TWO CHIPOLA TRUSTEES REAPPOINTED BY GOVERNOR
MARIANNA—Two current members of the Chipola College District Board of Trustees—John Padgett of Marianna and Mark Plummer of Bristol—recently were re-appointed by Gov. Jeb Bush to additional four-year terms. Both trustees were originally appointed in 1999.
Plummer, a pharmacist from Bristol, served as chair of the board in 2003-04
year. He currently serves as Library liaison for the board.
Padgett is a retiree who worked for the Compass Lake in the Hills development and also served as a Jackson County commissioner. He is a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and the Jackson County Fair.
Padgett is the board’s current vice-chair. He also serves as financial liaison for the board.
Seven other trustees represent Chipola’s five-county district on the nine-member board: Brenda Taylor of Bonifay, Gina Stuart of Marianna, Danny Ryals of Blountstown, Gary Clark of Chipley, Jeff Crawford of Marianna, Jennie Goodman of Bonifay and Abby Hinson of Chipley.
The Board of Trustees meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the college Public Service Building to set policy for the college.

MARIANNA—Some 100 students from 14 area high school competed in writing, reading, speech, oral interpretation, literature, humanities, grammar, and foreign language contests at Chipola College on Feb. 18.
The occasion was the Sixteenth Annual Throssell Literature/Language Festival hosted by Chipola’s Literature/Language Department. The purpose of the festival is to recognize and encourage academic excellence.
Prizes were awarded to first, second and third places, as well as two honorable mentions, in each category. The winner of the President’s Reading Contest received a special medallion as well as a cash award.

CHIPOLA HOOPSTERS SET TO DEFEND STATE TITLES
MARIANNA—Both Chipola College basketball teams are set to defend their titles as the best teams in Florida when they play in the Men’s and Women’s FCCAA/Region VIII tournaments, March 8-11, at Chipola College.
The defending state champion Indians begin their quest for an unprecedented third straight title, Wednesday, March 8, at 8:30 p.m., in a first round game against Palm Beach CC.
The Indians finished the regular season as Co-Champions of the Panhandle Conference after a 67-66 loss to TCC on Feb. 25. Stefhon Hannah led Chipola with 16 and DeAndre Thomas with 11.
Chipola and TCC finished with identical 10-2 league records; however, Chipola beat TCC in two of three meetings to earn the Panhandle Champion seed in the state tournament. If both Chipola and TCC advance, they will meet in the championship game on Saturday, March 11.
Chipola scored a 78-76 win over OW Feb. 22 on a last second slam dunk by Johnnie Harris who finished with 9 on the night. Chipola trailed OW 37-29 at the half. Hannah led Chipola with 18. Jamarcus Ellis had 15. Ryne Hamblett scored 14.
The Indians scored a 97-65 Homecoming win over Gulf Coast on Feb. 18. Hannah led with 19 points. Gerard Jackson added 14. Shawn Taylor had 12 and Hamblet added 10.
The Indians are the defending Florida/Region VIII Champions and are first in the FCCAA men’s state poll and sixth in the NJCAA national poll.
The Lady Indians finished out the regular season with a 67-61 win over TCC on Feb. 25. Nacole Stocks led Chipola with 21. Chinata Nesbit and Christian Pace each scored 14.
Chipola scored a 59-48 win over OW. Nesbit led Chipola with 13 points. Chipola scored a 77-46 win over North Florida Feb. 20.
The Lady Indians are the defending FCCAA/Region VIII Champions. Chipola finished as runner-up in the Panhandle Conference and will play Central Florida in the first round of the women’s tournament, Thursday, March 9, at 6:30 p.m.
Gulf Coast is the Panhandle Champion. Chipola is the runner-up. Third place OW also will play in the tournament. If Chipola and Gulf Coast advance, they will meet in the Championship game on Saturday, March 11.
The Chipola women’s squad scored a huge 64-60 upset over Gulf Coast on Feb. 22. Nesbit led Chipola with 24 points and 18 rebounds. Stocks and Shawnta Pope each added 11.
Nesbit was named NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Player-of-the-Week on Feb. 22. The sophomore led Chipola to an 84-71 win over Pensacola and a 64-60 win over Gulf Coast. In the upset win over Gulf Coast she collected 24 points, 19 rebounds, two steals and two blocks. On the week she averaged a double-double with 20.5 points and 14 rebounds along with 1.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 2 blocks per game.
Chipola is second in the women’s state poll and ninth in the national poll with 12-3 league record and a 26-4 overall mark.

