NAMED PHI THETA KAPPA HITES SCHOLARS
JACKSON, MS –Chipola College graduates Mary Beth Alderman and Caitlyn
Prichard are among ten community college students from six states named
recipients of the Phi Theta Kappa Hites Transfer Scholarships.
Scholarships of $7,500 each were awarded to Alderman and Prichard, the
only Florida students to receive the scholarships. The awards are intended to
assist community college transfer students in the attainment of baccalaureate
degrees.
Prichard and Alderman were both featured in USA
Today newspaper for their nominations to the 2011 All-USA Community College
Academic Team. Portraits of the students hang on Chipola’s Academic Wall of
Honor.
Alderman was named a Coca-Cola Gold Scholar.
Both students also were named to the All-Florida Academic Team.
Caitlyn Prichard of Chipley is majoring in Food and Resource Economics at
the University of Florida. She plans to attend law school and hopes to become an
effective advocate for the agriculture industry as an agricultural lawyer. The
2009 valedictorian of Chipley High School, Prichard also maintained a perfect
4.0 college GPA at Chipola. She was named First Team All-USA and a
Guistwhite Scholar. She is the daughter of David and Caren Prichard of Chipley.
MaryBeth Alderman also was the 2009 valedictorian of Chipley High. She
was named to the All-Florida Academic team and a national Coca-Cola Gold
Scholar. She is attending the University of Florida where she is a Food Science
and Human Nutrition major. She plans to attend medical school and to specialize
in pediatrics. She is the daughter of Jason and B.J. Alderman of Chipley.
Chipola president Dr. Gene Prough, says, “These two young women continue
to bring positive recognition to Chipola. They come from fine families and I am
very proud that they chose to attend Chipola.”
The Hites scholarship program is made possible by the Hites Community
College Scholarship Foundation and the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation. Robert Hites
was an executive with Ralston-Purina in St. Louis, Missouri. Upon his retirement
he fulfilled a lifelong dream and became an instructor at St. Louis Community
College. Phi Theta Kappa's Executive Director Dr. Rod Risley, says, "The Hites
Scholarships are helping to meet a need that becomes more crucial every day -
helping our students follow through on their commitment to complete by providing
financial assistance to make earning a baccalaureate degree possible. We are
grateful for our partnership, and we congratulate these scholarship winners."
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is
the largest honor society in American higher education with 1,275 chapters on
two-year and community college campuses in all 50 states and around the world.
More than 2.5 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918,
with approximately 125,000 students inducted annually.

Chipola Fall Ensemble Concert is nov. 14
MARIANNA—Chipola College’s music ensembles will present a free concert,
Monday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m., in the Chipola Arts Center. The concert is free and
open to the public.
The Chamber Chorus, under the direction of Leslie Heffner, will perform
chorale classics. Dr. Josh Martin will accompany the choir at the piano.
The guitar studio under the direction of Adam Larison will present a duo
student ensemble. The guitar program has had many successes in recent
years including a featured studio recital and Chipola student, Joseph Covington,
who won the state music symposium competition which included a $2,000
scholarship.
The Rock and Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Randall Haynes,
will have a few new twists this year. Their eclectic selections will have
something for everyone. The group also will be performing at the Pecan
Festival in Malone and around the Chipola district.

Hospital in Boston, will discuss his research during two meetings at
Chipola College on Monday, Nov. 14.
Dr. Mayer will speak to Chipola students, faculty and the community at 11
a.m. in the Chipola Theatre. Pam Rentz and Chipola’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor

