ENROLLMENT UP AT CHIPOLA THIS FALL
MARIANNA—Chipola College officials are
celebrating a five percent enrollment increase this Fall.
While the numbers are still being collected from on-campus programs and high
school dual enrollment classes, college officials estimate that more than 2,000
students are enrolled this Fall.
“We are pleased with the continued growth, which
points to the ongoing demand for higher education opportunities in our area,”
said Dr. Jayne Roberts, Chipola’s Dean of Enrollment Services. “It’s clear that
the current economic climate is driving more students to campuses across the
nation, and Chipola is no exception.”
Roberts also points to growth in Chipola’s Bachelor degree programs as an
important factor in the overall increase. Enrollment in B.S. programs is
up 85% over this time last year with 158 students compared to 85
last Fall.
Roberts says, “The Bachelor’s degree programs have drawn great interest and
enrollment demands at the associate’s level as well as the bachelor’s level.”
Chipola offers eight bachelor’s degree programs including math or science
education for middle and high school, elementary education, exceptional student
education, business and nursing.
College president Dr. Gene Prough said, “We are glad that so many students are
taking advantage of the opportunities available at Chipola. Our goal is to
provide access to higher education to all the citizens of our district.”
Students may still enroll in classes this Fall thanks to the new, shortened C
term. Classes run Oct. 16 through Dec 16, with registration on Oct. 15.
Financial aid application deadline for Term C is Oct. 1.
The majority of Chipola students are enrolled in the Associate in Arts (AA)
Degree program designed for students who plan to complete their first two years
of college work at Chipola and then transfer to a four year program at Chipola
or another college.
Chipola offers more than a dozen Associate in Science (AS) degrees which provide

CHIPOLA NURSING
STUDENTS LEARN WITH HUMAN SIMULATORS
MARIANNA—The Chipola College nursing department has added another member to
their growing family of human patient simulators.
The birthing simulator named Noelle can breathe, bleed and talk just like a real
mother. The high tech device is designed to help students learn about the
challenges associated with delivering babies by making quick decisions in a
stressful environment.
Noelle is Chipola’s fourth human simulator in the family which includes a child,
and male and female adults.
All simulators can be adjusted to suit the education point of the student.
Medical issues and training can be progressively increased in difficulty as
students move through the program.
Amy Samson, a Jackson Hospital nurse and Chipola adjunct instructor, is
responsible for the patient simulator project. Samson can control the
patients’ vital signs and speech from a remote location which is equipped with
cameras for observing the students.
Funds for the latest simulator came from the Chipola Regional Workforce
Development Board.

Chipola
hosts MEETING ON Electric Line Technician training
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Division of Workforce Development recently hosted a
meeting to explore regional training needs of electric power line distribution
technician training.
The meeting was attended by regional electric cooperatives and companies
representing Gulf Coast Electric Cooperative, Florida Public Utilities, West
Florida Electric Cooperative and Gulf Power Company.
Bud Riviere, Dean Workforce Development at Chipola, facilitated the meeting
which focused on the college’s plans to implement a new Electric Line Technician
Training and Certification program in the near future. Riviere said, “The
meeting was very productive in that everyone attending pledged to support the
instructional program and collaborate in terms of sharing resources in order to
provide required training for Line Techs and related occupations. Chipola
College is delighted to lead in training for this exciting career opportunity.”
The next step in the process is to review existing curriculum frameworks and
customize training to local needs. In the process, regional facilities
will be visited in order to plan the construction of a laboratory site for
hands-on training. Riviere indicates that land for the program has been
procured at the college’s Reddoch Annex site. Some classroom instruction
will begin immediately for incumbent workers. Program completion is
planned for the fall of 2010.

CHIPOLA ANNOUNCES CAST
FOR “MURDERS OF 1940”
MARIANNA—Chipola College Theater Director recently announced the cast for the
upcoming, “Musical Comedy Murders of 1940.” Performances of the show are set for
Nov. 5-9.
Several local actors were cast in the following roles: Sarah Lovins as Helsa
Wenzel, Piper Williams as Elsa Von Grossenkruelen, Austin Pettis as Michael
Kelly, Ben Grande as Patrick O’Reilly, Mark Lent as Ken De La Maize, Breanna
Kneiss as Nikki Crandall, Aven Pitts as Eddie McCuen, Kristina Lopez as Majorie
Baverstock, Matthew Van Buren as Roger Hopewell, Kayla Todd as Bernice Roth and
Joe Evans as the radio voice.
This ingenious and wildly comic romp pokes fun at the more ridiculous aspects of
"show biz" and the corny thrillers of Hollywood's heyday. The play is a nonstop
barrage of laughter as those assembled (or at least those who aren't killed off)
untangle the mystery of the "Stage Door Slasher."
As the actors and director prepare their performance, a blizzard cuts off any
possible retreat, bodies start to drop in plain sight, knives spring out of
nowhere, masked figures drag their victims behind swiveling bookcases, and
accusing fingers point in all directions. The bumbling police inspector
snowshoes in to investigate and the mystery is solved in the nick of time. The “Slasher”
is unmasked, but not before the audience has been treated to a sidesplitting
good time and a generous serving of the author’s biting, satiric and
refreshingly irreverent wit.
