CHIPOLA’S ‘ANYTHING GOES’ OPENS WEDNESDAY
MARIANNA—The Chipola College production of “Anything Goes,” opens a five-day run, Wednesday, March 9, in the Chipola Theatre.
Tickets are on sale in the college Business Office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through March 9. Phone sales are available at 718-2220. During the run of the show, tickets may be purchased at the Theater box office 45 minutes prior to each show.
A handful of good seats still are available for the 7:30 p.m. evening shows and the 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.
“Anything Goes” is a hilarious screwball comedy set onboard the SS America as it steams from New York to London. A glorious collection of colorful 1930’s characters make up the crew, including: a lovesick stowaway, a brassy nightclub evangelist, a beautiful young debutante and her doting (but dotty) mother, a boozy and lecherous old tycoon, a bumbling gangster disguised as a priest, a silly English Lord with a mysterious past and a whole ship full of tap-dancing sailors and high-kicking chorus girls. The popular musical offers an evening of romance, dance, mistaken identities, mismatched lovers and of course those wonderful Cole Porter songs.

CHIPOLA TEAMS MAKE STATE TOURNAMENT
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Indians will face Hillsborough Community College in the in the first round of the 2005 Florida/Region VIII Men’s Basketball Tournament, Thursday, March 10 at 6:30 p.m.
The Indians enter the tournament as defending state champions and newly-crowned Panhandle Conference champions.
Chipola scored a 57-52 homecoming over Tallahassee Community College on Feb. 26. Mario Boggan led Chipola with 28 points, 13 rebounds, 4 blocks and 3 steals. Brent Crews scored 12 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals and 4 assists. Kendaris Pelton had 9 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Win improves 28-2 on the season
The Indians captured their second straight Panhandle Conference championship with a 77-62 win at Okaloosa-Walton on Feb. 23. Boggan led the game with 25 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 blocks. Ryne Hamblet had 17 points on five three-pointers, with 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Jimmy Sloss had 14 points and 5 rebounds. Kendaris Pelton logged 8 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals.
The Indians scored a big 86-57 home court win over Pensacola on Feb. 21.
Stefhon Hannah led with 16 points and 7 assists. Mario Boggan had 11 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals. Pawel Malesa scored 10 points. Jimmy Sloss had 10 points and 7 rebounds. Gerrard Jackson scored 10 points and 6 rebounds. Victor Gomez had 8 points and 8 rebounds.
The Indians slipped past Gulf Coast on Feb. 19 in a 77-76 nail biter in PC. Boggan led with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Jackson had 12, with 7 rebounds. Hamblet had 10 points and 7 rebounds. Hannah scored 10 and pulled in 5 rebounds.
LADY INDIANS
The Chipola Lady Indians (25-6) will play Palm Beach, Wednesday, March 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the first round of the women’s Florida/Region VIII Tournament at Chipola’s Milton H. Johnson Health Center.
Chipola defeated Pensacola Junior College, 57-48, in a playoff game, Feb. 21, to decide the runner-up in the Panhandle Conference. Tojalyn Atmore and Nacole Stocks each scored 14 points. Chipola and Pensacola entered the game tied for second place behind first place Gulf Coast.
The Lady Indians defeated Tallahassee, 62-49, on Feb. 26. Chinata Nesbit led with 17 points. Tamika Jackson had 12.
The Lady Indians scored a 50-47 win over Okaloosa-Walton on Feb. 23. Chinata Nesbit led Chipola with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Indians made history on Feb. 1, when they scored a 62-40 upset over the top-ranked Lady Commodores of Gulf Coast. The Chipola win marked Gulf Coast’s first loss in 66 games.
The Florida/Region VIII State Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament runs March 9-13 in the Milton H. Johnson Health Center. CHIPOLA BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL AT HOME THIS WEEK
MARIANNA—The Chipola College baseball and softball teams host a spate of home games this week.
The Lady Indians softball team hosts Darton College in a double-header, Tuesday, March 8, at 3 p.m. The team travels to OW for a tournament, March 11-12 and to Andrew College on March 15.
The Lady Indians open the Panhandle Conference race, Thursday, March 17, at 4 p.m., when they host Tallahassee in a double-header.
The softball team is out to a 13-6 start in pre-conference play.
The Chipola Indians baseball team hosts Grand Rapids in a double-header, Saturday, March 5, beginning at 1 p.m. Chipola hosts Kankakee College in a double-header, Wednesday, March 9 at 2 p.m., and Grand Rapids in a double-header, Thursday, March 10 at 3 p.m.
The Indians open the Panhandle Conference race on the road at OW, March 15, at 5 p.m.

