SUMMER CLASSES BEGIN TUESDAY AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA— Registration for Summer Session I classes is Monday, May 7, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Classes begin Tuesday, May 8. Late registration continues through noon on May 9.
Online registration is available for students who qualify.
College officials have added classes at more convenient times as well as new classes that extend from Summer I to Summer II. More than 30 evening courses and six distance learning courses are available during the two six-week summer sessions. Several classes—including ENC 1101, ENC 1102 and Humanities and French—have been extended to run for 12 weeks rather than 6.
New students who take at least one class during either summer term may register early for Fall 2007 classes.

Chipola offers the Associate in Arts Degree, the Associate in Science Degree, Workforce Development programs and Bachelor of Science Degrees in Secondary and Middle School Education with majors in Math and Science.
Business majors are encouraged to contact the college for information on a new Bachelor’s of Applied Science degree in Business Management slated to begin in January of 2008.

MASONSRY MEETING SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Contractors, masons and those interested in masonry training are invited to attend a dinner at Chipola College on May 23 at 6 p.m.
The Chipola Division of Workforce Development will host the meeting in room located in Building 0-Workforce Development on campus.
The purpose of the meeting is to finalize plans for the Masonry Apprentice Training program scheduled to begin in August and to register the employees of licensed masonry contractors for the program.
Al Herndon with the Florida Masonry Education Foundation will be present to walk contractors through the process of entering the program.

CHIPOLA PICKS UP ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Indians picked up top honors in the All-Panhandle Conference selections for the 2006-07 regular season.
Chipola head coach Jeff Johnson was named Panhandle Coach of the Year. Thom Hatcher picked up Player of the Year honors. Kevin McCoy was named Fireman of the Year and Jesus Barroso earned Defensive Player of the Year honors.
A total of seven Indians made the All Panhandle Conference list, including: First-Team picks Jesus Barroso, Daniel Renfroe, Thom Hatcher, Trey Manz, Brandon Street and Kevin McCoy, and Second-Team selection Drew Parker.
The Indians captured the Panhandle Conference championship with a 19-6 conference mark and a 31-17 overall record.
Chipola will represent the Panhandle in the FCCAA State Tournament, May 3-8, at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, FL. The Indians play Manatee at noon (CST), Friday, May 4, in the double-elimination tournament.
All Chipola state tournament games will be broadcast on WJAQ-100.9 FM.

CHIPOLA PICKS UP SCHOOL’S FIRST STATE SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
AUBURNDALE, FL—The Lady Indians captured Chipola College’s first-ever state softball title with a 1-0 win over Miami-Dade College, Sunday, May 6, in the FCCAA Gulf District Florida Softball Tournament.
The defensive battle was scoreless for six innings when Chipola third baseman Tori Fobb reached first on a single in the bottom of the seventh. A sacrifice fly advanced her to second. Fobb moved to third on a passed ball and then scored the winning run on another passed ball. Pitcher Cassie Lassiter earned the win for Chipola.
The Lady Indians beat Gulf Coast 6-1 on May 5 to win the Gulf Coast District 8B side of the bracket. Chipola also beat Gulf Coast 5-4 on May 4. The Lady Indians opened tournament play with a 12-1 win over Pasco-Hernando and a 10-0 win over Tallahassee, both on May 4.
Chipola head coach Belinda Hendrix, the Panhandle coach of the year, is in her third season at the helm of the Lady Indians program. Chipola sophomore pitcher Brittany Minton of Bainbridge, GA, was named Tournament MVP. Lady Indians Sarah Lovestrand, Areke Spel, Cassie Lassiter and Alyssa Shirey were named to the All Tournament team.
Chipola will represent Florida in the 2007 NJCAA Division I Softball National Championship, May 17-19, at the Plant City Stadium in Plant City, FL.
Chipola’s athletic program is enjoying tremendous success this year. In addition to the 2007 state softball title, Chipola’s men’s and women’s basketball teams both picked up state titles in March. As of May 6, Chipola’s baseball squad is undefeated in the state baseball tournament and could make it a clean, four-sport sweep.