CHIPOLA BASEBALL AT HOME THIS WEEK
MARIANNA—The Chipola College baseball team improved to 13-6 on the year with a 3-1 win over Wallace on March 1.
Winning pitcher was Chris Kirkland who allowed one run in seven innings. Stephen Brock and Tyler Musslewhite also pitched one inning apiece in the win.
The Indians are scheduled to host six in a row this week, including: Grand Rapids (DH), March 3, 2 p.m.; Central Alabama (DH), March 4, 2 p.m.; Central Alabama, March 5, 1 p.m.; and Grand Rapids, March 7 at 3 p.m.
Chipola opens the conference season in a 5 p.m. game Friday, March 10 at Gulf Coast. The Indians host GC Saturday, March 11, at 1 p.m.
All baseball games are free of charge and concessions are available.
The Indians are defending Panhandle Conference Champions.

CHIPOLA SOFTBALL TEAM RANKED THIRD
MARIANNA—The Lady Indians softball team is currently ranked third in the FCCAA state poll with a 16-2 overall record.
Chipola split a double-header with Lake City on Feb. 28. Chipola won the first game, 8-1, behind the pitching of Nadine van Roode. Chipola lost the second game, 6-5.
The Lady Indians travel to Enterprise Ozark CC for a two-day tournament, March 4-5; to Gadsen State, March 8, and to North Florida, March 11-12.
The Lady Indians’ next home game is Monday, March 13, when they host Kishuaukee in a doubleheader at 4 p.m.

MARIANNA—Twelve Chipola basketball players earned All-Panhandle Conference honors for the 2005-06 regular season.
Chipola’s Stefhon Hannah is the Panhandle Men’s Player of the Year. Four Chipola players were named First Team All-Conference: Stefhon Hannah, Jamarcus Ellis, Gerard Jackson and Michael Taylor.
Chipola players Ryne Hamblet, Johnnie Harris and DeAndre Thomas earned Second Team All-Conference honors.
Second year Chipola men’s coach, Greg Heiar, will share Conference Coach of the Year honors with TCC coach Eddie Barnes. Chipola and TCC finished with identical 10-2 league records; however, Chipola beat TCC in two of three meetings to earn the Panhandle Champion seed in the state tournament.

GUARDIAN AD-LITEM FESTIVAL IS MARCH 11 IN BONIFAY

STATE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT BEGINS WEDNESDAY AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA–The local motels and restaurants will be filled with some very tall people as Florida’s best junior college teams invade Marianna for the Men’s and Women’s FCCAA/Region VIII state Basketball Tournament which begins Wednesday at Chipola’s Johnson Health Center.
The men take the floor first this year with four first round games on Wednesday, March 8. Game One begins at 2 p.m. (CST) with Southern Champion Indian River playing Suncoast Runner-up Hillsborough. Game Two begins at 4 p.m. with Mid Florida Champion Central Florida and Panhandle Runner-Up Tallahassee. Game Three begins at 6:30 p.m. with Sun Coast Champion St. Petersburg and Mid Florida Runner-Up Daytona Beach. Panhandle Champion Chipola College plays Southern Runner-Up Palm Beach in the 8:30 p.m. nightcap.
Chipola’s men enter the tournament as the top-ranked team in the state and number six in the national poll. The Indians are led by second-year head coach Greg Heiar who was recently named Co-Panhandle Coach of the Year. Panhandle Conference Player of the Year Stefhon Hannah sets the pace for Chipola. He is averaging 14 points, 6.5 assists and 3 steals per game.
The Chipola Lady Indians enter the tournament as the defending state champions. They are led by third year head coach David Lane. All Conference selection Chinata Nesbit is Chipola’s leading scorer with 15 points per game.
Women’s action begins Thursday, March 9, at 2 p.m. as Mid Florida Champion Florida Community College @ Jacksonville and Southern Runner-Up Indian River compete in Game One. Game Two begins at 4 p.m. with Panhandle Champion Gulf Coast playing Southern Third Place St. Petersburg. Game Three begins at 6:30 p.m. with Panhandle Runner-Up Chipola and Mid Florida Runner-Up Central Florida. Game Four begins at 8:30 p.m. with Southern Champion Miami Dade against Panhandle Third Place Okaloosa Walton.
Men’s and women’s semi-finals will take place on Friday, March 10 with the men playing at 2 and 6:30 p.m. and the women playing at 4 and 8:30 p.m.
The State Championship title games are set for Saturday, March 11 with the men
at 5 p.m., and the women at 7:30 p.m.
The Men’s and Women’s State Champions will advance to their NJCAA National Tournaments, March 21-25, in Hutchinson and Salina, KS, respectively.