MARIANNA—Ten Chipola basketball players were recently tapped for All-Panhandle Conference honors.
Six Indians were named to the All-Conference team. Mario Boggan is averaging 21.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game and is sixth in the state in field goal percentage at 60 percent. Point guard Stefhon Hannah is averaging 6.2 assists and 3.2 steals per game. Kendaris Pelton is first in the state in free throws with a 95 percent average. Anderson Ferreira is third in the state in three-point shooting with a 51 percent average.
Michael Taylor and Ryne Hamblet were named to the All Conference Second team.
First year Chipola men’s coach, Greg Heiar, was named Conference Coach of the Year. The Indians captured the Panhandle Conference Championship to finish the regular season at 28-2 and 11-1 in league play. Chipola will play Hillsborough CC in the first round of the State JUCO Tournament, Thursday, March 10 at 6:30 p.m., in the Milton H. Johnson Health Center.
Four Lady Indians garnered All-Conference Honors. Chinata Nesbit is averaging 12.1 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. Tamika Jackson is averaging 8.7 rebounds per game.
Tayani Clark was named to the All Conference Second team. She is averaging 2.3 steals per game. Tojalynn Atmore was named to the All Conference Honorable Mention list.

MARIANNA—The University of West Florida Social Work program at Chipola College is now admitting students for the summer and fall semesters. Registration for the Summer term begins in April.
The bachelor’s degree program prepares graduates for entry into the social work field. Currently, 34 students are completing internships in local counties. Thirteen of these students will
graduate in May, with plans to begin working immediately.
Sherri Stone, who directs the UWF program at Chipola, says, "Social Work is a growing field with job opportunities in areas such as drug abuse/prevention, hospital/hospice/home health, adoptions, school social work, corrections, juvenile justice, community planning, foster care, abuse prevention and domestic violence prevention."
All UWF classes are offered on the Chipola campus during the evening.

THREE CHIPOLA STUDENTS NAMED GUISTWHITE SCHOLARS
MARIANNA—Three Chipola College students—Lauren Eade, Paige Rentz and Brandon Sasser—recently were named Guistwhite Scholars by Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society for Community College students.
The Chipola sophomores each will receive $5,000 scholarships which accompany the prestigious awards.
Students from more than 1,700 community colleges around the world are eligible for the annual awards program which serves to recognize the scholarly achievements of community college students. No more than 20 awards are made annually which makes Chipola students’ accomplishment even more significant.
Guistwhite Scholars are awarded $5,000 scholarships to facilitate completion of their education at a four-year college of their choice. Applicants must have a 3.5 or better GPA, and are judged on community service, work experience, honors and participation in out-of-class academic enrichment programs.
The three Chipola students all are officers in the college’s award-winning chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and are active in numerous service and student organizations.
Lauren Eade of Marianna is a member of the Chipola Honors program, Student Government Association and Student Ambassadors. She was involved with the Rock the Vote event held in conjunction with the PTK Regional Honors Institute on the Chipola campus this summer. In the aftermath of last fall’s hurricanes, Lauren organized a group of students to travel to Pensacola to volunteer with the Red Cross relief efforts.
Lauren initiated the First Books program with the goal of providing a new book to every first grade student in Chipola’s five-county district. She raised funds through donations from local businesses to purchase 1,350 books. With a group of volunteers, Lauren distributed a book to every first grader in four of the five local counties.
Paige Rentz of Sneads is the editor of the Chipola student newspaper, The Papoose. She is an Honors program student and a member of the college Brain Bowl team. Paige was the key leader of Chipola’s Rock the Vote Concert on campus last summer. The purpose was to encourage 18 to 25 year olds to register and to exercise their right to vote. Paige was instrumental in bringing politicians and musicians to campus to speak and perform. She also worked with the national Rock the Vote organization and was designated as their north Florida street team leader.
Paige also joined Lauren on the First Books distribution program and the Red Cross effort in Pensacola. Additionally, she organized monthly satellite seminars and a film series to explore the PTK Honors Study Topic, “Popular Culture: Shaping and Reflecting Who We Are.”
Brandon Sasser of Chipley is a member of college Honors program, Brain Bowl team, Student Government Association, Student Ambassadors, Mu Alpha Theta and the Science Club.
As Service Officer for Phi Theta Kappa, Brandon helped to raise awareness of Phi Theta Kappa’s International Service Project: Conquering Cancer. Brandon worked on a number of programs to inform students and community members about the disease. In addition to distributing Sun Safety packets, he also sold ribbons for breast cancer awareness and donated funds raised to the American Cancer Society.
Brandon is a regular tutor at Marianna’s McLane Community Center where he also helps sponsor Halloween and Christmas parties. Brandon is active in his local church and volunteers at the congregation’s Food Pantry.
The Guistwhite Scholarship Program is named in honor of Dr. Jack Guistwhite and his wife, Margaret. More than 25 years ago, Dr. Guistwhite developed the very first designated transfer scholarship for Phi Theta Kappa members, while an administrator at Florida Atlantic University.

