket then advanced to the top bracket, where they played each other in
another round robin. Chipola A finished the initial round undefeated, but lost
two of the four matches in the re-bracket, giving them a 9-2 overall record. J.
Sargent Reynolds College finished with a 10-1 record, giving them a place in the
finals. Northeast Alabama and defending champion Valencia also finished with a
9-2 record, making it a three way tie for second place. Chipola A then defeated
Northeast Alabama and Valencia in back-to-back games in a jam packed auditorium
to advance to the championship game, where they lost to J. Sargent Reynolds.
Chipola B may have been the real story of the tournament. Entering as the number
three team in their bracket, Chipola B knocked off number two seed Snead State
and top seed J. Sargent Reynolds in the initial round robin. This was the only
loss in the tournament for the eventual champion, J. Sargent Reynolds.
By finishing with a 6-1 record in the first round robin, Chipola B also made
their way to the top bracket of six. Chipola B had a tougher time in the top
bracket, losing all four games, including the game against Chipola A, but the
all-freshmen team had a very impressive tournament.
This was the first separate community college national championship that has
ever been held. It is not affiliated with the FCCAA State Championship.
Therefore, both Chipola A and Chipola B still have a chance to win the Florida
state championship, which be held at Brevard Community College on March 27-28.
Chipola is the defending state champion.
By virtue of their success at the community college national tournament, both
Chipola teams now advance to the Division II Championship which will be held in
Dallas, Texas on April 3-4. The top six finishers at the community college
championship automatically qualify for the Division II Championship, which will
include first and second year players from four year colleges including Cornell,
Davidson, Northwestern, Ohio State, Princeton, UCLA, Vanderbilt and Yale.
Chipola A Team Members and their high school alma maters, are: Jordan
Belser (Holmes County High), Anthony Garrett (Marianna High), Brad Wells (Altha
High) and Ryan Wells (Altha High). Chipola B Team Members are: Anthony Berkley
(Holmes County High), Ethan Hewett (Sneads High), Nathan Hooppell (Sneads High),
Drew Padgett (Graceville High), and Cody Pickens (Sneads High).
Chipola Brain Bowl coaches are Stan Young and Dr. Robert Dunkle.