CHIPOLA WINS STATE BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP,
SETS RECORD FOR FOUR STATE TITLES IN SINGLE SEASON
WINTER HAVEN, FL—The Chipola College Indians made history when they captured the Florida Junior College Baseball Championship Tuesday, May 8, with a 12-2 win over Central Florida Community College.
The baseball championship puts Chipola in the Florida record books as the only community college to win four state championships in a single season. The Lady Indians picked up the college’s first state championship in softball on Sunday, May 6. The Chipola men’s and women’s basketball teams won their respective state tournaments in March. Miami-Dade is the only Florida junior college to win three state titles which they accomplished in 1971 and 1976.
Chipola’s only other state baseball title came under coach Bobby Pierce in 1983. Chipola chalked up 18 hits on the day and committed only two errors. Four Indians had three hits apiece: Paul Gatchel, Jesus Barroso, Tom Hatcher and Logan Pierce.
Drew Parker was the winning pitcher for Chipola in the championship game. He pitched a total of 13 innings in the tournament. Marianna native Josh Storm pitched in last inning of the championship game. When asked if he felt any pressure to join his fellow Chipola coaches as 2007 state champs, Chipola baseball coach Jeff Johnson said, “What a great team and what a great administration we have at the college that could put us in position to do this. Our guys played an outstanding game and showed great heart. We battled hard and did a great job hitting and bunting. We executed all the little things that we’ve been talking about all year long.”
The Indians were unbeaten in the state tournament beginning with a 7-6 win over Manatee on May 4. Chipola overcame Palm Beach 6-4 on May 5. The Indians landed a spot in the title game with a 4-3 win over Manatee on May 7. The Indians finished the season with a 36-17 record.

MARIANNA—“Just Under the Surface,” an art exhibit by Jeremy Colbert, will be on display in the gallery of the McLendon Fine Arts building at Chipola College, May 14 through June 8, Monday through Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The original works include creations of wood, cast iron, found objects, paper, rope, mixed media and video.
Colbert teaches sculpture and ceramics at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. He earned an MFA from Florida State University in Sculpture and Ceramics. Colbert says, “The exhibition is a body of work reflective of a rediscovery through evaluation of ones self.”

MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer programs for children of all ages this summer.
Swimming lessons will be offered for ages four and up. Lessons are based on a combination of nationally-recognized methods. The following sessions are scheduled: Session 1: May 29–June 7; Session 2: June 18–28; Session 3: July 9-19; and Session 4: July 30-Aug. 9. Classes are available at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. or 7:00 p.m. Sessions are Monday through Thursday for two weeks of 45-minute lessons. Cost is $45 and pre-registration is required, with a $5 late registration fee. Infant and Preschool Swimming lessons for children 3 and under will meet June 11-14 and July 23-27 with classes available at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Cost is $30. MARIANNA—“Just Under the Surface,” an art exhibit by Jeremy Colbert, will be on display in the gallery of the McLendon Fine Arts building at Chipola College through June 8, Monday through Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The original works include creations of wood, cast iron, found objects, paper, rope, mixed media and video.
Colbert teaches sculpture and ceramics at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. He earned an MFA from Florida State University in Sculpture and Ceramics. Colbert says, “The exhibition is a body of work reflective of a rediscovery through evaluation of ones self.”

CHIPOLA SOFTBALL TO PLAY IN NATIONAL TOURNAMENT THURSDAY
PLANT CITY— Chipola will represent Florida in the 2007 NJCAA Division I Softball National Championship, May 17-19, at the Plant City Stadium in Plant City, FL.
Chipola faces Crowder College (MO) in the first round of the tournament at 11 a.m. EST, Thursday, May 17. Win or lose, the Lady Indians will play again at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
The Lady Indians captured Chipola College’s first-ever state softball title with a 1-0 win over Miami-Dade College, May 6, in the FCCAA Gulf District Florida Softball Tournament. The Lady Indians enter the national tournament as the number one seed after spending more than two months on top of the NJCAA Softball poll and the FCCAA State poll.

Chipola head coach Belinda Hendrix, the Panhandle coach of the year, is in her third season at the helm of the Lady Indians program. Chipola sophomore pitcher Brittany Minton of Bainbridge, GA, was named MVP of the Florida State Tournament. Lady Indians Sarah Lovestrand, Areke Spel, Cassie Lassiter and Alyssa Shirey all were named to the All Tournament team.
Chipola players top several of the state’s individual stats lists. Amber Weeks leads the state in pitching with a 7-1 record and a .520 ERA. Cassie Lassiter is Florida’s sixth best hurler with a 22-2 record with a .763 ERA and 95 strikeouts. Brittany Minton is ninth with 16-2 mark and a .848 ERA and 130 strikeouts.
Tiffany Harmon is fourth on the state’s stolen base list with 46 steals in 47 tries. Martina Landrum is Florida’s second best hitter with a .487 batting average. She has 58 hits in 47 games, and has stolen 34 bases in 34 attempts. Sara Lovestrand is fifth in the state in batting with a .463 average. Alyssa Shirey is ninth with a .449 average. Megan Whitehead is 16th in hitting with a .413 average and Tori Fobb rounds out the top 25, hitting .391.