A capacity home-court crowd in the Milton H. Johnson Health Center watched as Tojalyn “Sweet Pea” Atmore hit a shot at the buzzer to give Chipola the edge. Atmore also led Chipola with 16 points. Chinata Nesbit added 12. Tayani Clark scored 10.
The game appeared to be headed for overtime with four seconds remaining when Atmore made the field goal to give Chipola its first-ever women’s state title.
Second year Chipola head coach David Lane, said, “It was unbelievable. I’m so happy for Sweet Pea. We practiced the shot several times this year. From my angle, the shot appeared to be off, but it hooked and went in.”
Lane said his team had tremendous heart and spirit. “They battled and did what they had to do to win. It was a neat experience for them. I’m happy they’ll get to go to nationals. That’s why I coach, so they can get see that hard work pays off.”

Local fans wishing to attend the NJCAA National Tournaments must make reservations by Thursday, March 17 at Noon.
The European Style tour bus will depart from the Chipola Health Center on Sunday, March 20 at 8 a.m. The latest date of return would be late evening, Sunday, March 27. An exact date of return can not be determined at this time. Participant cost is $150 round-trip fee per person.
Chipola is holding hotel rooms for tour bus riders. However, riders will be responsible for lodging and food costs. Riders must stay in hotels booked by Chipola. Limited seats are available. No reservations will be taken after the Thursday, March 17 Noon deadline.

Chipola National Tourney Press Conference
Friday, March 18, Noon, at Chipola College
Chipola College will host a Press Conference at noon, Friday, March 18 in the Chipola Cafeteria for an important announcement about Chipola’s double-team trip to the National Junior College Basketball Tournaments in Kansas.
Chipola’s State Champion coaches Greg Heiar and David Lane will be on hand with some two dozen team captains who are working to raise the funds needed to send both Chipola basketball teams to the national tournaments, March 22-26. The team captains are expected to present a check for $50,000 to the coaches to help with their travel expenses.

The Chipola Indians (men’s team) will play Tuesday, March 22, at 2:30 p.m. (CST) in the first round of the NJCAA Basketball Tournament in Hutchinson, KS. If the Indians win Tuesday, they will play Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. A loss in the first round would move Chipola to the consolation bracket for a 11 a.m. game on Thursday. LADY INDIANS
The Lady Indians will play in the first round of the NJCAA Basketball Tournament in Salina, KS. The seeding for the women’s tournament will be done on the afternoon of Thursday, March 17. The women’s championship game is Saturday, March 26 at 7 p.m.

All Chipola games will be broadcast on WJAQ-100.9 FM in Marianna. The broadcast may be accessed via internet through a link on www.chipola.edu
Both teams will depart Saturday, March 19, at 11 a.m. from the Milton H. Johnson Health Center. The teams will travel by bus to Atlanta where the men will practice in the Atlanta Dome, and the women will practice at Georgia Tech. The teams will fly to Witchita, KS, Sunday, and travel by van to their respective tournaments.

RETIREMENT RECEPTION SET FOR ANNETTE WIDNER
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Enrollment Services department will host a reception honoring Annette Widner, Director of Admissions and Registration, on Thursday, April 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Continuing Education Building.
Widner is retiring after 39 years of service. She began her career at Chipola in 1964 as a switchboard operator and receptionist; she has served as the Registrar for Chipola since 1984.
Widner is a member of the Florida Association of Community Colleges, Florida Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, Southern Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, and Florida Community College Registrars and Admissions Officers. She was chosen as the Faculty/Administrator of the Month for March 2005.
Widner is married to Claude Widner who retired from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. The Widners have two children, Michael Wilder, who is married to the former Jan Lowe and Michelle Widner Blackmon who is married to Jeff Blackmon. Michael and Michelle are both Chipola graduates. Widner is actively involved in the Caverns Road Church of Christ.