CREDIT UNIONS SIGN ON TO SPONSOR STATE TOURNAMENT
MARIANNA—Three local credit unions have contributed $10,000 to sponsor the State Junior College Basketball Tournament, set for March 8-11, at Chipola College.
Focus Credit Union in Marianna, Chattahoochee and Quincy made the lead donation, along with Community South Credit Union in Chipley, Jackson County Teachers Credit Union in Marianna, and The Florida Credit Union League, Inc.
Chipola president Dr. Gene Prough, said, “We welcome Focus CU, Community South CU and JCTCU as corporate sponsors. We depend on the support of the business community to help us operate the tournament.”
Waste Management, Inc., long-time corporate sponsor of the event, recently donated $10,000 to sponsor the tournament. The Jackson County Tourist Development Council awarded a $10,000 grant to help promote the tournament.
Tournament officials estimate that more than $250,000 will flow into the area during the tournament from food, lodging, recreation and incidental expenses. More than 175 rooms will be reserved for teams and game officials.
Tournament passes—$25 for adults and $15 for students—will get fans into all 14 exciting tournament games. Single session tickets are $10; $6 for students. The tournament passes are a good deal, and they are the only guarantee of a seat for the championship games.
The men’s tournament begins Wednesday, March 8, at 2 p.m. The women’s tournament begins Thursday, March 9, at 2 p.m. Game times on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are 2, 4, 6:30 and 8:30. The championship games are set for 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

CHIPOLA TO RETIRE JERSEY OF ABA STAR ‘RED’ ROBBINS
MARIANNA—Chipola College announced today the number 14 jersey worn by former ABA All-Star Austin “Red” Robbins will be retired Friday, March 10.
The ceremony will take place during halftime of the 6:30 p.m. (CST) game between Chipola and St. Petersburg at the State Junior College Basketball Tournament being held this week on the Chipola campus in Marianna. The venue is a fitting one for the 6’8 Robbins who led the Indians to a state championship in 1964 and back-to-back appearances in the NJCAA National Tournament in 1963 and 1964.
Robbins is arguably one of the best players to ever wear a Chipola jersey, especially considering that his school scoring and rebounding records have stood for 40-plus years. He scored 1,361 points over two seasons at Chipola and averaged 27 points per game his sophomore year. A two-time All-State and All-Region selection, he still holds all three rebounding records at Chipola: single-game (37), season (590) and career (1,105). In his 1964 season Chipola won the state and region championships and finished seventh at the national tournament. Robbins was named to the NJCAA All-America Team, the NJCAA All-Tournament team and the NJCAA All-Star team in that season.
Milton Johnson, who coached Robbins at Chipola, said, “Red Robbins is a special person. He is considered the best big player to ever come out of junior college in Florida by people who have followed the game over the years. He was one of the best offensive rebounders I’ve ever seen. He was an outstanding tipper and put back man.”
After Chipola, Robbins played for the University of Tennessee where he was a All-Southeastern Conference selection and a Helms Athletic Foundation first team All-American his senior year. In two years at Tennessee he scored 670 points and grabbed 525 rebounds, bringing his college career numbers to 2,031 points and 1,630 rebounds.
Robbins’ professional career included a year in the Italian league followed by eight years in the ABA with five teams: New Orleans Buccaneers (1967-70), the Utah Stars (1970-72), the San Diego Conquistadors (1972-74) the Kentucky Colonels (1973-75) and the Virginia Squires (1974-75).
Robbins ranks among the ABA career leaders in rebounds per game (11th with 16.24), total rebounds (fourth with 6,155), games played (13th with 586) and minutes played (13th with 18,745). He was a two-time selection to the ABA All-League Team (1969 and 1970) and a three-time selection for the ABA All-Star Game his first three seasons in the league.
Chipola president Dr. Gene Prough said, “It’s a privilege to welcome back Red Robbins and his wife Jane. Red helped put Chipola on the map in men’s basketball and we are proud to honor him by retiring his Chipola jersey.”

