Chipola Brain Bowl Wins third straight National Championship
ST. LOUIS—The Chipola College Brain Bowl A team won its third straight
national championship at the NAQT (National Academic Quiz Tournament) Community
College Championship Tournament in St. Louis, Missouri, March 2.
Chipola A defeated Valencia A in the final game. Lamar State College (TX)
took third. Redlands (OK), Jefferson (KY), and Central Florida (FL) finished
fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively.
The Chipola A team finished the preliminary rounds with a 5-0 record,
placing the team in the championship bracket. With a loss to Valencia in the 9th
round, Chipola finished the championship bracket at 5-1. The loss by the Chipola
team meant they had to beat Valencia twice in the finals to claim the title.
Chipola won the first match 560-285, to force a final match. Chipola completed
the title run by winning the second match also, with a score of 580-115.
Chipola was again led by sophomore Paul Kelson, who was the MVP of the
tournament averaging 214 points per game, the highest average in tournament
history. Other Chipola A team members are: Katelyn Miller, William Singleton and
Becca Delgado.
Chipola will now advance to the 2013 Intercollegiate Championship
Tournament to be held in Chicago, IL on April 12-13. Chipola will be one of six
community colleges competing at the tournament. Based on Chipola’s strong
performance at the community college championship, Chipola has received the
number 5 seed in the nation, behind only Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and Brown.
Chipola was the number 13 seed in last year’s competition, finishing the 2012
tournament in ninth place.
Chipola B also had a strong performance in the national tournament,
finishing seventh overall. Chipola B also made the championship bracket, but
fell one spot short of advancing to the ICT tournament in Chicago. Chipola B was
led by Blake Benton, finishing as the 13th overall individual. Other
Chipola B team members are: Wesley Chevillot, Bobby Gause, Jamie McCoy, and
Faith Tice.

Championship March 16 in Lake City. Chipola is now tied with Broward, both with

CHIPOLA DEan presents at
Nursing Conference
DALLAS—Dr. Vickie Stephens, Dean of the Chipola College School of Health
Sciences, served as a presenter and panelist at the thirteenth annual Community
College Baccalaureate Association Conference in Dallas, March 8-10.
Dr. Stephens served on a panel which provided an overview and historical
review of the creation of Baccalaureate Nursing programs in Florida. Dr.
Stephens also presented a plenary session highlighting the benefits of an online
RN to BSN program.
The theme of the conference was Alternative Pathways to the
Baccalaureate. Health educators from Australia, China, Denmark, Sweden and
numerous members from states in the United States were in attendance.
Dr. Stephens, said, “The state of Florida is known as a trend-setter in
the academic circles of community colleges making bachelors’ degrees accessible
and affordable to future students. Many states continue to work through
political issues related to community colleges offering baccalaureate degrees.”
In 2011, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommended that 80% of
Registered Nurses be Baccalaureate prepared by the year 2020. The Florida
College system has accepted the challenge by implementing post licensure RN to
BSN programs across the state. Currently, there are 14 Florida State
(Community) Colleges offering this option. The attainment of the BSN
offers advances in employment, clinical teaching opportunities, and advancement
of the professional nursing practice.
Chipola offers the RN-BSN Degree with all upper level classes offered in
an online format. The college
accepts RN-BSN students each semester and they may complete the online courses
in one year or choose to individualize their educational plans to fit their
schedules. Chipola’s RN-BSN program is now in the candidacy status for NLNAC
Accreditation.

Galvan (right), a graduate student enrolled in the Institut d'Études Politique
de Paris, recently interviewed Dr. Willie Spires, Chipola College Associate Dean
of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Galvan, a native of the Dominican
Republic, is conducting research on poverty for a thesis in Public Affairs.
Dr. Spires reported that the student was interested in the role of local
government in combatting poverty. The student also interviewed
Bill Stanton, Executive Director of the Jackson County
Development Council.

MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer a
free seminar, “What the Veterans’ Business Outreach Center Can Do
for You,” on Friday, March 22,
from 9:30 to 12:30 p.m., in Room M-108 of the Chipola Business and Technology
building.
The Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC) helps create, develop, and
retain veteran-owned small business enterprises. The VBOC provides
training through workshops, counseling, assistance, and resource utilization
services to Veterans, Service-Disabled Veterans, Reservists, National Guard, and
Active Duty business owners and entrepreneurs.

