MARIANNA—Professors Steve Givens and Robert Hawkins were honored by their peers as the 2025 recipients of the prestigious Kirkland Award for Excellence in Teaching during the Chipola College Commencement Ceremony.

Dr. Steve Givens, Professor of Sports Fitness & Recreational Management, has served Chipola College for 17 years and previously held the role of Athletic Director from 2012 to 2014. His extensive experience mentoring student-athletes continues to leave a lasting impact on campus. Colleagues praise Dr. Givens for his collaborative spirit and his dedication to student success, particularly among athletes. One nomination noted that he “provides mentorship that extends beyond the classroom. Ultimately, he inspires confidence, nurtures potential, and helps students build a strong foundation for their academic and professional futures.”

Dr. Givens earned three degrees from Florida State University: a B.S. in Criminology, a Master’s in Sports Management, and a Ph.D. in Physical Education. Known for his inclusive teaching methods and practical approach, he is described as “a successful instructor who meets students where they are—using clear communication and real-world applications to make material accessible and engaging.”

Professor Robert Hawkins joined Chipola College as a Math Instructor in January 2024 and has quickly become an integral part of the Mathematics and Natural Science departments. Despite being the newest member of the team, he was described in his nomination as “one of our most invaluable resources,” due to his unwavering support of colleagues, his willingness to share best practices, and his leadership in education technology and curriculum development.

An alumnus of Chipola College, Professor Hawkins earned his Bachelor of Science from Chipola and a Master of Education from the University of West Florida. Students frequently commend his ability to demystify complex concepts and create an inclusive, encouraging classroom environment. One student shared, “Professor Hawkins makes math fun, and I finally feel like I understand it! He genuinely cares about us succeeding.”

The Kirkland Award for Excellence in Teaching was established by brothers J.R. and David Kirkland in memory of their parents, the late Willis and Carolyn Kirkland of Marianna. The award includes a $1,000 honorarium and is presented annually to outstanding faculty members who demonstrate excellence in teaching and service to students.
