CHIPOLA AWARDS FIRST BACHELOR’S DEGREES
MARIANNA—Chipola College awarded the first bachelor’s degrees in the college's history to 10 graduates of the college's Mathematics Education and Biology Education programs. Eight of the 10 graduates participated in the graduation ceremony on May 5.
Graduates of the program are certified to teach in public schools in Florida. Members of the first class are: Clinton Clemons, Maggie Nesbitt, Salena Grace, Meghan Smith, Tameka Larry, Starr Young, Kim Stevens, Whitney Sims Cherry, Jena Hamm Jeter and David Shuler.
The program recently earned State Approved Teacher Education program by the by the Florida Department of Education’s Bureau of Educator Recruitment Development and Retention. All Teacher Education programs in Florida must meet 19 rigorous standards ranging from faculty and facilities to curriculum and evaluation and assessment. Dr. Kitty Myers, Chipola’s Associate Vice-President of Instruction and Baccalaureate Program Development, said, “We are very proud that our Teacher Education program met all 19 standards. The visiting team was very complimentary of all aspects of our program.”
The DOE review included an application process with reviews and responses and a site visit by a team of educators.
Myers said the Chipola program is designed so that graduates meet all certification requirements before graduation. Minority students in state-approved teacher education programs are eligible for generous scholarships.
Chipola’s first class of 10 future teachers compares favorably with the state university average of 12 graduates per year in science education and 14 in mathematics education.

MARIANNA—Chipola College honored five of its retirees—Mil Cox, Gail Hartzog, Carol Keith, Carolyn Wilson and Annette Widner—at the annual end-of-year luncheon on May 5.
A Jubilee theme served as a backdrop for the event. Some 20 robed Chipola employees formed The Jubilee Retirement Choir to perform the newly-penned hymn “Working at Chipola.” Presentations were the order of the day for the retirees. Bryan Craven delivered a roast of Gail Hartzog, Associate Dean of Planning and Development, highlighting 23 years of service to Chipola. Joan Stadsklev presented a program on Piano Instructor, Dr. Carolyn Wilson, for 38 years at Chipola. Kathy Wheeler and the entire nursing faculty applauded the career of Nursing Instructor Mil Cox, for 11 years of service to the college. Richard Hinson congratulated English instructor Carol Keith for one year of service. Annette Widner, Director of Registration and Admissions, was honored at a reception in April for her 39 years of service.
Chipola president Dr. Gene Prough presented resolutions citing each retiree’s accomplishments. Each also received Chipola Gold Cards that provide free admission for life to college sporting and theater events. Cox, Hartzog and Widner were awarded lifetime memberships in the Florida Association of Community Colleges.
The event was sponsored by the Council of Chipola Educators (CCE).

ROMANCERS PLAYS THURSDAY AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—The Chipola Theater production of the Children’s play, “The Romancers,” is set for Thursday, May 12, at 7 p.m., in the Chipola Theater.
General admission tickets—$5—are on sale in the college Business Office.
The comedy is based on the book by Edmon Rostand. Chipola director Charles Sirmon, says, “This hilarious show draws from Rostand’s main plotline and infuses it with characters, scenarios and a commedia dell’arte performance style which originated in the streets during the early Italian Renaissance.”
According to Sirmon, the Italian street performers used acrobatic skills and physical comedy to help establish commedia as a genre of theatre in the mid-1500s.

Chipola Student Accepted into BMW Training Program
MARIANNA—Chipola College Automotive Technology student Brandon McDaniel was recently accepted into the prestigious BMW training program.
Chipola automotive instructor John Gardner, said, “As a direct result of his NATEF training received in Chipola’s automotive program, along with finishing top in his class, BMW offered Brandon a contract.” McDaniel will receive tuition of $10,208, moving expenses and a guaranteed job at a USA BMW dealership upon completion of the rigorous 16-week training program. He will begin training in Orlando in September.
Only 10 students are accepted into the BMW program every 16 weeks. Gardner said, “Brandon’s achievement, dedication and hard work afforded him the opportunity to attend the BMW program. He speaks volumes for the Chipola learning experience.” McDaniel shadowed the Chipola program while a student Jackson Academy of Applied Technology, and enrolled at Chipola at the age of 16. He already has passed four National ASE exams and is scheduled to take the remaining four needed to earn Master Certification.
Gardner said, “Brandon’s parents have been involved in his training and are a big part of his success. I am very proud and have no doubt Brandon will excel in the BMW program and earn a salary in excess of $50,000 a year doing something he loves.”

