MARIANNA—U.S. Congressman Allen Boyd on Tuesday announced the award of a $927,000 grant to help Chipola Junior College recruit and train students in health-related occupations.
The funds will help Chipola identify, support and train area citizens in the health field. The grant is intended to help dislocated, incumbent and adult learners, as well as provide instructional guidance and administrative assistance. Additionally, the grant will provide equipment and supplies in the Health Sciences department over the next two to three years.
Dr. Gene Prough, CJC executive vice president, says, "Chipola is proud to receive this rare allocation from the Department of Labor/Employment & Training Administration, to serve as a demonstration project. This project will show that a small, rural, community college can implement excellent training in health sciences. The grant will provide much-needed resources to fund existing programs while freeing up instructional resources to develop new curriculums for future health science programs."
Chipola currently offers four programs in health sciences: Associate Degree Nursing (which prepares students to become Registered Nurses); Practical Nursing (which prepares students to become Licensed Practical Nurses); Emergency Medical Technician; and Patient Care Assistant.

cjc forms partnership with national computer training companY
MARIANNA--Chipola Junior College officials today announced a new partnership with I/Tech Services, Inc., to bring professional Information Technology certification programs to the college.
An information session is set for Thursday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Continuing Education Conference Center on the Chipola campus.
The Chipola–I/Tech partnership includes: Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) Windows 2000 certification program, A+ Certified Computer Technician Program and Network+.
Microsoft (MCSE) certification is a professional credential for aspiring IT professionals who are qualified to analyze the business requirements for system architecture, deploy, install, and configure infrastructure components, and troubleshoot system problems.
The A+ Certified Computer Technician Program, sponsored by the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), certifies the competency of service technicians in the computer industry. Students learn to upgrade, repair and troubleshoot PCs and much more.
Network+ is a vendor neutral certification that measures the technical knowledge of networking professionals with 18-24 months experience. The certification means that an individual possesses the knowledge needed to configure and install the TCP/IP client. The exam covers a wide range of vendor and product neutral networking technologies that can also serve as a prerequisite for vendor-specific IT certifications. This course offers the basics of networking and helps to prepare students for CompTIA’s Network+ examination.
The Chipola/I-Tech program offers conveniently scheduled evening classes to accommodate training for career changers and current IT professionals. Financial Aid is available through the SLM Financial Career Training Loan program for those who qualify.

MOSQUITO-BORNE ENCEPHALITIS EXPERT TO SPEAK AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA--Dr. William Jeter will present two seminars at Chipola Junior College on Eastern Equine Encephalitis and the West Nile Virus, Sept. 11 and 12.
The Tuesday, Sept. 11, seminar is set for at 7 p.m., in Jackson Hall of the Literature/Language Building. The same seminar will be offered on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m., in Room 300 of the CJC Fink Natural Science Building.
Dr. Jeter is the Diagnostic Veterinary Manager of Equine Programs in the Division of Animal Industry of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. He has been actively involved with several livestock disease control and eradication programs, enforcement of interstate regulations for movement of livestock and supervision of field program activities.
Dr. Jeter is a member of Florida' Surveillance and Response Team that monitors Encephalitis outbreaks in Florida. His presentation "Mosquito-Borne Encephalitis in Humans and Horses" will include: the basic morphology and life cycle of these viruses; clinical diagnosis and symptoms; types of various mosquitoes; reservoir hosts and final hosts; vaccinations; prevention and control; geographic distribution and incidence; and mortality.
Dr. Jeter earned a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University. He served two years in the U.S. Air Force, Veterinary Corps at the Military Working Dog Training Center at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During this time, Dr. Jeter and four other veterinarians were responsible for the recruitment, purchasing, training and daily medical care of 300-500 military working dogs.
Dr. Jeter operated a mixed animal practice in his hometown of Dade City, FL, from 1971 to 1985. He joined the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Animal Industry in 1985 as a regulatory veterinarian.
The public is encouraged to attend either meeting. Dr. Jeter also will meet with CJC Honors Program students following his seminar on Wednesday.

