MARIANNA—"Not only side-splitting, but front
and back-splitting" is how theater director Charles Sirmon describes
"Rumors," the Neil Simon comedy that opens Oct. 18 in the CJC Theater.
"I think folks are really going to love this one. It's just
hilarious," said Sirmon.
Evening performances for the CJC production comedy
are Oct. 18, 19 and 20, with an Oct. 21 matinee. Tickets--$7
adults and $5 students--are available in the CJC Business Office.
The comedy is set at the townhouse of a
deputy New York City mayor and his wife who have gathered with four couples to
celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary. The party never begins because the
host has shot himself in the head (it's only a flesh wound) and his wife is
missing. His lawyer's cover-up gets
progressively more difficult to sustain as the other guests arrive and nobody
can remember who has been told what about whom. Doors slam and hilarity abounds as the couples get more and
more crazed.
The cast includes: Sharon Floyd of Dothan as Chris
Gorman, Chris Manasco of Dothan as Ken Gorman, Casi Parmer of Sneads as Claire
Ganz, Christopher Bishop of Cottondale as Lenny Ganz, Arthur Obar of Graceville

MARIANNA—Students interested in the field of computer
networking should contact Chipola Junior College immediately. Chipola's newly-revised Networking Services Technology
program is now accepting students for the Spring Semester. This
Associate in Science (AS) degree program
focuses on computer systems and network support. Courses cover a broad set of
skills and knowledge in computer network administration. The program provides
training for recognized industry certifications including A+ and Network+, as
well as the core courses for Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE).
The purpose of the two-year program is to prepare students for employment as information technology specialists, network control operators, data analysts, network technicians, computer security specialists, network specialists, network managers, microcomputer technicians, troubleshooters, WAN/LAN managers, or systems administrators.
Vikki Milton, Chipola's Networking Services Technology advisor, says, "Individuals who can design, manage, and support computer networks are crucial in today's technological environment. Specialists in the IT field are currently demanding high salaries with companies across the country. Similar certification programs can cost thousands of dollars, while our AS degree program offers the same instruction for the standard tuition of $50 per semester hour. Financial aid is available to those who qualify."
Three courses are scheduled for the Spring Semester. Introduction to Microcomputer Maintenance and Repair (CET 1171) will be offered Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 8:50 a.m. Introduction to Networks and Communication (CGS 1263) will be offered Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. Introduction to LAN Management (CGS 1550) will be offered Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 10:50 p.m. Other general education courses required for The Networking Service degree will also be offered during the Spring semester.

MARIANNA--The Chipola Junior College chapter of Phi
Theta Kappa International Honor Society will host a
satellite seminar entitled, "The Isolated Community," Tuesday,
Oct. 9, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the college Conference Center.
The seminar will feature Dr. Donald B.
Kraybill, Dean of scholarship and Professor of Sociology and Anabaptist-Pietist
Studies at Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania. He is a recognized
authority on Anabaptist groups, and his many books include The Upside Down
Kingdom, winner of the National Religious Book Award.

Chipola's own published composer Dr. Allen Molineux, director of the Chipola's

BREAKING GROUND--Chipola
Junior College officials held a ceremony Oct. 2 to break ground for a new Health
Sciences Building. Peter Brown Construction of Tallahassee has begun
construction on the 28,000 square foot, two-story structure that will house the
college's four health-related programs. The $2,875,000 project is set for
completion in August of 2002.
MARIANNA—Some 850 high school seniors are
expected to visit Chipola Junior College for the Annual Senior Day, Wednesday,
Oct. 17.
Chipola's Student Ambassadors have
invited seniors from the 16 high schools in Calhoun, Holmes, Jackson, Liberty,
and Washington counties.
Seniors will arrive on campus beginning at 8:30 a.m. High School
counselors will meet with Chipola counselors at 9 a.m. Performances by the CJC
cheerleaders, and a slam dunk competition featuring the men’s and women’s
basketball teams will begin at 9:15 a.m.
Ambassadors will host seniors on campus tours beginning at 10 a.m. Tours
will include performances by the Show Choir and Theatre Department. The seniors
will enjoy lunch at 12:30 p.m., before departing campus at 1:30 p.m.

with this "farce of ridiculous consequence." The
rib-tickling begins when four couples arrive at an anniversary party for the
Deputy Mayor of New York only to find one half of the honorary couple missing,
and the other half shot in the ear lobe! Discovering uncooked food in the
kitchen, company is left to fend (and cook!) for themselves. The first guest to
arrive, his lawyer, decides on a cover-up, which gets progressively more
difficult to sustain as the other guests arrive and nobody can remember who has
been told what about whom. Faced with explosions, gunshots, and an embarrassing
collision of cover stories, each couple contributes its share of hilarious
hi-jinx to this rousing comedy.