SPANISH FILM/LECTURE SERIES SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College professor Dr. Mark Ebel announces a Spanish Film Series beginning March 28 at the college.
The events are free and open to the public and will be held in Jackson Lecture Hall of the Chipola Literature/Language Building.
The first event is a film/lecture entitled, “What We Would Learn if Dogs Were Our Teachers in Alejandro Inarritu’s Amores Perros,” on Tuesday, March 28, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The film was produced in Mexico in 2002 and nominated for an academy award for Best Foreign Film. It will be shown in the original Spanish with English subtitles. The unrated film is not recommended for children as it contains potentially offensive language, sexuality and violence.
The second event—set for April 11, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.—is a lecture and slide presentation, “Translation and Triage: Lessons Learned from a Medical Mission to Honduras.” The presentation chronicles Dr. Ebel’s recent mission to the South American country. Ebel presented a paper on the mission and served as a panelist on Health and Society in Latin America at the recent annual professional meeting of SCOLAS (Southwest Council on Latin American Studies).
The final event in the series is a lecture: “Traveling to Cuba: Is It Possible?” and a film, “Carros de Cuba,” Tuesday, April 18, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The lecture will provide practical information for traveling to Cuba and a documentary film with a light-hearted theme: the presence and maintenance of classic American cars in Cuba. The film is mostly in Spanish with English subtitles.

MARIANNA—The Core Ensemble will present “Tres Vidas” at Chipola College, April 3, at 7:30 p.m.
The concert is the final event of the 2005-06 Chipola Artist Series.
Consisting of cello, piano, and percussion, Core Ensemble will perform the new music theatre piece, Tres Vidas (Three Lives). The work celebrates the lives of three powerful Latin American women: Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, Salvadoran peasant-activist Rufina Amaya, and Argentine poet Alfonsina Storni. Tres Vidas features a script by award-winning Chilean writer Marjorie Agosin. Actress Georgina Corbo will portray all three protagonists with the Core Ensemble onstage. The trio also will perform popular and folkloric music from a variety of Latin cultures.
The Chipola Artist Series is funded through Chipola's Performing Arts Fund, with grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Southern Arts Federation, the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, the Chipola Regional Arts Association and corporate donors.

Chipola to present free Gilbert and Sullivan concert
MARIANNA—Two of Chipola College’s Ensembles will perform free concerts, Tuesday, April 4 at 7 p.m., in the Chipola Arts Center.
The 13-member Rock and Jazz Ensemble, under the directions of Dr. Allen Molineux, will play a variety of selections from the Swing Era, Rock Literature, and Latin rhythms. Each member of the Rock and Jazz Ensemble will be featured as a soloist during the concert.
The Chipola Chamber/Community Chorus will present A Gilbert and Sullivan Sampler Concert on the same evening. William.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan were composers of 14 light operas called “operettas” in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. The Chipola Chorus will feature brief selections from five of these: “Trial by Jury,” “Pirates of Penzance,” “H.M.S. Pinafore,” “The Mikado,” and “The Gondoliers.” The British humor in these wonderful musicals is delightful and fun for all. Community members Hope Rister, Bette Giese, Timothy A. Jumonville, and Jeff Allen will be featured. Chipola soloists include Bradly Bunce, Tina Lester, Nick Melvin, Daniel Carter, and Scott Boyle and others.