SUCCESS CENTER AT CJC OFFERS HELP
MARIANNA—The Chipola Junior College Success Center has openings for students who need help with testing skills, GED Prep, academic confidence or a refresher in Reading, Language, Math and Pre-algebra in order to continue their education in academic or Workforce Development Programs.
The Success Center offers the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). A new GED test becomes effective Jan. 1, 2002. On that date, all previously passed sections of the GED will be lost, if the complete battery is not passed. Students with partial passes are encouraged to complete the GED by December.

MARIANNA--The Chipola Junior College District Board of Trustees approved
a two- percent raise and a non-recurring $500 lump sum payment for college
faculty during the board's meeting on Sept. 18.
The raise is retroactive to July 1, 2001.
The faculty is represented by the Chipola Faculty Association, a
collective bargaining unit. The college's career and administrative employees
received the same increase in July.
All
CJC employees received a four percent raise and a $400 lump sum payment last
year.
In
other business the board approved a contract with Peter Brown Construction of
Tallahassee to build a new 28,000 square foot Health Sciences Building. The
two-story building will house the college's health-related programs, and will
feature laboratories, conference facilities, lecture hall and classrooms.
The
construction management contract includes a guaranteed maximum price of
$2,875,000. Under the construction management process, substantial completion
date of the project is August of 2002. This is the first time that Chipola has
utilized the construction management process.
A
ground-breaking ceremony for the new Health Sciences Building is scheduled for
Noon on Tuesday, Oct. 2.

Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder; Dr. Gemma Beckley,

ground for a new Health Sciences Building.
The
Chipola District Board of Trustees recently approved a contract with Peter Brown
Construction of Tallahassee to build the 28,000 square foot building. The
two-story structure will house the college's health-related programs, and will
feature laboratories, conference facilities, lecture hall and classrooms.
The
construction management contract includes a guaranteed maximum price of
$2,875,000. The building is expected to be ready for classes in Fall of 2002.
The
ceremony will be held on Longhouse Court, near the college Child Care Center.
MARIANNA--Bud
Riviere, Dean of Workforce Development at Chipola Junior College, is pleased to
announce that Chipola’s Automotive Technology program recently received
certification by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF)
and the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
“During
the past several months we have worked closely with NATEF to make certain that
our program would meet strict industry standards,” says Riviere.
“Now we are delighted to join the ranks of ASE certified technician
training programs. Students will be
assured of a quality education, and shop owners will be assured of getting
quality job applicants.”
In
order to achieve this coveted recognition, the training program underwent
rigorous evaluation by NATEF. Nationally
accepted standards of excellence in areas such as instruction, facilities, and
equipment were used. Upon completion of the evaluation, NATEF recommended that
Chipola Junior College be certified by ASE, a national, non-profit organization
which test and certifies repair technicians in addition to certifying technician
training programs.

Certification of automotive training programs increases cooperation
between local education and industry leaders.
It also gives added assurance that Chipola graduates will be employable
entry-level technicians. As a result, the motoring public will benefit since more
qualified repair technicians will join the work force.”
John
Gardner, CJC Auto Tech instructor says, "We need to especially thank a few
of our local automotive experts who gave two days of their time with no

The
Chipola program is approved to offer NATEF Certification in 8 areas: brakes,
engine performance, electrical/electronics, manual drive trains, automatic drive
trains, heating/air conditioning, engine repair and suspension/steering.
The
CJC program is now certified for a period of five years, after which it will be
reviewed to ensure that is continues to meet industry standards and to adjust to
the latest technological advances in the rapidly changing automotive world.