MARIANNA--Carolyn Wilson is the recipient of the October
Faculty/Administrator of the Month Award at Chipola Junior College.
Wilson
has taught music appreciation, music skills, applied piano, class piano courses
at Chipola since 1968.
Joan Stadsklev, CJC director of Fine and Performing Arts, said, "It
is a pleasure to have a person of Carolyn's musical caliber teaching in this
department. She is a joy to work with."
An anonymous colleague who nominated Wilson for the award said, " I
am personally inspired and motivated by her characteristic sweet spirit,
professional attitude, and undying loyalty to Chipola. I am always impressed
with her desire to make sure every student understands the concept she is trying
to communicate."
Wilson serves as the accompanist for the CJC Chamber Chorus. She has
worked with hundreds of elementary school music students and their parents in
the annual "Music through Performance" program which she developed.
She also is the Piano Chairperson for the Florida Community College Activities
Association's annual Winter Music Symposium that includes competitions,
workshops, and masterclasses for piano instructors and students. She also
maintains a private piano studio for students of all ages.
An alumnus of Shorter College, she earned a Master's of Music degree from
Northwestern University. She presently is a doctoral candidate at the University
of South Carolina at Columbia. Her dissertation topic, "Attitudes, Training
and Background Characteristics of Teachers of Older Adults as Beginning
Pianists" combines the research of piano pedagogy with gerontology,
specifically, teaching beginning piano to older adults (60-plus).
Wilson is active in the First Presbyterian Church of Marianna. She enjoys
reading and horseback riding. Her latest project is the restoration of her
father's Laguna Beach home. Wilson has a married daughter Cecily, a Chipola
graduate, who works as a vocational rehabilitation counselor.
The CJC award includes a plaque, reserved parking for a month, a $300
bonus, and a $50 gift certificate from the College Book Store.
Monthly winners are eligible for the annual award.

Allen Molineux will be honored at the Chipola Junior College Fall Festival of
Music Sunday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m., in the Chipola Arts Center.
The free event will feature Chipola's three musical ensembles - Chamber
Choir, Show Choir, and Rock and Jazz Ensemble in concert. The Chamber Choir will
be performing choral literature composed by Molineux, who also directs the
Chipola's Jazz Band. A reception in
honor of Dr. Molineux will follow the afternoon concert.
Molineux joined the Chipola music faculty in 1988, where he teaches
instrumental music and music theory. Since 1971, he has published more than a
dozen original compositions. In addition, he has received numerous commissions
including one from the Florida Music Teachers Association. His
published works range from solos and ensembles for woodwinds, brass and
percussion to choral works.
Molineux's
"Lachrymae for Brass Quintet" was recently selected for performance at
the Society of Composers' Region V Conference at Ball State University in
Muncie, IN, in conjunction with the school's "Festival 31: New Music
2001." The piece was performed by the Da Camera Brass Quintet which is made
up of faculty members at Ball State's School of Music. “Lachrymae,” also was
selected for performance at The Society of Composers National Conference at
Indiana University in 1998.
Molineux's
"Free
Fancy for Solo Flute" was featured on a 1999 Capstone Records CD by
flutist, Grzegorz Olkiewicz. Entitled "Night Thoughts and Fancies,"
includes selections by eight American composers including Molineux.
He earned a Bachelor's Degree from DePauw University, a Master's Degree
from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester and a Doctorate
from Florida State University. He previously taught at Barton College, and has
taught music in public schools in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Molineux also directs the Dothan-based dance band, The Moonlighters. He
lives in Dothan with his wife, Bonnie, and their 10-year old son, Lyle.

MARIANNA—The Chipola Junior College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor
Society will host the satellite seminar,
"An Exploration of Community through the Arts and Humanities,"
Tuesday, Oct. 23, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Continuing Education

Guest speaker Dr. Dan Foran will discuss how community shapes the theme
of major artistic and humanitarian works. He also will discuss the ways in which
writers, composers, and visual artists have used customs, traditions and
celebrations in creating fictional communities, and how imagined communities
have become models for real communities.
Foran is a Professor of American Literature and the Director of the
Writing Center at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He has
served as Scholar for the Washington Commission for the Humanities and was named
the Washington Professor of the Year in 1995 by the Carnegie Foundation.
Dr. Foran published the book Living
with Ambiguity in 1970 and contributed to Justice
and Peace Education: Models for
College and University Faculty. His keynote address "The Pursuit of
Happiness: Conflicting Visions and Values," delivered at the 1998 Phi Theta
Kappa convention, was published in Vital Speeches of the Day. He has also
published a number of essays and poems.
The program is the third in a seminar series, entitled, Customs,
Traditions and Celebrations: The Human Drive

CHRISTMAS DINNER TICKETS ON SALE THURSDAY
MARIANNA--Tickets go on sale Thursday, Nov. 1 for the Chipola Junior
College Christmas dinners.
The CJC Fine and Performing Arts Department will present the opera
"Amahl and the Night Visitors," in a holiday dinner theatre setting on
Dec. 6 and 7.
"Amahl" is a one-act opera originally written for presentation
on NBC television Christmas Eve of 1951 by Gian Carlo Menotti.
The story is of a crippled shepherd boy (Amahl) who lives in utter
poverty with his widowed mother. The
family is visited by three kings following an amazing star.
Reserved tickets--$25 for adults, $20 for children 12 and under--will be
available in the CJC Fine Arts Office. Tables
of eight may be reserved. Groups wishing to sit together must purchase tickets
at the same time. No phone or
credit card reservations are available. An early sell-out is expected.
Tickets will not be available at the door.

