DR. J.R. KIRKLAND TO VISIT CHIPOLA COLLEGE
MARIANNA—Dr. J.R. Kirkland, a Chipola College alumnus and founder of a
Washington-based government relations firm, will address the Chipola Honors
Seminar, Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m., in Jackson Hall.
College officials also are planning a reception in Kirkland’s honor to recognize
his contribution of a significant history collection to the college Library. The
reception is set for 2 p.m. in the Library. The public is invited to both
events.
Dr. Kirkland graduated from Chipola in 1960 and was named Chipola’s Alumnus of
the Year in 2000. He said that his successful career owes much to the teaching
he received at Chipola. “I have many fond and strong memories of a number of
faculty and administrators,” Kirkland said.
Dr. Kirkland is founder and President of FBA Inc., a
government relations firm that represents colleges and universities,
associations, foundations and private sector companies in their work with
Congress, the White House and Executive Agencies of the federal government.
In 1990 Kirkland and his brother, David, endowed the Kirkland Award for
Excellence in Teaching at Chipola in honor of their parents Carolyn and the late
Willis Kirkland. The award was the first at Chipola to recognize outstanding
teaching.
Dr. Kirkland has a special interest and expertise in the interrelationship of
federal science policies and programs and the research communities of technology
firms and American universities. During the past 20 years, he has directed
numerous business and academic coalitions that have secured federal funding for
research in advanced computing, neurosciences, nanotechnology and various health
related fields.
Also, Dr. Kirkland has led initiatives in the application of advanced technology
to education and training programs, and has extensive experience in the field of
distance learning and health care delivery to remote areas. He serves on a
number of advisory boards that recommend policies and programs to state and
federal government agencies to promote economic development through cooperative
relationships.
In addition to his business activities, Dr. Kirkland has served in numerous
positions in education and government. The holder of a Ph. D in American
History from the University of North Carolina, he has been a professor at
Cornell University, American University, and Heidelberg University in Germany.
Currently, he is Senior Research Fellow of the IC Squared Institute at the
University of Texas, Austin, and chairs the Graduate Education Advisory Board at
the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He has staffed and has
served as advisor to a number of Congressmen and Senators. He served as a
member of the White House Domestic Policy Staff, and was a Director of the 1980
Conference on Small Business.
A resident of the Washington D. C. area since 1965, Dr. Kirkland is married and
has four children. His wife Martha is Executive Director of the American
Occupational Therapy Foundation.

CHIPOLA STUDENTS ATTEND FAST
CONFERENCE
ST. AUGUSTINE—Chipola College Science Education and Elementary Education
bachelor’s degree students Rebekah Carnley, Rebecca Hambly, James McCalvin,
Jessica Whittington and Cassandra Witt, recently attended the Florida
Association of Science Teachers (FAST) conference in St. Augustine.
Dr. Santine Cuccio, Chipola science education facilitator, accompanied the students to the conference where educators from Florida and other states conferred, planned lessons, and networked. Students met with astronauts, scientists and other veteran teachers; and attended demonstrations and lectures on magnetism, genetics, energy conservation, and ecology.
Participating students stated that both their content knowledge and pedagogy
were reinforced and extended. Conference vendors provided the students
with sample textbooks, instructional materials, CD’s and DVD’s to use in their
classrooms.
Students who attended the conference will share some of the outstanding teaching
strategies at the Future Educator’s Club Teacher Workshop on January 22, 2011.
The conference held on the Chipola campus is free to all district educators.

LINDBERGH SHOW COMING TO
CHIPOLA COLLEGE
MARIANNA—Charles Lindbergh: The Lone Eagle, the second event in the Chipola
College Artist Series, will be presented Nov. 9.
Individual event tickets - $12 for adults

“The Lone Eagle” was just one of many nicknames given
to Lindbergh by the press after he became the first pilot to fly nonstop from
New York to Paris in May of 1927.
This one- man play written and portrayed by Steve Carroll spans Lindbergh’s life
as he returns from the grave to set the record straight about his life. Guests
will learn of his early barnstorming days, the famous flight to Paris, his son’s
kidnapping, the unpopular stance he took against entering WWII, his subsequent
heroism as a fighter pilot, and his final days as a world renowned