Dr. Mayer grew up in Tampa. He received his BA from Yale University and
his MD from Yale University Medical School. He completed post-graduate
training in General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of
Minnesota.
Dr. Mayer served for three years in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps, and
then began his career at Children’s Hospital, Boston and Harvard Medical School.
He has published extensively in the field of pediatric cardiac surgery and
tissue engineering. The tissue engineering research has been carried out
in the Cardiac Surgery Research Laboratory at Children's Hospital, Boston.
His group developed the first tissue-engineered cardiovascular structures
(pulmonary artery patch, single heart valve leaflet, complete trileaflet,
heart-valved conduit) that have been implanted into animals.
Dr. Mayer is author or co-author of more than 300 scientific papers and
30 book chapters. He serves on the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and
is a past President for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Hearts of Promise is sponsoring Dr. Mayer’s visit to Chipola. The
foundation was established in honor of nine year-old Holly Turner by her family
after her second open-heart surgery performed by Dr. Mayer in 2003. Holly’s
aunt, Carol Saunders, is a speech and English professor at Chipola.
Holly’s cousin, Hillary Saunders, is responsible for Dr. Mayer’s visit to
Chipola as part of her Phi Theta Kappa service project. She is also
organizing a walk and pancake breakfast to be held in Chipley on Saturday, Nov.
5. The breakfast is 7-10 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Chipley. The walk will
be held at Shiver’s Park (across from the church) from 8 to 9 a.m.
Hillary has also raised funds through awareness presentations to church
and civic groups, Beanie Baby sales for children having heart surgery at CHB,
and Hearts of Promise cookbook sales. All funds raised will go to research being
conducted by Dr. Mayer at Children’s Hospital Boston. The goal of this
research is to grow valves and arteries from a patient’s own tissue, thus
eliminating the need for multiple open-heart surgeries for thousands of
children. Proceeds from these events will be presented to Dr. Mayer during
his visit to Chipola.

commercial piano solo CD released under the
Eroica Classical Recordings label. She
will share with sample musical selections and talk about the recording process.
The CD will
feature composers from old time favorites Rachmaninoff and Scriabin to
contemporary living composers Ned Rorem, Stephen Chatman and Philip Neil Martin.
Conversational topics for this program will span from art work design, the
studio recording process, and working with an audio engineer. As the
primary editor and producer of the project, Dr. Yoshikawa has gained a wealth of
knowledge. This is a great opportunity to pick the brain of a renowned artist
who lives right here in Marianna.

ENGINEERING PROF TO DISCUSS ROBOTS AND ROCKETS AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Dr. Geoffrey Brooks, professor of Engineering at the Florida
State University/Panama City will speak at Chipola College, Wednesday, Nov. 16,
at 10 a.m., in Jackson Lecture Hall.
The Chipola Science Club is hosting the seminar. Dr. Brooks will discuss
his students’ robotics projects and upcoming rocket competition.

JAZZMATAZZ Show Choir Concert moved to january
MARIANNA—The popular Chipola College Show Choir series, Jazzmatazz, has
an interesting twist this year. It is called “Stadsmatazz” to honor Joan
Stadsklev, retiring Associate Dean of Chipola’s
Fine and Performing Arts Department.
The song and dance performances under the direction of Angie White and
Dr. Josh Martin are scheduled for Jan. 5, 6 and 7 at 7 p.m. in the Chipola
Theatre.
Originally slated for December, Jazzmatazz has been rescheduled in part
to allow more alumni to come back to campus to be a part of this historic event.
Signature songs highlighting the history of the group are slated to be
performed.
Dr. Daniel Powell, Associate Dean of Fine and Performing Arts, says,
“Come join this ‘now and then’ experience as the Show Choir electrifies the
stage to honor one of their founding directors: Joan Stadsklev.”
Powell invites everyone to enjoy the high energy group that will feature musical
selections from a wide variety of styles. Show Choir members are selected
through competitive auditions and Powell indicates the talent of this year’s
group is exceptionally strong.

CHIPOLA MATH ED STUDENTS ATTEND FCTM CONFERENCE—Students
in the mathematics education program at Chipola College along with their
instructors recently attended the Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics
Conference in Jacksonville. The FCTM conference provides mathematics teachers
from throughout the state the opportunity to share teaching strategies for
grades K–12. Participants also attended sessions to review new teaching
materials and to learn about the new Florida mathematics requirements. The

Internet Marketing SEMINAR SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer Part 2 of a small business seminar on
marketing, entitled, “Marketing on the Internet and Using Social Media,” Friday,
Dec. 2.

implement new marketing techniques, unlock the secrets of the top social media
sites and establish online brand presence. Other topics include: focusing
marketing efforts with search engine optimization, monitoring web site