ART ON DISPLAY AT CHIPOLA
MARIANNA--A visual art exhibit of Chipola Junior College student work
will be on display, through Nov. 30 in the gallery of the McLendon Fine Arts
Building.
The exhibit is open weekdays, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Monday and
Tuesday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m.
The exhibit features work from Drawing I and II and Two-Dimensional
design classes. Jack-Art-Lanterns from a pumpkin-carving contest set for
Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 1 to 2:50 p.m., also will be on display.
The show is free and open to the public.

MARIANNA—The Chipola Junior College men's and
women's basketball teams open their seasons this week.
The Indians play a pair of games Nov. 2 and 3 at the
Tallahassee Community College Classic. The Lady Indians open at home Nov. 3,
with Santa Fe CC at 4 p.m. The women travel to Wallace Nov. 7.
Both Chipola squads
host a huge weekend of basketball action Nov. 9-10, at the Ramada Limited
Classic. On Friday, Nov. 9, the Lady Indians host St. Pete CC at 3 p.m.
Tallahssee's men play Hiwassee in the 5:30 p.m. game. The Indians meet St.
John's River at 7:30 p.m., Friday.
On Saturday, Nov.
10, the Lady Indians play Daytona Beach CC at 3 p.m. TCC plays St. John's River
at 5:30 p.m. The Indians battle Hiwassee CC (Tennessee) at 7:30 p.m., Saturday.
The
Indians host the gigantic Men's Panhandle Classic, Nov. 16 and 17. The ten-game
event tips off at Noon both days and continues with games at 2, 4, 6 and 8 p.m.
Chipola hosts Harper CC (Illinois) on Nov. 16 at 8 p.m., and Middle Georgia on
Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. Other visiting teams include: Gulf Coast, Tallahassee,
Okaloosa-Walton, Pensacola, South Georgia Tech and Daytona.

MARIANNA--Simon & Son,
America's only father/son piano duo, will play the Chipola Junior College
Theater, Monday, Nov. 5, at 7
p.m., as part of the Chipola Artist Series.
The Simon & Son duo includes the youngest performer ever in Carnegie
Hall. Internationally acclaimed pianist/humorist Peter Simon is joined by fellow
pianist and son, Saling Simon, in a delightful evening of classical and popular
music interspersed with humorous stories and fun for all ages. With a repertoire
ranging from Cole Porter to Wipeout,
Simon and Son shatter classical music's pretensions with a dash of humor spicing
up the Schubert. It’s like
watching a young Victor Borge perform with his son!
Tickets--$12 for adults, $8 for ages 18 and under,
and $4 for CJC students with current ID--are
on sale at the CJC Chipola Business Office. A
limited number of tickets may be available at the door, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Two other offerings are
slated for the Artist Series: Alborada,
Jan. 9, a program of
Andean folk music; and Common
Ground, Feb. 7, a dance program featuring Irish step-dancers,
country cloggers and American tap-dancers.

MARIANNA--The Chipola Junior College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa
International Honor Society will host the final programs in the satellite
seminar series, Customs, Traditions and Celebrations: The Human Drive
for Community, Nov. 6 and Nov. 20, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., in the college
Conference Center.
The Nov. 6 seminar--"The Livable Urban Community" will feature
Dr. John Short, professor of Geography at Syracuse University. He is an
internationally known speaker and author of Alternative
Geographies and Humane Society.
Short has held fellowships at Yale, The Smithsonian and the National Endowment
for the Humanities. His major research areas include urban geography,
environmental issues and political geography.
The Nov. 20 seminar--"The Future of Community"--will be led by
David Zach, a professionally trained futurist, with a master's degree in Studies
of the Future from the University of Houston. Zach has addressed more than 1,000
groups on key trends and current issues in technology, business, education and
society, and has provided research analysis to corporations, colleges and
professional associations. Zach has taught Future Studies at the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

OPEN AUDITIONS FOR FOOTLOOSE
MARIANNA--Charles Sirmon, Chipola Junior College
Theatre Coordinator, announces auditions for the musical Footloose, Nov. 26
and 27 at 6 p.m., in the CJC Theatre.
One of the most explosive movie musicals in recent
memory will burst onto the live stage at CJC in the March 6 through 10, 2002.
Chipola is among the first colleges to produce the
newly-released stage version of the movie.
The story centers on a high school boy, Ren, who
moves with his mother from Chicago to a small farming town. Ren is prepared for
the inevitable adjustment period at his new school, but he isn't prepared for
the rigorous local laws, including a ban on dancing. The ban is the brainchild of a preacher determined to
exercise the control over the town youth that he cannot command in his own home.
When the reverend's rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her
roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals
eager to believe the worst about the new kid.
The Oscar-nominated score includes hits from the
movie sound-track which reached number one and sold over 15 million copies.
Footloose celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with
a warm heart and an open mind.