INDIANS FINISH SECOND IN STATE; HEADED TO NATIONALS
MARIANNA—The Chipola Lady Indians finished second in the Florida/Region VIII
Basketball Tournament held March 6-9 in Chipola’s Milton H. Johnson Health
Center.
Gulf Coast captured the women’s title with a 61-53 win over runner-up Chipola in
the Championship game on March 9. Chipola was led by Rayven Brooks with 15. Jade
Givens had 11 points and four steals. Three Lady Indians—Jade
Givens, Kristine Brance and Rayven Brooks—were named to the All-Tournament team.
In the women’s semi-final round, Chipola shocked Northwest, 72-52. Rahni Bell
led Chipola with 19 points on five three-pointers. Rayven Brooks had 18 points
and 9 rebounds. Kristine Brance had 11 points. Jasmine Crawford had nine points
and seven steals. Gulf Coast handled St. Pete, 80-70.
Chipola’s performance in the State Tournament won the Lady Indians an at-large
bid to play in the Women’s Basketball National Tournament in Salina, Kansas.

Chipola with 19 points. Crawford had 11 points. Givens had 9 points and 8
rebounds. St. Petersburg trounced Hillsborough, 55-41. Gulf Coast beat Santa Fe,
73-62. Northwest crushed Palm Beach, 83-66.
The Chipola men’s team lost their
bid for a 13th state title losing to Brevard, 82-72, in the
semi-final round. Chipola was led in scoring by Demetrious Floyd with 19 points.
Earl Watson had 15 points and seven rebounds. Cinmeon Bowers had 14 points and 6
rebounds.
Cinmeon Bowers and Earl Watson were both named to the
All-Tournament team.
Northwest was also upset in the semi-finals by Central Florida, 74-71.
In the men’s first round,
Chipola trounced Polk, 70-47. Torian Graham led Chipola with 18 points and 6
rebounds. Carlos Morris had 15 points and two threes. Bowers had 12 points and 8
rebounds. Central Florida beat State College of Florida, 90-77. Northwest
outlasted Palm Beach 72-64. Brevard dominated Santa Fe, 69-48.
Waste Management was the official host sponsor for the event. The Jackson County
Tourist Development Council awarded a grant to help fund the tournament.
The Florida Lottery, First Commerce Credit Union and the Jackson County Teachers

CHIPOLA Women HEADED TO
NATIONAL TOURNAMENT ON AT-LARGE BID
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The
Chipola Lady Indians have earned an at-large bid to play in the Women’s
Basketball National Tournament in Salina, Kansas.
Chipola (25-6) will play Southwest Illinois (25-5) Monday, March 18, at 8
p.m. (CST). A win would pit the Lady Indians against the winner of
Southern Idaho and Central Arizona in a 3 p.m. game on Wednesday, March 20. The
single-elimination tournament runs March 18-23.
The Lady Indians finished second in the FCSAA Florida/Region VIII
Tournament on March 9, losing 61-53 to state champion Gulf Coast in the title
game. Chipola made it to the championship game with a 72-52 win over Northwest
Florida State who also earned an at-large bid in the national tournament. The
Lady Indians beat Florida State College 62-55 in the opening round of the state
tournament.
The Lady Indians finished the regular season third in the Panhandle
Conference under first year head coach Greg Franklin. Gulf Coast and Northwest
were conference co-champions.
Franklin came to Chipola after serving five seasons as an assistant coach
in the Mississippi State University women’s basketball program where he was
instrumental in helping Mississippi State claim back-to-back year wins in the
NCAA Tournament, including the program's first Sweet 16 appearance. Before
Mississippi State, Franklin served at Southeastern Illinois College in
Harrisburg, Illinois, as athletic director, head women’s coach and assistant
men's coach.
Chipola and Northwest are both beneficiaries of the NJCAA’s change to an
expanded tournament bracket which now includes four at-large teams, four ‘zone’
qualifiers and 16 district champions. The 24-team seeded tournament will be
played at the Bicentennial Center in Salina, Kansas.
The national title game will be played on Saturday, March 23. Tournament

