The Chipola College Brain Bowl Team finished second in the Community College National Championship held in Minneapolis on February 24-25th.

Chipola entered the championship game with a disadvantage, after losing to longtime rival Valencia in the championship bracket earlier in the day. Chipola would have needed to defeat Valencia twice to claim the title. Chipola led 195-135 late in the first game and had a 10 points lead going into the final question, but Valencia won the last question and took the title 255-235.

In the final standings, Hunter Davis finished 7th overall and Turner McCroan finished 12th in individual scoring. Other members of Chipola A are Katie Everett and Alex Tharp.

Chipola B also had a strong showing, finishing 12th overall in the field. Only Chipola and Valencia qualified two teams for the national tournament. Chipola B team members are:  Donavan Ebersole, Jonce Palmer, Michael Young, and Sierra Ennis.

Chipola will now advance to the International Championship Tournament (ICT) on April 8 in Chicago. The top four community colleges from the CCCT advance to the 4-year college tournament.

The national championship field had 24 teams from across the country. Chipola earned its berth by finishing first in the Florida Sectional held in late January, also receiving the #1 seed in the country. This is the fourth time Chipola has finished as the National Runner-Up, after claiming three consecutive National Championships from 2011-2013. The national championship is played through the National Academic Quiz Tournament (NAQT) system.

Chipola will compete for the FSCAA State Title later this month. Chipola has won the FSCAA State Title a record 7 times.

Chipola A and Chipola B brain bowl teams finished first and second respectively at the North Florida NAQT(National Academic Quiz Tournaments) Community College Sectional this past weekend, January 20-21, 2017. Chipola A captured the title with a 8-0 record, while Chipola B finished second with a 6-2 record.

Chipola A receives an automatic bid to the National Community College Championship to be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota on February 24-25, 2017. Teams receive automatic bids by winning their sectional. Seven sectionals were held across the country this past weekend. In total, 61 teams were competing for a spot in the national tournament. Besides the seven automatic bids, 17 other teams are offered spots based on their stats. Chipola A will be the #1 seed at the national tournament. This is the sixth time  Chipola has entered the tournament as the #1 seed.  Chipola B will also be competing in the tournament as the #10 seed in the country.

Four Chipola players finished in the top 6 in individual scoring:  Katie Everett(2nd), Hunter Davis (3rd), Turner McCroan(4th) and Jonce Palmer (6th).

Chipola Brain Bowl team members are:  Turner McCroan, Hunter Davis, Katie Everett, Alex Tharp, Donavan Ebersole, Michael Young, Sierra Ennis, Daniel Lewis, Ann Marie Brown, Colby Hargrove, Trey Rollins, Jonce Palmer, and Madelynn Lytle.

Chipola will compete next weekend, January 27-28, 2017 in Tallahassee at the FCSAA Panhandle Regionals.

Chipola College’s brain bowl team had two teams tie for first and one team tie for second at the Santa Fe Open held this past weekend in Gaineville, FL on the Santa Fe College campus.

Chipola Blue, consisting of Hunter Davis, Alex Tharp, and Colby Hargrove won their bracket,  finishing with a 7-0 record. Chipola Gold, consisting of Turner McCroan, Donavan Ebersole, and Trey Rollins also won their bracket, finishing with a 7-0 record as well.  Chipola White, consisting of Katie Everett, Michael Young, Ann Marie Brown, and Madelyn Lytle finished tied for second with Valencia Red with a 6-1 record, with their only loss coming against Chipola Blue.

The Chipola team had 4 of the top 5 players in individual scoring. Katie Everett took top honors, averaging 86.43 points per game. Hunter Davis, Turner McCroan, and Alex Tharp finished 2nd, 3rd, and 5th respectively.

Chipola will next play this weekend at the NAQT Sectional, hosted here at Chipola College. The tournament will begin on Friday at 5:00 in Building Z and resume on Saturday at 9:00. Come support the Chipola team as they try to qualify for nationals.

Chipola’s brain bowl team captured its seventh Delta Burke title this past weekend held at Valencia College in Orlando. The Delta Burke is hosted annually by Valencia College, and it usually comprises the largest community college field during the fall season. This year’s field consisted of 24 teams from around the state and few teams from Alabama.

The Chipola team finished the preliminary rounds with a 5-0 record, and swept the championship bracket on Saturday with a 10-0 overall record to claim the title. Chipola last won the Delta Burke in 2013. State College Manatee won in 2015 and New College won in 2014.

Chipola’s A team - consisting of  Katie Everett, Hunter Davis, Turner McCroan, and Alex Tharp finished the tournament averaging 411.0 points per game, and 20.00 points per bonus, the highest averages for a Chipola team since the Paul Kelson led team in 2013. Turner McCroan and Hunter Davis finished 9th and 11th respectively in individual scoring.

Chipola’s B team – consisting of Michael Young, Donavan Ebersole, and Daniel Lewis also had a good showing finishing 5-5. Michael Young finished 17th in individual scoring.

Chipola’s C team – consisting of Jonce Palmer, Sierra Ennis, and Colby Hargrove also finished 5-5. Jonce Palmer finished 15th in individual scoring and Sierra Ennis finished 18th overall.

The Chipola team has completed its fall season, winning the Florida Gateway Open, the Erik Korray Open, and the Delta Burke. The team will compete next in January at the NAQT Sectional hosted by Chipola.

    Florida Gateway Invitational

The Chipola Brain Bowl Team won the Florida Gateway Invitational in Lake City, FL. The team of Hunter Davis, Katie Everett, and Alex Tharp finished the tournament 8-0 to claim the title. Chipola had three teams in the tournament. The team of Turner McCroan and Donavan Ebersole finished 2nd overall with a 6-2 record, and the team of Michael Young, Trey Rollins, Daniel Lewis, and Ann Marie Brown finished in the top half with a 4-4 record.

This was Chipola’s first tournament of the fall season. Other schools that attended the tournament were Valencia, Central Florida, South Florida, Northwest FL, Santa Fe, and Florida Gateway.

Turner McCroan, Hunter Davis, and Katie Everett finished 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively in individual scoring. This is the first time Chipola has had 3 players finish as the top 3 scorers.