OLYMPIC SOFTBALL
PLAYERS COMING TO CHIPOLA COLLEGE
MARIANNA—Area softball players will have the once-in-a-lifetime chance to
work with three team USA Olympic medalists at the Chipola College Softball
field, Jan. 22-23, 2011.
The Triple Threat team of Cat Osterman, Kelly Kretschman and Caitlin Lowe will
provide a weekend of softball instruction focusing on pitching, offense and
defense.
Pitcher Cat Osterman played at the University of Texas. She was an Olympic Gold
Medalist and Silver Medalist, a two-time World Cup Champion and a two-time Pan
American Gold Medalist. Osterman was a three-time USA Collegiate Player of the
Year and a three-time NFCA First-Team All-American. She was the two-time ESPY
Award winner as the Top Collegiate Female Athlete. Cat is the assistant softball
coach at DePaul University in Chicago, and plays professionally for the Rockford
Thunder.
Kelly Kretschman played outfield and infield at the University of Alabama. She
was an Olympic Gold Medalist and Silver Medalist. She also was a Gold medalist
at the Pan American Games and a member of the World Cup Championship team. The
four-time NFCA All-American lives in Southern California and plays for the USSSA
Pride.
Caitlin Lowe played outfield at the University of Arizona. She was an Olympic
Silver Medalist and a Gold medalist at Pan American Games. A member of the
two-time World Cup Championship team, she also was a four-time NFCA First-Team
All-American. Caitlin now resides in Texas where she gives specialized lessons
in out-fielding and slapping.
Chipola head coach Belinda Hendrix says, “This is a great opportunity for local
players to learn from some of the best softball players in America.”
The two day Chipola camp will include six hours of instruction each day with
lunch included. Registration fee is $200 by Dec. 18 and $250 after Dec. 18.

ORLANDO—Students enrolled in the Chipola’s Mathematics Education degree
program recently attended the Florida Conference for Teachers of Mathematics
(FCTM) conference in Orlando.
Their attendance with professors Dr. Lou Cleveland and Dr. Cherry Ward marks the
fifth year that Chipola has fostered the professional development students
enrolled in its baccalaureate program.
Dr. Lou Cleveland, Director of Teacher Education, said, “Joining other
mathematics educators from Florida and other states, these teacher candidates
attended sessions that focused on teaching strategies that engage and inspire
students. The participating students stated that participation in the
conference increased their repertoire of instructional activities and skills in
teaching the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards.”

CHIPOLA HOLDS DRAWING FOR
SCHOLARSHIP
MARIANNA—Ashton Stevens of Dothan was the grand prize winner of a $500
scholarship to Chipola College in a drawing held recently at the college. The
scholarship may be used for tuition and books.
Winners were drawn from raffle tickets collected at Chipola booths at the
National Peanut Festival, Sunland Fall Festival and the Chipola Regional Career
Fair. College officials plan to hold the drawing as an annual event.
Sarah Garcia, a senior at Cottondale High, was the second prize winner. Traci
Robinson of Dothan, a former Chipola nursing student, won third prize. Those
prizes included Chipola gear and accessories along with Chipola athletic and
Artist Series tickets.
Chipola offers eight bachelor’s degrees, the Associate in Arts degree, various

CHIPOLA WINS ACF BRAIN BOWL
TOURNAMENT
TUSCALOOSA—Chipola College A defeated Georgia Tech 385-175 in the championship
game to claim the title at the ACF Fall Brain Bowl tournament held in Tuscaloosa
at the University of Alabama, Nov. 6.
Chipola A, consisting of Dallin Kelson and Travis Bontrager, went 12-0 in the
tournament and claimed wins over Ole Miss, Western Kentucky, and Tulane. This is
the second year in a row that Chipola has won the ACF Fall in the southeast. The
tournament was also played in other sites across the nation.
Chipola B went 4-7 with wins over Northeast Alabama, Mississippi State, DAR B,
and Auburn Montgomery. Team members for Chipola B are: Brittany Stephens,
Harrison Fuqua, Alton Stone and Zach Gilmore.
Dallin Kelson was the leading individual scorer for the tournament. He answered
159 tossups in 12 rounds and averaged 124.58 points per game. Brittany Stephens
finished eighth in individual scoring. Brittany answered 45 tossups and averaged
40 points per game.

BUSINESS MAG INVITES STUDENTS TO ENTER BUSINESS CONTEST
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Business Department invites students to enter 850
Business Magazine's Collegiate Entrepreneur Invitational.
Students are invited to create a business plan to submit to the
contest. Students may enter as individuals or as a team. A team may not consist
of more than four students. All proposals must be original work.
Entries must be postmarked no later than Nov. 29, 2010. Contest details are

Cash awards
will be provided to the top three contenders, to use for education or as seed
money to start their business. First place receives $5,000, with second place
earning $2,000, and third place picking up $1,000.
The first place winner be given the opportunity to pitch their business plan to
a group of local venture capitalists, although there will be no guarantee of
funding. The winner will be featured on the cover of the April/May 2011 issue of
850 – the Business Magazine of Northwest Florida. Top finalists will be
included in the cover story, along with feedback comments from the expert panel.

