Financial Aid: Rights and Responsibilities

Post-secondary education is a big financial investment and students should carefully evaluate all aspects of their "purchase." Following is a list of questions a student has a right to ask regarding financial aid and the responsibilities involved.

  1. What is the total cost of attending this institution, and what are the policies regarding refunds to students who drop out?

  2. What financial assistance is available, including information on all federal, state, local, private, and institutional financial aid programs.

  3. What are the procedures and deadlines for submitting applications for each available financial aid program?

  4. What is the process for selecting financial aid recipients?

  5. How is "financial need" determined?

  6. How and when will financial aid be received?

  7. What is the interest rate on loans; what is the total amount that must be repaid; what is the length of time students have to repay; when must students start repaying, and what are the provisions for deferment or cancellation?

  8. How is "satisfactory progress" determined, and what happens if a student is not making satisfactory progress?

  9. What are the special facilities and services available for the disabled?

  10. What types of College Work-Study jobs are available? What are the duties, wages, hours, and pay dates for any work-study jobs offered?

Along with student rights come responsibilities. Listed here are some of the major student responsibilities associated with financial aid.

  1. Applicants must provide all documentation, corrections, and/or new information requested by either the Financial Aid Office or the agency to which an application is submitted.

  2. Read, understand, and keep copies of all forms that are signed.

  3. Complete any financial aid application accurately, and submit it on time to the right place. Errors can delay or prevent students from receiving aid.

  4. Know and meet all deadlines for applying for aid.

  5. Notify the college of any information that has changed since you applied for financial aid.

  6. Repay all student loans.

  7. Notify the college of a change in name, address, or attendance status (part time, full time).

  8. Satisfactorily perform the work agreed upon in a College Work-Study job.

  9. Understand the college's refund policy.

  10. Review and consider all information about a college’s program before enrolling.