MARIANNA—Audition dates for music and theatre scholarships at Chipola College for 2006-2007 are April 6, and May 4. The Visual Art Scholarship application and portfolio deadline is April 20.
High School graduates with acceptable academic records and aptitude who plan to pursue studies as music, theatre or art majors are eligible to apply.
Scholarships in various amounts, up to full tuition and fees, are awarded on the basis of talent and academic record. Students with financial need may seek additional assistance through the college’s Office of Financial Aid and the Chipola Foundation.

CHIPOLA SHOW CHOIR AUDITIONS SET FOR APRIL
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Show Choir will hold auditions Thursday, April 13, with call-backs April 14 in the Chipola Arts Center.
Interested incoming freshmen and current Chipola students are encouraged to audition. All students should come with: comfortable clothes and shoes for the dance audition; a completed Show Choir Application (available in the Fine Arts Office or at www.chipola.edu (Fine and Performing Arts Page – Music Department) and an accompanied vocal solo. Those auditioning should bring either an accompaniment track, cassette or CD, or an accompanist. Unaccompanied auditions are not accepted.
Auditions begin at 4 p.m., Thursday, April 13, with call-backs at 4 p.m., Friday, April 14.
The Show Choir performs throughout the panhandle for schools, civic organizations and Chipola district events. The Show Choir has won awards at the Invitational Show Choir Workshop; has participated in the Florida Community College Show Choir Festivals; has been guest performer on Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise lines. The January Show Choir JAZZMATAZZ concerts have been sellouts for eight consecutive years.
All choir members must take a Show Choir class for credit and register for MUN1370 or MUN2371. Scholarships are available and must be applied for at the time of the audition. Forms are available on the Web or in the Fine Arts Office.

MARIANNA—The Florida State University Panama City Campus will award five scholarships to Chipola College students who complete their AA degree and transfer directly to the Panama City Campus.
The “Transfer Student Scholarship” is awarded each year in April to five students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance and reflect academic promise.
Interested students must meet the following criteria: a 3.5 (or better) GPA; an AA degree from Chipola; and apply and be admitted to FSU Panama City by April 1, 2006.

FRENCH COURSE SET FOR CHIPOLA SUMMER TERM
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer Intermediate French I (FRE 2200) this Summer.
The course will meet from 12:30 to 3 p.m., on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Classes will meet from May 9 through August 8. The Instructor is Dana Ayers.

MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer a variety of short courses in the coming weeks.
A Cake Decorating II class will meet Thursdays, April 2 through 30 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Cost is $41. An Advanced Level Cake Decorating III class will meet Thursdays, May 4 through 25 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Cost is $41.
A 20 Hour Childcare Training course will meet April 1 & 8 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost is $76. A 10 Hour Childcare Training (developmentally appropriate practices, 3-5 year olds) course will meet May 6 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost is $38.
An Introduction to Computers with Internet for Seniors class will meet March 30 from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost is $24.

LADY INDIANS HEADED TO NATIONAL TOURNAMENT
The Chipola College Lady Indians will represent Florida and Region VIII in the NJCAA Women’s Tournament, March 21-25, in Salina, KS.
Chipola will play the University of Arkansas Fort-Smith at noon on Tuesday, March 21. The Lady Indians’ games will be broadcast on WJAQ-100.9 FM. Brackets for the NJCAA Division I double-elimination tournament are available at www.njcaa.org.
The Lady Indians captured their second straight state championship with a 73-69 overtime win over the Gulf Coast Lady Commodores, March 11, in the FCCAA/Region VIII Tournament at Chipola.
Chipola trailed 39-27 at the half, but Tournament MVP Chinata Nesbit spurred Chipola’s comeback with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Nicole Stocks scored 15 on the night. CJ Pace had 12. Ra’Shawna Sippio scored 19 and Ta’Yani Clark added 9.
The game marked the second year in a row that the Lady Indians had to overcome perennial favorite Gulf Coast to take the state title. Third year Chipola coach David Lane led Chipola to its first-ever women’s championship in 2005.
Chipola also scored a 75-66 win over Central Florida in the opening round of the tournament, and a 61-58 win over Okaloosa-Walton in the semi-finals.
The Lady Indians’ overall record stands at 29-4 and 3-0 in post-season play.
Chipola Men’s team falls to TCC in State Championship game
The Chipola Indians fell short in their bid to become the first men’s team ever to win three straight Florida JUCO state titles when they lost to Tallahassee, 98-96, in triple overtime on March 11.
Stefhon Hannah led Chipola with 25 points, before fouling out in the waning seconds of the game. Michael Taylor scored 19 points including five three-pointers. All five of Chipola starters fouled out in the 65-minute marathon.
At the end of regulation, the game was tied at 73-73. The score was 81-81 after the first overtime, and 88-88 after the second extra session.
Chipola whipped Palm Beach, 80-64, in the opening round of the tournament. The Indians slipped by St. Petersburg, 81-68, in the semi-finals.
The Indians finished the season with a 29-4 overall mark.