HOSTS MEDIA PREVIEW OF CENTER FOR THE ARTS
MARIANNA—Local reporters got a behind-the-scenes look at the Chipola
College Center for the Arts during a Media Hard Hat Tour on Wednesday, Nov. 16.
The college enlisted the services of Theatre Consultant Robert Lorelli of
New York, who has worked on a number of major theatre design plans. Lorelli led
the media tour to point out the main features of the center.
College officials broke ground to begin construction of the $16 million
project in July of 2010. The center is being constructed on the north end
of campus on new four-lane entrance off River Forest Road.
Chipola Capital Projects and Contracts Administrator Louy Harris reported
that the 56,000 square foot center is expected to be completed this summer. The
Center will open in September 2012 with a one-night opening gala benefit
performance featuring nationally-recognized artists and a cavalcade of local
music, dance and theatrical performances. A special inaugural exhibition also
will be presented in the Center's visual art gallery.
The main theatre within the center will seat 655 patrons with a balcony,
and will include new dressing rooms, a scene shop and costume shop. An art
gallery and reception area is planned, along with a concession area. The most
intriguing feature of the new complex is a “black box” experimental theater
especially for theater audiences of 100.
Chipola president Dr. Gene Prough, said, “The new Center for the Arts is
the largest building project in the history of the college. This will be a
showplace for the performing arts for our students and the community.”
Dr. Daniel Powell, Associate Dean of Fine and Performing Arts, says, “The
public will enjoy the fine and performing artistic work of our students in
theatre, music, and art. The space also will provide a strong artistic venue for
the Chipola Artist Series and visiting art exhibits. Visitors will enjoy an
aesthetically-pleasing and artistic experience from the moment they enter the
center grounds through the final curtain.”
Chipola Theater Director Charles Sirmon says, “This is the culmination of
years of planning and dreaming. The larger theater will enable us to stage big
musicals and accommodate large crowds. The size of the theater will also enhance
our educational theater outreach program so that more students will be able to
enjoy theater. I’m very excited about the black box theater which will give
students the opportunity to work on a smaller stage and produce their own work.”
Sirmon says the technical side of theater also will be greatly enhanced with
state-of-the-art systems for rigging, hanging, lighting and set construction
facilities.
The center is a design-build project which brings an architect and
contractor together to complete the project from conception to completion within
the budget. The construction firm of Allstate/Southland Contracting of
Tallahassee was selected as the Design/Build Team to provide design, permitting,
and construction services for the project. Other professional firms contracted
for the Center include: Architect: DAG Architects Inc., Destin; Theatrical
Consultant: Robert Lorelli Associates, Inc., Speonk, New York; Acoustical
Consultant: Siebein Associates, Inc., Gainesville; Electrical Engineer: Humber
Garick Consulting Engineers, Fort Walton Beach; Mechanical Plumbing & Fire
Protection: H2 Engineering, Inc., Tallahassee; Civil Engineer/Landscaping: David
H. Melvin, Inc., Tallahassee; and Structural Engineer: Greenhorne & O'Mara,
Pensacola.
The new Center for the Arts will replace the current 350-seat theater
which was constructed in 1958. The old theater is short on space and even
shorter on restroom facilities. Set construction is now performed outside
weather-permitting. Insufficient dressing room space and the absence of a
costume shop are just some of the challenges in the current theater.
The Chipola Theater is a busy place with an estimated 10,000 visitors per
year. In addition to three annual college theater productions, the theater also
is home to four annual artist series events and other performances for thousands
of area school children.

WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT DELTA BURKE BRAIN BOWL TITLE
ORLANDO—The Chipola College Brain Bowl Blue team outplayed 30 teams to
win the Delta Burke Academic Tournament for the fourth year in a row, defeating
Valencia 505-95 in the championship game. The tournament was held on the
Valencia West campus in Orlando.
The Chipola Blue team of Paul Kelson, Annemarie Nichols and Travis
Bontrager finished the tournament with a 13-0 record, averaging 513.1 points per
game and 23.71 points per bonus, the highest averages in tournament history.
Their average margin of victory was 448.1, also a tournament record.
The Chipola Gold team finished the tournament with a 6-4 record, making
it to the playoffs, before losing in the round of 16 to the University of
Central Florida 225-155. Gold team members are: Caroline Peacock, Adrian Carr,
Nick Ratzlaff and William Singleton.
Chipola Brain Bowl coaches are math professor Stan Young and volunteer
coach Dr. Robert Dunkle.
Chipola points leader Paul Kelson finished as high individual scorer in
the tournament, answering 142 tossups, and averaging 105.77 points per game.
Caroline Peacock was 13th overall in individual scoring.
The Delta Burke is Chipola’s second championship of the Fall season.
Chipola A and B teams finished first and third, respectively, Oct. 22, at the
Florida Gateway Invitational. Chipola finished second, behind the
University of Florida, at the MAGNI Mirror tournament on Oct. 15.
Chipola’s next match is Jan. 20-21 when the team hosts the NAQT Florida
Sectional on the Marianna campus.