MASTER WOODWORKER TO SPEAK AT CRAA
MARIANNA—Claude Reese, master woodworking craftsman, will be the featured
speaker at the monthly meeting of the Chipola Regional Arts Association (CRAA)
on Tuesday, Nov. 16.
In addition to woodworking, Reese also is a photographer, local history buff,
retired flight instructor and retired businessman. Reese will be speaking on the
art of woodworking and will be showing some of his work as well as explaining
the creative process. The meeting is open to the public.
The program will be held at Jim’s Buffet & Grill, Hwy. 90, Marianna, with a
Dutch-treat buffet lunch at 11:30 followed by the program at noon.

CHIPOLA HOOPS TEAMS OFF TO GOOD
START
MARIANNA—The Lady Indians opened the season with a pair of wins in the Milton H.
Johnson Classic.
Chipola scored a 68-49 win over The Rock School on Nov. 5. The Lady Indians were
led in scoring by Jasmine Shaw with 14 points and 3 rebounds. Carleeda Green
scored 13. Ty O’Neil had 12 points and 6 rebounds. Ance Celmina scored 11 points
and pulled in 4 rebounds.
Chipola beat Miami Dade, 88-70, on Nov. 6. O’Neil led with 27 points and 8
rebounds. Jasmine Shaw scored 15 points with 3 rebounds. Green had 13 points and
5 rebounds. Brieona Warner scored 12, with 5 rebounds. Jeniece Johnson had 10
points and 8 rebounds.
The Chipola Lady Indians host the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report Classic,
Nov. 12-14, in the Milton H. Johnson Health Center. Chipola plays South Georgia
Tech, Friday at 8 p.m. The Lady Indians face State Fair College, Saturday at 8
p.m. and Monroe, Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Lady Indians are ranked second in the FCCAA State Women’s Basketball Polls.
The Nov. 9 poll includes: 1. Gulf Coast (1-0); 2. (tied) Pensacola (3-0); 2
(tied) Chipola (2-0); 4. Tallahassee (1-0); 5. Central Florida (2-0); 6. Indian
River State (2-0); 7. Northwest Florida State (2-0); 8. Santa Fe (2-1); 9.
Daytona State (1-2); and 10. Miami Dade (0-4).
The Lady Indians hit the road until the Conference home opener, Jan. 11, 2011,
when they host Pensacola.
The Chipola men’s team also improved to 2-0 with a pair of wins in the Johnson
Classic. The Indians outlasted Shelton State 52-39 in a defensive struggle
on Nov. 6. Elijah Pittman led the Indians with 15 points. Marcos Knight had 10
points and 10 rebounds. Keith Dewitt pulled in 9 rebounds and scored 5
points.
The Indians trounced Enterprise State, 105-60, on Nov. 5. Pittman led Chipola
with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Knight had 19 points. Sam Grooms scored 16.

CHIPOLA WINS DELTA BURKE
BRAIN BOWL TOURNEY
ORLANDO—Chipola College Brain Bowl player Dallin Kelson, playing as the Chipola
Blue team, beat Valencia Red 455-125 to win the title in the Delta Burke Brain
Bowl tournament on Nov. 13.
This is the third straight year that a Chipola team has beaten Valencia in the
finals. Chipola’s Kelson finished the tournament with a perfect 13-0 record. He
also broke the individual scoring record at the tournament averaging 153 points
per game and eclipsing the previous record of 103 points. He also achieved a
rare feat by answering all 20 of the 20 questions asked in one round.
Chipola Gold also made the playoffs, losing in the quarterfinals to Seminole CC.
Chipola Gold finished the tournament with a 7-4 record. Gold players are:
Brittany Stephens, Annemarie Nichols, Harrison Fuqua and Ashley Adams.
Kelson finished first in individual scoring, while Brittany Stephens finished in