SNEADS WIN CHIPOLA 3-POINT SHOOTOUT
MARIANNA—Chai Baker of Malone High and Aaliyah Williams of Sneads High
are the new champions of Chipola College’s Tenth Annual High School Three-Point
Shootout.
Malone High junior Chai Baker made 9 of 15 shots in the men’s finals.
Five other men’s players made it to the championship round of the competition:
Kent Rogers of Altha, Dimitri Simmons of Blountstown, Cason Moore of Holmes
County, Taylor Rousseau of Graceville, Jeremy Wert of Sneads. The
following players also participated in the men’s shootout: Ryan Foor of Chipley,
Zack Gibson of Vernon, Keyman Borders of Marianna, Austin Boyd of Bethlehem,
Nick Dahl of Poplar Springs and Alex Price of Ponce De Leon.
Sneads High’s Aaliyah Williams connected on six shots in the finals to
take the championship in the women’s division. Shanice Mack of Graceville,
Curteeona Brelove of Malone, Summer Potter of Bethlehem, Ashtin McMullian of
Blountstown also made it to the final round. The following players also
participated in the women’s shootout: Shaniah Spellman of Marianna, Jasmine
Belser of Chipley, Kelli McIntosh of Poplar Springs, Ashley Harper of Ponce
DeLeon and Mikayla Moore of Holmes County.
All men’s and women’s high school teams from the Chipola district were
invited to send their best three-point shooters to the competition.
The winners will have their names engraved on a trophy in the Milton H.
Johnson Health Center and on a traveling championship trophy which will be
housed in their respective school’s trophy cases during the coming year.

CHIPOLA BRAIN BOWL WINS SIXTH STRAIGHT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
LAKE CITY—For the sixth straight year, Chipola College has won the State Brain
Bowl
Tournament, defeating Valencia 915-50 in the finals of the Florida College
System
Activities Association Tournament on March 17.
Chipola’s six consecutive championships breaks the old record of five straight
set by Broward College. Broward still has the most state titles with seven.
Chipola also set a record for the largest margin of victory in a final round
with the 915-50 win over Valencia. The Chipola team answered 29 of the 36
questions in the finals.
Chipola MVP Paul Kelson was the David Elhert High Point Winner in the tournament
with 1,120 total points and an average of 131 points per game. Kelson also was
named to the All-Tournament team for the second straight year. Chipola head
Coach Stan Young, says, “Paul Kelson is the best community college player in the
country and maybe the best at any level.”
Other Chipola Blue team members are: Katelyn Miller, William Singleton and Becca
Delgado. Miller finished seventh in individual scoring in the tournament.
The Chipola White Team finished eighth in the State Tournament and was led
Wesley Chevillot who finished eighth in individual scoring. Other Chipola White
members are: Bobby Gause, Jamie McCoy and Faith Tice.
Chipola will next play in the Intercollegiate Championship Tournament (ICT) in
Chicago, April 12-13, as one of only six community colleges invited to the
tournament. Chipola won its third straight NAQT (National Academic Quiz

intelligent people everywhere. We're in this small community college with just
over 2,000 students and we’re competing with Ivy League schools. It just goes to

CHIPOLA TRIO
GRAD NOW RECRUITING FOR FSU/PC CAMPUS
PANAMA CITY—Chipola College graduate Casey Lathem has high praise for the
Chipola College TRIO programs which put her on the path to college. She now
serves as an Admissions Officer with Florida State University/Panama City
recruiting students and advising them on their academic paths.
Lathem was recruited by Chipola’s TRIO program - Talent Search when she
was an eighth grader at Hosford Elementary and Junior High in Liberty County.
The purpose of TRIO is to expose students
to college experiences, and to encourage college enrollment and success in
school. TRIO targets students
early in their academic careers to help them remain focused on their academic
success. TRIO also helps students with study skills, financial aid and
college admissions. Lathem said,
“Having the support of TRIO allowed my twin sister, Kelly, and I to better
understand the process of college-readiness. It is a wonderful program”
As a student at Hosford, Lathem was visited regularly by Kristie Mosley,
former TRIO advisor, current Student Support Services Director of TRIO. Lathem
said, “Ms. Mosley and other members of the TRIO staff helped me understand the
decisions related to attending college as well as which college was right for
me.”
Advisors in TRIO take students on tours of area colleges and universities
to help them choose the college and program that is best suited to their
interests. They also provide information about the financial aid process,
scholarships and grants.
After graduating from Liberty County High School, Lathem chose Chipola
College, where TRIO director Judy Riviere, now retired, advised her through her
Associate in Arts degree. Lathem said, “Not only was Mrs. Riviere my advisor,
she became a mentor as well. Most importantly, she helped me believe that I
could achieve my goals and pursue a bachelor’s degree.
After graduating from Chipola, Lathem transferred to Florida State
University in Panama City where she earned with a Bachelor’s degree in
Professional Communication in 2012. Soon after earning her B.S., she was hired
as an Admissions Officer with FSU/PC. Here job includes recruiting students to
FSU as well as advising them on their major of choice.
Lathem said, “I am truly thankful to have been part of such a great
program. TRIO really does set the foundation students need to succeed. I feel

TRIO was given its name because it started as a group of just three
federally funded programs. There are a total of eight programs that fall under
the umbrella of TRIO. Chipola has two of the eight programs: Talent Search and
Student Support Services. A total of 600 students in the five-county area are
currently enrolled in the TRIO
program - Talent Search. The TRIO program - Student Support Services serves 140
students currently enrolled at Chipola.