CHIPOLA BASEBALL TEAM HEADED TO NATIONALS
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Indians will represent Florida and Region VIII in the NJCAA National Baseball Tournament, May 26, in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Chipola will play in the first game of the double-elimination tournament at 9 a.m. (EST), Saturday, May 26. Games will be broadcast on WJAQ 100.9 FM and are available on the web at www.chipola.edu
A win in the first round would give the Indians Sunday off and a spot in the 7:30 p.m. game on Monday, May 28. A loss would force Chipola into the 10 a.m. game on Sunday, May 27.
The championship game of the tournament is scheduled for Friday, June 1 at 7:30 p.m.; however, the game could be played as late as Saturday, June 2.
The Chipola College Indians made history when they captured the Florida Junior College Baseball Championship Tuesday, May 8, with a 12-2 win over Central Florida.
The baseball title put Chipola in the Florida record books as the only community college to win four state championships in a single season, in addition to titles in softball and men’s and women’s basketball. Chipola’s only other state baseball title came under coach Bobby Pierce in 1983.
Several Chipola baseball players are among the best in the state. Jesus Barroso and Brandon Street lead the Indians offense, each hitting .341 on the season. Street has 42 RBI’s in 51 games. A total of nine Indians are batting better than .300.
Tom Hatcher leads the state in homeruns with 11 and is second on the state RBI list with 59. Trey Manz has six homers on the year.
Three Chipola hurlers are among the best in Florida. Kevin McCoy is 4-0 with 55 strikeouts and a 1.705 ERA. Drew Parker is 6-2 with 59 strikeouts and a 2.577 ERA. Ryan Chaffee (6-2) is number two in the state in strikeouts with 75 in 60 innings.
The Indians’ two closers are in the state’s top 20. Daniel Jones is tenth in the state with four saves in 46 innings of work. Josh Storm is number 15 on the state saves list with four saves in 15 innings.
The Indians (36-17) are perfect in the post-season with four wins in the state tournament including a 12-2 win over Central Florida, a 6-4 win over Palm Beach and a pair of wins over Manatee, 4-3 and 7-6.
In 11 seasons at the helm of the Chipola baseball program, head coach Jeff Johnson has advanced to the state tournament seven times. The Indians finished second in the state tournament in 2005, 2002 and 2001, third in 1998, and among the top four in 2006.
Chipola has won the Panhandle Conference championship six times in the last seven years. Coach Johnson has guided more than 75 players on to professional baseball or to four-year college programs.

CHIPOLA WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN SOFTBALL
PLANT CITY—The Chipola Lady Indians softball team captured the 2007 NJCAA Division I Softball National Championship with a 6-3 win over Northern Idaho, Saturday, May 19, in Plant City, FL.
The Lady Indians scored three runs in the top of the third and added three more in the eighth to take the college’s first national championship in softball.
Chipola scored three in the third after Martina Landrum walked, stole 2nd, and was batted forward to home. Tiffany Harmon singled, stole 2nd, and was batted in to score. Christal Kotchman singled and scored.
Northern Idaho tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh. In extra innings in the top of the 8th, Sara Lovestrand reached on an error, stole 2nd, and was batted forward to home. Cassie Lassiter reached on a bunt stole 2nd, and was batted home. Tori Fobb doubled, and was batted home. Carolyn Moore doubled for one RBI.
Brittany Minton was the wining pitcher for the Lady Indians. She threw 1 and two-thirds innings. Cassie Lassiter threw four innings and Amber Weeks pitched 2 and one third innings.
The Lady Indians only loss of the tournament came earlier in the day on Saturday to Northern Idaho, 5-4. It was Chipola’s only loss of the post-season. Chipola finished with a 57-6 record.
Southern Idaho lost their opening game of the tournament and climbed out of the loser’s bracket to win seven straight.
The Lady Indians helped make Florida history earlier this month when they won the FCCAA State Championship, one of four state titles Chipola won this season. Head coach Belinda Hendrix completed her third season at the helm of the Lady Indians program.
Chipola’s only other national championship was in men’s golf in the 1960’s.
Chipola began the national tournament with a 3-0 win over Crowder College (MO) in the first round on Thursday. The Lady Indians scored a 2-1 win over McLennan College Thursday. On Friday, Chipola scored a 3-0 win over Miami Dade and a 5-2 win over Eastern Arizona. The Lady Indians lost to Northern Idaho, 5-4, before rebounding to win the title game over Northern Idaho, 6-3.
The Lady Indians entered the national tournament as the number one seed after spending more than two months on top of the NJCAA Softball poll and the FCCAA State poll.