3-D COURSE SET FOR JANUARY
MARIANNA—Chipola College is now accepting students for the Simulation
Modeling Technician (3-D) Certificate program which begins in January, 2012.
Application deadline for the program is Dec. 15. Applications must be
submitted to Christen Bennett in A-115.
Students in the program will develop the technical skills necessary to
produce three-dimensional content to be used in business, industry, education,
state and federal government as well as the military.
Matt White, Chipola’s Network Coordinator and Dylan Bass will teach the
course. Software used in the program will include Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, Java
Script, AutoCAD and Unity gaming software. Prospective students must have
proficiency in computer applications in order to successfully complete the
course.
The course begins Jan. 9, 2012 and runs through May 1. Classes are
scheduled for Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5 to 10 p.m.
Cost of the program is $1,500. Due to the length and the nature of the
program, traditional Financial Aid is not available.
The course is limited to the first 12 students.

Spanish Club PlanS Trips
to St. Augustine, Antigua
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Spanish Club is planning a trips to St.
Augustine and Antigua. In November, students will spend two days and nights at
the historic St. George Inn in the heart of the Old Spanish Quarter.
Chipola Spanish Club advisor, Dr. Mark Ebel, has devised a scavenger hunt
for students to follow as a way of discovering St. Augustine's historic and
cultural treasures. Students will obtain information for the scavenger hunt by
riding the town trolley and listening to the interpretive talks by the trolley
guides. Students will move from site to site on foot, collecting information as
they go. An evening meal is planned at a restaurant which serves authentic
Spanish and Latin American cuisines.
Dr. Ebel noted that while most of his students know a little about
American history, the part of that history that predates the Pilgrims, the early
Spanish period, is often neglected. He said the purpose of this trip is to
rediscover that history, while engaging in informal learning experiences that
are fun.
Chipola will offer a travel and study program in Antigua, Guatemala over
Spring Break, March 25-April 1, 2012. The program will feature 30 hours of
private instruction from native speaking Spanish instructors. The program
fee of $2,160 is all-inclusive covering transportation, meals, lodging and
excursions. The study program provides three hours of credit in Latin
America Travel Study (LAS 1950).

PlanS Trips to St. Augustine, Antigua—The Chipola

November, students will spend two days at the historic St. George Inn in the
heart of the Old Spanish Quarter.

SEMINAR SET AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—Chipola College will offer Part 2 of a small business seminar
on marketing, entitled, “Marketing on the Internet and Using Social Media,”
Friday, Dec. 2.
The workshop will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., in Room M-108 of the
Chipola Business and Technology building. Cost is $30. Pre-registration is
required. The first five students to register will be admitted free.
Participants will discover the power of a social media strategy, learn to
implement new marketing techniques, unlock the secrets of the top social media
sites and establish online brand presence. Other topics include: focusing
marketing efforts with search engine optimization, monitoring web site
effectiveness, making a web site mobile-friendly, connecting with customers and
revitalizing image.

CHIPOLA STUDENT RAISES $20,000 FOR HEART RESEARCH—
Chipola College student Hillary Saunders recently raised $20,000 for the Hearts
of Promise Foundation. Pictured from left, are: Wayne Saunders, Carolyn
Saunders, Hillary Saunders, Dr. John Mayer, Candace Saunders-Turner and Carol
Saunders. The foundation was established in honor of Hillary’s cousin,
nine year-old Holly Turner, who has a congenital heart problem. Hillary
invited heart surgeon Dr. John Mayer to Chipola as part of her Phi Theta Kappa
service project. She also raised funds through a fitness walk, pancake
breakfast, Beanie Baby sales for children having heart surgery, and cookbook
sales. Funds will go to research being conducted by Dr. Mayer at Children’s
Hospital Boston.

