Post-secondary education is a big financial investment and students should
carefully evaluate all aspects of their "purchase." Following is a list of
questions a student has a right to ask regarding financial aid and the
responsibilities involved.
- What is the total cost of attending this institution, and what are the
policies regarding refunds to students who drop out?
- What financial assistance is available, including information on all
federal, state, local, private, and institutional financial aid programs.
- What are the procedures and deadlines for submitting applications for each
available financial aid program?
- What is the process for selecting financial aid recipients?
- How is "financial need" determined?
- How and when will financial aid be received?
- What is the interest rate on loans; what is the total amount that must be
repaid; what is the length of time students have to repay; when must students
start repaying, and what are the provisions for deferment or cancellation?
- How is "satisfactory progress" determined, and what happens if a student
is not making satisfactory progress?
- What are the special facilities and services available for the disabled?
- What types of College Work-Study jobs are available? What are the duties,
wages, hours, and pay dates for any work-study jobs offered?
Along with student rights come responsibilities. Listed here are some of the
major student responsibilities associated with financial aid.