HONORS ENDOWMENT ESTABLISHED AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Foundation has established an Honors Fund and Endowment to support the Chipola Honors Program.
Several Chipola board members initiated the fund with personal contributions. Donations also have come from current faculty and staff as well as retired employees.
The first corporate contribution has come from Metric Engineering which has also pledged an annual contribution.
According to Bonnie Smith, who directs the Sophomore Honors program, “The goal of the Honors program is to equip our local leaders of tomorrow with an awareness and understanding which will improve the lives of our citizens. This fund and endowment will provide resources for the many annual projects of the Honors Program. It is Chipola’s goal to help our academically-talented students to gain greater awareness and insight so that they may approach the future with the knowledge and skills that will continue to make America the leader in democracy, free enterprise, and hope.”
Smith said the program will need support from citizens who value academics. Smith and Robert Ivey, who directs the freshman Honors group, hope to bring in thought-provoking speakers and to take students to visit educational sites in other cities.

CHIPOLA BASEBALL TEAM WINS FIRST ROUND OF STATE TOURNEY
MARIANNA—The Chipola Indians just beat Seminole CC, 2-1, in the first round of the FCCAA State Baseball tournament on Friday, May 6.
The game was tied 1-1 through the bottom of the tenth inning when Chipola freshman Keltavious Jones knocked a base hit to center field to score David Cash and end the game.
Steven Brock was the winning pitcher. He threw 1 and 2/3 innings in relief of Clay Long.
The Indians will play either Miami-Dade or St. Pete on Saturday, May 7 at 6 p.m. CST. The double-elimination tournament runs through Tuesday, May 10. State tournament games will be broadcast on WJAQ 100.9 and webcast on www.chipola.edu
The Indians captured the 2005 Panhandle Conference Championship with an 18-7 league record and a 32-18 overall finish. Pensacola will play in the state tournament as the Panhandle Runner-Up.
In nine seasons at the helm of the Chipola program, Johnson has a combined record of 303-162 and has advanced to the state Region VII tournament five times including this year. Chipola finished second in the state in 2002 and 2001, and third in 1998.
Chipola has won the Panhandle Conference Championship trophy three times in the last five years. Coach Johnson has sent 66 players on to either professional baseball or to four-year college programs.

CHIPOLA IS STATE APPROVED TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM

This is a significant event in the history of Chipola because this program will benefit our local schools, our community, and our students,” Myers said.

Chipola began its quest to offer four-year degrees in 2001 when the Florida Legislature passed a bill allowing community colleges to apply to offer bachelor’s degrees. In 2002 the Florida Board of Education gave Chipola the authority to offer four-year degrees in Secondary Education in response to a critical shortage of math and science teachers. The Board adopted a plan to offer four-year degrees in selected disciplines on the campuses of Chipola and Miami-Dade Community Colleges. Former Education Secretary Jim Horne granted Chipola the authority to offer a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Math and Science Education. Horne said he adopted Chipola’s proposal in the interest of local students. “The Chipola approach was constructed to provide greater program delivery flexibility for community members,” Horne said.
In August of 2003, the Chipola District Board of Trustees voted to change the name of the 57-year-old institution to Chipola College. Chipola’s first-ever Bachelor’s degree students began classes in January of 2004.

Chipola College president Dr. Gene Prough said, “Chipola opened its doors in the Fall of 1947 to provide opportunity for the people in this area. Now, 58 years later, we congratulate Chipola’s first four-year graduates. They will go down in Chipola history as the first group of students who made the most of this new opportunity.”
In 2004, Chipola officials promised free tuition to the first 20 students to enroll in the program. According to Dr. Kitty Myers, Chipola’s Associate Vice-President of Instruction and Baccalaureate Program Development, the college has kept that promise. “None of our bachelor’s degree students has had to pay out-of-pocket expenses for tuition,” Myers said. The Chipola Foundation still maintains a fund for students who enroll in the program.
The new Chipola program recently earned State Approved Teacher Education program status by the Florida Department of Education.
Graduates of the Chipola Teacher Education program are certified to teach math or science in middle or high school. Students who have completed most of the work towards an AA degree, and who have a strong background in math or science, are encouraged to apply.