THEATRE ATTENDS SOUTHEASTERN THEATRE CONFERENCE
LOUSIVILLE, KY--Students and faculty from the Chipola College Theatre
department recently participated with thousands of students, educators and
professional companies at the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) in
Louisville, Kentucky. SETC is the largest theatrical organization in the
country.
Chipola Director of Technical Theatre Connie Smith serves as
the Job Contact Service Onsite Manager for SETC. In this role, she
oversees production interviews and job placement with more than 110 professional
companies. She also leads a production resume workshop with professional company
representatives on her panel.
Chipola Theater Director Charles Sirmon served the SETC observing more
than 200 high school student auditions and recruiting for his own program.
Sirmon says, “After three days of work, the SETC recognized Chipola and its
strong theatre program. I am very proud of our team.”
Chipola students served as volunteers and recruitment for Chipola. Many
of the Chipola students received offers for summer employment across the
country, including Josh Tetlow with Santa Fe Opera in New Mexico and Aaron Black
with Shenandoah theatre in Winchester, Virginia.

SEMINAR FOR VETERANS SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola
College will offer a free seminar, “What
the Veterans’ Business Outreach Center Can Do for You,” Friday, March 22,
from 9:30 to 12:30 p.m., in Room M-108 of the Chipola Business and Technology
building.
The Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC) helps create, develop, and
retain veteran-owned small business enterprises. The VBOC provides
training through workshops, counseling, assistance, and resource utilization
services to Veterans, Service-Disabled Veterans, Reservists, National Guard, and
Active Duty business owners and entrepreneurs.
The next seminar, “Government
Contracting,” will meet April 19.
Participants will learn how to identify
government agencies and target marketing efforts to save both time and money.
Cost is $30. The first six Chipola students to

CHIPOLA WINS CONFERENCE OPENER AT
TALLAHASSEE
TALLAHASSEE- A seven-run second inning was the catalyst for FCSAA No. 6
Chipola College in a 13-6 win over No. 2 Tallahassee Community College March 18
in the opening game of a three-game series.
Chipola, playing its PC opener, improved to 23-11. Monday's game featured
plenty of offense - the teams combined for 19 runs and 31 hits, including 18 by
Chipola - but it was a defensive play that was, arguably, the biggest of the
game. After Chipola's Bert Givens hit a solo homer in the top of the first,
Tallahassee threatened to answer and then some in its half.
With the bases loaded and two outs, John Price, Jr. hit a hard liner that
had eyes for the right field corner, but Chipola first baseman Chase Nyman dove
to his left and nabbed the one-hopper to save two, possibly three, runs. Instead
of grabbing an early lead, Tallahassee left the bases loaded for the first of
four times in the game.
A leadoff double by Nyman started the Indians' big second inning.
While Chipola took advantage of five hits, two wild pitches, a passed ball and
an error, Tallahassee head coach Mike McLeod trotted out four different pitchers
to try and stop the bleeding.
By the time the last of the four - Ryan Deckert - came on, the Indians
had scored six runs. A fielders' choice plated the seventh run of the inning and
gave Chipola a commanding 8-0 lead.
Tallahassee got on the board in the bottom of the second, scoring three
runs. After a double-play resulted in a run, Clay Fenwick drove in a pair with a
two-out double.
Chipola scored two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth and
was poised to end the game via the mercy rule on two different occasions but,
each time, the Eagles staved off defeat and extended the game.
Down 13-3, Price, Jr., led off the fifth with a triple and scored on
James Abbatinozzi's single to center. An inning later, Price, Jr., picked up an
RBI with a one-out double. In the seventh, Chipola reliever Taylor Lewis hit
three Eagle batters - the last, Trent Higginbothem, with the bases loaded, to
score Kevin Cruz and again keep the game alive.
Five different players enjoyed multi-hit games for Tallahassee - Anthony
Torres, Price, Jr., Abbatinozzi, Tyler York and Kevin Cruz. Fenwick was 1-for-4
with two RBI.
Every Chipola starter collected a hit and scored a run. All but right
fielder Cameron Gibson had at least two hits. Ian Rice went 3-for-4 with a run
scored and an RBI. Givens finished 2-for-6 with two runs scored and three RBI.
Cody Alling took the loss for Tallahassee. He allowed four runs in
one-plus innings. Mikel Belcher, who replaced Chipola starter Carlos Misell
after just 1.2 innings, picked up the win in relief with 3.0 innings of work.
Tallahassee and Chipola will continue its series on Wednesday with a 6
p.m. eastern game in Marianna.