CHIPOLA TO OFFER PARAMEDIC TRAINING PROGRAM
MARIANNA—Chipola College was recently approved to offer a new Paramedic Training Program.
Kathy Wheeler, Chipola Director of Health Science programs, said, “We are thrilled to announce that the Florida Bureau of Emergency Management Services has awarded full approval for our Paramedic Training Program. This approval comes at a time of dire need for trained paramedics in our district as well as surrounding districts.”
James McMillan, a paramedic with 11 years experience, will serve as lead instructor in the new program. Wheeler said, “James is to be commended for his professional direction and composition of an excellent Paramedic Program Curriculum.”
Application deadline for the new program is April 22. Only certified Emergency Medical Technicians are eligible to enroll. Classes will meet from 1 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, beginning May 10.

CHIPOLA STUDENTS HELP RAISE $6,000 FOR TSUNAMI VICTIMS
MARIANNA—Chipola College students have helped to raise more than $6,000 for the Tsunami Relief efforts in Southeast Asia.
Funds were raised from donations collected at Chipola and most of the public schools in Chipola’s five-county district. Student leaders in the Chipola Honors Program, Phi Theta Kappa, Phi Beta Lambda and SGA spearheaded the effort which included coin drives, bake sales and fundraising at college basketball games.
All funds collected will flow through the United Way of Northwest Florida. The Chipola students agreed to send 25 percent of the donations to a short term relief fund administered by the Church World Service Emergency Response Program and 75 percent to the United Way South Asia Response Fund to address long-term problems in the region.

MOZART CONCERT TO HONOR RETIRING CHIPOLA PROFESSOR
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Chamber/Community Chorus will present the Mozart Requiem, Tuesday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chipola Arts Center.
The concert is being presented in honor of retiring piano professor/Chipola faculty member, Dr. Carolyn Wilson.
The chorus will be accompanied by a 25-piece orchestra under the direction of Chipola music professor Dr. Ed Lyon. Lyon will give a free pre-concert lecture on Mozart and the REQUIEM will from 6:30-7:00 in room H108 of the Fine Arts Building.
Soloists for the “Requiem” will include Chipola alumni and faculty, as well as Mozart lovers locally and from Tallahassee. The Chipola group will perform a recent edition of “Requiem” by Dr. Robert Levin of Harvard University, which is considered the latest, most authentic edition Mozart’s last work. The Chipola performance will be the Southeastern premier of this particular edition.
The concert is free and open to the public. Seating will be first-come, first served.

MARIANNA—The Chipola Indians baseball team hosts Pensacola Junior College, Saturday, April 2, at 1 p.m. at the Chipola field.
Chipola travels to Pensacola for a 2 p.m. game on April 3. The Indians return home to host Gulf Coast, Thursday, April 7 at 5 p.m.
Chipola hosts North Florida, Tuesday, April 12, at 5 p.m., for All-American day. People’s First Community Bank will provide free hot dogs, cokes and chips to all Chipola fans beginning at 4:30 p.m.
The Indians scored a 10-1 win over North Florida on March 29. David Mixon threw 8 solid innings for Chipola. Travis Anderson and David Cash each had 3 hits.
The Lady Indians softball team hosts George Wallace, Monday, April 4, in a 4 p.m. double-header. Chipola hosts Okaloosa-Walton, Wednesday, April 6, in a 4 p.m. double-header.
The Chipola softball team improved to 26-13 after splitting a double header with North Florida on March 29. Ashley Mayhue was the winning pitcher in Chipola’s 1-0 win in game one. Jessica Littlejohn was the losing pitcher in Chipola’s 5-4 loss in game two.

CHIPOLA FINISHES FOURTH IN NATIONAL TOURNEY
HUTCHINSON, KS—The Chipola College Indians finished the 2005 season as the number four team in the country after winning three of five games at the NJCAA National Basketball Tournament.
The Indians scored an 80-63 win over Shelton State in the first round on March 22. Kendaris Pelton led Chipola with 22 points. Brent Crews scored 13. Mario Boggan added 12. Stefhon Hannah and Gerrard Jackson scored 11 apiece.
Chipola defeated Seminole State (OK), 73-66, in a second round game on March 23. Boggan led with 17 points. Michael Taylor scored 12. Anderson Ferreira scored 11.