AND TDC TO HOST PANHANDLE BASKETBALL CLASSIC
MARIANNA—Chipola College and the Jackson County Tourist Development
Council will host the Panhandle Classic Dec. 1-3 in the Milton H. Johnson Health
Center.
Six teams from the FCSAA Top 10 will be in action. Palm Beach (5-0) is
the top-ranked team in the state poll. Northwest Florida State (5-0) is second.
Chipola (4-0) is ranked third. Santa Fe (3-0) is fourth. Tallahassee (2-1)
is fifth. St. Petersburg (5-1) is sixth. Pensacola (5-0) is seventh and Brevard
(4-1) is eighth.
Action begins Thursday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m., with third-ranked Chipola
taking on number eight Brevard.
All five Panhandle Conference teams will be in action Friday, Dec. 2,
with number seven Pensacola taking on top-ranked Palm Beach at noon.
Number five Tallahassee meets fourth-ranked Sante Fe at 2 p.m. Gulf Coast plays
Central Florida at 4 p.m. Number two Northwest Florida takes on number eight
Brevard at 6 p.m. Chipola faces Miami Dade in the 8 p.m. nightcap.
Saturday, Dec. 3 games begin at noon with Gulf Coast and Santa Fe.
Pensacola meets Brevard at 2 p.m. Tallahassee and Miami Dade face off at 4 p.m.
Second-ranked Northwest Florida takes on top-ranked Palm Beach at 6 p.m. Chipola
plays Central Florida in the 8 p.m. game. During pre-game of the Chipola men’s
game, members of the Chipola Baseball team will be presented their 2011 State
Championship rings.

COLES SIGNS WITH FSU
MARIANNA—Chipola College pitcher Robby Coles of Crawfordville, Florida,
will be a Seminole next year.
The right-hander signed a scholarship with Florida State at a press
conference at Chipola on Nov. 9. “It’s a dream come true for me to play at
Florida State,” Coles said. “Coach Martin and the Seminoles have a great
tradition and I look forward to becoming a part of the program.”
Of his time at Chipola, Coles said, “I love playing for coach (Jeff)
Johnson. He has helped me improve a lot.”
Chipola Coach Jeff Johnson said, “Robby is a great kid who has worked
hard for us. We’re looking for more good things from him this season.”
At 6 feet tall and 170 pounds, Coles amassed a 9-3 record at Chipola last
season and helped lead the team to a state title.
After sharing the Panhandle Conference title with Northwest Florida
State, Coles pitched a gem to give the Indians a 6-5 win over the Raiders in the
championship game of the FSCAA State Tournament. Coles pitched 7 innings,
giving up only one run with four strikeouts. It was his second win in the
tournament. For his work, Coles won the Robert Purkey, Jr., Memorial Award as
the Outstanding Pitcher in the state tournament. Coles also was named to the
Panhandle All Conference Second Team.
Coles helped lead the Indians to a
fifth place finish in the NJCAA National Baseball Tournament. Chipola finished
the 2011 season with a record of 40-22.
Coles played his high school ball at Wakulla High where he led the 2010
War Eagles to the Elite 8 of the Regionals for the first time in 42 years.

STATE ATTORNEY OFFERS SPECIAL CRIMES CLASS AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Center for Criminal Justice Training
recently provided an Advanced Training Course entitled, “Sex Crimes
Investigations,” in conjunction with The Office of The State Attorney, 14th
Judicial Circuit Glenn Hess.
A team of experienced professionals and practitioners encompassing the
entire scope of the Judicial System were assembled to present the subject matter
in both an interesting and informative format at the College Public Service
Training Facility.
The two-week class was offered to both Correctional and Law Enforcement
Certified officers as a career development opportunity which could additionally
satisfy mandatory training for each discipline. During the two week
presentation, a team of 12 separate professionals provided both lecture and
hands on instruction into the proper and legally acceptable practices of
investigating sex crimes involving both children and adults.
The Children’s Advocacy Center, Sexual Assault Response Team (S.A.R.T.),
Medical Staff, as well as numerous Professional Staff from the 14th
Circuit State Attorney’s Office presented lectures, examples, methods,
techniques and expertise in the proper handling and reporting of these sensitive
Investigations.
The class was well attended by approximately twenty five Certified
Officers from throughout the Region. Steve Anderson, Chipola College Assessment
Center Manager, said, “Comments from the attendees reflected favorably on the
dynamic break down of the different topics presented, the instructors, as well
as the new awareness of all of the available resources for these type
investigations.”
State Attorney Glen Hess summarized the Advanced Class as, “A team
approach to criminal justice with Chipola College through cooperation of both
the Law Enforcement and Corrections communities.”