DAVID COLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—The Jackson County Republican Executive Committee made the lead donation of $1,000 to establish the David Coley Memorial Scholarship at Chipola College.
Coley was elected to the Florida House of Representatives District 7 seat in November of 2004. He died of liver cancer in March. Coley also worked at Chipola as a Special Services Coordinator for the college’s Bachelor’s Degree programs. He was a Chipola graduate in the class of 1982.
Coley formerly served as an aide to Florida House Speaker Allan Bense. He also was a congressional aide to former U.S. Rep. Bill Grant and was aide to former Florida Representatives Robert Trammell and Jamey Westbrook.
Chipola President Dr. Gene Prough, said, “This is a fitting tribute to David. He believed in helping people, and this scholarship will help many students realize the dream of a college education.”

CHIPOLA AWARDED AT PHI THETA KAPPA CONVENTION
GRAPEVINE, TEXAS—The Chipola College Nu Chi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa received the Leadership Hallmark Award and Waylon Lewis won the Distinguished Chapter President Award at the recent 2005 Phi Theta Kappa International Convention in Grapevine, Texas. Nearly 500 chapters competed for the Society's most coveted awards. The Hallmark Awards Program is the society's capstone competition annually recognizing excellence in programs that promote the Hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship.
The Chipola Chapter also was named Most Distinguished Chapter in the Florida Region at the Regional Convention earlier this year. Chipola won all four Regional Hallmarks in Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship. Chipola sophomore Ashley Melzer won second place in the Nota Bene Award for the Florida Region. Sophomore Chris Shaw won second in the Speech Contest.
Chipola students—Brandon Sasser, Paige Rentz and Lauren Eade—were among only 20 students nationwide to be named Guistwhite Scholars. Lauren Eade won all five of PTK’s major awards: Leaders of Promise Scholarship, Coca Cola Scholarship,
All USA Today First Team, New Century Scholar and Guistewhite.

Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society of the Two-Year College. The Society is comprised of more than 1,200 chapters at community, technical and junior colleges in all 50 states, Canada, Germany and U.S. territories abroad, making it the largest and most prestigious honor society serving two-year colleges. Membership is based primarily upon academic achievement. MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer programs for children of all ages this summer.
Swimming lessons will be offered for ages four and up. Lessons are based on a combination of nationally-recognized methods. The following sessions are scheduled: Session 1: May 23-June 3 (No class on Memorial day); Session 2: June 6-16; Session 3: June 20-30; and Session 4: July 11-21. Classes are available at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. or 6:45 p.m. Sessions include eight 45-minute lessons. Cost is $40 and pre-registration is required, with a $5 fee for late registration. CHIPOLA INDIANS FINISH SECOND IN STATE BASEBALL TOURNEY
KISSIMMEE—The Chipola Indians finished second in the state in the Florida Community College State Baseball tournament played May 5-10 in Kissimmee.
Chipola also finished second in the state in 2002 and 2001, and third in 1998.
Chipola won three of five games in the tournament finishing with a 3-0 loss to St. Petersburg College in the final game of the tourney on May 10.
The Indians opened the FCCAA series with a 2-1 win over Seminole on May 6. Chipola was forced into the consolation bracket after a 3-2 loss to St. Pete on May 7. The Indians got back on track with a big 9-6 win over conference foe Pensacola on May 8. Chipola scored a decisive 11-3, eight-inning win over Daytona Beach on May 9.
Chipola pitcher Matt Gamel was named Player of the Year for his performance this season. He also was named First Team FCCAA All State/Region VIII. Jason Lewis and Travis Anderson were named to the FCCAA All State/Region VIII Second Team.
The Indians captured the 2005 Panhandle Conference Championship with an 18-7 league record and a 39-19 overall finish. Matt Gamel won Panhandle Conference Player of the Year honors. A total of eight Indians were named to the All-Conference team, including: First Team members Matt Gamel, Justin Byler, Travis Anderson, Jason Lewis, and Liam Shanahan; and Second Team members Vladimir Frias, Dave Cash and Clay Long.
Chipola head coach Jeff Johnson was named Conference Coach of the Year.
In nine seasons at the helm of the Chipola program, Johnson has a combined record of 310-163 and has advanced to the state Region VIII tournament five times. Chipola has won the Panhandle Conference Championship trophy three times in the last five years. Coach Johnson has sent 66 players on to either professional baseball or to four-year college programs.

