The
Tallahassee Ballet to open Chipola Artist Series, Sept. 19
MARIANNA—The Tallahassee Ballet (TTB) brings its
highly celebrated Afternoon of Music and Dance to Chipola College on
Sunday, Sept. 19, at 2:30 p.m., in the first event of the 2010-11 Chipola Artist
Series.
The concert will feature both classical and contemporary works from Bach to
Broadway with live music under the artistic direction of Rick McCullough and the
music direction of Deloise Lima. Four acclaimed choreographers will
present works to music by Bach, Chopin, Glass, Keating Adler, Schwartz and
Orbison.
Rick McCullough, TTB's Artistic Director, brings a wealth of choreographic
talent to TTB's repertory. His choreographic awards include five fellowships
from the National Endowment for the Arts, second prize at the Tokyo
International Choreography Competition and a gold medal at the Boston
International Choreography Competition.
Choreographer Gerri Houlihan, from the Florida State University, began her
professional career at the Juilliard School where she studied with Antony Tudor.
She is choreographing a piece entitled Mercy!. "Mercy!, featuring
popular songs by singer/songwriter Roy Orbison.
Choreographer Ken Alan appeared in the Broadway productions of A Chorus Line
(Bobby), Fosse, the first national tours of Chicago, Fosse, and
Grease!. Included in the TTB's performance are two Broadway gems, "Who's Got
the Pain" from Damn Yankees, and the "Manson Trio" from Pippin, choreographed
by the late Bob Fosse. A third piece, "Big Noise," features Alan's choreography
set in the Fosse style. Alan will join the company on stage for the performance
in addition to staging.
Lauren Slone, an FSU MFA student is choreographing a contemporary duet entitled
It's That Simple. Sloan describes her piece, "Rather than re-visit
passion in the traditional pas de deux format, I attempted to explore the
playful/competitive aspects of a relationship. An essence of 'coyness'
underscores the piece, as the dancers beautifully execute demanding movement
vocabulary."
Katy Cashin returns to TTB as a choreographer. She grew up with The
Tallahassee Ballet and performed many soloist roles. A recent graduate from SMU,
four of her original works were produced while earning her degrees. She
performed in master works including Arpino's Birthday Variations
(soloist), Balanchine's Serenade (demi-soloist) and Bejart's Batucuda.
Her piece "Catalyst" "has no story, but she says, “The objective was to focus on
how patterns can be interwoven while simulating the music. It's about the
movement and what initiates it."
The
performance features live music by FSU musicians and costumes designed and
executed by Ann Todd.
Individual tickets go on sale Sept. 7 at the Chipola Business Office located in
the Student Services Building. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for
students under age of 18. Season tickets for all four Artist Series

CHIPOLA ENROLLMENT UP THIS FALL
MARIANNA—Chipola College officials are celebrating a 2.5 percent enrollment
increase this Fall. While the numbers are still being collected from on-campus
programs and high school dual enrollment classes, college officials estimate
that more than 2,000 students are enrolled.
“We are pleased with the continued growth, which points to the ongoing demand
for higher education opportunities in our area,” said Dr. Jayne Roberts, Chipola
Vice President of Student Affairs. “It’s clear that the current economic climate
is driving more students to campuses across the nation, and Chipola is no
exception,” said Roberts.
Roberts also points to growth in the college’s Bachelor’s degree programs as an
important factor in the overall increase. Enrollment in B.S. programs grew over
85% last year and is up six percent this year with 169 students enrolled in
four-year programs.
Roberts says, “The Bachelor’s degree programs have drawn great interest and
enrollment demands at the associate’s level as well as the bachelor’s level.”

CHIPOLA
SEEKING DONORS FOR FIRST GENERATION SCHOLARSHIP
MARIANNA—The Chipola College Foundation is seeking donations for the First
Generation in College Scholarship for the 2010 Spring Semester.
The Florida Legislature created the scholarship program and appropriated funds
for each community college to match dollar for dollar with private
