MARIANNA--Chipola will play Manatee CC in the first round of the Florida
Community College State Baseball Tournament in Kissimmee, Wednesday, May 9, at
Noon (CST). The Indians will depart Marianna from the CJC Dorm at 7 a.m.,
Tuesday, May 8.
Chipola head coach Jeff Johnson is optimistic about the Indians' chances.
"Anytime you get into a state championship, all the teams are going to be
good. But the team that plays with a lot of heart and that plays best as a team
will come out on top. We've got as good a chance as anybody," says Johnson.
This is Johnson's fifth year at CJC and his third trip to the state tournament. The
Indians finished the regular season as Panhandle Conference Champions, ranked
third in the state with a 13-7 league record, and 37-14 overall.
The chief Indian says fourth-ranked Manatee CC will give the Indians a
tough first round game. "Manatee has a good program. Their offensive stats
and pitching stats are a little better than ours, and their players are as good
as ours, with a lot of D-1 signees and draft picks," says Johnson.
A win Wednesday would move Chipola to the 3 p.m. game on Thursday to meet
the winner of Palm Beach and Central Florida. A loss would send Chipola to the 9
a.m. Thursday game to play the loser of Palm and Central. The Championship game
of the tourney is set for 4 p.m., Saturday.
Chipola's offense is led by some heavy hitters, including All Conference
picks Ricardo Nanita, batting .405; Jonathon Swearingen of Marianna who is
hitting .356; Ivan Naccarata at .355, with 9
homeruns; and Jose Bautista at .301 with 13 homeruns.
Leading Indian pitchers are Kyle Olson (7-1) with a 2.65 ERA; Sam Taulli
(5-3); and starter/reliever Jose Bautista (5-0-5) with a 2.25 ERA. Kyle
Pawelczyk, (2-0-2) with a 1.75 ERA, has a nagging back injury that may limit his
tournament action. Bautista and Swearingen have already inked deals with D-1
schools. Bautista is headed to the University of South Carolina. Swearingen has
signed with Ole Miss.
The state Top 10 include: (1) St. Petersburg, (2) Miami-Dade, (3) Chipola,
(4) Manatee, (5) Palm Beach, (6) Central Florida, (7) Lake City, (8) Okaloosa-Walton,
(9) Indian River and (10) Gulf Coast. OW
is runner-up in the Panhandle Conference.
The Indians' tournament games will be broadcast by Russell Register of
Deep South Sports on WJAQ, 100.9 FM, and may be accessed on the web at
www.wjaq1009.com

MARIANNA—
The Chipola Indians made school history when they finished second in the FCCAA
State Baseball Championship May 13 in Kissimmee.
The
2001 Indians became only the second Chipola team to make it to the championship
game of the state tournament. The 1983 Indians won the championship.
This
was head coach Jeff Johnson's third trip to the state tourney in just five
seasons at the helm of the Indian program. Chipola finished the season 43-16
with a Panhandle Conference Championship and a State Runner-Up Trophy.
Chipola
lost to top-ranked Miami-Dade CC 8-3 in the championship game of the tourney on
Sunday. The Indians lost to Manatee 4-3 on Saturday, but the game was
inconsequential as CJC was guaranteed a spot in the championship game after
winning their first three games in the tourney. Chipola began the tourney with a 5-4 come from behind win
over Manatee on May 9. CJC racked up a 17-11 win over Palm Beach on May 10, and
an 8-4 win over St. Petersburg on May 11.
Two
Indians were named to the All-Tournament team. Pitcher/infielder Jose Bautista
was named tournament MVP. He pitched a complete nine-inning game striking out 7
batters. Bautista has signed with the University of South Carolina.
Marianna
native Jonathon Swearingen was named All Tournament infielder. He has signed
with Ole Miss. Several other Indians also are being courted by Division 1
colleges.

FAMILY OF THE LATE ROBERT CRISP
DONATES LAND TO CHIPOLA
MARIANNA--The
family of the late Robert F. Crisp recently donated a piece of land in his
memory to the Chipola Junior College Foundation that may prove very useful to
the college.
The
property, located at 4492 River Forest Rd., also borders Caverns Rd. The
triangle shaped parcel is 300' X 301' X 300' and includes a two-story building
which served as Mrs. Yancey's Supper Club during the operation of Graham Air
Base in the late 1940's and early 50's.
Dr.
Gene Prough, CJC executive vice president, said the property is part of the
long-range dreams for the college and may include a sign directing visitors to
the college. Foundation president Kenneth Stoutamire agrees that the gift will
be of great value to the college.
Robert
Crisp was a CJC alumnus who played basketball at Chipola in the early
50's. His surviving
family includes wife Patricia Crisp; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mr. and
Mrs. Ernest Davis and children Robert, Matt and Amanda; Mr. and Mrs. Kris Kuyk
and children David and Daniel, and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bennett.
The family also has established the Robert F. Crisp Memorial Scholarship
Endowment at CJC.