CHIPOLA GRADS TEAM UP IN DENTAL PRACTICE
MARIANNA—Chipola College alumnus Dr. Jeremy Lewis will join the Marianna Dental Practice of fellow alumnus Dr. Larry Cook on June 6.
Both dentists graduated from the University of Florida’s College of Dentistry and both agree that Chipola provided the academic foundation that helped them succeed in dental school.
Dr. Lewis graduated from Chipola in 1999. He earned a B.S. in Nutritional Science before being accepted into dental school. He recently won an Award of Merit from the Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry. “I wouldn’t do it any other way,” Lewis said. “When I attended Chipola, I lived in the math and science departments and I received great instruction from teachers like Dr. (Bill) Brievogel, Dr. (Jeff) Bodart, Dr. (Steve) Shimmel and Bonnie Smith. I would highly recommend Chipola to anyone who wants to get a solid background before going off to a large university.”
Dr. Larry Cook, who has been in practice since 1979, also has high praise for his local alma mater. “I’m not sure that everyone realizes what a fine college we have right here in Marianna,” said Cook. “The Chipola faculty does a super job of preparing students to do well in very challenging programs at the university. I owe a great deal to my Chipola professors who gave me a solid academic foundation.”
Of his new associate Dr. Cook said, “Marianna is gaining an exceptional dentist with an outstanding academic record. I am excited about the opportunity to work with such a promising young professional and fellow Chipola alumnus.”
Dr. Lewis comes from a family of health care professionals who also started at Chipola. His father Rodney Lewis graduated from Chipola before earning a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. His mother Delilah Lewis is a Registered Nurse who earned her degree from Chipola. The new Dr. Lewis is married to the former Shelaina Mercer of Dellwood, who also graduated from Chipola and UF.
When asked about his decision to associate with Dr. Cook, Lewis said, “I always heard he (Cook) was the best, and I wanted to learn from the best. I know it will help me to work under an established dentist with an excellent reputation. I want to keep learning to provide quality care for my patients.”

MARIANNA—Math instructor Jo Ann Everett was chosen by her peers to receive the Kirkland Award for Excellence in Teaching at the 2005 Chipola College graduation.
Everett has taught math at Chipola since 1986. She was the first instructor in the Chipola Mathematics Lab, a learning center which provides free tutoring and computer-assisted help in math and science courses.
Everett represented the faculty as a charter member of the Governance Council and currently serves on the Residence Hall committee. She is past secretary-treasurer of the Chipola Faculty Association and former board member of the Chipola Council of Educators.
As chair of Chipola’s Program Review for Developmental Mathematics, she has served on statewide teams to prepare questions for the CLAST. She also developed a summer review to help students prepare for the CPT (Computerized Placement Test). She represented Chipola last year at a Developmental Mathematics Conference. She also has served as sponsor of the Chipola Cheerleaders.
The faculty member who nominated Everett said, “Jo Ann is an exceptional teacher. Her special talents made a profound impact on the mathematics program. She has a unique ability to motivate students to become productive and to support their fellow students. She is truly the type of teacher, counselor and coworker that represents the best of Chipola.”
A 1981 graduate of Chipola, Everett also earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of West Florida. She is married to Dennis Everett, Chipola’s Associate Vice President of Information Systems. The couple has a daughter, Katie, a first grader. Everett said, “I believe in Chipola. I know this college will continue to focus on academic excellence far into the future. I’m sure that my daughter Katie will attend Chipola one day and will receive an outstanding education.”
The Kirkland Award was endowed 15 years ago by brothers J. R. and David Kirkland in honor of their parents Carolyn and the late Willis Kirkland of Marianna. The award provides $1,000 to the recipient. Previous winners include faculty emeriti Donald Holley, Paul Huang, Don Adams, Peggy Register, Charlene Lord and Lonnie Keene, former instructor Jean Taylor and current instructors Brenda Alford, Dr. Stephen Shimmel, Mary McClendon, Nancy Burns, Dr. Lou Cleveland, Dr. Bill Brievogel, Kathryn Roberts and Rose Cavin.

MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer programs for children of all ages this summer.
Swimming lessons will be offered for ages four and up. The following sessions are scheduled: Session 1: May 23-June 3 (No class on Memorial day); Session 2: June 6-16; Session 3: June 20-30; and Session 4: July 11-21. Classes are available at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. or 6:45 p.m. Sessions include eight 45-minute lessons. Cost is $40 and pre-registration is required, with a $5 fee for late registration. Infant and Preschool Swimming lessons for children 3 and under will meet from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. Session 1 is July 5-8. Session 2 is July 25-28. Cost is $25. Call Continuing Education at 718-2395.
