Course Description:
This course is a broad and global perspective of art development and usage throughout time, as well as the historical contexts in which these works of art were created. This course identifies and examines world art historical movements from prehistoric times to the 14th century. It briefly analyzes the historical, religious, social, and political contexts that influenced both famous artists and larger art movements. A global perspective is used throughout this course and this course encourages students to examine works of art throughout the world and from a wide variety of cultures including arts from Africa, Asia, the early Americas, and Oceania. This course has been designated as an international/ diversity course.

Means of accomplishing learning outcomes:

The instructor will provide a broad and global perspective of art development and usage throughout time, as well as the historical contexts in which these works of art were created via a combination of lectures, PowerPoints, discussion, and out-of-class assignments. This course identifies and examines world art historical movements from prehistoric times to the 14th century.  Each student will be expected to read all assigned material as well as complete all assignments. The instructor will provide timely feedback on assignments and hold weekly office hours to address further questions and student needs outside of class time. The final grade will be based on class attendance/participation, written assignments and/or discussion boards, quizzes and/or tests, exams, and research papers including a formal analysis paper and a contextual analysis paper.

Students are expected to:

  • Follow attendance policies and arrive to class on time
  • Turn in assignments on time
  • Participate in discussions and engage in class activities
  • Read all assigned readings
  • Complete all written assignments, quizzes, research paper and final exam