Women win first round game at national tournament
Salina, KS – The Chipola Lady Indians’ postseason run continued Monday
with a 78-62 win over Southwest Illinois in the Women’s Basketball National
Tournament in Salina, Kansas.
Chipola’s Rayven Brooks led the Lady Indians in nearly every category
with 29 points including 6 of 9 three pointers, 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 4
steals. Kristine Brance and Lashonda Littleton each scored 13. Littleton
also grabbed 8 rebounds. Treyvonna Brooks scored 11 and pulled down 8 rebounds.
Jasmine Crawford also added 8 points.
The win pits the Lady Indians (26-6) against Southern Idaho (21-11) in a
3 p.m. game on Wednesday, March 20. The winner moves to the Thursday, March 21,
5 p.m. game to face the winner of Central Arizona (21-1) and Crowder (29-5).

MARIANNA—The
Chipola College District Board of Trustees gave college president Dr. Gene
Prough an excellent rating on his annual performance evaluation which was
presented during the board’s regular monthly meeting on March 19.
All board members rated the president’s performance as excellent, the highest
rating available.
Board members listed several areas of the president’s strengths, including:
great leader with a strong and very good support team; leadership,
honesty, interest in students and faculty; and good manager.
One trustee commented, “Dr. Prough is a super leader in his ability to adjust to
change and the needs of Chipola, its students and staff. He is open to
suggestions from anyone and has a vision for Chipola and its future.” One
trustee commended the president for his leadership during lean budget years,
saying, “With his skills, experience and forward thinking, he has led Chipola
through some very difficult financial times. He continues to guide the college
in a direction that will provide excellent educational opportunities for the
citizens of our region for years to come.”
Another trustee also commended Dr. Prough for his work with the legislature,
saying, “His ability to work with state government is beyond reproach.”
Following the meeting, Prough said, “I consider it a privilege to serve as
president of Chipola College. I appreciate the work of our board of trustees,
faculty and staff as we continue to provide quality educational programs for our
students and the people of this area.”
Prough, a 1968 graduate of Chipola, became the college’s ninth president in
October of 2002. He served as executive vice president of the college from 1997
to 2002. He also served as interim president in 2004-05. Prough first came to
Chipola as Director of Vocational Education in 1994.
During his time as president and executive vice-president, Dr. Prough has provided leadership that enabled the college to obtain more than $30 million in building projects and more than $20 million in federal and state grants. A new entrance road to the college opened in 2011 which leads to the college’s new $16 million Center for the Arts which opened in September, 2012. A new Workforce Development building also was completed in 2011. A new Student Services building was completed in 2005.
Under his leadership, the
college foundation has grown from $2 million to $15 million. Endowments and
scholarships in the foundation have provided millions in direct aid to students.
During Prough’s tenure as president, the college changed its name from Chipola
Junior College to Chipola College in order to offer bachelor’s degrees. Chipola
offers the Associate in Arts (AA) Degree, the Associate in Science (AS) Degree
and Workforce Education programs, and ten bachelor’s degrees in education,
business and nursing.
Prough and his wife, Priscilla, also a Chipola graduate, live in Chipley. Both
of their children and two of their grandchildren are Chipola alumni.

A STRING TO PERFORM FOR CHIPOLA ARTIST SERIES
MARIANNA—Three on a String,
a popular bluegrass, country and comedy group will perform at the Chipola Center
for the Arts, Thursday, April 11, at 7 p.m. This is the final event in the
Chipola College Artist Series.
Three on a String performs all kinds of music - classic old standards, country, bluegrass, and folk mixed with comedy and humor suitable for the entire family. Jerry Ryan, Bobby Horton and Brad Ryan have been having a good time right along with their audiences all over the country for over 40 years. The group has gained a wide following on the convention, music festival, or a symphony pops concert circuit.
Three on a String’s show has
evolved into a well-timed, musically interesting and funny presentation. Their
three-part harmony has a unique and pleasing blend, from a heart-rending country
song to an unexpected a cappella rendition.
