Lay and Young Wins Kirkland Award

MARIANNA—Professors Terolyn Lay and Stan Young were chosen by their peers to receive the Kirkland Award for Excellence in Teaching at the 2022 Chipola College Commencement Ceremony.

Professor Terolyn Lay teaches the Integrated Principles of Biology I and Microbiology lecture and lab at Chipola College. She has also taught Anatomy and Physiology II for many years during her career at Chipola. For the past five years, Lay has been teaching Chipola’s online Career and Life Planning class.

Lay is a member of the Association of Florida College (AFC) and serves on Chipola’s AFC Executive Board. She is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society for women educators, and is a certified Quality Matters (QM) Master Reviewer for Higher Education, K-12, and K-12 Publishers.

Lay earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southwest Louisiana, a Master of Science degree from Texas Woman’s University, and a Doctor of Education from the University of Florida.

Professor Stan Young has taught a variety of math courses at Chipola since 2004 including, Calculus and Analytic Geometry I, Calculus and Analytic Geometry II and Introduction to Statistics.

Since 2005, Young has served as head coach of the highly successful Chipola Brain Bowl team. The team recently won team the 2022 FCSAA State Championship. Young is also a member of the FCSAA Hall of Fame.

Young earned an Associate of Arts degree from Chipola College, a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University and Master of Business Administration degree from Troy State University.

The Kirkland Award was established by brothers, J.R. Kirkland and David Kirkland, in honor of their parents, the late Willis and Carolyn Kirkland of Marianna. The award provides a $1,000 bonus to the annual recipient.