FIRST GENERATION
SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Foundation is now accepting applications for the
First Generation in College Scholarship for the Spring 2011 semester.
Six partial $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. Applicants must complete a
First Generation in College application and submit with all of the required
items outlined on the application to the Foundation Office by Dec. 1.
Recipients must enroll as undergraduate, degree-seeking students for a minimum
of six hours per term. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements for
demonstrated financial need and must come from a family where neither parent has
completed a bachelor’s degree. If the student regularly resides with only
one parent who provides support, that one parent must not have completed a
bachelor’s degree for the student to be eligible.
Students who are just entering college must have a 2.0 or better GPA at high
school graduation or an earned GED to qualify. Students previously
enrolled in college must have both a cumulative and semester GPA of 2.0 or
better. A copy of the student’s high school transcript must be submitted
if the Fall 2010 semester is the first semester of college enrollment. A college
transcript must be submitted if the applicant has a minimum of 24 college credit
hours earned. If at least 24 hours have not been earned, students must submit
both high school and college transcripts. Unofficial Chipola transcripts are
available online at www.facts.org.
Applicants must have applied for Federal Pell Grant (FAFSA) and have been
determined to be Pell eligible in order to apply for the First Generation
Scholarship. Applicants must have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC)
below 5673 and still have unmet financial need.
Applications are available in the Chipola College Foundation Office. Complete
applications must be received in the Foundation Office by 4 p.m., Dec. 1, not
postmarked by the deadline date.

CHIPOLA HOOPSTERS OFF TO GREAT
START
MARIANNA—The Chipola Lady Indians won two of three games in weekend action to
improve to 4-1 on the year.
Chipola recorded a decisive 65-50 win over Monroe College, Nov. 14. Jasmine Shaw
led Chipola in scoring with 14 points, including four three-pointers. Chinn and
Celmina each scored 11 points. O’Neil added 10.
Lady Indians head coach David Lane, said, “It was a long game and a good finish
to the weekend. We had a pretty balanced effort. We were up 7 at the half,
27-20, and outscored them by 8 in the second half. We knocked down some
free throws and hit some big shots against them, and closed out the game on a
13-2 run.”
Chipola scored an 83-71 win over State Fair College on Nov. 13. Jasmine Shaw led
the Lady Indians with 24 points and 7 rebounds. O’Neil had 23 points and 9
rebounds. Ance Celmina had 10 points and 4 rebounds.
Chipola suffered a hard-fought 59-56 loss to South Georgia Tech, Nov. 12.
Jasmine Shaw and Tykesha O’Neil each scored 12 points for the Lady Indians.
Mikell Chinn had 10 points and 4 rebounds. Carleeda Green had 9 points and 5
rebounds.
The Lady Indians are fourth in the FCCAA State Poll and 23rd in the
NJCAA National Poll. The team hits the road for a series of games over the
next few weeks, returning to the area for games in Panama City, Dec. 17-18.
Chipola’s next home game is Jan. 11, 2011, when they host Pensacola.

The Chipola Indians improved to 4-0 with a pair of wins in Atlanta, Nov. 12-13.
Chipola scored a 70-55 win
over Georgia Perimeter on Nov. 13. Shamarr Bowden was 4 of 8 from the
three-point line with 14 points. Geron Johnson scored 12. Sam Grooms had
11 and Elijah Pittman scored 10. Keith Dewitt had 8 points and 8 rebounds.

MARIANNA—Two members of the Chipola Lady Indians basketball program on Nov. 15
signed letters of intent to play for four-year universities next season.
Ance Celmina from the country of Latvia will play at Southern Mississippi, and
Jasmine Shaw of Cincinnatti, Ohio, will play at Marshall University.
Chipola coach David Lane said, “These are good opportunities for both of these
players. Both of them had difficult choices to make. They came to these
decisions Friday and both played much more relaxed and focused on Saturday.
Celmina averaged nine points and six rebounds per game during Chipola’s weekend
classic. Shaw averaged 16 points per game over the weekend.
The Lady Indians are on the road for the rest of the Fall season. They open the
conference season at Gulf Coast Jan. 8. Chipola’s next home game is Jan. 11 when
they host Pensacola at 5:30 p.m.

CEREMONY SET FOR CHIPOLA SOFTBALL
MARIANNA—Players and coaches from the Chipola College Lady Indians Softball
2009-10 team will be presented State Championship rings at a ceremony during
pre-game of the 8 p.m. game on Saturday, Dec. 4, in the Milton H. Johnson Health
Center.
The Lady Indians captured the FCCAA/NJCAA Region VIII title in May of 2010.

SUNDAY MATINEE ADDED TO
JAZZMATAZZ CHRISTMAS
MARIANNA—Due to the quick selling of tickets for Chipola Show Choir’s, “A
Jazzmatazz Christmas,” the Fine Arts Department has added a Sunday matinee on
Dec. 12, at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $10 each for adults and $5 for children ages 18 and younger.
Tickets may be purchased in the lobby of the Fine Arts Building or from any Show
Choir member. Any remaining tickets will be on sale at the Theater box
office 30 minutes prior to show time.
All those with tickets to any of the Jazzmatazz shows are asked to bring a can
of non-perishable food to the concert for donation to local food banks to share
the holiday spirit.