RUMORS IN CJC THEATER
MARIANNA—Tickets
for the Chipola Junior College production of “Rumors,” go on sale
Oct. 4.
Evening
performances for this hilarious Neil Simon comedy are Oct. 18, 19 and 20, with
an Oct. 21 matinee. Tickets--$7 adults and $5 students--will be available in the CJC Business
Office.
The
comedy is set at the townhouse of a deputy New York City mayor and his wife who
have gathered with four couples to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary.
The party never begins because the host has shot himself in the head (it's only
a flesh wound) and his wife is missing. His
lawyer's cover-up gets progressively more difficult to sustain as the other
guests arrive and nobody can remember who has been told what about whom. Doors slam and hilarity abounds as the couples get more and
more crazed.
The
cast includes: Sharon Floyd of Dothan as Chris Gorman, Chris Manasco of Dothan
as Ken Gorman, Casi Parmer of Sneads as Claire Ganz, Christopher Bishop of
Cottondale as Lenny Ganz, Arthur Obar of Graceville as Ernie Cusack, Tiffany
Nichols of Marianna as Cookie Cusack, Ben Ayres of Wurzburg, Germany as Glenn
Cooper, Erin Davis of Old Orchard Beach, Maine as Cassie Cooper, Trey McGowan as
Officer Welch and Amber Williams of Graceville as Officer Pudney.
Charles
Sirmon, CJC Theatre Coordinator, will direct the show.

CHIPOLA'S CHRISTMAS DINNERS PLANNED
MARIANNA--Tickets go on sale Nov. 1 for the Chipola Junior College
Department of Fine and Performing Arts Christmas dinners.
The opera "Amahl and the Night Visitors," will be presented in
a holiday dinner theatre setting on Dec. 6 and 7.
"Amahl" is a one-act opera originally written for presentation
on NBC television Christmas Eve of 1951 by Gian Carlo Menotti.
The story is of a crippled shepherd boy (Amahl) who lives in utter
poverty with his widowed mother. They
are visited by three kings who are following an amazing star.
Reserved tickets--$25 for adults, $20 for children 12 and under--will be
available in the CJC Fine Arts Office. Tables
of 8 may be reserved. Groups wishing to sit together must purchase tickets at
the same time. Sorry, no phone or
credit card reservations. An early sell-out is expected.

courses during the month of October.
The following computer courses
will be offered: Excel I, Oct. 1 and 2, Excel II,
Oct. 8 and 9, Access I, Oct. 15 and
16, Access II,
Oct. 22 and 23, Powerpoint I, Oct. 29 and 30. Computer courses meet from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Cost of each course is $45.
A CPR course will meet
Oct. 9 and 11 from 5 to 9 p.m. Cost
is $34.
Cake Decorating II will
meet Thursdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Oct. 16 through Nov. 6 Cost is $28.
A Workzone Traffic Control Intermediate Training course will be offered Oct. 12 and 13 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Cost is $200. Workzone Traffic Control Advanced Training will be offered Oct. 26 and 27.
Cost is $450.
A 10-Hour Childcare Training class
will meet Oct. 13 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost
is $31.
The first course of the WEBMaster Certification Program: Mastering
the Internet will be offered Oct. 13 and 14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Creating a Home Page
will meet Oct. 27 and 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost of each is $250.
Sign Language I will be
offered each Monday Oct. 15 through Nov. 26 from 5 to 8 p.m.
Cost is $33.
Two Life Insurance courses will be offered Oct. 18.
Wills and Trusts will meet
from 8 a.m. to Noon. Rules and Tools of
Qualified Planning will meet
from 1 to 4 p.m. The courses
designated by the Florida Department of Insurance as INTERMEDIATE level courses,
are intended for the student who has a basic knowledge or limited experience
with the subject matter.
A Fiber Optics course will
be offered Oct. 29 through Nov. 1 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The registration fee of $1,100 includes books and materials.

MARIANNA—Application
deadline for Chipola Junior College's next day course in Basic
Corrections is Oct. 11. The class
will begin Oct. 15.
The
course will meet weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Applicants must be at least 19 years of
age, be of good moral character, possess a valid driver’s license, earn a
passing score on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) and meet FDLE
requirements. Students are encouraged to apply early due the extensive
application process.

MARIANNA--The
Chipola Junior College Cheerleaders will sponsor a Cheerleading Extravaganza
Dec. 15 at the Milton H. Johnson Health Center.
Deadline for entries is Oct. 29.
Squads will compete at the middle school, junior varsity, and varsity levels.
Several all-star squads will also perform. Application forms may be downloaded

The
cheerleaders will make their season debut at Chipola's Senior Day Oct. 17.

articulation agreement with Florida's public universities, Chipola graduates who
earn the Associate in Arts Degree are guaranteed acceptance to the junior year
at Florida's 11 public universities.