LOCAL PLAYERS WIN CHIPOLA HIGH SCHOOL 3-POINT SHOOTOUT
MARIANNA—Priscilla Isaacs from Holmes County High School won the Chipola College Girls High School Three-Point Championship with seven shots in the final round.
The 5’6, sophomore is a guard at Holmes County where she averaged seven points per game. Isaacs’ coach at HCHS is Joanie Albury.
Peire Speights from Cottondale High School won the Chipola Men’s High School Three-point Championship with 10 shots in the final round.
The 5’9, sophomore is a guard at Cottondale where he averaged 12 points per game. Speights’ coach at Cottondale is T. J. Braxton.
Both champions win one-of-a-kind, personalized shooting jackets. Their names also will be engraved on traveling trophies which will be displayed at their home schools for one year, and also on trophies in the Milton H. Johnson Health Center.

UWF STUDENT NAMED SOCIAL WORKER OF THE YEAR
MARIANNA—Sharon Robinson, a student in the University of West Florida Social Work program at Chipola College has been named the Student Social Worker of the Year for the Emerald Coast Unit of the Florida Chapter of NASW (National Association of Social Workers). She will be honored at a reception on March 30 in Panama City.
Robinson works as an assistant in the Enrollment Services Office at Chipola College. She also works at Panhandle Family Care Associates. She currently is serving an internship at Covenant Hospice.
The award recognizes work by an individual who serves a population in need and increases the public’s knowledge and awareness of social work.
Sharon was nominated for her disaster relief work in Mississippi following hurricane Katrina. As a result of her work, other groups were encouraged to use their special abilities to meet needs. Medical personnel working with social workers for the first time saw their patients benefit from the intervention and advocacy skills that are a special part of social work.
While in Mississippi, Sharon was involved in food and clothing distribution, needs assessment, medical referrals and treatment.
Sherri Stone, director of the UWF Social Work program, says, “Sharon’s enthusiasm is contagious and she truly has a heart for helping people. Many people think of social workers as those people who ‘take away kids’ or “hand out welfare checks,’ but Sharon’s work in Mississippi allowed them to see a much bigger picture of the profession. She is an inspiring example of what social work has to offer individuals and communities, and we are very proud to claim her as our own.”

CHIPOLA LADY INDIANS ADVANCE IN NATIONAL TOURNAMENT
SALINA, KS—The Chipola College Lady Indians advanced to the quarter-finals of the NJCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament with an 88-74 first round win over the University of Arkansas Fort-Smith on Tuesday.
The Lady Indians jumped out to an early 18-4 lead, and led 48-34 at the break. Chipola expanded their lead to 21 points, but Fort-Smith rallied to come within 5 late in the second period.
Nacole Stocks led Chipola with 20 points. FCCAA Tournament MVP Ta’Yani Clark scored 16 for Chipola. LaToya Brown had 15. CJ Pace scored 11 and Ra’Shawna Sippio added 10. Keanna Vicks and Krishna Baker each scored 15 for Ft. Smith.
The Lady Indians will play either Trinity Valley or Northeast Mississippi in a quarterfinal game, Wednesday, March 22, at 8 p.m. (CST).
Chipola’s overall record stands at 30-4 and 4-0 in post-season play.
